Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy - Bioanalytical, Biomolecular and Medical Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy - Bioanalytical, Biomolecular and Medical Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Marek Prochazka
R3,365 Discovery Miles 33 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book gives an overview of recent developments in RS and SERS for sensing and biosensing considering also limitations, possibilities and prospects of this technique. Raman scattering (RS) is a widely used vibrational technique providing highly specific molecular spectral patterns. A severe limitation for the application of this spectroscopic technique lies in the low cross section of RS. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy overcomes this problem by 6-11 orders of magnitude enhancement compared with the standard RS for molecules in the close vicinity of certain rough metal surfaces. Thus, SERS combines molecular fingerprint specificity with potential single-molecule sensitivity. Due to the recent development of new SERS-active substrates, labeling and derivatization chemistry as well as new instrumentations, SERS became a very promising tool for many varied applications, including bioanalytical studies and sensing. Both intrinsic and extrinsic SERS biosensing schemes have been employed to detect and identify small molecules, nucleic acids and proteins, and also for cellular and in vivo sensing.

Evaluating Measurement Accuracy - A Practical Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 3rd ed. 2017): Semyon G.... Evaluating Measurement Accuracy - A Practical Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 3rd ed. 2017)
Semyon G. Rabinovich
R7,250 Discovery Miles 72 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the theory of measurement accuracy and provides solutions that fill significant and long-standing gaps in the classical theory. It eliminates the shortcomings of the classical theory by including methods for estimating accuracy of single measurements, the most common type of measurement. The book also develops methods of reduction and enumeration for indirect measurements, which do not require Taylor series and produce a precise solution to this problem. It produces grounded methods and recommendations for summation of errors. The monograph also analyzes and critiques two foundation metrological documents, the International Vocabulary of Metrology (VIM) and the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), and discusses directions for their revision. This new edition adds a step-by-step guide on how to evaluate measurement accuracy and recommendations on how to calculate systematic error of multiple measurements. There is also an extended section on the method of reduction, which provides an alternative to the least-square method and the method of enumeration. Many sections are also rewritten to improve the structure and usability of the material. The 3rd edition reflects the latest developments in metrology and offers new results, and it is designed to be accessible to readers at various levels and positions, including scientists, engineers, and undergraduate and graduate students. By presenting material from a practical perspective and offering solutions and recommendations for problems that arise in conducting real-life measurements, author Semyon Rabinovich offers an invaluable resource for scientists in any field.

Observation of _ _e Oscillation in the T2K Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Kei Ieki Observation of _ _e Oscillation in the T2K Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Kei Ieki
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this thesis the author contributes to the analysis of neutrino beam data collected between 2010 and 2013 to identify e events at the Super-Kamiokande detector. In particular, the author improves the pion-nucleus interaction uncertainty, which is one of the dominant systematic error sources in T2K neutrino oscillation measurement. In the thesis, the measurement of e oscillation in the T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) experiment is presented and a new constraint on CP is obtained. This measurement and the analysis establish, at greater than 5 significance, the observation of e oscillation for the first time in the world. Combining the T2K e oscillation measurement with the latest findings on oscillation parameters including the world average value of 13 from reactor experiments, the constraint on the value of CP at the 90% confidence level is obtained. This constraint on CP is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector.

In particular, it includes real-time measurement of serum proteins interacting with engineered nanomaterial. Making meaningful and unambiguous measurements has been an evolving problem in the field of biology and its various allied domains, primarily due to the complex nature of experiments and the large number of possible interferants. The subsequent quantification of interactions between biomolecules and inorganic surfaces solves pressing problems in the rapidly developing fields of lipidomics and nanomedicine.

Control of the Gravitational Wave Interferometric Detector Advanced Virgo (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Control of the Gravitational Wave Interferometric Detector Advanced Virgo (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Julia Casanueva Diaz
R3,119 Discovery Miles 31 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the development and implementation of the longitudinal, angular and frequency controls of the Advanced Virgo detector, both from the simulation and experimental point of view, which contributed to Virgo reaching a sensitivity that enabled it to join the LIGO-Virgo O2 run in August 2017. This data taking was very successful, with the first direct detection of a binary black hole merger (GW170814) using the full network of three interferometers, and the first detection and localization of a binary neutron star merger (GW170817). The second generation of gravitational wave detector, Advanced Virgo, is capable of detecting differential displacements of the order of 10-21m. This means that it is highly sensitive to any disturbance, including the seismic movement of the Earth. For this reason an active control is necessary to keep the detector in place with sufficient accuracy.

