Gesture, Segment, Prosody (Hardcover, New): Gerard J. Docherty, D. Robert Ladd Gesture, Segment, Prosody (Hardcover, New)
Gerard J. Docherty, D. Robert Ladd
R4,945 Discovery Miles 49 450 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Laboratory phonology uses speech data to research questions about the abstract categorical structures of phonology. This collection of papers broadly addresses three such questions: What structures underlie the temporal coordination of articulatory gestures? What is the proper role of segments and features in phonological description? and What structures--hierarchical or otherwise--relate morphosyntax to prosody? In order to encourage the interdisciplinary understanding required for progress in this field, each of the three groups of papers is preceded by a tutorial paper (commissioned for this volume) on theories and findings presupposed by some or all of the papers in the group. In addition, most of the papers are followed by commentaries, written by noted researchers in phonetics and phonology, which serve to bring important theoretical and methodological issues into perspective. Most of the material collected here is based on papers presented at the Second Conference on Laboratory Phonology in Edinburgh, 1989. The volume is a sequel to Kingston and Beckman (eds.): Papers in Laboratory Phonology I also published by Cambridge University Press.

Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology - Linguistic Constraints and Social Barriers (Paperback): Jette G. Hansen Edwards Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology - Linguistic Constraints and Social Barriers (Paperback)
Jette G. Hansen Edwards
R1,560 Discovery Miles 15 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this pioneering study of the phonological development of a family of L2 English learners, Jette Hansen analyses data from actual language learners to examine the developmental processes involved in acquiring a nonnative sound system. This is a pioneering study of the phonological development of a family of L2 English learners. It is the first full-length book that focuses on a tightly-knit group of learners' acquisition of phonology over a longitudinal timeframe, and the first book to study both social and linguistic factors across that time period. Jette G. Hansen analyses this data gathered from actual language learners in the light of recent theory, as well as challenging aspects of current thinking on the subject of second language acquisition. Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology therefore makes an important and original contribution to the field and provides an in-depth analysis and discussion of the developmental processes in acquiring a non-native sound system, presented here for the first time. The book is aimed at academics interested in second language acquisition, and researchers studying phonology in general.

Phonology - A cognitive grammar introduction (Paperback): Geoffrey S Nathan Phonology - A cognitive grammar introduction (Paperback)
Geoffrey S Nathan
R726 Discovery Miles 7 260 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This textbook introduces the reader to the field of phonology, from allophones to faithfulness and exemplars. It assumes no prior knowledge of the field, and includes a brief review chapter on phonetics. It is written within the framework of Cognitive Linguistics, but covers a wide range of historical and contemporary theories, from the Prague School to Optimality Theory. While many examples are based on American and British English, there are also discussions of some aspects of French and German colloquial speech and phonological analysis problems from many other languages around the world. In addition to the basics of phoneme theory, features, and morphophonemics there are chapters on casual speech, first and second language acquisition and historical change. A final chapter covers a number of issues in contemporary phonological theory, including some of the classic debates in Generative Phonology (rule ordering, abstractness, derivationalism ) and proposals for usage-based phonologies.

John Kingston, Mary E. Beckman
R5,122 Discovery Miles 51 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection of papers presents current research in speech science. The unifying theme of the collection is the relationship between phonological representations of the grammatical structure of speech, and physical models of the production and perception of actual utterances. The authors, including leading specialists from the fields of phonology, electrical engineering, linguistic phonetics and psychology, provide a wide range of views on this question. There are papers dealing with the relationship between phonology and phonetics as it applies to tone in Hausa, to intonation, stress and phrasing in English and German, to universals of patterning in sonority and syllable structure, and in consonant place assimilation, to speech synthesis tools for testing phonological and phonetic theories, and to three different models of articulatory structure. An introductory chapter by the editors outlines the aim of the volume and provides a short overview of the papers. The book is aimed at specialists in all areas of speech science.

