English Prosodic Morphology (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Sabine Lappe English Prosodic Morphology (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Sabine Lappe
R3,069 Discovery Miles 30 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first modern book-length empirical study and theoretical account of English truncatory processes. On the basis of a corpus comprising some 3000 derivatives, the book provides a systematic investigation of the structural properties of six different patterns of English name truncation and word clipping. All patterns are shown to be unique in terms of the structural requirements that they impose on their outputs. The book presents an optimality-theoretic account of the data in the framework of Prosodic Morphology. Pertinent theoretical claims are evaluated in the light of the empirical findings from English, leading to an analysis which can successfully predict canonical form in truncation and which incorporates systematic variability in output structure. This volume is a contribution to the study of both English word-formation and English phonology, and can be used by scholars working inside and outside OT alike.

Katy Carlson, Charles Clifton Jr, Janet Dean Fodor
R3,653 Discovery Miles 36 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains papers that were written to honor Professor Lyn Frazier on the occasion of her retirement from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Some were presented at the Lynschrift on May 19-20, 2018; others were written especially for this volume. The papers report original research on, or research-based theoretical analyses of, several of the domains that Professor Frazier contributed to during her career. The volume begins with a brief overview of Professor Frazier's research contributions and an appreciation of the contributions she has made to the field of psycholinguistics and to her students and colleagues. The next several chapters discuss the roles that prosody plays in language processing, and the volume continues with chapters on the topic that established Professor Frazier as a major psycholinguistic theorist, syntactic processing. The volume then explores the roles semantics and pragmatics play in language comprehension, and concludes with reports of applications and extensions of research on language processing. All chapters were contributed by current and former students and colleagues of Professor Frazier in gratitude for the impact she has had on their lives and careers.

Noun Phrases and Nominalizations - The Syntax of DPs (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): T. Siloni Noun Phrases and Nominalizations - The Syntax of DPs (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
T. Siloni
R3,006 Discovery Miles 30 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Noun Phrases and Nominalizations: The Syntax of DPs is a theoretical study of nominal expressions which covers central aspects of their syntax that have not been approached with concurrent tools in recent years. The study examines the functional structure, offers a structural definition of syntactic nominalization, and carefully draws the border line between the lexical nominalizing mechanism and its syntactic counterpart. The empirical base of the study is broad and varied: it explores the rich nominal system of Modern Hebrew with constant comparisons to relevant structures of other Semitic and non-Semitic languages. The analyses put forward have recourse to a minimal syntactic apparatus, thus lending support to Chomsky's recent view of language design. This book targets researchers in theoretical linguistics and comparative syntax. Alongside theoretical and cross-linguistic findings, the book also offers an abundant source of insights into Hebrew nominal expressions. It can be used both as a foundational book on the syntax of nominal expressions or as a reference book for linguists and graduate students of Semitic and comparative syntax.

Reading - Multiple Perspectives (Hardcover): Roger Beard Reading - Multiple Perspectives (Hardcover)
Roger Beard
R4,015 Discovery Miles 40 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The field of reading is a compelling one, characterised by many debates and discussions. It is also amenable to investigations through a range of theories and research studies. In this book, eight leading authorities provide a 'state-of-the-art' overview of reading, using perspectives that have informed their work. There are overviews from linguistic, psychological, sociological and literary viewpoints, as well as more hybrid ones from investigations of digital literacy and multi-modality. This book celebrates what has already been achieved by bridging research, scholarship and practice; it also suggests what still needs to be done to bring the positive rewards from reading to greater numbers of young people. It also recognises that the benefits of reading extend beyond the personal. Accomplished reading skills empower people to meet the challenges of everyday life: making decisions, solving problems, and dealing with unexpected events. The need to refresh and renew our knowledge of reading has gained further impetus in the 'information age'. New technologies for information and communication continually appear: manifestations of 'fake news', disinformation and conspiracy theories spread rapidly across the globe. The book underlines the importance not only of reading, but also the fact that reading between and beyond the lines is more important than ever, in print and across multiple media platforms. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Education 3-13: International Journal of Primary, Elementary and Early Years Education.

