Impression Management in the Organization (Hardcover): Robert A. Giacalone, Paul Rosenfeld Impression Management in the Organization (Hardcover)
Robert A. Giacalone, Paul Rosenfeld
R4,602 Discovery Miles 46 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Impression management theory has been popular in sociology and social psychology for many years. This volume offers the first comprehensive application of impression management theory to organizational settings.
Researchers and practitioners in organizational settings have recently been using this theory as an explanatory model to focus on the roles and identities that "social actors" utilize in interpersonal situations. The theory of impression management provides a framework for the techniques and strategies people use in order to look good as well as the excuses and justifications they employ to avoid looking bad.

Stakeholder Entrepreneurship - Public and Private Partnerships (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Vanessa Ratten, Vitor Braga Stakeholder Entrepreneurship - Public and Private Partnerships (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Vanessa Ratten, Vitor Braga
R2,383 Discovery Miles 23 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book explores how stakeholders play a key part in any entrepreneurial endeavour because of their investment in the outcome. This book highlights that it is important to understand the reason and rationale for stakeholder engagement in entrepreneurship. Furthermore, this book showcases how there are different kinds of stakeholders from businesses directly linked to an entity to others that have a more policy influence on the industry segment. This book demonstrates that it is useful to understand to what extent stakeholders influence entrepreneurial decision making. This book states that most stakeholders tend to take an indirect role in the governance of a business in terms of what strategic decisions are made. This can change in times of crisis or change depending on the nature of the relationship. This book makes the case that stakeholders can take positive action in the form of advice or help. This book asserts that stakeholders who have an ongoing direct role are likely to invest more time and effort in an entrepreneurial endeavour. This book uncovers that it is important to re-evaluate on a continual basis whether the relationship is working and what needs to be done in order to increase efficiency. This edited book focuses on the role of stakeholders in an entrepreneurial context thereby being amongst the first research books to place specific attention on stakeholder management through public and private partnerships.

Building Business Value through Talent - The CEO and CHRO Partnership Guide (Hardcover): Thomas McGuire, Linda Brenner Building Business Value through Talent - The CEO and CHRO Partnership Guide (Hardcover)
Thomas McGuire, Linda Brenner
R817 Discovery Miles 8 170 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Building Business Value through Talent uniquely describes how a CEO and CHRO can accelerate business growth by working together to design and operationalize value-driven talent strategies. CEOs focus on decisions that will drive the business strategy forward while HR leaders routinely try to satisfy the needs of the largest number of employees. Often, the two align superficially or in administrative ways - and to put out the occasional flash fire. This book changes that dynamic by unlocking the investment potential of HR and empowering an unprecedented, tangible and measurable partnership between CEOs and CHROs. Framed as a product guide, the "product" is visualized as the HR Operating Model necessary to succeed in our modern economy: a business-based talent planning and investment strategy to sustain talent solutions and intellectual capital growth. This product guide provides the tools and insights that business leaders are seeking in order to win the ever more challenging battles in their war for talent. Learning and adopting these winning practices will provide a visible testament to the effective leadership of any CEO and CHRO team.

measure of the rate of innovation --research-and-development (R&D) expenditure per employee compared to new patents received per employee -- does not adequately capture a unique feature of SMEs, namely that owners and managers are often themselves innovators. For example, in Japan 52 per cent of SMEs' innovations reported in 1986 were created by employers, whereas in large firms 72 per cent of innovations were created by research technicians. Nevertheless, patchy evidence from Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States indicates that SMEs at least hold their own in terms of innovation compared to large firms. Perhaps most significantly, a recent study indicates that, while the total number of innovations is positively related to R&D expenditures, skilled labour and the degree to which large firms comprise the industry, in innovative industries innovative activity tends to emanate more from SMEs than large firms. This is probably because in industries where large firms dominate, SMEs need to be innovative to survive. There is much information to suggest that in technologies such as micro-electronics, new materials and biotechnology SMEs tend to be in the vanguard of innovation. Small and medium-sized enterprises as exporters. The contribution of SMEs to a national economy from exporting is generally small; for example, in Japan SMEs accounted for only 13 per cent of merchandise exports in 1990.

