This book focuses on the need for an Eulerian formulation of
constitutive equations. After introducing tensor analysis using
both index and direct notation, nonlinear kinematics of continua is
presented. The balance laws of the purely mechanical theory are
discussed along with restrictions on constitutive equations due to
superposed rigid body motion. The balance laws of the
thermomechanical theory are discussed and specific constitutive
equations are presented for: hyperelastic materials;
elastic-inelastic materials; thermoelastic-inelastic materials with
application to shock waves; thermoelastic-inelastic porous
materials; and thermoelastic-inelastic growing biological tissues.

Traditionally, the martial arts community believed that engaging in
weight training was detrimental to the performance of the art, that
it would hinder one's flexibility, speed, and agility. To be
effective fighters, martial artists had to be quick and light on
their feet like Bruce Lee and other slim and small, but powerful
fighters. They maintained that karate was all about good techniques
and proper timing and that muscle size has little to do with it.
After all, the art of self-defense lies in the premise that
smaller, weaker people can defend themselves effectively against
larger, stronger opponents. While it's true that good technique and
proper timing are essential, there's no reason to believe that
muscular fitness will hinder a martial artist's effectiveness. In
fact, just the opposite is true: with increased strength comes the
enhanced ability to defend oneself. A well-designed weight-training
routine--in addition to regular martial arts practice--will make
practitioners stronger, not slower. In some cases, it can even
improve their speed. Fortunately, the attitude toward weight
training in the martial arts community has changed--largely due to
an abundance of scientific data showing the positive effects of
weight training for all kinds of sports. Today's athletes have much
to gain by using weights to improve their performance. For martial
artists, these gains include increased strength, increased
resistance to fatigue, and even decreased risk of injury. In this
book, veteran martial artist and fitness expert Mikhail Krupnik
shows readers how to design a weight-training program to fit their
individual needs and goals. From all-important safety issues,
determining one's levelof fitness, and setting goals, to specific
exercises, sample routines, and even proper nutrition--he covers
everything martial artists need to know to enhance their
performance with weight training.
From the NBA's most sought-after trainer and skills coach comes a
"backstage pass to a part of the NBA that most fans never see"
(Pete Thamel, Yahoo Sports)--how superstars like Stephen Curry,
Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, and Kevin Love work
to excel at the game. When Rob McClanaghan failed to make the
Syracuse basketball team as a walk-on freshman, he asked the
coaches what he needed to do to achieve his goal the following
year. They all agreed: get stronger. So that's what he did. For
months, Rob traded fraternity parties and hanging out with buddies
for hours in the gym lifting weights and shooting baskets. He was
single-minded; the only thing that mattered was defying the odds.
He returned to Syracuse for his sophomore year thirty pounds
heavier and caught the coach's eye. In Net Work, McClanaghan's
"experience, knowledge, and keen understanding of the sport jumps
off the pages" (Bob Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company) and he
delivers what he brings to each of his training sessions: the same
grit and spirit that got him into the college game. He calls it
"the grind," and he knows that without it, even the most talented
players will come up short. McClanaghan pushes his clients hard; he
does whatever he can to drive his players to the edge and to
simulate fourth quarter, at-the-buzzer adrenaline and fatigue. An
all-access pass to the practice courts of the NBA, Net Work
combines McClanaghan's hard-earned wisdom--both on and off the
court--with rare glimpses into the dues-paying life of professional
athletes determined to stay at the top. McClanaghan shares stories
of working one-on-one with some of basketball's greatest names,
explaining how each athlete works to shore up his offensive and
defensive weaknesses; perfect his nutrition; treat injuries; build
mental toughness; and find occasional refuge from the glare of the
spotlight. This book is life inside the NBA as you've never seen
it, where players differentiate themselves by their willingness to
put in relentless "net work."
Adventure Group Psychotherapy: An Experiential Approach to
Treatment explores what is necessary for an experiential therapy

manner that produces the greatest opportunity for clients to reach
their goals. Issues such as how to actively assess client
functioning in the group, how to select the appropriate activity,
how to shape an effective environment, and how to help clients
process their experience are a few of the aspects examined to help
clients move toward their goals. The practical skills the authors
describe enable readers to immediately learn and apply their
practice with groups. This book will be an important tool in any
group therapy class, in practice settings to train practitioners,