Pedagogical Grammar and Grammar Pedagogy in Chinese as a Second Language (Hardcover): Fangyuan Yuan, Baozhang He, Wenze Hu Pedagogical Grammar and Grammar Pedagogy in Chinese as a Second Language (Hardcover)
Fangyuan Yuan, Baozhang He, Wenze Hu
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Pedagogical Grammar and Grammar Pedagogy in Chinese as a Second Language is the first book in the field of Chinese as a second language that brings together one overview article and eleven research studies surrounding the key words "grammar" "pedagogy" and "Chinese as a second language." The book is a dedication to the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Language Teachers Association - U.S. The studies included draw on different theoretical frameworks, adopt a range of methodological strategies, and address the questions of how grammatical knowledge should be effectively presented and in what capacity grammar competence could be better developed in and outside classrooms, based on which pedagogical recommendations and implications are advanced. The publication of this monograph is aimed at three goals: to promote a dialogue between the field of Chinese as a second language and general field of second/foreign language teaching and learning; to bridge a link among researchers in Chinese linguistics and Chinese applied linguistics; and to establish a closer tie between research and classroom practices in L2 Chinese. This monograph is intended for Chinese instructors, teacher educators, and graduate students and ideally suited for graduate courses and teacher training programs. It also provides insights for curriculum developers, material writers, and administrators.

Verbs of Speaking and the Linguistic Expression of Communication in the History of English (Hardcover, New edition): Christoph... Verbs of Speaking and the Linguistic Expression of Communication in the History of English (Hardcover, New edition)
Christoph Anton Xaver Hauf
R1,792 Discovery Miles 17 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

English verbs of speaking have been affected by profound and intriguing changes, in particular between Old and Middle English. These changes crucially involve the loss of the verb cwethan and its replacement by say, which remains the most common verb of speaking to this day. The present study provides an exhaustive corpus-based, cross-period, and multi-dimensional appraisal of verbs of speaking used as part of the linguistic expression of communication in the history of English situated within a frame-semantic and constructionist framework. Moreover, it elucidates the fascinating changes affecting the verbs used to talk about communication between Old and Middle English. Also, this study sheds light on the functions of medially placed reporting clauses emerging in the Middle English period.

Clause Structure and Adjuncts in Austronesian Languages is a collection of papers devoted to the syntactic analysis of modification and extraction strategies in Austronesian languages such as Kavalan, Malagasy, Niuean, Seediq, and Tagalog. Written by some of the leading scholars in the field, it elucidates the categorial and phrase structural status as well as the scopal behavior of sentence-level adverbs, ordering constraints on adjectival modifiers, and the nature of unbounded dependencies in interaction with Philippine-type voice systems. Guglielmo Cinque's universal ordering hypothesis for adverbs and current work on remnant movement serve as theoretical points of reference. More particularly the book contains an analysis of lower VP-adverbs in Kavalan as serial verbs (Chang), a defense of two types of adverbial heads in Seediq (Holmer), an account of possible DP-internal serializations in Niuean in terms of remnant movement (Kahnemuyipour Massam), a plea for relative, scope-based adverb ordering in Tagalog (Kaufman), a clefting approach to unbounded dependencies in Malagasy (Potsdam), a critical assessment of constraints on remnant movement as applied to adverb orderings in Malagasy (Thiersch), and an analysis of the Malagasy voice system on the basis of clitic left-dislocation (Travis). The editors' introduction undertakes a critical survey of the relevant empirical and theoretical background. A substantial part of the empirical facts are presented here for the first time, and the book will inspire additional systematic investigation of the often neglected aspects of modificational strategies in Austronesian languages. The book will be of value to linguists interested in contemporary syntactic analysis and to everyone seeking a deeper understanding of the formal properties of Austronesian.

Hongming Zhang, Youyong Qian
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Prosody is one of the core components of language and speech, indicating information about syntax, turn-taking in conversation, types of utterances, such as questions or statements, as well as speakers' attitudes and feelings. This edited volume takes studies in prosody on Asian languages as well as examples from other languages. It brings together the most recent research in the field and also charts the influence on such diverse fields as multimedia communication and SLA. Intended for a wide audience of linguists that includes neighbouring disciplines such as computational sciences, psycholinguists, and specialists in language acquisition, Prosodic Studies is also ideal for scholars and researchers working in intonation who want a complement of information on specifics.

