Linguistics, Anthropology and Philosophy in the French Enlightenment - A contribution to the history of the relationship... Linguistics, Anthropology and Philosophy in the French Enlightenment - A contribution to the history of the relationship between language theory and ideology (Hardcover)
Ulrich Ricken; Translated by Robert Norton
R5,346 Discovery Miles 53 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Linguistics, Anthropology and Philosophy in the French Enlightenment treats the development of linguistic thought from Descartes to Degerando as both a part of and a determining factor in the emergence of modern consciousness. Through his careful analyses of works by the most influential thinkers of the time, Ulrich Ricken demonstrates that the central significance of language in the philosophy of the enlightenment, reflected and acted upon contemporary understandings of humanity as a whole. The author discusses contemporary developments in England, Germany and Italy and covers an unusually broad range of writers and ideas including Leibniz, Wolff, Herder and Humboldt. This study places history of language philosophy within the broader context of the history of ideas, aesthetics and historical anthropology and will be of interest to scholars working in these disciplines.

Attlee's Labour Governments 1945-51 (Paperback, New): Robert Pearce Attlee's Labour Governments 1945-51 (Paperback, New)
Robert Pearce
R1,152 Discovery Miles 11 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Labour governments of 1945-51 are among the most important and controversial in modern British history, and have been the focus of extensive research over the last fifteen years. In this study, Robert Pearce makes the results of this research available in a concise and accessible form, whilst encouraging students to formulate their own interpretations. He looks at the main political personalities of the period, sets their work in the context of Labour history since 1900, and examines their domestic, foreign and imperial achievements.

The Women's Movements in the United States and Britain from the 1790s to the 1920s (Paperback): Christine Bolt The Women's Movements in the United States and Britain from the 1790s to the 1920s (Paperback)
Christine Bolt
R1,917 Discovery Miles 19 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a study of the development of the feminist movement in Britain and America during the 19th century. Acknowledging the similar social conditions in both countries during that period, the author suggests that a real sense of distinctiveness did exist between British and American feminists. American feminists were inspired by their own perception of the superiority of their social circumstances, for example, whereas British feminists found their cause complicated by traditional considerations of class. Christine Bolt aims to show that the story of the American and British women's movement is one of national distinctiveness within an international cause. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of American and British political history and women's studies.

A History of Indian Economic Thought (Hardcover, New): Ajit K. Dasgupta A History of Indian Economic Thought (Hardcover, New)
Ajit K. Dasgupta
R4,142 Discovery Miles 41 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first overview of Indian economic thought to appear in English, this book provides rich insights into both economic issues and the workings of the Indian mind. Arguing that it would be inappropriate to rely solely on formal economic analyses, Ajit K. Dasgupta draws on a wide range of sources: epics, religious and moral texts, public speeches, addresses, and newspaper articles. What emerges is an intricate mosaic reflecting India's different cultures and civilizations.
The book examines the ways that Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam address economic issues. It demonstrates the deep impact of British colonial rule, both in propagating Western economic ideas and in provoking Indian theories of colonialism and underdevelopment. The book also includes chapters on Ghandian economics and Indian economic thought since Independence. Dasgupta looks at past thought from the vantage point of modern economic theory, particularly development economics. His lucid study reveals the legacy of Indian thought in economics and its relevance to contemporary India.

The French Revolution - Rethinking the Debate (Paperback, New): Gwynne Lewis The French Revolution - Rethinking the Debate (Paperback, New)
Gwynne Lewis
R1,185 Discovery Miles 11 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A short introductory history of the French Revolution which covers the social, economic and cultural, as well as intellectual and political aspects. Taking this broad approach to the subject, Gwynne Lewis presents an interpretive essay which reviews recent debates and re-assesses the nature and impact of the Revolution. The author illustrates not only the variety of historical interpretations but also the range of different contexts in which the Revolution has been set. Six thematic chapters highlight the importance of analysis and interpretation in the study of a historical event, and the conclusion evaluates early "orthodox" and recent "revisionist" approaches to provide students with an intelligible resume of the Revolution and its historians.