The Oxford Guide to the Transeurasian Languages (Hardcover): Martine Robbeets, Alexander Savelyev The Oxford Guide to the Transeurasian Languages (Hardcover)
Martine Robbeets, Alexander Savelyev
R6,638 Discovery Miles 66 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Oxford Guide to the Transeurasian Languages provides a comprehensive account of the Transeurasian languages, and is the first major reference work in the field since 1965. The term 'Transeurasian' refers to a large group of geographically adjacent languages that includes five uncontroversial linguistic families: Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic, and Turkic. The historical connection between these languages, however, constitutes one of the most debated issues in historical comparative linguistics. In the present book, a team of leading international scholars in the field take a balanced approach to this controversy, integrating different theoretical frameworks, combining both functional and formal linguistics, and showing that genealogical and areal approaches are in fact compatible with one another. The volume is divided into five parts. Part I deals with the historical sources and periodization of the Transeurasian languages and their classification and typology. In Part II, chapters provide individual structural overviews of the Transeurasian languages and the linguistic subgroups that they belong to, while Part III explores Transeurasian phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis, and semantics from a comparative perspective. Part IV offers a range of areal and genealogical explanations for the correlations observed in the preceding parts. Finally, Part V combines archaeological, genetic, and anthropological perspectives on the identity of speakers of Transeurasian languages. The Oxford Guide to the Transeurasian Languages will be an indispensable resource for specialists in Japonic, Koreanic, Tungusic, Mongolic, and Turkic languages and for anyone with an interest in Transeurasian and comparative linguistics more broadly.

Word Prominence in Languages with Complex Morphologies (Hardcover): Ksenia Bogomolets, Harry van der Hulst Word Prominence in Languages with Complex Morphologies (Hardcover)
Ksenia Bogomolets, Harry van der Hulst
R4,525 Discovery Miles 45 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume focuses on the theoretical and analytical challenges that languages with complex morphologies pose for the theory and typology of word-level prosodic phenomena. The morphological complexity and phonological length that are characteristic of words in these languages make them a particularly fruitful ground for investigating the effects of both phonological and morphological factors in the assignment of prominence. The first three chapters in the volume explore general theoretical issues pertaining to word prominence in synthetic languages, including the issue of 'wordhood' and the empirical, theoretical, and methodological issues with delineating word-level prominence and the higher-level prosodic phenomena in these languages. These are followed by a series of case studies on stress, accent, and tone in a geographically and genetically diverse set of languages with highly synthetic morphologies including languages of the Americas, Europe and Asia, and Australia. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, combining phonetic, phonological, and morphosyntactic insights. It will be of interest not only to phonologists and morphologists, but to all those interested in the typological and theoretical issues relating to polysynthetic languages.

Ikpana Interrogatives (Hardcover): Jason Kandybowicz, Bertille Baron, Philip T Duncan, Hironori Katsuda Ikpana Interrogatives (Hardcover)
Jason Kandybowicz, Bertille Baron, Philip T Duncan, Hironori Katsuda
R2,611 Discovery Miles 26 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book documents the interrogative system of Ikpana, an endangered indigenous Ghana-Togo Mountain language of eastern Ghana also known as Logba. The system is notable in several respects. It exhibits features that buck certain typological trends, act as counterexamples to some claims about language universals, and exemplify fascinating patterns that are either rare or unfamiliar in interrogative systems cross-linguistically. Drawing on original fieldwork and a combination of formal/theoretical, experimental, and comparative methodologies, the book provides a theoretically-informed description and analysis of Ikpana interrogative grammar, encompassing both syntactic and phonological aspects of question formation in the language. The chapters explore a range of phenomena including polar question formation, wh- movement, wh- in-situ, interrogative intonation, and prosody, among others. The authors demonstrate that theoretically-guided language documentation does not only contribute to language description, but can also increase understanding of the human Language Faculty and expand the empirical base of language typologies: bringing formal and theoretical concerns to the fore facilitates richer descriptions of the grammar than purely descriptive approaches allow.

