John Gloag (1896-1981) was a leading modernist commentator and anyone with an interest in early and mid-20th Century design will be familiar with his name. He was well known as an author of almost 60 books on architecture, social history and industrial design. Gloag was a member of an elite design culture that was highly visible throughout the 1930s and 40s. Although an ardent reformist with links to a number of prestigious institutions, including RIBA, the RSA, the DIA and the CoID, Gloag's contribution to design reform and to an understanding of a national design tradition, has attracted little scholarly interest. This set addresses that by re-issuing 10 of his most well-received books, many of them amply and beautifully illustrated.
Coco Chanel lived her life as a romantic heroine. Fuelled by nineteenth century literature, she built a life that was part myth, part fact. She was the fashion designer everyone admired. The business woman whose fortunes were impossible to track. She was a performer and the lover of many high profile intellectuals. She was also believed, by many, to have been a Nazi spy. Her life was impacted heavily by history; the Second World War left an indelible trace. She was also greatly influenced by symbolism and literature, both huge sources of inspiration. This biography explores the course of her life, from her troubled and poverty stricken upbringing to the opening of her first hat shop. We discover Coco's passions and secrets, uncovering the myths and the facts of her life and examining how they match up, if at all. There are chapters focussing on the Chanel Maison and the creation of her iconic trademark, as well as her 'little black dress' and 'Chanel No 5'. Three exclusive interviews with individuals who have known Coco and researched her life also feature. Finally, the biography ends with a reflection on how the myth and legacy of Coco Chanel is represented today in pop culture.

On a hot summer night in August of 1973 DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy put on a 'back to school jam' in the recreation room of their apartment block at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the west Bronx. The rest is history. The birth of hip hop rippled out across the globe, influencing music and fashion for generations. Early hip hop style focused on customization from spray- painted jean jackets and sweatshirts to creased jeans and boxed laced sneakers. Before Nike had apparel, Dapper Dan made Nike fashion in addition to one-of-a-kind looks with the logos of MCM, Gucci, and Fendi. The eclectic style eventually evolved into its own apparel brands, from FUBU to Sean John, Roc-A-Wear, Billionaire Boys Club, BAPE, Baby Phat, Cross Colours, and Pelle Pelle. Sections on these individual designers run alongside thematic chapters on stylists, record labels, pink, hairstyles, nameplates, hoops, nails, and sneakers. Each chapter on hip-hop style is illustrated with photographs of performers, entrepreneurs, and iconic pieces. New research from journalists that witnessed the developments firsthand and oral histories from celebrities and designers make Fresh Fly Fabulous the definitive source for hip-hop style.

In Sustaining Cultural Development, Biljana Mickov and James Doyle argue that effective programmes to promote greater participation in cultural life require substantial investment in research and strategic planning. Using studies from contributors throughout Europe, they look at ways to promote cultural life as the centre of the broader sustainable development of society. These studies illustrate how combining cultural identity, cultural diversity and creativity with increased participation of citizens in cultural life improves harmonized cultural development and promotes democracy. They indicate a shift from traditional governance of the cultural sector to a new, more horizontal, approach that links cultural workers at different levels in different sectors and different locations. This book will stimulate debate amongst cultural leaders, city managers and other policy makers, as well as serving as a resource for researchers and those teaching and learning on a range of post-graduate courses and programmes. |
