This title presents the radiological manifestations of the genetic skeletal dysplasias in the form of Gamut Lists. Its purpose is to act as an aid to differential diagnosis following the observation of abnormalities in bone radiographs. The first section of the book comprises gamut lists of generalised skeletal abnormalities. The second section takes a regional approach and in the third section, brief outlines and key references are provided for the heritable skeletal disorders listed in Sections 1 and 2. At appropriate places in the text pertinent comment is made concerning practical issues in radio-diagnosis of these conditions. An extensive index is provided. This new edition of the book has been extensively updated and expanded and provides the user with an accurate and effective diagnostic tool.

Pediatric and Adolescent Urologic Imaging provides a comprehensive reference for health care providers of children and adolescents with urologic conditions. This is the first book in which each chapter is written collaboratively by at least one author from each specialty. This unique approach melds the expertise of each specialist and offers it to the reader in a manner aimed at reinforcing the integration of clinical information to radiologic imaging. The book is arranged into two sections allowing for easy access to the information. The first section covers the principles of each radiologic modality as well as radiation safety and the history of uroradiology. The second section integrates the lessons of the first section into specific urologic conditions arranged anatomically and includes additional unique conditions. Pediatric and Adolescent Urologic Imaging is a key reference for pediatric urologists and radiologists as well as primary care providers, general urologists and radiologists, fellows, residents, medical students, and mid-level providers.
Modern therapeutic strategies in the last decade have radically changed the approach to the oncologic patient with metastatic disease. Not infrequently today metastases are managed more aggressively and addressed in a multidisciplinary way with extremely encouraging results in terms of both survival and disease control. There have been equally revolutionary changes in diagnostic imaging, with renewed attention to early diagnosis of both local and distant recurrence, in order to prompt timely radical intervention. The distribution of metastases is affected by characteristics of the primary improved survival of neoplastic patients and the routine imaging follow-up have resulted in greatly increased detection of metastatic malignancies with less than typical appearance and behaviour.
The 22nd May, 1999 Post Graduate Course of the ESPR concentrates on important, modern issues in Pediatric Imaging that are not frequently discussed at international conferences. World leading pediatric radiologists focus on the radiological expression of patho-physiological processes such as post-surgical abdomen, right lower quadrant and pelvis in puberty aged females, follow-up of brain tumor therapy, new-born chest - surfactant and ECMO, follow-up treatment of bone neoplasia, and many more.
This syllabus provides a wide overview of the latest developments in diagnostic work and intervention in diseases of the abdomen and pelvis. In addition to conventional diagnostic radiology, special procedures such as US, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and interventional techniques are discussed.
This book provides information on all aspects of the Internet of interest to radiologists. It also provides non-experts with all the information necessary to profit from the Internet and to explore the different possibilities offered by the www. Its use should be recommended to all radiologists who use the Internet.
For all that new non-X-ray technologies such as MR and ultrasound and its various manifestations have made an enormous impact in recent years on the practice of medical imaging, the use of X-rays and X-ray contrast-enhancing agents has retained an important position at the heart of the process. Indeed, with its frequent requirements for high total dose regimes, CT has increased the use of contrast agents. Even helical/spiral CT which, it was initially argued, should reduce contrast as well as radiation loads, may actually require just as much or more of both because of the potential it offers for multi-phase scanning. Iodinated intravascular X-ray contrast agents, especially the more recently developed non-ionic agents, continue therefore to play a pivotal role in clinical imaging. These succinct and authoritative articles, originally appearing in the journal Advances in X-ray Contrast, range sufficiently widely for their compilation in this volume to be considered a mini-textbook on the water-soluble iodinated X-ray contrast agents and their applications. Each is written by an acknowledged and experienced expert in the field. They usefully cover the developmental history of the agents; defined risk factors, approaches to prophylaxis and, ultimately, of the treatment of adverse reactions; the interesting subject of supposed delayed reactions to contrast agents; the important organ-specific toxicities, cardiac toxicity, neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity and high-dose toxicity as encountered in complex procedures; the sometimes special circumstances and occasional extreme conditions to which contrast agents may be exposed in Interventional Radiology; the special, in several ways, case of paediatric radiology; the controversial subject of thromboembolic phenomena in clinical angiography; and the precise role of contrast agents. As regards the practicalities of contrast administration regimes and imaging protocols it is really only in the area of CT that there is debate and controversy, and articles are included which cover CT of the liver, spleen and pancreas, and protocols for the new spiral/helical technology and even for the much less widely available electron-beam CT technology visualization. Pulmonary embolus diagnosis and protocols for contrast administration with this technology are also discussed.