The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force - Discovery, Pursuit, and Justification in Modern Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force - Discovery, Pursuit, and Justification in Modern Physics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 2016)
Allan Franklin, Ephraim Fischbach
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides the reader with a detailed and captivating account of the story where, for the first time, physicists ventured into proposing a new force of nature beyond the four known ones - the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces, and gravitation - based entirely on the reanalysis of existing experimental data. Back in 1986, Ephraim Fischbach, Sam Aronson, Carrick Talmadge and their collaborators proposed a modification of Newton's Law of universal gravitation. Underlying this proposal were three tantalizing pieces of evidence: 1) an energy dependence of the CP (particle-antiparticle and reflection symmetry) parameters, 2) differences between the measurements of G, the universal gravitational constant, in laboratories and in mineshafts, and 3) a reanalysis of the Eoetvos experiment, which had previously been used to show that the gravitational mass of an object and its inertia mass were equal to approximately one part in a billion. The reanalysis revealed that, contrary to Galileo's position, the force of gravity was in fact very slightly different for different substances. The resulting Fifth Force hypothesis included this composition dependence and also added a small distance dependence to the inverse-square gravitational force. Over the next four years numerous experiments were performed to test the hypothesis. By 1990 there was overwhelming evidence that the Fifth Force, as initially proposed, did not exist. This book discusses how the Fifth Force hypothesis came to be proposed and how it went on to become a showcase of discovery, pursuit and justification in modern physics, prior to its demise. In this new and significantly expanded edition, the material from the first edition is complemented by two essays, one containing Fischbach's personal reminiscences of the proposal, and a second on the ongoing history and impact of the Fifth Force hypothesis from 1990 to the present.

Induction Motor Fault Diagnosis - Approach through Current Signature Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Induction Motor Fault Diagnosis - Approach through Current Signature Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Subrata Karmakar, Surajit Chattopadhyay, Madhuchhanda Mitra, Samarjit Sengupta
R3,091 Discovery Miles 30 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book covers the diagnosis and assessment of the various faults which can occur in a three phase induction motor, namely rotor broken-bar faults, rotor-mass unbalance faults, stator winding faults, single phasing faults and crawling. Following a brief introduction, the second chapter describes the construction and operation of an induction motor, then reviews the range of known motor faults, some existing techniques for fault analysis, and some useful signal processing techniques. It includes an extensive literature survey to establish the research trends in induction motor fault analysis. Chapters three to seven describe the assessment of each of the five primary fault types. In the third chapter the rotor broken-bar fault is discussed and then two methods of diagnosis are described; (i) diagnosis of the fault through Radar analysis of stator current Concordia and (ii) diagnosis through envelope analysis of motor startup current using Hilbert and Wavelet Transforms. In chapter four, rotor-mass unbalance faults are assessed, and diagnosis of both transient and steady state stator current has been analyzed using different techniques. If both rotor broken-bar and rotor-mass unbalance faults occur simultaneously then for identification an algorithm is provided in this chapter. Chapter five considers stator winding faults and five different analysis techniques, chapter six covers diagnosis of single phasing faults, and chapter seven describes crawling and its diagnosis. Finally, chapter eight focuses on fault assessment, and presents a summary of the book together with a discussion of prospects for future research on fault diagnosis.

Powerful Pulsed Plasma Generators - Research and Application (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018):... Powerful Pulsed Plasma Generators - Research and Application (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Victor Kolikov, Alexander Bogomaz, Alexander Budin
R3,611 Discovery Miles 36 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents experimental and theoretical results on extremely powerful plasma generators. It addresses pulsed electrical mega-ampere arcs and the mechanisms of energy transfer from the arc into hydrogen, helium and air under pressures up to 250 MPa and currents up to 2 MA. Extreme plasma parameters and increased energy density in the arc were achieved. It was found experimentally that increasing the initial gas pressure to hundreds of MPa leads to improved arc stability, high efficiency of energy transfer from arc to gas, and plasma enthalpy growth. The data obtained data provides the basis for the development of electrophysical devices with high energy density, e.g. high intensity sources for visible, UV and X-ray irradiation for laser pumping, generators of high enthalpy plasma jets, and plasma chemical reactors.

