The 11th international Conference on ADVANCES IN PROSTAGLANDIN AND LEUKOTRIENE RESEARCH: BASICSCIENCEANDNEWCLlNICALApPLlCA TIONS was held, as in the past, in Florence, Italy, on June 4-8, 2000. A selection of lectures presented at the meeting is included in this volume, which continues the tradition of covering both basic and clinical aspects of prostaglandin and leukotriene research. At this meeting particular emphasis was given to the lipid mediator circuits of lipoxin and leukotrienes and to the expression ofthe COX2 gene. The plenary lectures by C.N. Serhan (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) and H.R. Herschman (Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.) were devoted to these areas, while S. Narumiya (Kyoto, Japan) and J.M. Drazen (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) presented the latest advances in the fields ofprostanoid receptors and the genetics of asthma. Specific sessions focused on vascular physiopathology, cell differentiation and cancer, and the cardiovascular system. Lipoxygenases were discussed in detail at the molecular and cellular levels and attention was given to signal transduction pathways for leukotrienes and prostanoids. K.F. Austen (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) and T. Izumi (Tokyo, Japan) clarified the role and regulation ofLTC synthase ofleukotriene biosynthesis. Other important sessions 4 described regulation and control of nitric oxide, cannabimimetic eicosanoids, and the roles of eicosanoids in neuroscience. Applied clinical sessions devoted to the respiratory system and inflammation, including cyclooxygenase pathways, concluded the meeting.

The International Society of Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT) was founded in 1973 to provide a forum for bioengineers, basic scientists, physiologists, and physicians to discuss new data, original theories, new interpretations of old data, and new technologies for the measurement of oxygen. At each annual meeting all posters are presented orally along with plenary lectures, and all presentations are given in a general session attended by everyone. Each meeting has had a specific focus, ranging from neonatology to physical chemistry to cancer biology. The Society has helped to build many careers, through opportunities to meet leaders in the field, and through awards made to young physicians and scientists. The Society also, through cross fertilization of ideas and scientific comradery, has inspired many breakthroughs in clinical medicine that now benefit mankind. I find myself president of the society after having been a winner of the Melvin Knisely Award for young scientists, in 1991. The 2003 meeting emphasized the role of oxygen and oxygen measurement in tumor growth, metastasis, physiology, and treatment resistance. Additionally, however, completely novel approaches to measurement of tissue oxygen were presented (notably work by Dr. Takahashi) and molecular methods for estimating tissue oxygen were evaluated. Papers discussing other aspects of oxygen measurement and pathophysiology were presented including in vivo ESR spectroscopy (notably including Dr. Swartz and colleagues), exercise physiology, organ transplant outcome (discussed by Dr. Cicco, our 2004 president), circulatory physiology, and cerebral oxygenation (notably including Dr. Chance).

The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT, www. isott. info) is an interdisciplinary society comprising about 250 members worldwide. Its purpose is to further the understanding of all aspects of the processes involved in the transport of oxygen from the air to its ultimate consumption in the cells of the various organs of the body. The annual meeting brings together scientists, engineers, clinicians and mathematicians in a unique int- national forum for the exchange of information and knowledge, the updating of participants on latest developments and techniques, and the discussion of controversial issues within the field of oxygen transport to tissue. Founded in 1973, the society has been the leading platform for the presentation of many of the technological and conceptual developments within the field both at the meetings themselves and in the proceedings of the society. These have been published first by Plenum Publishing (1973), then by Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers and presently by Springer Publishing, all in the Advances In Expe- mental Medicine and Biology Series. The 36th Annual ISOTT conference was held in Sapporo, Japan during August 3-7, 2008. It was the second occasion that the ISOTT meeting was held in Japan; the first one was held in the same place in 1987 organized by Professor Masaji Mochizuki.