Anna Maria van Schurman, 'The Star of Utrecht' - The Educational Vision and Reception of a Savante (Hardcover, New... Anna Maria van Schurman, 'The Star of Utrecht' - The Educational Vision and Reception of a Savante (Hardcover, New Ed)
Anne R. Larsen
R4,611 Discovery Miles 46 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dutch Golden Age scholar Anna Maria van Schurman was widely regarded throughout the seventeenth century as the most learned woman of her age. She was 'The Star of Utrecht','The Dutch Minerva','The Tenth Muse', 'a miracle of her sex', 'the incomparable Virgin', and 'the oracle of Utrecht'. As the first woman ever to attend a university, she was also the first to advocate, boldly, that women should be admitted into universities. A brilliant linguist, she mastered some fifteen languages. She was the first Dutch woman to seek publication of her correspondence. Her letters in several languages Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and French - to the intellectual men and women of her time reveal the breadth of her interests in theology, philosophy, medicine, literature, numismatics, painting, sculpture, embroidery, and instrumental music. This study addresses Van Schurman's transformative contribution to the seventeenth-century debate on women's education. It analyses, first, her educational philosophy; and, second, the transnational reception of her writings on women's education, particularly in France. Anne Larsen explores how, in advocating advanced learning for women, Van Schurman challenged the educational establishment of her day to allow women to study all the arts and the sciences. Her letters offer fascinating insights into the challenges that scholarly women faced in the early modern period when they sought to define themselves as intellectuals, writers, and thoughtful contributors to the social good.

The End of the Communist Revolution (Paperback, New): Robert V. Daniels The End of the Communist Revolution (Paperback, New)
Robert V. Daniels
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"The End of the Communist Revolution" puts "perestroika" firmly in its long-term historical perspective, as the final stage of a long revolutionary process, and within the context of Leninism, Stalinism and Breshnevism. Daniels puts forward a new interpretation of the striking events in the latter half of the 20th-century which led to the downfall of Gorbachev and Communism in the late Soviet Union. Embracing the whole Soviet experience since 1917, he argues that Gorbachev's reforms did not constitute a new revolution, but a "moderate revolutionary revival" with a return to the decentralist, anti-imperial principles that inspired the original moderate phase of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Emphasizing continuity with the past, Daniels questions conventional solutions about future political and economic alternatives in the region. By stressing the way that reform unfolded, not just in the Breshnev era, but in the long historical background, Daniels provides an original and integrated interpretation of Soviet history.

The Social Scientific Gaze - The Social Question and the Rise of Academic Social Science in Sweden (Hardcover, New edition):... The Social Scientific Gaze - The Social Question and the Rise of Academic Social Science in Sweden (Hardcover, New edition)
Per Wisselgren
R4,003 Discovery Miles 40 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The social sciences have, ever since they were first established as academic disciplines, played a foundational role in most spheres of modern society - in policy-making, education, the media and public debate - and hence also, indirectly, for our self-understanding as social beings. The Social Scientific Gaze examines the discursive formation of academic social science in the historical context of the 'social question', that is, the protracted and wide-ranging discussions on the social problems of modernity that were being debated with increased intensity during the nineteenth century. Empirically, the study focuses on the Loren Foundation, a combined private funding agency and early research institute, which was set up in 1885 to promote the rise of Swedish social science and to investigate the social question. Comprising an heuristic case, the close analysis of the Foundation makes it possible not only to reconstruct its basic ideas and practices, but also to situate its activities in broader historical and sociological context. The Social Scientific Gaze argues that the rise of Swedish social science may be seen not only as an 'answer' to the social 'question', but also as one attempt alongside others - including contemporary social literature, the philantropic reform movement, and the introduction of modern social policy - to conceptualize, mobilize and regulate the social sphere. In this process it is furthermore shown how an ambigious yet distinct 'social scientific gaze' was discursively articulated.

Socialism - Ideals, Ideologies, and Local Practice (Hardcover): C. M. Hann Socialism - Ideals, Ideologies, and Local Practice (Hardcover)
C. M. Hann
R4,003 R2,807 Discovery Miles 28 070 Save R1,196 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Socialism as a political system may be on the wane, yet no one can doubt that its cultural legacies will make themselves felt for years to come, and on a worldwide scale. The contributors to this volume adopt a variety of anthropological approaches to illuminate changes which have removed socialists from power in many countries. Presenting detailed ethnographic accounts across a wide range of countries, they bring out the factors which have given socialism such a profound worldwide impact, including a substantial impact upon the discipline of anthropology itself. The first sustained and wide-ranging investigation of socialism by social anthropologists, this volume will enable readers to understand better how socialism has been experienced by millions of people and thereby to now better understand how they may cope with post-socialist dilemmas.