capabilities.
A New York Times bestseller Foreword by Doris Kearns Goodwin The
longtime Commissioner of Major League Baseball provides an
unprecedented look inside professional baseball today, focusing on
how he helped bring the game into the modern age and revealing his
interactions with players, managers, fellow owners, and fans
nationwide. More than a century old, the game of baseball is
resistant to change--owners, managers, players, and fans all hate
it. Yet, now more than ever, baseball needs to evolve--to compete
with other professional sports, stay relevant, and remain America's
Pastime it must adapt. Perhaps no one knows this better than Bud
Selig who, as the head of MLB for more than twenty years, ushered
in some of the most important, and controversial, changes in the
game's history--modernizing a sport that had remained unchanged
since the 1960s. In this enlightening and surprising book, Selig
goes inside the most difficult decisions and moments of his career,
looking at how he worked to balance baseball's storied history with
the pressures of the twenty-first century to ensure its future.
Part baseball story, part business saga, and part memoir, For the
Good of the Game chronicles Selig's career, takes fans inside
locker rooms and board rooms, and offers an intimate, fascinating
account of the frequently messy process involved in transforming an
American institution. Featuring an all-star lineup of the biggest
names from the last forty years of baseball, Selig recalls the
vital games, private moments, and tense conversations he's shared
with Hall of Fame players and managers and the contentious calls
he's made. He also speaks candidly about hot-button issues the
steroid scandal that threatened to destroy the game, telling his
side of the story in full and for the first time. As he looks back
and forward, Selig outlines the stakes for baseball's continued
transformation--and why the changes he helped usher in must only be
the beginning. Illustrated with sixteen pages of photographs.

In recent years there has been a steady increase in the racial and
ethnic diversity of the playing workforce in many sports around the
world. However, there has been a minimal throughput of racial and
ethnic minorities into coaching and leadership positions. This book
brings together leading researchers from around the world to
examine key questions around 'race', ethnicity and racism in sports
coaching. The book focuses specifically on the ways in which
'race', ethnicity and racism operate, and how they are experienced
and addressed (or not) within the socio-cultural sphere of sports
coaching. Theoretically informed and empirically grounded, it
examines macro- (societal), meso- (organisational), and micro-
(individual) level barriers to racial and ethnic diversity as well
as the positive action initiatives designed to help overcome them.
Featuring multi-disciplinary perspectives, the book is arranged
into three thematic sections, addressing the central topics of
representation and racialised barriers in sports coaching;
racialised identities, diversity and intersectionality in sports
coaching; and formalised racial equality interventions in sports
coaching. Including case studies from across North America, Europe
and Australasia, 'Race', Ethnicity and Racism in Sports Coaching is
essential reading for students, academics and practitioners with a
critical interest in the sociology of sport, sport coaching, sport
management, sport development, and 'race' and ethnicity studies.

This book is about joint intelligence in action. It brings together
scholarship in performance studies, cognitive science, sociology,
literature, anthropology, psychology, architecture, philosophy and
sport science to ask how tightly knit collaboration works.
Contributors apply innovative methodologies to detailed case
studies of martial arts, social interaction, freediving,
site-specific artworks, Body Weather, human-AI music composition,
Front-of-House at Shakespeare's Globe, acrobatics and failing at
handstands. In each investigation, performance and theory are
mutually revealing, informative and captivating. Short chapters
fall into thematic clusters exploring complex ecologies of skill,
collaborative learning and the microstructure of embodied
coordination, followed by commentaries from leading scholars in
performance studies and cognitive science. Each contribution
highlights unique features of the performance ecology, equipping
performance makers, students and researchers with the theoretical,
methodological and practical inspiration to delve deeper into their
own embodied practices and critical thinking.
This thesis presents experimental research on the interaction
between the optical field and the mechanical oscillator in
whispering-gallery mode microcavities. It demonstrates how
optomechanical interactions in a microresonator can be used to
achieve non-magnetic non-reciprocity and develop all-optically
controlled non-reciprocal multifunctional photonic devices. The
thesis also discusses the interaction between the travelling
optical and mechanical whispering-gallery modes, paving the way for
non-reciprocal light storage as a coherent, circulating acoustic
wave with a lifetime of up to tens of microseconds. Lastly, the
thesis presents a high-frequency phase-sensitive heterodyne
vibrometer, operating up to 10 GHz, which can be used for the
high-resolution, non-invasive mapping of the vibration patterns of
acoustic devices. The results presented here show that
optomechanical devices hold great potential in the field of
information processing.
In basketball, as in most sports, a large part of a coach's
responsibility is to prepare his or her team for games. Yet, little
time in practice is typically devoted to readying the players and
coaches for specific game situations. For instance, what are the
various ways to use dead ball moments to maximum advantage? What
adjustments should be made to launch a comeback in particular
circumstances? When is it favorable to purposefully miss a foul
shot? In Odds-On Basketball Coaching: Crafting High-Percentage
Strategies for Game Situations, Michael J. Coffino presents an
innovative system for coaches to prepare for specific game
scenarios. Coffino challenges coaches to think differently about
what they emphasize in practice, placing greater value on preparing
for recurring game situations, crafting strategies by assessing the
odds, and creating a culture that elevates how players think about
the game. Each chapter begins with an actual game scenario that
illustrates the chapter's content and includes discussions of
notable college and professional basketball games in order to
demonstrate specific points. Odds-On Basketball Coaching provides a
framework for making game decisions beyond instincts and habits. It
is intended, more than anything, to stimulate coaches and players
to think comprehensively and realistically about how to approach
games and practices, fostering an environment where everyone can
more incisively make game-time decisions. While high school and
youth basketball coaches will find this book most helpful, coaches
at all levels will benefit from this novel approach to the game.