Ethics and Hidden Greed - Your Defense Against Unethical Strategies and Violations of Trust (Paperback): Rob Docters, Hans... Ethics and Hidden Greed - Your Defense Against Unethical Strategies and Violations of Trust (Paperback)
Rob Docters, Hans Gieskes
R674 Discovery Miles 6 740 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Trust. Loyalty. Friendship. These were once the building blocks of good business relationships. Today, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know whom to trust. How do we protect ourselves and our business interests from the unethical behaviours of others? Why doesn’t intuition serve as the best guide for detecting unethical strategies? Concern about falling victim to the tactics of unethical strategies is widespread. The authors connect time-honoured ethical principles to real-world cases and offer the building blocks and counter-strategies you need to fight greed: Knowing the five strategies of greed, and learning how to recognize them. Learning how trust really works, and being able to develop the skill of trusting with discernment. Applying, and being able to communicate, concrete, ethical rules. Ethics and Hidden Greed will reassure readers that while unethical strategies may have increased in sophistication and grown harder to detect in recent years, there are still only five categories of these behaviours. The authors will demonstrate how to recognize the patterns employed by greedy players and provide tactics for combatting all of them.

Shekina Rochat
R1,258 Discovery Miles 12 580 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Mapping Career Counseling Interventions provides an innovative insight into identifying and resolving problems within career management. In recent years, myriad of counselling tools has been developed so that practitioners can offer the most appropriate support possible. To guide the selection of such tools, this book offers a "map" that introduces and links 63 frequent career management difficulties with more than 160 qualitative interventions and solutions. Through its highly organized layout and extensive detail, major career management difficulties-namely lack of motivation, indecisiveness, dysfunctional beliefs, lack of information, conflicts, and lack of employability-are scrutinized and divided into specific, more manageable sub-difficulties. Targeted interventions to address each of those difficulties, originating from vocational, motivational, and positive psychology, are then suggested and described. From these conclusions, the book delivers practical advice to help conduct these interventions in a sensitive and respectful manner. Overall, this book outlines the most effective ways to foster a good working alliance. One of the book's standout features is its inclusion of an inventory and card sort to facilitate the identification of obstacles to professional choice and career management. This book is a pivotal resource for the large and diverse community of career development practitioners, such as career counsellors, career advisors, employment counsellors, and career coaches, regardless of their specific audience and work settings.

Status and Organizations - Theories and Cases (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Alexander Styhre Status and Organizations - Theories and Cases (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Alexander Styhre
R3,010 Discovery Miles 30 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines social status as a social mechanism and a social fact that strongly shapes how markets and organizations are regulated, managed, and preserved over time. The first part of this book identifies a number of organizational issues and managerial concerns that can be framed as being a matter of the cognitive perspectives of social actors, and better explained on the basis of such conditions. The second part demonstrates the analytical value of the concept of status in a variety of organizational settings and market contexts. In the three empirical settings, status does play a key role when resources such as legitimacy (in urban development projects), revenues from sales (in video game marketing), and access to venture capital (in life science companies) are distributed. This book summarizes and reviews the academic literature on status and organization studies, as well as providing valuable information for researchers conducting empirical testing. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of Organizations and Social Systems.

Administrative Philosophy - Values and Motivations in Administrative Life (Hardcover, Revised edition): Christopher Hodgkinson Administrative Philosophy - Values and Motivations in Administrative Life (Hardcover, Revised edition)
Christopher Hodgkinson
R3,045 Discovery Miles 30 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a bridge between the technical literature of administrative theory and philosophical discourse. It is needed because an adequate axiology (value theory) of administration is ignored by the former and lacking in the latter. That value theory is necessary to leadership and administration follows directly from decision making and policy formulation, and indirectly from post-modern conditions and context. Moreover, leadership requires self knowledge and motivational insight. The knowledge of good and evil as a critical component of administrative thought ought not to be denied by any technocratic asepsis.

Central themes include organization and administrative theory, decisions and policy making, hierarchy, leadership, power, values, interests. Particular attention is paid to pathologies, ideologies, and the problems of praxis. A robust value theory is presented together with its implications both for the common interest and for personal value auditing. A unique feature of the book is its concurrent presentation in aphoristic form of a general propositional logic of administration.

The work is the consolidation of a quarter century of research, teaching, and publication in the subject field. Drawing upon this body of knowledge the author reconstructs a definitive text along with the extensive new material, notably in the areas of polemic management, ideology, value auditing, and leadership critique.