Philosophy and Theology in the Middle Ages (Paperback, New): G.R. Evans Philosophy and Theology in the Middle Ages (Paperback, New)
G.R. Evans
R1,219 Discovery Miles 12 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the ancient world being a philosopher was a practical alternative to being a Christian. Philosophical systems offered intellectual, practical and moral codes for living. By the Middle Ages however philosophy was largely, though inconsistently, incorporated into Christian belef. From the end of the Roman Empire to the Reformation and Renaissance of the sixteenth century Christian theologians had a virtual monopoly on higher education. The complex interaction between theology and philosophy, which was the result of the efforts of Christian leaders and thinkers to assimilate the most sophisticated ideas of science and secular learning into their own system of thought, is the subject of this book. Augustine, as the most widely read author in the Middle Ages, is the starting point. Dr Evans then discusses the classical sources in general which the medieval scholar would have had access to when he wanted to study philosophy and its theological implications. Part One ends with an analysis of the problems of logic, language and rhetoric. In Part Two the sequence of topics - God, cosmos, man - follows the outline of the summa, or systematic encyclopedia of theology.

Man and the Biosphere: - Toward a Coevolutionary Political Economy (Paperback): Kenneth M. Stokes Man and the Biosphere: - Toward a Coevolutionary Political Economy (Paperback)
Kenneth M. Stokes
R1,652 Discovery Miles 16 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This four-part monograph traces the dialectical development of economic thought from the Physiocrats through Marx to the present. It is a broad treatment of the history of intellectual thought that bridges economic and the social sciences on the one hand, with natural science and biology in particular on the other. The author is concerned with systems theory and treats the economy from the perspective of the biophysical thermodynamic dimensions of the economic processes. He closes his analysis with a discussion of organizational theory that relates to the formation of institutions and the issues of freedom in a technically dominated society. The book comes full circle in examining the moral and ethical concerns that first influenced the Physiocrats and other founding fathers of economic science.

On the History of Economic Thought (Hardcover): A.W. Bob Coats On the History of Economic Thought (Hardcover)
A.W. Bob Coats
R5,531 Discovery Miles 55 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A. W. Coats has made a unique contribution to the history of economic thought, economic methodology and the sociology of economics. To date, most of his work has been in the form of articles which are scattered widely in journals, most of which are not easily accessible. This series of three volumes makes his most important contributions widely available in a permanent form.
"On the History of Economic Thought" is introduced by an essay in intellectual autobiography outlining the development of Coats' key ideas and the distinctive elements of his approach. Two key themes are: the difference between British and American economics, both in content and in the practice of the profession; and the interrelationships between economic ideas, events or conditions, and policy issues.
The essays in this volume cover subjects from the late seventeenth century to the late twentieth century, from the Mercantilists to Adam Smith and Alfred Marshall. Essays on the early American institutionalists will be of particular interest due to the current revival of interest in this topic. The book concludes with an assessment of the current state of the discipline, with a discussion of the advantages available to a historian of economics as a commentator on recent developments. Volumes II and III, now in preparation, will cover "The Methodology of Economics" and "The Sociology and Methodology of" "Economics."

Rethinking Liberty before Liberalism (Hardcover, New Ed): Hannah Dawson, Annelien De Dijn Rethinking Liberty before Liberalism (Hardcover, New Ed)
Hannah Dawson, Annelien De Dijn
R2,111 Discovery Miles 21 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Opens up new histories of freedom and republicanism by building on Quentin Skinner's ground-breaking Liberty before Liberalism nearly twenty five years after its initial publication. Leading historians and philosophers reveal the neo-Roman conception of liberty that Skinner unearthed as a normative and historical hermeneutic tool of enormous, ongoing power. The volume thinks with neo-Romanism to offer reinterpretations of individual thinkers, such as Montaigne, Grotius and Locke. It probes the role of neo-Roman liberty within hierarchies and structures beyond that of citizen and state - namely, gender, slavery, and democracy. Finally, it reassesses the relationships between neo-Romanism and other languages in the history of political thought: liberalism, conservatism, socialism, and the human rights tradition. The volume concludes with a major reappraisal by Skinner himself.

