Labor and Economic Growth in Five Asian Countries - South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines (Hardcover):... Labor and Economic Growth in Five Asian Countries - South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines (Hardcover)
Walter Galenson
R2,191 Discovery Miles 21 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work explores developments in the labor markets of five countries--South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines--which have undergone successful economic development during the past quarter of a century. This includes employment, earnings, industrial relations, and social security measures. While the Philippines' progress has lagged, the other four countries constitute the most successful group of the world's developing countries--offering a interesting contrast in approaches to growth. The author's methodology is comparative by specific subject, so that a correlation of developmental stages and the emergence of particular features of the labor market emerges.

This study is unique in that inter-country comparisons are made in terms of specific aspects of the labor market. The work will be of interest to economists, political scientists, and sociologists concerned with problems of development. And it will be useful in pointing the way to successful development practices.

Michael Whittall, Herman Knudsen, Fred Huijgen
R3,499 R1,330 Discovery Miles 13 300 Save R2,169 (62%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since 1996 a growing number of European employees have access to a European works council (EWC), a transnational employee body designed to complement national forms of labour representation . This volume brings together a hep hive of contributors who present valuable new insights into how employee representatives from different European countries perform their jobs as members of European Works Councils in an attempt to develop some sense of a common European labour identity

The transnational character of the EWC makes it an ideal microscopic structure through which the wider discourse surrounding identity a " especially when associated with globalization, Europeanization, and mobility a " can occur. a ~Towards a European Labour Identitya (TM) examines not only the workings of the EWCs, utilising individual case studies, but also analyses and asses the link with the broader discussions on European identity as well as European trade union co-ordination and solidarity.

Norma M. Riccucci
R4,514 Discovery Miles 45 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The readings in this volume will enlighten and enliven the contents of any standard public administration text covering human resource management. Selected mainly from the pages of Public Administration Review and Review of Public Personnel Administration, these classic articles trace the historical and evolutionary development of the fields of public personnel administration and labor relations from the point at which the first civil service law was passed - the Pendelton Act in 1883 - through the 21st century. The collection covers everything from the seminal concerns of civil service (e.g., keeping spoils out) to topics that early reformers would never have envisioned (e.g., affirmative action and drug testing). These works continue to inform the theory and practice of public personnel and labor relations. To facilitate an instructor's ability to assign readings that illuminate lectures and course material, a correlation matrix on the M.E. Sharpe website shows how this book can be used easily alongside eight leading textbooks.

Industrial Relations in Korea - Diversity and Dynamism of Korean Enterprise Unions from a Comparative Perspective (Hardcover):... Industrial Relations in Korea - Diversity and Dynamism of Korean Enterprise Unions from a Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Jooyeon Jeong
R4,774 Discovery Miles 47 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A key factor in Korea's economic success is the nature of industrial relations in Korean business and industry. Joo-Yeon Jeong presents a comprehensive survey of the current state of industrial relations in Korea. He shows how union membership has changed over recent decades, and how the focus of bargaining has widened from purely financial considerations to include a much wider range of issues including, principally, issues related to job security. In addition, the book considers the role of government in shaping the legal and institutional environment, and of employers, who have taken a more aggressive role towards unions since the mid-1990s.

Haywire - Discord in Maine's Logging Woods and the Unraveling of an Industry (Paperback): Andrew Egan Haywire - Discord in Maine's Logging Woods and the Unraveling of an Industry (Paperback)
Andrew Egan
R888 Discovery Miles 8 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Logging in the northern forest has been romanticized, with images of log drives, plaid shirts, and bunkhouses in wide circulation. Increasingly dismissed as a quaint, rural pastime, logging remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, with loggers occupying a precarious position amid unstable markets, expanding global competition, and growing labor discord. Examining a time of transition and decline in Maine's forest economy, Andrew Egan traces pathways for understanding the challenges that have faced Maine's logging community and, by extension, the state's forestry sector, from the postwar period through today. Seeking greater profits, logging companies turned their crews loose at midcentury, creating a workforce of independent contractors who were forced to purchase expensive equipment and compete for contracts with the mills. Drawing on his own experience with the region's forest products industry, interviews with Maine loggers, media coverage, and court documents, Egan follows the troubled recent history of the industry and its battle for survival.

Brokering Circular Labour Migration - A Mobile Ethnography of Migrant Care Workers' Journey to Switzerland (Hardcover):... Brokering Circular Labour Migration - A Mobile Ethnography of Migrant Care Workers' Journey to Switzerland (Hardcover)
Huey Shy Chau
R4,473 Discovery Miles 44 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines the commercialisation of domestic and care work through private agencies that organise transnational care arrangements by brokering migrant workers. The book focuses on the emergence of private for-profit home care agencies following the 2011 extension of the Free Movement of Workers to Eastern European Countries agreement in Switzerland. The agencies recruit migrant women from these countries and place them in private households for elderly care. This book explores how circular labour migration for these care workers is facilitated. In the form of a mobile ethnography, it traces their journey from Eastern European countries to Switzerland - from when care workers find employment and are recruited by agencies to when they arrive at their designated households. From the agencies' analytical standpoint, the book examines the recruitment and placement practices of the home care agencies and their role in facilitating migration. Brokering Labour Migration offers an understanding of new migration patterns and highlights fundamental changes in migration control with the extension of free movement of workers in Switzerland to lower-wage countries in Eastern Europe. It will be an invaluable resource for academics and scholars of geography, anthropology, sociology, and gender and migration.