The Integrator - A Change Management Framework for Achieving Agile IT Project Success (Paperback): Scott Coplan The Integrator - A Change Management Framework for Achieving Agile IT Project Success (Paperback)
Scott Coplan
R1,402 Discovery Miles 14 020 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

When a $145 million IT project failure pushes Los Angeles to the edge of financial meltdown, the County CEO asks Max McLellan, a harried IT project manager, aka The Integrator, for help. The County Board gives Max 30 days to identify the problem and find a solution. At first Max finds the usual missteps, but something bigger and darker beckons, an explosive source of project failure. He must do something different, rattling ghosts of previous County IT failures, uncloaking crookedness, and exposing truths that shatter careers. With some people rooting for his failure, Max battles to fit all the pieces together with the County team, applying his proven framework to define the problem, plan a solution and execute it successfully. It's common knowledge that barely 50% of IT projects succeed, per a 2017 Project Management Institute report. Equally well-known, approximately 70% of large-scale change management initiatives fail according to a 2017 McKinsey & Co. report. Given the challenge to overcome these low success rates, The Integrator offers a proven narrative on the organizational change framework for achieving Agile IT project management success based on the author's 45+ year client experiences and published research. The Integrator defines change management as the single overarching methodology integrating Agile IT and project management. It does this because all projects are about change - significant organizational and personal change. The people involved - their participation in and understanding and support of these changes - ultimately determine IT projects success or failure. In fact, while all IT projects are about change, successful projects change human behavior. The methodologies included in the framework, described in The Integrator, include: * Change management as defined by AIM (Accelerating Implementation Methodology). * Project management as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI) Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) standard. * IT management as derived from the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) standard. * Agile as defined by the Agile Alliance's Agile Manifesto. Written by a certified Project Management Professional and accredited change management practitioner, The Integrator chronicles the challenges involved in applying this framework in a real-world setting to achieve successful project implementation.

Norbert Majerus, George Taninecz
R1,455 Discovery Miles 14 550 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Davanti Nella Gara, an Italian bicycle company, makes the best racing bikes in the world. But after decades of market dominance, competitors have brought the industry leader back to the Peloton. The company's second-generation owner longs for retirement, but a tired product lineup is pushing down profits and the firm's market value will never support his ride into the sunset. The flawed but beloved owner seeks out the counsel of an old friend and successful businessman, who steers him toward a fast and remarkable transformation, one fueled by a relentless focus on innovation excellence. An engaging business novel, Winning Innovation dives into the art and science of innovation; the thrills of the European bike-racing circuit; the vibrant landscape and cuisine of Italy; and a cast of intriguing characters who work to put Davanti on the road to sustained prosperity. The company's leader isn't afraid to learn and apply new ideas to reenergize his company, and finds he cares more about his employees than he could ever imagine. A young innovator struggles to see a product idea to fruition as well as rise into management - and he falls in love along the way. A newly promoted R&D director brings teamwork and transparency to product development and aligns the entire company around innovation. With the help of a seasoned and persistent change agent, in just a year, Davanti deploys a well-defined and -sequenced transformation - a complete and seamless process that can be replicated and scaled by most companies. The leader engages associates in pursuit of the right vision and strategy, candidly supporting them all as they unleash their creative sparks, work through personality conflicts, and take on real-world challenges faced by companies every day. They learn and apply traditional R&D principles in new ways (e.g., cost of delay, sprints, fail fast, late start) and successfully leverage emerging innovation and change-management principles (e.g., idea-creation events, knowledge management, workplace humility, visual management, lean project management). And an aligned, three-phase innovation process - from idea creation to technology development and product design - provides the innovation infrastructure the company needs for revenue creation and success beyond racing bikes. From a top-heavy organization dominated by power struggles and finger-pointing emerges a new Davanti Nella Gara - a flattened, innovative company with: Clear vision and endorsed goals and strategy Speed, responsiveness, and agility Widespread, successful creativity Collaboration and teamwork Superior risk management Respect for people Unquestionable ethics Changed leadership and associate behaviors Project management excellence Rapid problem-solving and experimentation Not just the story of an R&D transformation, Winning Innovation illustrates a companywide transformation of a magnitude that only superior R&D can make possible. It may well be the first book to chronologically introduce the principles for a complete innovation excellence transformation along with the parallel people transformation that is necessary for real change to occur. The end result for Davanti Nella Gara is a dominant new culture based on respect and humility, highly efficient processes that will deliver a wealth of innovations, sales, and profits for many years to come, and an owner who leaves a bright future for the people and company he's known and loved his entire life.

