VHF Afloat (Paperback, 3rd edition): Sara Hopkinson VHF Afloat (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Sara Hopkinson
R367 R333 Discovery Miles 3 330 Save R34 (9%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A VHF set has a variety of functions: use it to call other craft, marinas and the Coastguard; listen to information broadcasts, gale warnings or even get medical advice from a doctor. In an emergency it is your lifeline and far more effective than a mobile phone. All of these uses make VHF an invaluable piece of kit on board.

VHF Afloat explains how to use your VHF DSC radio. It covers licensing the equipment and the gaining the operator certificate, and then takes you through each type of call.

Each procedure is clearly illustrated using the story of the yacht "Sierra," to show how the radio is used on passage to communicate with marinas, other vessels and the Coastguard, including how a MAYDAY is managed by the rescue services.

Use VHF Afloat to help pass the assessment, and then keep it on board when you need to make a call - the facts will be right at your fingertips.

Authoritative, practical, and hands-on information on reading and relying on electronic and paper nautical charts

The classic "How to Read a Nautical Chart" explains every aspect of electronic and paper nautical charts: how a chart is assembled, how to gauge the accuracy of chart data, how to read charts created by other governments, how to use information such as scale, projection technique and datum that every chart contains; how not to get fooled or run aground by overzooming. Nigel Calder teaches you how to squeeze every ounce of information out of a nautical chart (on your GPS, chartplotter, or nav station) and understand the limits of accuracy for all charts, paper and electronic, raster and vector. This much-awaited second edition addresses the changes in the world of electronic charting, integrated onboard navigation systems, as well as radar overlays and AIS and their interfacing with charts. A new chapter on the Wiki Revolution explores the mechanisms allowing you to incorporate user-generated content into navigational products and share this content with others--harnessing a user-base never before possible. Calder also explores how 3D-technology and real-time depth and weather information is creating interactive charting capacities that are fundamentally changing how we navigate. Calder's unique, practical insights will help you to navigate safely for years to come.

Design of Ship Hull Structures - A Practical Guide for Engineers (Hardcover): Yasuhisa Okumoto, Yu Takeda, Masaki Mano, Tetsuo... Design of Ship Hull Structures - A Practical Guide for Engineers (Hardcover)
Yasuhisa Okumoto, Yu Takeda, Masaki Mano, Tetsuo Okada
R7,256 Discovery Miles 72 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this book, the four authors show us the condensed experience how to design ship hull structures from a practical viewpoint. In three parts, the book presents the fundamentals, the theory and the application of structural design of hulls. The topics are treated comprehensively with an emphasis on how to achieve reliable and efficient ship structures. The authors have in particular introduced their experiences with the rapid increase of ship sizes as well as the introduction of ship types with a high degree of specialization. The associated early failures of these "new" structures have been analyzed to provide the readers with illustrations why structural design needs to be carried out on several levels in order to ensure that correct loading is applied and that local structural behaviour in properly understood.

For all those who love boats, their 'lines' are an essential element in the appreciation of individual craft. But what are these lines and how are they created? This book introduces the reader to the key principles of yacht design in a straightforward and understandable manner, allowing them to be aware of the elements and processes involved. Most of the complex maths has been replaced with simple rules of thumb. Any boat owner will benefit from understanding the characteristics of boat design which will help them if they want to modify the hull, rig, deck layout or accommodation. It will be equally useful to boat buyers who want to ask questions like: "How will she sail?"; "How much will she cost?"; "How easy is it to change things?" and "How can I reduce or increase sail area without upsetting the balance?" Boat owners and buyers will be able to feel more confident when talking to designers and boatbuilders about their current or future boat. While novice boat designers can start their journey with this book, giving them a good foundation whether they want to use pencil and paper or Computer-Aided Design. So, if you are any of the above, or simply have an interest in yacht design, this is the book for you!

Olympic Titanic Britannic - The anatomy and evolution of the Olympic Class (Hardcover): Simon Mills Olympic Titanic Britannic - The anatomy and evolution of the Olympic Class (Hardcover)
Simon Mills
R795 Discovery Miles 7 950 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Titanic. The Britannic. The Olympic. They are some of the most famous ships in history, but for the wrong reasons. The Olympic Class liners were conceived as the largest, grandest ships ever to set sail. Of the three ships built, the first only lost the record for being the largest because she was beaten by the second, and they were both beaten by the third. The class was meant to secure the White Star Line's reputation as the greatest shipping company on earth. Instead, with the loss of both the Titanic and the Britannic in their first year of service, it guaranteed White Star's infamy. This unique book tells the extraordinary story of these three extraordinary ships from the bottom up, starting with their conception and construction (and later their modification) and following their very different careers. Behind the technical details of these magnificent ships lies a tragic human story - not just of the lives lost aboard the Titanic and Britannic, but of the designers pushing the limits beyond what was actually possible, engineers unable to prepare for every twist of fate, and ship owners and crew who truly believed a ship could be unsinkable. This fascinating story is told with rare photographs, new computer-generated recreations of the ships, and unique wreck images that explore how well the ships were designed and built. Simon Mills offers unparalleled access to shipbuilders Harland & Wolff's specification book for the Olympic Class, including original blueprints and - being made widely available for the first time - large fold-out technical drawings showing how these extensive plans were meant to be seen.

Science, Utility and Maritime Power - Samuel Bentham in Russia, 1779-91 (Hardcover, New Ed): Roger Morriss Science, Utility and Maritime Power - Samuel Bentham in Russia, 1779-91 (Hardcover, New Ed)
Roger Morriss
R4,729 Discovery Miles 47 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Samuel Bentham influenced both the technology and the administrative ideas employed in the management of the British navy. His influence stemmed from his passion for science, from his desire to achieve improvements based on a belief in the principle of Utility, and from experience gained over eleven years in Russia, a large part in the service of Catherine the Great and Prince Potemkin. Having travelled extensively throughout the north and south of Russia, Poland and Siberia, he managed Potemkin's industries at Krichev, built fast river galleys, armed the Russian flotilla of small craft at Kherson and served with the flotilla that defeated the Turks in the Black Sea. His main ambition was to open river communication in Siberia and develop trade into the Pacific. However he returned to England and in 1796 became Inspector General of Naval Works, a post in which he fought for innovations in the technology and management of the British royal dockyards. Regarded then by the Navy Board as a dangerous maverick, this book reveals the experiences, creativity and thinking that made him a major figure in British naval development.