Metrical Phonology - A Course Book (Paperback): Richard Hogg, C.B. McCully Metrical Phonology - A Course Book (Paperback)
Richard Hogg, C.B. McCully
R1,571 Discovery Miles 15 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is an introduction to the theory of metrical phonology, one of the most exciting developments in linguistic theory in the last decade. Metrical phonology has revolutionised our ideas and knowledge of such phenomena as stress patterning, and contributed to a better understanding of quite basic phonological issues. Up to now the material which has been published in this field has taken the form of scholarly articles and dissertations: the aim of this book is to provide a simple and accessible introduction to the topic. It concentrates on stress and rhythmical phenomena in English - as the most profitable introduction to the theory - and discusses fully the comparative merits of different approaches; but the authors leave the reader to determine for himself the most appropriate solution, having presented a wide range of evidence and alternative analyses. There are frequent exercises to encourage the student to practise the analytical techniques and understand developments in the theory. Each chapter ends with a list of topics for discussion, and a section on further reading.

Your Voice Speaks Volumes - It's Not What You Say, But How You Say It (Paperback): Jane Setter Your Voice Speaks Volumes - It's Not What You Say, But How You Say It (Paperback)
Jane Setter
R452 R409 Discovery Miles 4 090 Save R43 (10%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Why do we speak the way we do, and what do our voices tell others about us? What is the truth behind the myths that surround how we speak? Jane Setter explores these and other fascinating questions in this engaging introduction to the power and the science of the voice. The book first takes us on a tour of the sounds in our language and how we produce them, as well as how and why those sounds vary in different varieties of English. The origins of our vast range of accents are explained, along with the prejudices associated with them: why do we feel such loyalty to our own accent, and what's behind our attitudes to others? We learn that much of what we believe about how we speak may not be true: is it really the case, for instance, that only young people use 'uptalk', or that only women use vocal fry? Our voices can also be used as criminal evidence, and to help us wear different social and professional hats. Throughout the book, Professor Setter draws on examples from the media and from her own professional and personal experience, from her work on the provenance of the terrorist 'Jihadi John' to why the Rolling Stones sounded American.

Eberhard Stock, Eva-Maria Krech; Eberhard Stock, Ludmila Velickova
R1,831 Discovery Miles 18 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Derivational Timing of Ellipsis (Paperback): Guliz Gunes, Aniko Liptak The Derivational Timing of Ellipsis (Paperback)
Guliz Gunes, Aniko Liptak
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume explores the nature of ellipsis, the core phenomenon that results in various types of omission in sentences. The chapters adopt the popular 'silent structure' accounts of ellipsis, and investigate the question of when linguistic material becomes silenced during the derivation and realization of syntactic structure. The book begins with a detailed introduction from the editors that outlines the current generative syntactic approaches to the derivational timing of ellipsis. In the chapters that follow, internationally-recognized experts in the field address key topics including structure building, the architecture of grammar, the interaction of distinct modules with syntax, the order of operations in the post-syntactic component, and constraints on binding relations. The authors also present novel arguments for and against the derivational approaches to ellipsis, the licensing of ellipsis, and phonological constraints on elliptical sentences. The findings, based on data from English and other languages such as Armenian, Italo-Romance, Ossetic, Spanish, Taiwanese, and Turkish, facilitate a deeper understanding of the interaction between syntax and the neighbouring modules in the formation of elliptical utterances.

