Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An... Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An Autoethnographic Inquiry (Hardcover)
Dee Phyllis Genetti
R3,782 Discovery Miles 37 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder provides an autoethnographic qualitative study that portrays the author's recovery from a devastating life changing event - a car crash resulting in the hybrid diagnosis of TBI and PTSD, leading to PTG and identity transformation over a ten-year recovery period. In so doing, the text offers a comprehensive literature review on TBI, PTSD, PTG, and disability culture. Throughout, the author explores whether growth (PTG) and distress (PTSD), and whether TBI and PTSD can co-exist. Having lost her ability to read and write, the author had to learn how to learn, to heal and to have faith again. As a licensed trauma therapist and researcher, she collected self-observational data by writing her actual behaviors, thoughts and emotions in real time, both in a field and a process journal, even before she could write in full sentences. The many symptoms and co-morbidities of TBI, PTSD and the tenets of PTG are portrayed as they evolved in recovery showing the behavior and characteristics of each. The text refers to actual journal entries, medical records, and clinical notes from rehabilitation specialists, alternating between her clinical analysis and interpretation. The findings show that tragedy and suffering can lead to growth and positive change (PTG) after TBI, even though the precipitating trauma and psychological distress (PTSD) may persist for years. Changes are seen in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and philosophies of life. This chronicled account of the author's emergent recovery from patient to doctor is intended to benefit neuro-rehabilitation service providers (neuropsychologists, primary care physicians, speech-language pathologists) and also mental health clinicians who can see the evolution of Posttraumatic Growth for what is now the new next step for many in PTSD recovery.

Applying the Therapeutic Function of Professional Supervision - Attending to the Emotional Impacts of Human Service Work... Applying the Therapeutic Function of Professional Supervision - Attending to the Emotional Impacts of Human Service Work (Hardcover)
Nicki Weld
R3,768 Discovery Miles 37 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings a fresh approach and conversation to the practice of professional supervision for human services by specifically articulating its often performed, but unnamed and under-explored therapeutic function. The discussion of the therapeutic function is timely given the rising complexities in our world, and the increasing awareness of emotional impacts of human service work. These impacts include stress, distress, emotional labour, indirect trauma, and direct trauma. Posing a challenge and invitation to supervisors to comfortably inhabit the therapeutic function of supervision to increase emotional support to workers, it places safe practice and worker wellbeing at the heart of supervision to enable high quality service delivery for often the most vulnerable in society. While underpinned by theory, it is written to be practically applied and is developed from a 'lived experience' perspective, offering a unique glimpse into actual practice. By modelling one of the main aims of professional supervision, which is to facilitate and enable the integration of experience into learning and knowledge, it will be of interest to all practitioners across a broad range of human services, particularly both new and experienced supervisors.

Cicely Saunders - Selected writings 1958-2004 (Hardcover): Cicely Saunders Cicely Saunders - Selected writings 1958-2004 (Hardcover)
Cicely Saunders; Introduction by David Clark
R3,679 Discovery Miles 36 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cicely Saunders is universally acclaimed as a pioneer of modern hospice care. Trained initially in nursing and social work, she qualified in medicine in 1958 and subsequently dedicated the whole of her professional life to improving the care of the dying and bereaved people. Founding St. Christopher's Hospice in London in 1967, she encouraged a radical new approach to end of life care combining attention to physical, social, emotional and spiritual problems, brilliantly captured in her concept of "total pain." Her ideas about clinical care, education and research have been hugely influential, leading to numerous prizes and awards in recognition of her humanitarian achievements. This book includes a selection of Cicely Saunders' most important writings throughout a period of over forty years.
Full articles, chapters, editiorials, reviews, and commentaries include important clinical themes relating to the care of dying people such as pain and symptom management, issues of communication and truth telling, and the needs of particular patient groups, such as those with cancer and other diseases. The book includes pieces that reflect on the wider development of the palliative care field and on policy and organizational issues. Some of the papers take up the theme of spiritual care at the end of life, as well as the question of euthanasia, raising in turn issues of a wider theological and philosophical nature.
The articles are written for a multi-disciplinary audience and will be of enormous interest to many professionals now working in palliative care. The collection will become a key work of reference for those interested in the evolution of hospice and palliative care and will serveas an important sourcebook of many currently hard to obtain publications by the acknowledged founder of the modern hospice movement. This book will also stand as a remarkable testimony to the personal contribution of Cicely Saunders and the influence she has had upon the modern field of palliative and end of life care.