The Global Perspective of Urban Labor in Mexico City, 1910-1929 - El Mundo al Reves (Hardcover): Stephan Fender The Global Perspective of Urban Labor in Mexico City, 1910-1929 - El Mundo al Reves (Hardcover)
Stephan Fender
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Global Perspective of Urban Labor in Mexico City, 1910-1929 examines the global entanglement of the Mexican labor movement during the Mexican Revolution. It describes how global influences made their entry into labor culture through the cinema, the theater, and labor festivals as well as into the development of consumption patterns and advertisement. It further shows how the young labor movement constituted its discourse and invented its tradition at meetings and in the columns of newspapers. The local conditions constitute the framework for the examination of Mexican labor's perspectives on and engagement with contemporary events of global significance. Thereby, this book demonstrates how workers turned to the global context in search of guidance and role models, embracing global developments and narratives. It also reveals the differentiations from this context in order to create a unique local identity. This approach allows new perspectives on the role of a neglected revolutionary actor and on the influence of global developments in a revolution that has been predominantly interpreted from a national point of view. It shows the way global ideas were brought to life in the framework of revolutionary Mexico City - providing new insights into the grand-narratives of Globalization and Revolution.

Industrial Relations in China (Hardcover): Bill Taylor, Kai Chang, Qi Li Industrial Relations in China (Hardcover)
Bill Taylor, Kai Chang, Qi Li
R3,397 Discovery Miles 33 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This enlightening book provides the first systematic introduction to, and exploration of, the emerging system of industrial relations in China, and draws on the authors' extensive research and direct involvement in the developments taking place. The authors argue that there are both unifying and fragmenting elements to the ongoing development of industrial relations, but overall it is one in which the state continues to maintain a major, and direct, influence. Divisions between workers and managers may be escalating with increased open conflicts, but this book reveals that the picture is far more complex and contradictory than to assume that the solution is convergence with western style industrial relations systems. They conclude that industrial relations institutions and processes still act within a political context and with the guiding hand of the Chinese Communist party. Industrial Relations in China draws on up-to-date material and will ensure the book's appeal to industrial relations and Chinese scholars. It will also appeal to a wider audience of Asian labour and development studies scholars.

Campbell Balfour
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, first published in 1973, analyses and sets in context one of the major issues in the growth of the European economy. Workers' participation played an increasingly vital role in industrial relations. This book looks at the background and development of different types of participation in Britain, ranging from workers' attempts at co-operative production, through the schemes in the nationalised industries of mining and steel, to the Fairfields Experiment and the Upper Clyde 'work-in' in shipbuilding. Contested Sites - Commemoration, Memorial and Popular Politics in Nineteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover, New edition): Paul A.... Contested Sites - Commemoration, Memorial and Popular Politics in Nineteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover, New edition)
Paul A. Pickering, Alex Tyrrell
R4,474 Discovery Miles 44 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The second half of the nineteenth century witnessed a new phenomenon in public monuments and civic ornamentation. Whereas in former times public statuary had customarily been reserved for 'warriors and statesmen, kings and rulers of men', a new trend was emerging for towns to commemorate their own citizens. As the subjects immortalised in stone and bronze broadened beyond the traditional ruling classes to include radicals and reformers, it necessitated a corresponding widening of the language and understanding of public statuary. Contested Sites explores the role of these commemorations in radical public life in Britain. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the importance of symbols in public discourse, political monuments have received little attention from historians. This is to be regretted, for commemorations are statements of public identity and memory that have their politics; they are 'embedded in complex class, gender and power relations that determine what is remembered (or forgotten)'. Examining monuments, plaques and tombstones commemorating a variety of popular movements and reforming individuals, the contributions in Contested Sites reveal the relations that went into the making of public memory in modern Britain and its radical tradition.

Employment Relations in Non-Union Firms (Hardcover, New edition): Tony Dundon, Derek Rollinson Employment Relations in Non-Union Firms (Hardcover, New edition)
Tony Dundon, Derek Rollinson
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The precise relationship between an employee and employer is often ambiguous within complex organizational boundaries. This book re-evaluates the way employment relations are conceptualized and examines employment conditions in non-union organizations.

The authors present a detailed analysis of the conditions and patterns of employment relations in both small and large non-union firms. They assess the impact of regulation, managerial ideology and market influences on employer strategies to avoid unionization. Using social and psychological exchange, the book concludes with an assessment of the capacity of workers to act as an agent of change in these non-union relationships. The implications for worker mobilization, trade union expansion and employer strategies are also considered in the light of detailed case study analysis.

1919 - A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike (Paperback): Graphic History Collective 1919 - A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike (Paperback)
Graphic History Collective; Illustrated by David Lester
R383 Discovery Miles 3 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

After suffering the hardships and horrors of the First World War, workers and soldiers faced the agony of the post-war Canadian economy. With rising inflation, unprecedented unemployment, and an increasingly repressive state, the atmosphere was ripe for revolt. The Russian Czar had been overthrown just eighteen months ago and workers had revolution on their minds. On May 15, 1919 more than 30,000 workers in Winnipeg, Manitoba walked off the job and began a general strike that would last six weeks and change the course of Canadian history. The strikers' demands began with higher wages, collective bargaining rights, and more power for working people. As sympathy strikes broke out and more workers joined the call, the Winnipeg Strike Committee became a de-facto government Like so many labour actions before and since, the strikers were met with a violent end . On "Bloody Saturday" the Royal North-West Mounted Police charged into the crowd, killing two workers and injuring dozens more. One hundred years later, the Winnipeg General Strike continues to be a poignant reminder of the power of the state and capital over workers' lives and the brutal ends governments and bosses have and will use to crush workers' movements, and an inspirational example of the possibilities of class struggle and solidarity.