Sam H. Ahmedzai, David R. Baldwin, David C Currow
R4,435 Discovery Miles 44 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Respiratory symptoms such as breathlessness and cough are common in patients with advancing and incurable disease. For example, cancer, chronic cardiac and pulmonary disease, progressive neuromuscular disorders and degenerative disorders all give rise to varying degrees of respiratory distress which adversely affects the patient's quality of life. In recent years, there has been significant growth into the palliation of respiratory symptoms leading to practical ways of giving relief in hospices, hospitals and at home. The second edition of this popular title in the Supportive Care series includes non-malignant respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis in AIDS patients, cystic fibrosis and ventilator-dependent patients, and focuses on aetiology and diagnosis and management, emphasising symptoms, quality of life and psychosocial support. The underlying theme of the book is the application of modern research-based knowledge, in a humane way, for patients with advancing disease.

Chest Imaging - An Algorithmic Approach to Learning (Paperback, 2012): Les R. Folio Chest Imaging - An Algorithmic Approach to Learning (Paperback, 2012)
Les R. Folio
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The chest X-ray (CXR) or chest radiograph remains the most commonly ordered imaging study in medicine, yet paradoxically is often the most complex to learn, recall, and master effective and accurate interpretation. The chest radiograph includes all thoracic anatomy and provides a high yield, given the low cost and single source. This guide presents a structured lexicon for use by readers to reproducibly describe radiographic abnormalities of the chest detected on plain film CXRs. The lexicon is designed to provide readers with clinically significant differentiation of abnormalities detected. The content is structured to relate specific combinations of distinct radiographic findings to classes/groupings of pathological etiologies of those findings. Recognizing the individual findings and identifying their combination or lack of combination with other individual findings allows readers to create effective differential diagnoses that can then be further evaluated using other imaging procedures and/or non-radiographic clinical information. The book includes hundreds of images, including radiographs, CTs, graphics, and analogous models to help teach otherwise complex processes and radiographic principles.

Connective Tissues in Arterial and Pulmonary Disease (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1981): T.F.... Connective Tissues in Arterial and Pulmonary Disease (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1981)
T.F. McDonald, A. B. Chandler
R1,429 Discovery Miles 14 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The processes of distention and recoil have an essential role in the functions of arteries and lungs. In both organ systems, these processes involve to a great extent the connective tissues, in particular the manner in which the extracellular materials are arranged to afford such movements. This book concerns the microenvironment of the connective tissues in the walls of arteries and the stroma of lungs. Proteoglycans, collagen, and elastic fibers and their interrelationships are discussed by eight scientists who are established researchers in this area. Their reports include important findings on how this microenvironment is altered in diseases such as atherosclerosis, emphysema, and pulmonary fibrosis. The concepts developed result from studies at the biochemical, macromolecular, ultrastructural, and light microscopic levels. Taken col lectively, the reports focus attention upon the role of the connective tissues in arterial and lung distensibility and how alterations in the connective tissues result in the loss of this function. Medical researchers and physicians interested in arterial or lung functions or diseases will find the scientific approaches and findings of the authors innovative and provocative. Students of stereologic morphometry will be particularly interested in the quantitative studies of cells and fibers in arterial walls; histologists and pathologists will find the chapter on histochemical staining interesting from both a scientific and historic viewpoint.

Airway Smooth Muscle in Health and Disease (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): R. F. Coburn Airway Smooth Muscle in Health and Disease (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
R. F. Coburn
R1,416 Discovery Miles 14 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