Kay Kennedy, Lucy Leclerc, Susan Campis
R391 Discovery Miles 3 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Human-Centered Leadership in Healthcare is a new leadership model based on the theory of complex systems. It addresses the requirement for healthcare organizations to develop environments that produce market leading outcomes which demonstrate value for patients. Since healthcare is a human-centric industry, it requires care for the leaders, the staff, and the patients. The Human-Centered Leadership model embraces the leader's focus on self-care and mindfulness while simultaneously focusing outward on others. The leader, at the center, adopts the attributes of the Awakener, the Connector, and the Upholder which result in practices leading to sustained quality outcomes, patient and staff satisfaction, and a healthy work environment. These practices and outcomes can be described as cultures of excellence, trust, and caring. The Human-Centered Leader in Healthcare understands that "It starts with you but it's not about you". Kay Kennedy, Lucy Leclerc, and Susan P. Campis' goal for Human-Centered Leadership in Healthcare is to develop the people who lead the people who care for the people.

Marianne Boenink, Harro van Lente, Ellen Moors
R3,355 Discovery Miles 33 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores international biomedical research and development on the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. It offers timely, multidisciplinary reflections on the social and ethical issues raised by promises of early diagnostics and asks under which conditions emerging diagnostic technologies can be considered a responsible innovation. The initial chapters in this edited volume provide an overview and a critical discussion of recent developments in biomedical research on Alzheimer's disease. Subsequent contributions explore the values at stake in current practices of dealing with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, both within and outside the biomedical domain. Novel diagnostic technologies for Alzheimer's disease emerge in a complex and shifting field, full of controversies. Innovating with care requires a precise mapping of how concepts, values and responsibilities are filled in through the confrontation of practices. In doing so, the volume offers a practice-based approach of responsible innovation that is also applicable to other fields of innovation.

Developing Your Compassion Strengths - A Guide for Healthcare Students and Practitioners (Hardcover): Mark Durkin Developing Your Compassion Strengths - A Guide for Healthcare Students and Practitioners (Hardcover)
Mark Durkin
R3,777 Discovery Miles 37 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This practical book suggests ways in which healthcare students and practitioners can develop their compassion strengths. Discussing what compassion is and means, it includes a new compassion strength model and a series of exercises the reader can use for reflecting on and developing their practice. A hallmark of healthcare practice is compassion, yet there is a lack of understanding as to what compassion is and how it can be developed in practice. The book begins with that challenge of defining compassion, particularly looking at healthcare contexts and making links between self-care and caring for others. It then presents a new, evidence-based holistic model that brings together key elements of compassion for self and other, along with a scale that readers can measure themselves against. Identifying eight strengths "self-care, connection, communication, competency, empathy, interpersonal skills, character and engagement" Durkin provides the theoretical background to each, accompanied with suggestions for practice and reflective activities. It ends with a selection of vignettes that readers can use to try out their strengths. Highlighting the concept of compassion strengths, and compassion as a way of being, this is an essential read for healthcare students and practitioners, whether involved in direct patient care or management.

