This book offers a health-oriented, integrative approach to adolescent group therapy. George R. Holmes and his associates believe that promoting social competency in each adolescent group member is central to successful therapy. The enablement of interpersonal skills neutralizes the environmentally sponsored psychopathology that adolescents use to survive. The authors also emphasize the co-therapy relationship. They offer recommendations for supervising trainee therapists and for applying their model to other contexts, such as high schools. The authors discuss strategies developed in their clinical work, covering such issues as scapegoating, silence, and withdrawal. They explore how processes, roles, and meaningful issues change over the life of the group. Social competency should be the main focus, they argue: it is essential to nurturing self-parenting skills and a healthy identity. The co-therapy relationship--the interaction between co-therapists and among co-therapists and group members--also greatly determines therapeutic change. The book includes recommendations for supervising trainee therapists and for applying this model to other contexts, such as high schools. African American males have never fared as poorly as they do
currently on a number of social indicators. They are less likely to
complete high school than their white male and female or African
American female peers, they are more likely to exhibit depressive
symptoms, and they have fewer sanctioned coping strategies.
Arguably, no other group in American society has been more
maligned, regularly faced with tremendous odds that uniquely
threaten their existence. When they do receive education, mental
health, and physical health services, it is often in correctional
settings. They are marginalized in public policies on secondary and
higher education attainment, marriage and parental expectations,
public welfare, health, housing, and community development. Yet
they remain overlooked in health and social science research and
are stereotyped in the popular media.
Based on the presentations and discussions from a national
symposia, "Just Living Together" represents one of the first
systematic efforts to focus on cohabitation. The book is divided
into four parts, each dealing with a different aspect of
cohabitation. Part I addresses the big picture question, "What are
the historical and cross cultural foundations of cohabitation?"
Part II focuses specifically on North America and asks, "What is
the role of cohabitation in contemporary North American family
structure?" Part III turns the focus to the question, "What is the
long- and short-term impact of cohabitation on child well-being?"
Part IV addresses how cohabiting couples are affected by current
policies and what policy innovations could be introduced to support
these couples.
Within the field of psychology, community psychology specifically challenges traditional ways of thinking by considering people as embedded in ecological systems. It also recognizes that the links between persons and settings may be as important as either factor alone. The National Science Foundation funded the first Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology initiative to look at systems that support collaborations in business and elsewhere. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.
