Of the joints of the body commonly afflicted by serious pathology the knee is the most accessible. Because it is so accessible drastic treatment may be undertaken prematurely and incorrectly. This does not threaten life but may cause permanent morbidity. Dr Stoker has set about examining this joint in depth as a radiologist. As a direct result the surgeon will be helped to make a correct diagnosis and avoid pitfalls, by a diagnostic procedure that is of little inconvenience to a patient. Arthrography is not new but a fresh appraisal is timely. This is not to suggest that there can be any slackening in clinical examination, or that other methods of examination do not have a place. But there are knee joint problems, particularly in teenage girls, in which a clinical diagnosis is very difficult, but must be made exactly. Arthrography must be accepted as a very useful method of examination of the knee joint and an essential one in certain circumstances. More radiologists should be interested in undertaking this examination and surgeons should ask for it. E.L. Trickey, F.R.C.S.
The first MATLAB (R) programming book written specifically for clinical radiotherapy medical physicists and medical physics trainees, this much-needed book teaches users how to create their own clinical applications using MATLAB (R), as a complement to commercial software particularly when the latter does not cover specific local clinical needs. Chapters explore key radiotherapy areas such as handling volumes, 3D dose calculation, comparing dose distributions, reconstructing treatment plans and their summations, and automated tests for machine quality assurance. Readers will learn to independently analyse and process images, doses, structures, and other radiotherapy clinical data to deal with standard and non-standard situations in radiotherapy. This book will also significantly improve understanding of areas such as data nature, information content, DICOM RT standard, and data flow. It will be an invaluable reference for students of medical physics, in addition to clinical radiotherapy physicists and researchers working in radiotherapy. Features: Includes real clinical medical physics applications derived from actual clinical problems Provides commented MATLAB (R) scripts working with sample data and/or own data matching input requirements Promotes critical thinking and practical problem solving skills
Cholecystoses, as dealt with in this book by Dr J. H. J. Ruijs, radiologist, and DrS. G. Th. Hulst, internist, is an interesting clinical and pathologi- cal entity and is unique in that it was introduced into medicine by radiological examination. Soon after the discovery of a usable contrast medium for the gallbladder examination- 35 years ago - some features of cholecystoses have appeared in publications: Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses and adeno- myomatosis. Jutras' display at the Congress in Montreal in 1962, informed the international radiological world of the common basis for the many different manifestations of cholecystoses. Every radiologist is now acquainted with cholecystoses, but as symptoms are sometimes extremely slight - radiological technique must be exact. The aim of this book is to inform the clinician and surgeon on this clinical and radiodiagnostic entity, and to correlate symptoms and signs with the possible need for surgery. Drs Ruijs and Hulst have succeeded in presenting all this information clearly and succinctly. C.B.A.J. Puijlaert, M.D.
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a valuable diagnostic modality now routinely used during cardiac surgery and in the intensive care unit. Increasingly, anesthesiologists, cardiologists and critical care physicians trained in TEE provide the service in both settings where they face the challenge of integrating numerous current TEE guidelines into day-to-day practice. Perioperative Two-Dimensional Transesophageal Echocardiography: A Practical Handbook, 2nd Edition has been designed to be a concise, portable guide for using TEE to recognize cardiac pathology during the perioperative period. This compact guide has a diverse appeal for anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons and cardiologists desiring comprehensive up-to-date echocardiographic information at their fingertips. Features Updated to include 4 new chapters Now contains more than 600 full-color, high quality clinical images and illustrations Includes the most recent guidelines Retains a compact format that highlights key information Synopsis of cardiac pathology commonly encountered in cardiac surgery patients On-the-spot reference for echocardiographers with a wide range from novice to expert experience
Since its presentation by G.N. Hounsfield at the second Congress of the European Association of Radiology in Amsterdam in June 1971, "Computerised Trans verse Axial Tomography" which became later on "Computerised Axial Tomography (CAT)" then simply "Computed Tomography (CT)" has developed extremely rapidly. Many papers have appeared in a short time, pointed out the substantial advantages of this new technique and precisely describing the characteristic images obtained. The number of devices is already considerable and their evolution tends towards the improvement of the quality of images and the shortening of exploration time. It is not an exaggeration to say that there is no longer any Neuroradiology without computed tomography. Does that mean that this new technique is infallible and that classical neuroradiological techniques are due to disappear in the near future? Experience shows that if certain techniques, such as gas encephalography, 'are less frequently employed since CT, others, such as cerebral angiography, are still commonly required.

Radiotherapy remains a major non-surgical treatment modality for malignant disease, and an understanding of how this treatment works is essential in ensuring optimum practice. Trainees in oncology learn about ionising radiation, but to understand it fully they must also understand the physics relevant to its use in therapy. This book is written specifically for the oncology and radiation team, supporting clinical oncologists in their understanding of the science which underpins radiotherapy. It begins with basic concepts and then explores the principles and practice of physics as it relates to radiotherapy, including discussion of specific types of therapy. Written by authors chosen for their expertise in in their respective fields, and aligned to the Royal College of Radiologists FRCR Curriculum in Oncology, this volume will provide an excellent source of information for trainee and practicing oncologists, and wider radiotherapy teams. This second edition has been fully updated to reflect advances in technology and the increased complexity in modern radiotherapy, including two new chapters on imaging and a new brachytherapy chapter.
This book presents up to date debates and issues in the world of breast MRI with a very practical focus on how to incorporate current understanding of breast MRI into clinical practice. The book is divided into three key sections, all of which have critical impact for the breast imager: Techniques introduces the reader to the parameters of breast MRI from standard sequences to up-to-date cutting edge techniques. Indications provides a careful review of the accepted indications for breast MRI from High Risk Screening to use of breast MRI, in the context of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with a detailed analysis of the evidence-based support for these indications and a careful look at controversies and debates within the field. MRI Findings, Interpretation, and Management takes on the topics of how to interpret and manage specific MRI findings from benign to malignant disease with a focus on radiologic-pathologic correlation. The section also incorporates a focus on key management dilemmas, including appropriate follow-up intervals for benign findings on MRI and management of probably benign lesions assessed as a Breast Imaging Reporting and Dictating System (BI-RADS)-3 category on MRI.

1. Would a better understanding of the anatomy and improvement of the method make it possible to reduce the percentage of failures sufficiently to earn selective arteriography of bronchial and intercostal arteries a place among the accepted methods of selective arteriographic investigation? 2. Can indications for such selective arteriographical investigations be formulated? The answers to these questions were considered to offer a basis for the evaluation of the clinical contribution to be expected of this method. In designing this research project, we started by making a detailed study of the radiological and anatomical literature. I I LITERATURE 11.1. PART I -RADIOLOGY Wide bronchial arteries can be demonstrated by conventional radiological methods. CAMPBELL AND GARDNER (1950), CSAKANY (1964) and KIEFFER ET AL. (1965) described characteristic pictures seen on normal X-ray's and RICHTER (1965) those seen on tomograms of the thorax. TAUSSIG (1947) and SEGERS AND BROMBART (1953) established typical impressions in the esophagus. Some of these authors, including CAMPBELL AND GARDNER (1950) and GARUSI (1961), saw wide bronchial arteries on venous angiocardiograms, but direct study of the bronchial arteries can only be done by arteriography, which still has a rather brief history. Research has been done in dogs and in man; only the latter will be discussed.
