With a racing career spanning more than four decades, coming second is never an option for Peter Lindenberg. How Words Mean introduces a new approach to the role of words and
other linguistic units in the construction of meaning. It does so
by addressing the interaction between non-linguistic concepts and
the meanings encoded in language. It develops an account of how
words are understood when we produce and hear language in situated
contexts of use. It proposes two theoretical constructs, the
lexical concept and the cognitive model. These are central to the
accounts of lexical representation and meaning construction
developed, giving rise to the Theory of Lexical Concepts and
Cognitive Models (or LCCM Theory).
Langland's Piers Plowman is a profoundly Christian poem which nevertheless has enjoyed a wide general appeal. Readers - both religious and non-religious - have been drawn by the power of Langland's fictive imagination, the rich variety of imaginary worlds in his great dream-poem. Langland's Fictions examines the construction of the ten dreams which make up the B Text of Pears Plowman, and explores the relation of these dream-fictions to those realities with which the poet was chiefly preoccupied. This relationship is discussed under three main headings: 'fictions of the divided mind', in which the poet's mixed feelings about matters such as the value of learning find expression in imagined scenes and actions; 'fictions of history', in which the main events of salvation history are relived in the parallel worlds of dream; and 'fictions of the self', in which Langland's doubtful sense of his own moral standing as a man and a poet apparently finds expression. This chapter also addresses the controversial question of 'autobiographical elements' in the poem. John Burrow's lively and considered study is a major contribution to our understanding of one of medieval literature's most enduring works.
The Syntax of Ellipsis investigates a number of elliptical
constructions found in Dutch dialects within the framework of the
Minimalist Program. Using two case studies, Van Craenenbroeck
argues that both the PF-deletion and the pro-theory of ellipsis are
needed to account for the full range of elliptical phenomena
attested in natural language.

South African poet and political activist Dennis Brutus (1924-2009) wrote poetry of the most exquisite lyrical beauty and intense power. And through his various political activities, he played a uniquely significant role in mobilising and intensifying opposition to injustice and oppression - initially in South Africa, but later throughout the rest of the world as well. This book focuses on the life of Dennis Brutus in South Africa from his childhood until he went into exile on an exit permit in 1966. It is also an attempt to acknowledge Brutus' literary and political work and, in a sense, to reintroduce Brutus to South Africa. This book places his own voice at the centre of his life story. It is told primarily in his own words - through newspaper and journal articles, tape recordings, interviews, speeches, court records and correspondence. It draws extensively on archival material not yet available in the public domain, as well as on interviews with several people who interacted with Brutus during his early years in South Africa. In particular, it examines his participation in some of the most influential organisations of his time, including the Teachers' League of South Africa, the Anti-Coloured Affairs Department movement and the Coloured National Convention, the Co-ordinating Committee for International Recognition in Sport, the South African Sports Association and the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee, which all campaigned against racism in South African sport. Brutus left behind an important legacy in literature involvement, in community affairs and politics in as well.
Joseph Conrad, Jean Rhys, and Pramoedya Ananta Toer are writers
renowned for crafting narratives of great technical skill that
resonate with potent truths on the colonial condition. Yet given
the generational and geographical boundaries that separated them,

Dublin-born Thomas Southerne has long been admired by scholars as one of the most important dramatists of the Restoration, but the lack of a modern edition has prevented his plays from taking their deserved place alongside those of Congreve, Wycherly, and Etherege. This two-volume collection--based on an exhaustive study of the earliest editions--brings together his ten plays and the small surviving body of non-dramatic writing. Volume Two features two of Southerne's best known tragedies, The Fatal Marriage and Oroonoko, based on stories by Aphra Behn, and the variants between the censored and uncensored texts of his political tragedy The Spartan Dame. Iris Murdoch's philosophy has long attracted readers searching for
a morally serious yet humane perspective on human life. Her

A captivating and heartfelt memoir from a true music aficionado, a senior British diplomat and a nuclear environmental expert in Russia. Hearing Yehudi Menuhin play solo Bach and Bartok in Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre in 1959 would prove an epiphany for the seventeen-year-old Desmond Cecil. Already an advanced oboe student of Joy Boughton, he decided there and then, against all the odds, to become a violinist. This delightful autobiography tells the remarkable journey its author took in his quest to follow his passion to perform music. He decided, after Chemistry and PPE at Oxford, to move in 1965 to Switzerland for full-time violin study with the illustrious Max Rostal, staying there for five years as a professional violinist. Eventually realising he had started the violin too late to become a top soloist, he returned to the UK to join HM Diplomatic Service in 1970. A fluent linguist, he spent the next twenty-five years serving in embassies abroad and was eventually appointed CMG by HM The Queen. He took early retirement in 1995 to work as an international political/funding adviser for the UK and then the French state nuclear energy industries, with extensive experience of nuclear environmental clean-up in Russia after the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Along with fascinating insights into his musical, diplomatic and energy callings and sharp anecdotes of some of the important European and British politicians of the past forty years, Cecil also renders tender and charming stories of the many famous musicians he has known and performed with - nowadays on his own authentic Stradivari violin, formally entitled the '1724 Cecil'.
The close connection between philosophy of language and philosophy of law has been recognized for decades through the work of many influential legal philosophers. This volume brings recent advances in philosophy of language to bear on contemporary debates about the nature of law and legal interpretation. The book builds on recent work in pragmatics and speech-act theory to explain how, and to what extent, legal content is determined by linguistic considerations. At the same time, the analysis shows that some of the unique features of communication in the legal domain - in particular, its strategic nature - can be employed to put pressure on certain assumptions in philosophy of language. This enables a more nuanced picture of how semantic and pragmatic determinants of communication work in complex and large-scale systems such as law. Chapters build on explanations of key elements of statutory language, such as the distinction between what is said and what is implicated, the possibility of ascribing truth-values to legal prescriptions and the structure of legal inferences, the various forms of vagueness in the law, the distinctions between vagueness, ambiguity, and polysemy in legal language, and the distinction between concept and conceptions, mostly in the context of constitutional interpretation. The book demonstrates that paying close attention to the kind of speech acts legal directives are, and how they determine the content of the law, enables a better understanding of the boundaries between normative and linguistic determinants of legal content.