The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature (Hardcover): C. G. Jung The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature (Hardcover)
C. G. Jung
R2,913 Discovery Miles 29 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature offers unique and penetrating insights into the lives and opinions of some of the most significant players in the cultural life of the twentieth century. Carl Gustav Jung was at the heart of that cultural life, pioneering, along with Freud, a new interpretation of what it meant to be human in the modern age. This volume reveals the full range of Jung's involvement in this process, from his famous analysis of 'Psychology and Literature' to his landmark texts on Joyce's Ulysses and Picasso's paintings. Jung writes of Freud from the perspective of one who was "permitted a deep glimpse into the mind of this remarkable man," and through the memories and opinions recorded in The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature, the reader is offered a similar privilege.

Epicurean Tradition (Paperback, New Ed): Howard Jones Epicurean Tradition (Paperback, New Ed)
Howard Jones
R1,558 Discovery Miles 15 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Epicureanism has had a long and complex history. Established in Greece in the fourth century BC in response to the peculiar needs of a new age, it gained an immediate and widespread following throughout the Mediterranean world, and in Roman times competed on equal terms with Stoicism for the allegiance of the citizens of the empire. It was singled out by the early Church as a dangerous enemy of the faith, and the philosophy of the Garden became the target of a bitter campaign of denunciation and distortion; it was a one-dimensional Epicurus - the champion of earthly delights - who kept the name of the School alive throughout the Middle Ages. Coinciding with a renewed interest in the antique world, an Epicureanism truer to its classical parent re-emerged to add an important dimension to Renaissance philosophical debate, and in the 16th and 17th centuries, Epicurean theory contributed significantly to the growth of the new science of physics. Howard Jones' book, which is divided equally between the classical and post-classical eras, documents the story as it unfolds. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics of classics, medieval philosophy, histo

The Quest for Utopia - Jewish Political Ideas and Institutions Through the Ages (Paperback): Zvi Y. Gitelman The Quest for Utopia - Jewish Political Ideas and Institutions Through the Ages (Paperback)
Zvi Y. Gitelman
R1,193 Discovery Miles 11 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This exploration of the Jewish political tradition elucidates a long, rich, and diverse experience of both sovereignty and dispersed statelessness. It holds insights, as Zvi Gitelman points out in his introductory chapter, for anyone interested comparative and ethnic politics, Jewish history, and the prehistory of contemporary Israeli politics. Stuart Cohen analyzes the "covenant idea" and the constitutional character of ancient Israel, which had a profound influence on Western political thought through the medium of the Bible. Gerald Blidstein examines rabbinic strategies for accommodation to the realities of Jewish dispersion in the middle Ages, while Robert Chazan focuses on communal authority and self-governance in the same period. Jonathan Frankel and Paula Hyman move the study into modern times with attempts to characterize the diverse patterns of Jewish political culture and activity in different parts of Europe, in the process revealing the dynamics of political cultural influence. Finally, Peter Medding looks at the "new politics" of contemporary American Jews - as voters, as public officials, and as organizational actors.

The Thirst for Annihilation - Georges Bataille and Virulent Nihilism (Hardcover, New): Nick Land The Thirst for Annihilation - Georges Bataille and Virulent Nihilism (Hardcover, New)
Nick Land
R4,147 Discovery Miles 41 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An important literary and philosophical figure, Georges Bataille has had a significant influence on other French writers, such as Foucault, Derrida and Baudrillard. Written as a "communion", this book looks at Bataille's theoretical issues in philosophy, sociology, psychodynamics, politics and poetry. Cultural modernity is diagnosed down to its Kantian bedrock with its transcendental philosophy of the object, but Bataille's writings cut violently across this tightly disciplined reading to reveal the strong underlying currents that bear us towards chaos and dissolution - the violent impulse to escape, the thirst for annihilation.