Spectrally Resolved Detector Arrays for Multiplexed Biomedical Fluorescence Imaging (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... Spectrally Resolved Detector Arrays for Multiplexed Biomedical Fluorescence Imaging (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Anna Siri Luthman
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes the design, development, characterisation and application of two novel fluorescence imaging instruments based on spectrally resolved detector arrays (SRDAs). The simplest SRDA is the standard colour camera, which integrates a Bayer filter array of red, green and blue colour filters to replicate the colour sensing capability of the human eye. The SRDAs used in this book contain many more colours, ranging from 16 to over 100 colour channels. Using these compact, robust and low-cost detectors for biomedical applications opens new avenues of exploration that were not possible before, in particular, the use of spectral imaging in endoscopy. The work presented shows for the first time that not only can this new type of camera be used for fluorescence imaging, but also that it is able to resolve signals from up to 7 different dyes - a level of multiplexing not previously achieved in tissue with such compact and robust equipment. Furthermore, it reports the application of a bimodal endoscope performing both reflectance and fluorescence imaging using these cameras in an ex vivo pig oesophagus model.

Search for the Pentaquark + via the p K X Reaction at J-PARC (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016):... Search for the Pentaquark + via the p K X Reaction at J-PARC (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Manabu Moritsu
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This theses reports on an experimental search for an exotic hadron, +(1540) pentaquark, which is a genuine exotic hadron with a five-quark system of uuddsbar. The results of this book support that the existence of + was strongly constrained. The + pentaquark was searched for via the - p K- X reaction using a beam momentum of 2.01 GeV/c at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility, taking advantage of high-statistics and high-resolution compared with previous experiments, some of which claimed the evidence of +. In order to realize a good missing-mass resolution of 2 MeV, the beam spectrometer and superconducting kaon spectrometer were constructed. No clear peak was observed in the missing mass spectrum of the - p K- X reaction, and the upper limit of the production cross section was found to be less than 0.28 b/sr at the 90% confidence level in a mass region of 1500-1560 MeV/c2. This upper limit is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the previous KEK experiment. Compared with a theoretical calculation using the effective Lagrangian approach, the decay width of + was evaluated. The upper limits on the decay width were estimated to be 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the + spin-parity of 1/2+ and 1/2-, respectively. These are quite small for a width of ordinary hadron resonances, and the existence of + was strongly constrained and is doubtful.

Bohmian Mechanics, Open Quantum Systems and Continuous Measurements (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Bohmian Mechanics, Open Quantum Systems and Continuous Measurements (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Antonio B. Nassar, Salvador Miret-Artes
R4,059 Discovery Miles 40 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book shows how Bohmian mechanics overcomes the need for a measurement postulate involving wave function collapse. The measuring process plays a very important role in quantum mechanics. It has been widely analyzed within the Copenhagen approach through the Born and von Neumann postulates, with later extension due to Luders. In contrast, much less effort has been invested in the measurement theory within the Bohmian mechanics framework. The continuous measurement (sharp and fuzzy, or strong and weak) problem is considered here in this framework. The authors begin by generalizing the so-called Mensky approach, which is based on restricted path integral through quantum corridors. The measuring system is then considered to be an open quantum system following a stochastic Schroedinger equation. Quantum stochastic trajectories (in the Bohmian sense) and their role in basic quantum processes are discussed in detail. The decoherence process is thereby described in terms of classical trajectories issuing from the violation of the noncrossing rule of quantum trajectories.

The Statistical Stability Phenomenon (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Igor I. Gorban The Statistical Stability Phenomenon (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Igor I. Gorban
R2,894 Discovery Miles 28 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph investigates violations of statistical stability of physical events, variables, and processes and develops a new physical-mathematical theory taking into consideration such violations - the theory of hyper-random phenomena. There are five parts. The first describes the phenomenon of statistical stability and its features, and develops methods for detecting violations of statistical stability, in particular when data is limited. The second part presents several examples of real processes of different physical nature and demonstrates the violation of statistical stability over broad observation intervals. The third part outlines the mathematical foundations of the theory of hyper-random phenomena, while the fourth develops the foundations of the mathematical analysis of divergent and many-valued functions. The fifth part contains theoretical and experimental studies of statistical laws where there is violation of statistical stability. The monograph should be of particular interest to engineers and scientists in general who study the phenomenon of statistical stability and use statistical methods for high-precision measurements, prediction, and signal processing over long observation intervals.