The Oxford History of Phonology (Hardcover): B. Elan Dresher, Harry van der Hulst The Oxford History of Phonology (Hardcover)
B. Elan Dresher, Harry van der Hulst
R5,185 Discovery Miles 51 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is the first to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive history of phonology from the earliest known examples of phonological thinking, through the rise of phonology as a field in the twentieth century, and up to the most recent advances. The volume is divided into five parts. Part I offers an account of writing systems along with chapters exploring the great ancient and medieval intellectual traditions of phonological thought that form the foundation of later thinking and continue to enrich phonological theory. Chapters in Part II describe the important schools and individuals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who shaped phonology as an organized scientific field. Part III examines mid-twentieth century developments in phonology in the Soviet Union, Northern and Western Europe, and North America; it continues with precursors to generative grammar, and culminates in a chapter on Chomsky and Halle's The Sound Pattern of English (SPE). Part IV then shows how phonological theorists responded to SPE with respect to derivations, representations, and phonology-morphology interaction. Theories discussed include Dependency Phonology, Government Phonology, Constraint-and-Repair theories, and Optimality Theory. The part ends with a chapter on the study of variation. Finally, chapters in Part V look at new methods and approaches, covering phonetic explanation, corpora and phonological analysis, probabilistic phonology, computational modelling, models of phonological learning, and the evolution of phonology. This in-depth exploration of the history of phonology provides new perspectives on where phonology has been and sheds light on where it could go next.

The Language of Humor - An Introduction (Paperback): Don L.F. Nilsen, Alleen Pace Nilsen The Language of Humor - An Introduction (Paperback)
Don L.F. Nilsen, Alleen Pace Nilsen
R1,061 Discovery Miles 10 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Much of today's communication is carried out through various kinds of humor, and we therefore need to be able to understand its many aspects. Here, two of the world's leading pioneers in humor studies, Alleen and Don Nilsen, explore how humor can be explained across the numerous sub-disciplines of linguistics. Drawing on examples from language play and jokes in a range of real-life contexts, such as art, business, marketing, comedy, creative writing, science, journalism and politics, the authors use their own theory of 'Features, functions and subjects of Humor' to analyze humor across all disciplines. Each highly accessible chapter uses a rich array of examples to stimulate discussion and interaction even in large classes. Supplemental PowerPoints to accompany each of the 25 chapters are available online, taking many of the insights from the chapters for further interactional discussions with students.

The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics (Paperback): Shigeru Miyagawa, Mamoru Saito The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics (Paperback)
Shigeru Miyagawa, Mamoru Saito
R1,934 Discovery Miles 19 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the past twenty years or so, the work on Japanese within generative grammar has shifted from primarily using contemporary theory to describe Japanese to contributing directly to general theory, on top of producing extensive analyses of the language. The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics captures the excitement that comes from answering the question, "What can Japanese say about Universal Grammar?" Each of the eighteen chapters takes up a topic in syntax, morphology, acquisition, processing, phonology, or information structure, and, first of all, lays out the core data, followed by critical discussion of the various approaches found in the literature. Each chapter ends with a section on how the study of the particular phenomenon in Japanese contributes to our knowledge of general linguistic theory. This book will be useful to students and scholars of linguistics who are interested in the latest studies on one of the most extensively studied languages within generative grammar.

The 5th Edition is updated with current census data, new material on key concepts in phonetic transcription, and a new section on the application of speech acoustics in clinical practice. Pedagogical aids - including new chapter summaries, learning objectives, exercises, and artwork - help students learn, process, and practice the material.

Spelling and Society - The Culture and Politics of Orthography around the World (Paperback): Mark Sebba Spelling and Society - The Culture and Politics of Orthography around the World (Paperback)
Mark Sebba
R1,310 Discovery Miles 13 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Spelling matters to people. In America and Britain every day, members of the public write to the media on spelling issues, and take part in spelling contests. In Germany, a reform of the spelling system has provoked a constitutional crisis; in Galicia, a 'war of orthographies' parallels an intense public debate on national identity; on walls, bridges and trains globally, PUNX and ANARKISTS proclaim their identities orthographically. The way we spell often represents an attempt to associate with, or dissociate from, other languages. In Spelling and Society, Mark Sebba explores why matters of orthography are of real concern to so many groups, as a reflection of culture, history and social practices, and as a powerful symbol of national or local identity. This 2007 book will be welcomed by students and researchers in English language, orthography and sociolinguistics, and by anyone interested in the importance of spelling in contemporary society.
