Qigong is the centuries-old practice of moving vital energy (Qi)
through the channels of the body, known as meridians, to promote
vitality and health. Stephen Rath details current research and
Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to show how Qigong practice can
support cognitive functioning, as well as emotional and physical
wellbeing, in people with dementia. Qigong for Wellbeing in
Dementia and Aging presents a set of accessible Qigong exercises
and breathing techniques adapted specifically for older people who
may be frail or have limited mobility, which address specific
symptoms associated with dementia. These include exercises for the
hands and feet, exercises for releasing emotions through the Five
Animal Sounds, seated exercises, and facial exercises. The
exercises, contributed by the Natural Healing Research Foundation
from their Senior Exercise Class in Hawaii, are presented with
clear explanatory illustrations. The final part of the book
describes the Chinese understanding of nutrition as an essential
underpinning of good health into old age, and provides
health-giving food and drink recipes for people with dementia based
on these principles. There is also a helpful chapter on practicing
Qigong to protect against caregiver burnout. This will be an
invaluable book for care professionals, nurses, activity
coordinators, and physical therapists, as well as people with
dementia and their families.
Gerontological nursing remains a critical specialty area for the
profession of nursing, especially as the older adult population
grows. The Fifth Edition of Gerontological Nursing: Competencies
for Care takes a holistic approach and teaches students how to
provide quality patient care for the older adult, preparing them to
effectively care for this population. Students and faculty
appreciate the practical approach as well as the author's logical
organization of competency-based content both of which are a
hallmark of this text. Following the framework outlined by the
AACN's recommended baccalaureate competencies and curricular
guidelines for the care of older adults, the text guides students
through the core foundations of gerontological nursing as a
specialty. The Fifth Edition emphasizes these essential
competencies coupled with the management of geriatric syndromes
that impact this population including falls, sleep disorders,
depression/anxiety, and elder abuse. Key Features: * Practical
information on dementia for nurses and caregivers * Expanded
content on fall prevention * New content on COVID-19 and telehealth
care * "Healthy Aging Tips" found throughout the text * Updated
research highlights * Critical thinking and personal reflection
exercises * Video case studies in the form of author-conducted
interviews accessible via Navigate Premier Access
This book addresses in a structured and multidisciplinary way the
medical issues related to aging, paying particular attention to the
role of diagnostic imaging in the field of cardiovascular,
musculoskeletal, respiratory, neurological, urogenital and
gastrointestinal diseases. The progressive increase of the average
age of the population, of life expectancy and the improvement of
the quality of life are common phenomena in many countries of the
World. Over the years, the management of older persons seems to
have had an increasing impact both on the socio-economic and on the
medical-health level. Medicine, in all its branches, has in fact
focused more and more on the health conditions of the elderly
patient and its protection and, in this context, due to the
increasing progress in the field of technology and imaging methods,
the radiologist occupies a front-line position. Unlike the young or
middle-aged patients, the elderly need special care and attention,
especially because of the involutive-degenerative senile processes
they have to face, which must be taken into account to avoid
incurring into misdiagnosis. Radiology, in fact, aims more and more
at developing imaging techniques that are on the one hand
satisfactory and comprehensive, but at the same time that do not
represent any risk and/or obstacle for the elderly patient. The aim
of this book is to provide the radiologist, and not only, with an
adequate and complete geriatric preparation, thus to improve the
diagnostic-therapeutic management of those patients who, to date,
constitute the most conspicuous part of the medical-health users.

This book describes the changes in the brain and in cognitive
functions that occur with aging in the absence of a neurological,
psychiatric, or medical disease. It discusses aging-related changes
in many brain functions, including memory, language, sensory
perception, motor function, creativity, attention, executive
functions, emotions and mood. The neural mechanisms that may
account for specific aging-related changes in cognition, perception
and behavior are explored, as well as the means by which
aging-related cognitive decrements can be managed and possibly
ameliorated. Consequently, this book will be of value to
clinicians, including neurologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians,
primary care physicians, psychologists and speech-language
pathologists. In addition, researchers and graduate students who
want to learn about the aging brain will find this an indispensable
guide.
Death is the destiny we all share. This will not change. But the
way we die, which had been the same for many generations, has
changed drastically in a relatively short time for those in
developed countries with access to healthcare. For generations, if
people were lucky enough to reach old age, not having died in
infancy or childhood, in childbirth, in war, or by accident, they
would take to bed, surrounded by loved ones who cared for them, and
fade into death. Most likely, they would have seen their parents
and grandparents die the same way, so this manner of dying would be
familiar. It was part of the natural cycle of life. Now less than
25 per cent of Americans die at home, at much older ages than
people would have dreamed of in past generations, often after
surviving many illnesses and even diseases that would have been
terminal for their grandparents. We are fortunate to live (and die)
today, supported by myriad scientific, medical, and technological
advancements. But we also face new problems as a result of the new
way that we die. We cannot look forward to a peaceful waning when
we know our lives will likely end in hospitals, having endured very
expensive care, rather than at home with family. We have to decide
what decisions we want our loved ones, or care-givers, to make when
we cannot choose for ourselves. We have to think about whether in
any circumstances we would seek physician-assisted death. We know
we face other questions as well, but we may not even know where to
start. In the face of these decisions, we can feel daunted and
afraid. The best remedy is information and planning. In this book,
Gregory Eastwood - a physician who has cared for dying patients,
served as an ethics consultant, and taught end of life issues to
medical and other health profession students - draws from his
substantial experience with patients and families to provide the
information that will help us think clearly about the choices and
issues we will face at the end of our lives, and the end of our
loved ones'. With sensitivity and profound insight, Eastwood guides
us through all the important questions about death and dying in
straightforward, clear language and through real-life stories.
Throughout, he shows us how we can take ownership of the way we
want to die, when we must die, and feel more in control as death
approaches.