Diversity and Organizational Development - Impacts and Opportunities (Hardcover): Jennifer Kuklenski Diversity and Organizational Development - Impacts and Opportunities (Hardcover)
Jennifer Kuklenski
R2,825 Discovery Miles 28 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As modern societies become more diverse and multicultural, the call for greater inclusion within organizations is getting louder. In response, many organizations have rushed to diversify, without fully understanding the implicit and explicit levels of diversity, the complexity of social identities, and the hidden and often unintended ways differences between members of in-groups and out-groups can lead to social exclusion. By providing a thorough overview of the concept of diversity, distinguishing between competing definitions and types of cultural and cognitive differences, Diversity and Organizational Development helps current and future leaders develop their diversity competency. Concepts of diversity management are explained as value-added activities that increase creativity and innovation, improve problem-solving and organizational flexibility, and aid in the recruitment and retention of top talent. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives from business, economics, psychology, and sociology, this work offers a comprehensive approach to inclusive organizational development through which diversity and inclusion initiatives are supported by all facets of organizational operations and culture. Readers are shown how organizations can move toward the integrating stage of organizational development, during which members of all cultural and identity groups feel included, valued, and empowered through their contributions to organizational success. Making a case for inclusive development through organizational culture, this book further demonstrates how rituals, symbols, and language can create shared meaning among members of diverse organizations, powerfully influencing their effectiveness and strategic performance, while ultimately creating more satisfying workplaces.

History in Management and Organization Studies - From Margin to Mainstream (Paperback): Behlul UEsdiken, Matthias Kipping History in Management and Organization Studies - From Margin to Mainstream (Paperback)
Behlul UEsdiken, Matthias Kipping
R1,389 Discovery Miles 13 890 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

There has, in recent times, been an increasing interest in history, broadly defined, among management scholars. But what specifically a historical approach or perspective can contribute to research on organizational fields, organizations, strategy etc. and how exactly such historical research should be carried out remain questions that have been answered only partially, if at all. Building on the authors' prior and ongoing work, History in Management and Organization Studies: From Margins to Mainstream is unique in presenting a comprehensive and integrated view of how history has informed management research with a focus on organization theory and strategy. More specifically, the volume provides an overview of how the relationship been history and management scholarship has evolved from the 19th century until today, focusing mainly on the post-World War II period; and systematically surveys the kind of research programs within organization theory and strategy that have used historical data and/or history as a theoretical construct, while also identifying the remaining "blind spots". As a whole, it offers a kind of roadmap for management scholars and historians to situate their research and, hopefully, find new roads for others to travel. The book is intended for anybody conducting or planning to conduct historical research within management and organization studies, and aims, in particular, at becoming a standard feature of research methods courses in business schools and departments of management.

Temporary Organizations - Prevalence, Logic and Effectiveness (Hardcover): Patrick Kenis, Martyna Janowicz-Panjaitan, Bart... Temporary Organizations - Prevalence, Logic and Effectiveness (Hardcover)
Patrick Kenis, Martyna Janowicz-Panjaitan, Bart Cambre
R3,733 Discovery Miles 37 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important and timely book provides a systematic treatment of temporary organizations - an increasingly prevalent organizational form in which organizations work together on a joint task - for example, a movie production, a rescue operation, development of a new product - for an ex ante limited period of time. Demonstrating that temporary organizations are increasingly common, the book provides insights on how they differ from the classical organization and contributes to our understanding of what makes temporary organizations effective. Contributions by reputed organization scholars focus on the impact that this limited duration has on the way that temporary organizations structure their activities, organize work, use resources and achieve outcomes. Moreover, the tenability of various organizational concepts and theories for temporary contexts is examined and some unique phenomena inherent to temporariness are explored. Researchers interested in organizational design and project management scholars will warmly welcome this book, as will graduate students in organization studies, management studies, public policy studies, leisure studies, public administration and students of project management.

Politics and the Corporation (Hardcover): Harland Prechel Politics and the Corporation (Hardcover)
Harland Prechel
R3,824 Discovery Miles 38 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume focuses on the ways in which corporations exercise political power, and how changes in the political-legal arrangements in which corporations are embedded affect their organizational behavior. Drawing from a range of theoretical perspectives, the articles in this collection further our understanding of political capitalism, the utilization of political outlets to attain conditions of stability, predictability, and security in the economy and to preserve the social relations in capitalist society. Corporations exercise political and economic power to establish public policies that facilitate rationalization of the economy: creating the political, economic and ideological conditions that are intended to advance their capital accumulation agendas. By examining the historical and dialectical relationship between the corporation and the state, the authors identify conditions within which capitalists mobilize politically to define and redefine the institutional arrangement in which they are embedded. However, the capitalist class and corporate management do not always have a coherent conception of the relationships between their economic goals and the means necessary to achieve those goals. Thus, in addition to the intended consequences of corporate political mobilization, these articles show that rationalization is a historical process that is characterized by contradictions and unintended consequences.