Edge Entanglements with Mental Health Allyship, Research, and Practice - A Postqualitative Cartography (Hardcover): Tim... Edge Entanglements with Mental Health Allyship, Research, and Practice - A Postqualitative Cartography (Hardcover)
Tim Barlott, Jenny Setchell
R3,788 Discovery Miles 37 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Edge Entanglements traverses the borderlands of the community "mental health" sector by "plugging in" to concepts offered by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari along with work from Mad Studies, postcolonial, and feminist scholars. Barlott and Setchell demonstrate what postqualitative inquiry can do, surfacing the transformative potential of freely-given relationships between psychiatrised people and allies in the community. Thinking with theory, the authors map the composition and generative processes of freely-given, ally relationships. Edge Entanglements surfaces how such relationships can unsettle constraints of the mental health sector and produce creative possibilities for psychiatrised people. Affectionately creating harmonies between theory and empirical "data," the authors sketch ally relationships in ways that move. Allyship is enacted through micropolitical processes of becoming-complicit: ongoing movement towards taking on the struggle of another as your own. Barlott and Setchell's work offers both conceptual and practical insights into postqualitative experimentation, relationship-oriented mental health practice, and citizen activism that unsettles disciplinary boundaries. Ongoing, disruptive movements on the margins of the mental health sector - such as freely-given relationships - offer opportunities to be otherwise. Edge Entanglements is for people whose lives and practices are precariously interconnected with the mental health sector and are interested in doing things differently. This book is likely to be useful for novice and established (applied) new material and/or posthumanist scholars interested in postqualitative, theory-driven research; health practitioners seeking alternative or radical approaches to their work; and people interested in citizen advocacy, activism, and community organising in/out of the mental health sector.

Psychology of Behavioural Interventions and Pandemic Control - Lessons from COVID-19 (Paperback): Barrie Gunter Psychology of Behavioural Interventions and Pandemic Control - Lessons from COVID-19 (Paperback)
Barrie Gunter
R1,152 Discovery Miles 11 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Psychology of Behavioural Interventions and Pandemic Control is a unique text that examines the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to population risk factors and the efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions deployed by many governments around the world to bring the pandemic under control. The book presents critical and insightful lessons that can be drawn up to assess governments' performance in relation to the pandemic and to guide the construction of effective measures to put in place in readiness for any future public health crises on this scale. It starts by examining lessons learned from historical pandemics and then turns to early epidemiological modelling that influenced the decision of many governments to implement wide-ranging interventions designed to bring public behaviour under close control. It also examines the findings of research that tried to understand pre-existing population risks factors which had some mediating influences over COVID-19, mortality rates, and the effects of interventions. Early modelling work is critiqued, and the discussion also identifies weaknesses in early modelling research. The author, Barrie Gunter, goes on to consider ways in which multiple disciplines can be triangulated to produce more comprehensive models of risk. He also offers suggestions on how future pandemic-related research might be constructed to deliver more powerful analyses of the effects of interventions and the role played by different population risk factors. This insight might then deliver better policies for pandemic control and for safe release from that control. This is essential reading for students and researchers in psychology, public health and medical sciences. It would also be of interest to policy makers assessing government strategies, responses and performance.

Borderline Personality Disorder - A Practical Guide to Treatment (Paperback): Roy Krawitz, Christine Watson Borderline Personality Disorder - A Practical Guide to Treatment (Paperback)
Roy Krawitz, Christine Watson
R4,375 Discovery Miles 43 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Borderline personality disorder is a multidimensional disorder best considered as severe personality dysfunction. Around 2% of the population are thought to meet the criteria for the disorder, with approximately 1 in 10,000 people experiencing the most severe difficulties. This group is over-represented in the challenges facing mental health services.

Once seen as 'untreatable', people meeting diagnostic criteria for borderline personality disorder are all too often mistreated and misdiagnosed, resulting in prolonged and unhelpful relationships with services that are taxing to clients and clinicians alike.

Borderline Personality Disorder: A Practical Guide for Treatment draws on the latest research and clinical experience to provide an accessible and practical summary of treatment options. It provides hope and evidence that people meeting diagnostic criteria for the disorder can be treated effectively and successfully.

The book presents a pragmatic approach to care to be read by all members of mental health and substance use teams including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counsellors, mental health nurses and social workers.