Prominence and Locality in Grammar - The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Questions and Reflexives (Paperback): Jianhua Hu Prominence and Locality in Grammar - The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Questions and Reflexives (Paperback)
Jianhua Hu
R1,401 Discovery Miles 14 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book challenges the current consensus on the analysis of wh-questions and reflexives from the perspective of the syntax-semantics interface. An integrated approach incorporating analyses of the interaction between different levels of linguistic knowledge is proposed. It argues that the derivation and interpretation of wh-questions and reflexives are not purely syntactic in nature but are regulated by principles operating at the syntax-semantics interface. Two general principles underlying our knowledge of language and cognition are proposed in this work. One is the Principle of Locality, and the other is the Principle of Prominence. It shows that although wh-quantification and reflexivization belong to two different domains of study in generative grammar, their derivation and interpretation are basically constrained by the complex interaction between prominence and locality in grammar. The first part of the book discusses how wh-questions are formed and interpreted in Chinese and English and shows that the formation and interpretation of wh-questions are constrained by the interaction between prominence and locality. It is shown that in wh-interpretation prominence is used to define the set generators so as to licence other wh-words in the pair-list reading in multiple wh-questions. It also discusses wh-island effects in English and Chinese, and unlike previous claims made in the literature (cf. Huang 1982a, 1982b), it argues that the so-called wh-island effects in English are also observed in Chinese. The second part of the book investigates the role that prominence and locality play in reflexive binding. It is shown that in reflexive binding, the binding domain of the reflexive is defined by prominence. It proposes a unified account for both the noncontrastive compound reflexive and the bare reflexive in Chinese and shows that they are constrained by the same reflexive binding condition proposed in this work, though they employ different definitions of the most prominent NPs to determine their binding domains. Prominence and Locality in Grammar: The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Quesitons and Reflexives is an important theoretical contribution to the syntax-semantics interface studies and can serve as a valuable text for graduate students and scholars in the field of Chinese, linguistics, and cognitive science.

Focus Manifestation in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese - A Comparative Perspective (Paperback): Peppina Po-Lun Lee Focus Manifestation in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese - A Comparative Perspective (Paperback)
Peppina Po-Lun Lee
R1,434 Discovery Miles 14 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

One prominent function of natural language is to convey information. One peculiarity is that it does not do so randomly, but in a structured way, with information structuring formally recognized to be a component of grammar. Among all information structuring notions, focus is one primitive needed to account for all phenomena. Focus Manifestation in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese: A Comparative Perspective aims to examine from a semantic perspective how syntactic structures and focus adverbs in Mandarin Chinese and semantic particles in Cantonese conspire to encode focus structures and determine focus manifestation in Chinese. With both being tonal languages, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese manifest different morpho-syntactic configurations to mark focus. A general principle governing focus marking in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese is given in the book, which aims to give a better understanding of the underlying principles the two use to mark additive and restrictive meanings, and related focus interpretations. Particular attention is also drawn to the co-occurrence of multiple forms of restrictive and additive particles in Cantonese, including adverbs, verbal suffixes and sentence-final particles. Linearity has been shown to be an important parameter to determine how focus is structured in Cantonese. This book is aimed at advanced graduate students, researchers, and scholars working on Chinese linguistics, syntax and semantics, and comparative dialectal grammar.

Ethnosyntax - Explorations in Grammar and Culture (Hardcover): N.J. Enfield Ethnosyntax - Explorations in Grammar and Culture (Hardcover)
N.J. Enfield
R5,339 Discovery Miles 53 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Meanings of cultural importance are found not only in words but also in the very grammar of a language. This exciting volume presents eleven original studies of the relationship between grammar, culture, and cognition, with data from languages and cultures from around the world. Contributors discuss a wide variety of grammatical phenomena. This book shows that the study of culture can help to understand how and why languages differ in the ways they do.

Architecture of the Periphery in Chinese - Cartography and Minimalism (Paperback): Victor Pan Architecture of the Periphery in Chinese - Cartography and Minimalism (Paperback)
Victor Pan
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Architecture of the Periphery in Chinese offers a comprehensive survey on the fine structure of the sentence peripheral domain in Mandarin Chinese from a cartographic perspective. Different functional projections hosting sentence-final particles, implicit operators and other informational components are hierarchically ordered according to the "Subjectivity Scale Constraint" functioning at syntax-discourse interface. Three questions will be essentially addressed: What is the order? How to determine such an order? Why such an order? This research not only gives a thorough examination of the peripheral elements in Chinese but also improves the general understanding of the ordering issue in the left-periphery crosslinguistically. This book is aimed at scholars interested in Chinese syntax or generative syntax.
