It outlines the use of modular approaches for the processes used to improve energy conservation and efficiency, which are preludes to the prudent use of energy. Since energy consumption is conventionally broken down into four sectors-residential, transportation, industrial, and commercial-the discussions on energy usage management are also broken down into these four sectors in the book. The book examines the use of modular systems for five application areas that cover the sectors described above: buildings, vehicles, computers and electrical/electronic products, district heating, and wastewater treatment and desalination. This book also discusses the use of a modular approach for energy storage and transportation. Finally, it describes how the modular approach facilitates bottom-up, top-down, and hybrid simulation and modeling of the energy systems from various scientific and socioeconomic perspectives. Aimed at industry professionals and researchers involved in the energy industry, this book illustrates in detail, with the help of concrete industrial examples, how a modular approach can facilitate management of energy usage.
DC electric power distribution systems have higher efficiency, better current carrying capacity and faster response when compared to conventional AC systems. They also provide a more natural interface with many types of renewable energy sources. Furthermore, there are fewer issues with reactive power flow, power quality and frequency regulation, resulting in a notably less complex control system. All these facts lead to increased applications of DC systems in modern power systems. Still, design and operation of these systems imposes a number of specific challenges, mostly related to lack of mature protection technology and operational experience, as well as very early development stage of standards regarding DC based power infrastructure. This book provides an up-to-date overview of recent research activities in the control, protection and architectural design of a number of different types of DC distribution systems and microgrids. Practical requirements and implementation details of several types of DC distribution systems used in the real world industrial applications are also presented. Several types of coordinated control design concepts are shown, with concepts of stabilization being explained in detail. The book reviews the shortcomings and future developments concerning the practical DC system integration issues.
As the case for Climate Change mitigation becomes ever more pressing, hydrogen has the potential to play a major role in a low-carbon energy future. Hydrogen can drive the vehicles of tomorrow and also heat homes and supply energy to businesses. Much recent discussion in energy policy circles has considered ways in which greatly expanded electrification can meet the demand for low-carbon mobility and heating. Such narratives centre on the widespread use of renewable energy sources with occasionally surplus renewable electricity being used to produce hydrogen, for example by electrolysis. This book considers a more evolutionary path involving the continued extraction and use of fossil fuels, most notably natural gas, but in ways that greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this way much established industrial capacity and know how might be transitioned to help deliver the low carbon future that the world so desperately requires. It has been predicted that by 2030 the world's population will be about 1.6 times that of 2004. The energy consumption will increase by 60% by 2030. This book discusses the Wind turbine generation and photovoltaic power generation which are expected to increase ten-fold by 2030, but their combined percentage of the generation will only total 7%. The expectation for nuclear power generation is large, but under present conditions, the amount of natural uranium resources will have a share for only 80 years. Development of the fast breeder reactor is being pushed forward, but it is not expected to be commercial before about 2050. Therefore, it will continue to be necessary to depend on fossil fuel. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) techniques for thermal power plants will also surely become important.
Trans-European networks (TENs) are a key theme in the process of integration for the EU as it enters the next millennium. The attainment of these networks stretches across many different areas of European policy and economy. The development of TENs is about establishing a series of infrastructure networks that complement the broad changes in the European economy facilitated by the development of the Single European Market. The book examines the development of TENs in the three key sectors: transport, energy and telecommunications, noting key themes and issues that need to be faced in their attainment. Attention is also paid to common problems in their realisation most notably the financing problems. The EU's strategy to develop these networks is essentially market-led yet, as the financing issues indicate, a consensus between the states in allowing commercial investment in infrastructure is proving elusive.