I organized this book because there is a need to put together in book form recent advances in our knowledge of how airway smooth muscle: works in health and in disease. After a period when it seemed that progress was very slow, there has been in the past few years an incredibly rapid gathering of knowledge in this area. In particular, our understanding has improved regarding the cascades of events that follow the initial binding of agonist to plasma membrane receptors and that lead to the cross-bridge movements that determine contraction. This advance in our knowledge was stimulated by use of single-and whole-cell channel recordings of plasma membrane currents and by description of the l3-receptor-GTP-binding protein-adenylate cyclase-cAMP coupling system, which serves as a model for other coupling mechanisms. The discovery of the receptor-activated inositol phospholipid transduction system has greatly stimulated research and led to advances in our understanding of mechanisms involved in smooth muscle con traction. Major advances were also triggered by the development of indicators for measuring free cytosolic calcium concentration and starting the unraveling of 2 the events involved in Ca + -dependent activation of contractile proteins. Al though most of the studies that led to our current understanding of these areas were performed on nonairway smooth muscle, these studies usually add to our understanding of airway smooth muscle, and there is an enlarging body of data that have been obtained on airway smooth muscle."

Violeta Mihailovic-Vucinic, Om P. Sharma
R5,802 Discovery Miles 58 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sarcoidosis is a complex multisystem disease. Shortness of breath (dyspnea) and a cough that won't go away can be among the first symptoms of sarcoidosis, but sarcoidosis can also show up suddenly with the appearance of skin rashes and other dermatoses.

An Atlas of Sarcoidosis: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Clinical Features combines illustrations and clinical images of the authors' extensive practices, so that readers have unparalleled access to a comprehensive collection of sarcoidosis images. The atlas is designed to complement and provide a visual supplement to already existing texts on sarcoidosis. Each organ involvement is dealt in a brief and easy to comprehend manner. Various radiographic and laboratory abnormalities are then linked to the clinical features in order to encourage a smooth and easy practical integration at the bedside and to help practising pulmonologists, dermatologists and other clinicians who require a comprehensive visual encyclopedia of sarcoidosis images.

Management of Sepsis: the PIRO Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009): Jordi Rello, Emilio Diaz,... Management of Sepsis: the PIRO Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009)
Jordi Rello, Emilio Diaz, Alejandro Rodriguez
R2,599 Discovery Miles 25 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sepsis is a very important public health problem. It is widely acknowledged that the severe inflammatory response syndrome/severe sepsis paradigm fails to stratify sepsis patients adequately. This book reviews in detail how sepsis should be managed on the basis of a novel approach to staging. The PIRO (predisposing factors, infection, response, organ dysfunction) model was first proposed at the start of the decade on a theoretical basis and has now been translated into a practical approach for use at the bedside. It is loosely based on the TNM staging system for cancers, with points being allocated to each of the four aforementioned key characteristics of the septic process. The proposed PIRO framework facilitates evaluation of factors that are important in the pathogenesis of severe sepsis and in the development of treatment strategies. This book clearly explains the advantages of the PIRO approach in different settings and will be of value to all practitioners concerned with the management of sepsis.

Asthma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2000): K. Fan Chung, Ian Adcock Asthma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2000)
K. Fan Chung, Ian Adcock
R4,035 Discovery Miles 40 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Asthma has rapidly become one of the most common chronic illnesses of the Western world, and its prevalence continues to rise, with the proportion of patients with more severe diseases also increasing. Faced with this problem, more researchers are focusing on the causes, mechanisms, and pathophysiology of asthma. The major hopes are that more effective drugs will become available and that preventive measures can be instituted. Increasingly, molecular and cell bi- ogy approaches are being used to characterize and understand the mechanisms of the inflammatory process that is typical of the asthmatic airway. This volume on Asthma: Mechanisms and Protocols in the Methods in Molecular Medicineseries provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms involved in asthma by p- viding extensive protocols that are being used in asthma research. Briefly, it c- ers details of methods for obtaining cells from the airways, analysis of gene and protein expression in the limited clinical samples from asthmatic airways, use of molecular and cellular tools for studying cytokine expression and release, studies of asthma-related genes and genetic polymorphisms, and understanding the - fects of asthma treatments. With such coverage, the volume ties in several dis- plines, including allergy and immunology, cell biology, pharmacology, and histology. We have continued in the spirit of the series to provide a bench book for day-to-day use.
