Medieval Ships and Warfare (Hardcover, New Ed): Susan Rose Medieval Ships and Warfare (Hardcover, New Ed)
Susan Rose
R7,640 Discovery Miles 76 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays and articles from a wide range of journals is intended to make more accessible to students and scholars some of the most important writing in English in this field from the 1950s to the present day. The volume draws attention to work on both the design and the use of ships in warfare in the period c.1000-c.1500. The collection deals with both the Mediterranean and northern waters in this period and not only makes clear what work has been done in this field but indicates areas where more research is needed.

This multidisciplinary volume features invited contributions on mathematical applications in naval engineering. Seeking a more holistic approach that transcends current scientific boundaries, leading experts present interdisciplinary instruments and models on a broad range of topics. Each chapter places special emphasis on important methods, research directions, and applications of analysis within the field. Fundamental scientific and mathematical concepts are applied to topics such as the butterfly structure of the FFT, the acoustic impedance of pistons in a two-layer medium, deterministic batch trackers, spline equations, moving horizons estimation, membership games for planning sensor networks, statistical models of inertial sensors, random flight searches in bounded domains, the acoustics of a mixed porosity felt airfoil, and a novel aft boundary condition for a towed flexible cylinder. Carefully peer-reviewed and pedagogically presented for a broad readership, this volume is perfect for graduate and postdoctoral students interested in interdisciplinary research. Researchers in applied mathematics and sciences will find this book an important resource on the latest developments in the field. In keeping with the STEAM-H series, this volume hopes to inspire interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration.

The Practical Guide to Celestial Navigation - Step-by-step instructions for when you've lost the plot (Hardcover): Phil... The Practical Guide to Celestial Navigation - Step-by-step instructions for when you've lost the plot (Hardcover)
Phil Somerville
R864 Discovery Miles 8 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The practical guide to celestial navigation - know what to do step by step, understand why you're doing it, and be confident that you can put it into practice when on board. Did you know that a person standing on the equator is effectively travelling at 900mph? And did you know that you can use this information to work out where you are in the world, to an accuracy of about 3 or 4 miles? No GPS, no computers. Just a sextant, some tables from an Almanac and the knowledge in this book. It’s the only back up if the GPS goes down, so it’s a matter of safety. If you want to qualify as a commercial skipper/superyacht captain you need to know how to carry out celestial navigation. And if you want to pass the RYA Ocean Yachtmaster™ exam, you need to know it too. It’s a major stumbling block for many sailors wanting or needing to take their next qualifications, and the other books on the market are complex and often assume some prior understanding. This book fulfils the need for a clear explanation of celestial navigation, illustrated with colour diagrams and including unique checklist sheets to enable you to repeat all those calculations you learned back at home, when you’re on deck. Without overwhelming the reader with a load of theory from the off, the author breaks down what you need to do, step by step, explaining why at every point – giving the information context, and making it more interesting and memorable. He has trained students in this subject for years, and here he’s able to use his experiences of what works, and what are the common pitfalls – he even includes a troubleshooting chapter near the end, going through errors commonly made, and how to spot them. The objective is that readers will finish the book not only knowing what to do, but really understanding why, and being able to make sense of it all again later (rather than just getting through and exam and finding themselves at a loss when on deck). The author also includes time-tested ‘proformas’ – quick reference sheets that sailors can refer to when they come to putting the theory into practice on board, avoiding the terrifying ‘cold start’ that most sailors experience when they suddenly need to put their theoretical knowledge to the test in the real world.

Meteorology can seem like a black art with the meteorologist producing forecasts that seem to contradict what you are reading from the charts. "The Sailor's Book of the Weather" takes the confusion out of the forecasts and helps you answer, 'Why is that happening?'

"The Sailor's Book of the Weather" introduces key principles that influence the weather and gives the sailor the tools to forecast from observations and make the most of the available information. Wind, clouds and knowledge of weather patterns and local conditions all contain ample hints to allow the informed mariner to accurately predict the weather.

Illustrated with charts and over 100 beautiful photographs, this book is a must for anyone who ventures onto the water, whatever your vessel or experience. It should be carried aboard every boat and is essential reading whether you are on the water, in land, on the coast or venturing further afield.

The Battleship USS Iowa (Hardcover): Stefan Draminski The Battleship USS Iowa (Hardcover)
Stefan Draminski 1
R1,144 Discovery Miles 11 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

USS Iowa (BB-61) was the lead ship in one of the most famous classes of battleships ever commissioned into the US Navy. Transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, the Iowa first fired her guns in anger in the Marshall Islands campaign, and sunk her first enemy ship, the Katori. The Iowa went on to serve across a number of pivotal Pacific War campaigns, including at the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. It ended the war spending several months bombarding the Japanese Home Islands before the surrender in August 1945.

After taking part in the Korea War, the Iowa was decommissioned in 1958, before being briefly reactivated in the 1980s as part of President Reagan's 600-Ship Navy Plan. After being decommissioned a second and final time in 1990, the Iowa is now a museum ship in Los Angeles.

This new addition to the Anatomy of the Ship series is illustrated with contemporary photographs, scaled plans of the ship and superb 3D illustrations which bring this historic battleship to life.

The Annapolis Book of Seamanship - Fourth Edition (Hardcover, 4 Rev Ed): John Rousmaniere The Annapolis Book of Seamanship - Fourth Edition (Hardcover, 4 Rev Ed)
John Rousmaniere; Illustrated by Mark Smith 1

"The art of sailing, maneuvering, and preserving a ship or a boat in all positions and under all reasonable circumstances." With the addition of the words, "and some unreasonable circumstances, too," this definition of "seamanship" is as valid today as when the first edition of this book was published in 1983. The aim remains to advise you the sailor on essential gear, skills, and behavior that enhance your pleasure and safety.
This edition of "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship" is an extensive update. Much of the text is new or revised, and there are many new photos. Throughout, the book stresses the skills and attitudes that comprise what the author calls "The Seamanship Ethos." The first four chapters cover the boat, basic sailing skills, sail trim, and weather, with the first of many "Hands On" sections with their tips.
The topics of health (including seasickness) and on board safety follow, with lessons learned from on-water tests and studies of boating accidents. We look closely at the elements of piloting, navigation, and electronics, including Digital Selective Calling, the U.S. Coast Guard's emergency communication system.
Moving on to the arts of traditional seamanship-- anchoring, heavy weather, and emergencies--there is much on modern equipment and skills, again based on experience. The book ends with boat maintenance and the traditions that make sailing the beloved pastime it is. Appendixes include best practices for protecting the marine environment and bringing up children under sail.

R280 R259 Discovery Miles 2 590 Save R21 (7%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

1970 was a time when there were no GPS’s, no electronic calculators or notebook computers, no communication via VHF or SSB radios and satellite phones, no accurate quartz watches, no access to weather forecasts, no EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacons), no lightweight small-boat refrigeration, no water makers, no disposable napkins (except cotton wool wadding), no yellow margarine and only limited dehydrated foods. At that time, a young Johannesburg couple fulfil a dream adventure in a 25-foot yacht.

This is a story of survival at sea, a husband's resourcefulness in the face of huge difficulties, running out of food and water and an amazing reunion with the author's Danish roots. It reaches a climax when they have a baby and decide to return to South Africa when he was just four months old. The wooden sloop’s voyage of 23,000 nautical sea miles concluded with the return to South African shores after a 53 day passage in the Southern Ocean.

The story is a faithful rendition of the author’s log and letters which allow the reader to step back into the past and relive the thoughts, feelings, fears and faith of a young wife, mother and sailor.
