Highly controversial when it was first published in 1981, Alasdair
MacIntyre's After Virtue has since established itself as a landmark
work in contemporary moral philosophy. In this book, MacIntyre
sought to address a crisis in moral language that he traced back to
a European Enlightenment that had made the formulation of moral
principles increasingly difficult. In the search for a way out of
this impasse, MacIntyre returns to an earlier strand of ethical
thinking, that of Aristotle, who emphasised the importance of
'virtue' to the ethical life. More than thirty years after its
original publication, After Virtue remains a work that is
impossible to ignore for anyone interested in our understanding of
ethics and morality today.
A Reader’s Guide to Contemporary Literary Theory is a classic introduction to the complex yet crucial area of literary theory. This book is known for its clear, accessible style and its thorough, logical approach, guiding the reader through the essentials of literary theory. It includes two new chapters: ‘New Materialisms’ which incorporates ecocriticism, animal studies, posthumanism and thing theory; ‘21st Century and Future Developments’ which includes technology, digital humanities, ethics and affect.

"Understanding Phenomenology" provides a guide to one of the most important schools of thought in modern philosophy. The book traces phenomenology's historical development, beginning with its founder, Edmund Husserl and his "pure" or "transcendental" phenomenology, and continuing with the later, "existential" phenomenology of Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book also assesses later, critical responses to phenomenology - from Derrida to Dennett - as well as the continued significance of phenomenology for philosophy today. Written for anyone coming to phenomenology for the first time, the book guides the reader through the often bewildering array of technical concepts and jargon associated with phenomenology and provides clear explanations and helpful examples to encourage and enhance engagement with the primary texts.

This popular, world-wide selling textbook teaches engineering
mathematics in a step-by-step fashion and uniquely through
engineering examples and exercises which apply the techniques right
from their introduction. This contextual use of mathematics is
highly motivating, as with every topic and each new page students
see the importance and relevance of mathematics in engineering. The
examples are taken from mechanics, aerodynamics, electronics,
engineering, fluid dynamics and other areas. While being general
and accessible for all students, they also highlight how
mathematics works in any individual's engineering discipline. The
material is often praised for its careful pace, and the author
pauses to ask questions to keep students reflecting. Proof of
mathematical results is kept to a minimum. Instead the book
develops learning by investigating results, observing patterns,
visualizing graphs and answering questions using technology. This
textbook is ideal for first year undergraduates and those on
pre-degree courses in Engineering (all disciplines) and Science.
New to this Edition: - Fully revised and improved on the basis of
student feedback - New sections - More examples, more exam
questions - Vignettes and photos of key mathematicians Accompanying

This widely adopted text starts with the fundamentals--what is economic growth, what is development, and what is the relationship between these two concepts? The authors examine orthodox theories of growth grounded in different schools of economics (classical, neoclassical, Keynesian, neoliberal) before considering critical alternatives (Marxist, socialist, poststructuralist, and feminist). The book elucidates the basic ideas that underpin contemporary controversies and debates surrounding economic growth, environmental crisis, and global inequality. It highlights points of contention among the various theories andlinks them to historical and current world events.

Educational Leadership in Becoming reconsiders educational leadership in its current forms, and presents a more plausible form of educational leadership to contend with the complexities currently found in universities and schools. Much of the literature in vogue concerning educational leadership ranges from transactional to transformative representations of the concept in relation to educational management and policy, curriculum inquiry and pedagogical action. The primary aim of this book is to revisit some of the dominant understandings of educational leadership and to offer an extended view of the practice along the lines of potentiality and becoming.
Davids and Waghid argue that all current forms of educational leadership are insufficient to enact responsible human action, particularly when it comes to addressing the combined issues of globalisation and equitable redress and transformation, whether in relation to leading schools or universities. The primary objective of the book is to draw on the Agambian notion of becoming in order to show that an educational leadership in becoming is better placed to not only address the myriad challenges besetting education, but to also enhance the potential of leadership in action.
The book addresses an international audience by analysing conceptions of transformative leadership and should be read by anyone who is interested in education and educational leadership, as well as the impact of neoliberal agendas on education and society. It should also appeal to those interested in the philosophy of education.
Table of Contents
1. Contemporary educational leadership theory and practice 2. Neoliberal globalised education and the deficiencies of educational leadership patterns 3. The dominance of transformative educational leadership 4. On Lyotard, Foucault and Derrida: Towards an educational leadership of critique 5. Three case studies of transformative educational leadership in the realm of critical pedagogical actions 6. Educational leadership in becoming – on the potential of leadership in action 7. Health and Safety: Risk Management is the clearest and most
comprehensive book on risk management available today. This newly
revised fifth edition takes into account new developments in
legislation, standards and good practice. ISO 45001, the
international health and safety management system standard, is
given comprehensive treatment, and the latest ISO 9004 and ISO
19011 have also been addressed. The book is divided into four main
parts. Part 1.1 begins with a basic introduction to the techniques
of health and safety risk management and continues with a
description of ISO 45001. Part 1.2 covers basic human factors
including how the sense organs work and the psychology of the
individual. Part 2.1 deals with more advanced techniques of risk
management including advanced incident investigation, audit and
risk assessment, and Part 2.2 covers a range of advanced human
factors topics including human error and decision making. This
authoritative treatment of health and safety risk management is
essential reading for both students working towards degrees,
diplomas and postgraduate or vocational qualifications, and
experienced health and safety professionals, who will find it
invaluable as a reference.
In this concise yet comprehensive survey, Kirsten E. Schulze analyzes the causes, course and consequences of the Arab–Israeli conflict, exploring the particular dynamics of this conflict and the numerous attempts at its resolution. Covering pivotal events ranging from the creation of the State of Israel to the first and second Lebanon Wars and the Arab Spring, the book traces the development of the conflict from its intellectual roots in the nineteenth century to the present day.
This third edition has been revised throughout to bring the text up to date
with recent events, including:
• a completely new chapter on the Gaza Wars from 2006 to 2014
• new material on the Arab Spring and its implications for Israel
• an updated discussion of the ongoing negotiations for peace.
Containing a diverse collection of primary source documents, a chronology of key dates, a glossary, a guide to further reading and a Who’s Who summarizing the careers and contributions of the main figures, this book is essential to understanding the background to and worldwide significance of the continuing violence between Israel and Palestine and is valuable reading for all students of the Arab–Israeli conflict.