In his original essay on the shaking palsy (1817) James Parkinson remarked that the "senses and intellect were uninjured." Thus, it was only in later years that the complexity ofparkinsonism and in particular Parkinson's disease with dementia was recognised. Cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease is common and is estimated to affect more than forty per cent of patients with disease onset after age 65. Recent studies suggest that pathology of Parkin son's disease now ranks second to Alzheimer's disease as the commonest sub strate of dementia in elderly patients. The condition is heterogeneous and there remain many complicated and unresolved questions concerning cause, diagnosis and classification. In an attempt to clarify these issues, scientists and members of the European Brain Bank Network (EBBN) gathered in London for a meeting entitled "Dementia in Parkinsonism." The resultant monograph is testimony to the wide-ranging clinical, morphological and biochemical aspects of this condition. We are grateful to all contributors for expressing their expert opinions and for being so generous with their time taken in prepa ration of the manuscripts. The meeting was funded by the Commission of the European Communities as part of a Biomed-l Programme. We wish to thank Amgen Limited, Lilly Industries Limited and Roche Products Limited for additional sponsorship. The expert secretarial assistance of R. Nani in the pre paration of this book has been very much appreciated. London, November 1997 S. E. Daniel F. F. Cruz-Sanchez A. J. This volume brings together the papers which 33 radiologists, chosen among the leading European experts, presented at the Halley Project 1996 Refresher Course. The project, which I promoted and co-ordinated, started out under the aegis of the European Association of Radiology in 1992 with the aim of fostering the advancement of Radiology in various countries of Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Rumania. Thanks to the expertise and enthusiasm of distinguished colleagues from various countries in Western Europe and to the generosity of two sponsors, Bracco International and Schering A.G., it was possible to set up, in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995. four Faculties of Experts in Uroradiology. Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, Chest Radiology and Skeletal Radiology. These four faculties then gave a refresher course on the four radiological subspecialities in the six nations mentioned above. The project was called Halley, after the famous comet, in a desire to express the idea of spreading Western radiological culture among Eastern radiologists who were visited in their own countries. In these 4 years. as project leader, I accompanied the four Faculties during their tour and was thus able to experience the various local situations, not only in radiological terms but also socially. thanks to the ever warm relationships among radiologists of different nationalities and of different ages who attended the courses.
State-of-the-art resource details effective breast MRI techniques for improved screening and diagnosis Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast has evolved into an important breast cancer screening tool and major advance in women's health. Breast MRI is currently the most sensitive detection technique for both non-invasive and invasive cancers and follow-up in women with a new breast cancer diagnosis. It is increasingly becoming the go-to imaging method for screening women at high and intermediate risk of breast cancer and those with dense breast tissue on mammography. Yet despite its reliability and growing use, many radiologists lack the expertise to accurately perform breast MR image interpretation. Breast MRI Interpretation: Text and Case Analysis for Screening and Diagnosis by Gillian M. Newstead reflects insights and expertise from one of the leading authorities on breast imaging. The book is a highly practical reference on evaluation and interpretation of breast MR imaging, with discussion of the modality as a screening and diagnostic tool. Topics include image acquisition and interpretation, clinical implementation, managing findings, and overcoming problems. Key Highlights About 3,000 illustrations from the University of Chicago including single selected images, side-by-side images at different time points and acquisition parameters, and 3-D images enhance understanding of breast imaging Discussion of advanced acquisition techniques and future potential applications including non-contrast imaging, quantitative dynamic imaging, and artificial intelligence using advanced computer analytic methods This remarkable resource streamlines the breast MRI process, enabling radiologists to incorporate this imaging modality into practice, conduct screening and diagnostic exams more efficaciously, and interpret findings accurately. This book includes complimentary access to a digital copy on https://medone.thieme.com.
This book contains a series of clinical cases that address and illustrate difficult problems in obstetric ultrasound. The approach is strongly didactic and will aid trainees in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics to appreciate potential pitfalls and recognize rare presentations. Each case sets out one page of text, then one of treatment algorithms, and then presents sample ultrasound scans. Learning objectives are given for each case, together with a short list of references and background reading.
Biliary tract complications are still the major cause of morbidity following orthotopic liver transplantation. This book deals systematically with the large variety of possible cholangiographic changes. The figures are the results of a review of cholangiograms from more than 280 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation. The etiology, clinical aspects, and treatment of these complications are reviewed on the basis of the authors' experience in radiology, endoscopy, and transplant surgery.

Level set methods are numerical techniques which offer remarkably powerful tools for understanding, analyzing, and computing interface motion in a host of settings. When used for medical imaging analysis and segmentation, the function assigns a label to each pixel or voxel and optimality is defined based on desired imaging properties. This often includes a detection step to extract specific objects via segmentation. This allows for the segmentation and analysis problem to be formulated and solved in a principled way based on well-established mathematical theories. Level set method is a great tool for modeling time varying medical images and enhancement of numerical computations.

Our society is entering its fourth decade of existence, as of the 30th Annual Meeting in London, and we felt that this event merited reflection - a look back into the past - so as to better appreciate where we come from and where our sub speciality stands today, also in order to understand our colleagues from the different areas in Europe. It is our hope that paediatric radiology in Europe will thereby be strengthened now that old barriers have fallen. At the second conjoint meeting of the ESPR and the SPR in Stockholm in 1991 a group of senior pediatric radiologists from all parts of Europe who felt that this occasion should be marked took the initiative to produce a book on the history of paediatric radiology focussing on the develop ments leading to the creation of the ESPR. We thank all the colleagues who participated in the initial meeting to plan this book in Stockholm in 1991 and again at the Budapest Meeting in 1992 and who subsequently prepared contributions for it. These are the authors of the respective chapters and with them we hope that our readers will appreciate this effort. Unfortunately, we were not able to cover every European country, in spite of our attempt to do so."

This monograph deals primarily with the kidneys, ureters, and urinary blad der. The kidneys are retroperitoneal structures that parallel the psoas muscle. The left kidney is usually slightly higher than the right and is slightly more medially located. The vertical axis of the kidneys, when compared with the midline, is about 20 Degrees. There is often considerable mobility of the kidneys as a result of respiration and body position. Several centimeters of excursion have been demonstrated on deep inspiration or in the upright position. During late embryological development, each kidney occupies the flank region, capped by the liver on the right side and the spleen on the left. Abnor malities of the liver and spleen can affect the position of the kidneys. Also, retroperitoneal masses may displace the kidney. A palpable abdominal mass which radiographically may appear to be an intraperitoneal structure can be accurately localized as a retroperitoneal tumor by observing displacement of the kidney, particularly if the kidney is pushed caudally and medially, superi orly and laterally, or medially. Anomalies of the kidneys include abnormal position, abnormal number, changes in shape, and alterations in the inner structure that may affect the renal parenchyma, the pelvocalyceal systems, or both.

Medical imaging progressed to a standard undreamt of not very many years ago. The advances are due to continuous development of radiological techniques and the introduction of magnetic resonance imaging. With the improved and new methods three-dimensional target volumes for radiation therapy can be defined with hitherto unknown precision. This leads to an improvement in irradiation techniques and, as a consequence, to a higher likelihood of tumor control and a lower risk of normal tissue complications. Besides the improvement in irradiation techniques the new imaging methods may enable great strides in tumor response monitoring, not only in the detection of morphological alterations but also by showing physiological changes in the tumor during and after treatment by means of MRI and PET. This not only leads to better prognostic information but may also allow early evaluation of the response to treatment. It may then be possible to individualize the radiation dose but also the alternative-treatment for non-responders. This is certainly a future direction for radiation oncology.
In the past two decades, significant advances in magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM) have been made possible by a combination of higher magnetic fields and more robust data acquisition technologies. This technical progress has enabled a shift in MRM applications from basic anatomical investigations to dynamic and functional studies, boosting the use of MRM in biological and life sciences. This book provides a simple introduction to MRM emphasizing practical aspects relevant to high magnetic fields. It focuses on biological applications and presents a number of selected examples of neuroscience applications. The text is mainly intended for those who are beginning research in the field of MRM or are planning to incorporate high-resolution MRI in their neuroscience studies. |
