Data Communications and their Performance - Proceedings of the Sixth IFIP WG6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks,... Data Communications and their Performance - Proceedings of the Sixth IFIP WG6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks, Istanbul, Turkey, 1995 (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Serge Fdida, Raif O. Onvural
R5,373 Discovery Miles 53 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the sixth conference in the series which started in 1981 in Paris, followed by conferences held in Zurich (1984), Rio de Janeirio (1987), Barcelona (1991), and Raleigh (1993). The main objective of this IFIP conference series is to provide a platform for the exchange of recent and original contributions in communications systems in the areas of performance analysis, architectures, and applications. There are many exiciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in Asynchronous Transfer Mode.(ATM), multimedia services, and high speed protocols. It is commonly believed in the communications industry that ATM represents the next generation of networking. Yet, there are a number of issues that has been worked on in various standards bodies, government and industry research and development labs, and universities towards enabling high speed networks in general and ATM networks in particular. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the Sixth IFIP W.G. 6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and proposing various state of the art solutions to a subset of them. The program includes 25 papers selected by the program committee out of 57 papers submitted."

The Wave Finite Element Method (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Boris F. Shorr The Wave Finite Element Method (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Boris F. Shorr
R3,834 Discovery Miles 38 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph presents in detail the novel "wave" approach to finite element modeling of transient processes in solids. Strong discontinuities of stress, deformation, and velocity wave fronts as well as a finite magnitude of wave propagation speed over elements are considered. These phenomena, such as explosions, shocks, and seismic waves, involve problems with a time scale near the wave propagation time. Software packages for 1D and 2D problems yield significantly better results than classical FEA, so some FORTRAN programs with the necessary comments are given in the appendix. The book is written for researchers, lecturers, and advanced students interested in problems of numerical modeling of non-stationary dynamic processes in deformable bodies and continua, and also for engineers and researchers involved designing machines and structures, in which shock, vibro-impact, and other unsteady dynamics and waves processes play a significant role.

Communications After ad2000 (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): D.E.N. Davies, C. Hilsum, A.W. Rudge Communications After ad2000 (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
D.E.N. Davies, C. Hilsum, A.W. Rudge
R4,152 Discovery Miles 41 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Royal Society has initiated a series of meetings to discuss the effect advances in technology will have on our way of life in the next century. The two previous meetings have been concerned with housing and waste treat ment. The subject of the third meeting, communications, is no less critical to life, but it offers particular problems and uncertainties, especially in the forecasting of future trends. Indeed, some have doubted if there can be profitable debate on long-term development in such a fast-moving field. The importance of the topic justifies an attempt, and the reader will judge whether the authors have met the challenge. Communications today bears little resemblance to that of the 1970s. Then we knew about satellites and optical fibres, and we had seen lasers and silicon chips, but most of us could never imagine the potential of the new technologies within our grasp. We had also not assessed the thirst of the popUlation for more and better ways of talking and writing to each other. It was the combination of market need and technical capability that created the com munications revolution."

R6,332 Discovery Miles 63 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last decade parallel computing has been put forward as the only computational answer to the increasing computational needs arising from very large and complex fluid dynamic problems. Considerable efforts are being made to use parallel computers efficiently to solve several fluid dynamic problems originating in aerospace, climate modelling and environmental applications.

Parallel CFD Conferences are international and aim to increase discussion among researchers worldwide.

Topics covered in this particular book include typical CFD areas such as turbulence, Navier-Stokes and Euler solvers, reactive flows, with a good balance between both university and industrial applications. In addition, other applications making extensive use of CFD such as climate modelling and environmental applications are also included.

Anyone involved in the challenging field of Parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics will find this volume useful in their daily work.

High-Resolution Methods for Incompressible and Low-Speed Flows (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): D. Drikakis, W. Rider High-Resolution Methods for Incompressible and Low-Speed Flows (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
D. Drikakis, W. Rider
R5,959 Discovery Miles 59 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The study of incompressible ?ows is vital to many areas of science and te- nology. This includes most of the ?uid dynamics that one ?nds in everyday life from the ?ow of air in a room to most weather phenomena. Inundertakingthesimulationofincompressible?uid?ows, oneoftentakes many issues for granted. As these ?ows become more realistic, the problems encountered become more vexing from a computational point-of-view. These range from the benign to the profound. At once, one must contend with the basic character of incompressible ?ows where sound waves have been analytically removed from the ?ow. As a consequence vortical ?ows have been analytically "preconditioned," but the ?ow has a certain non-physical character (sound waves of in?nite velocity). At low speeds the ?ow will be deterministic and ordered, i.e., laminar. Laminar ?ows are governed by a balance between the inertial and viscous forces in the ?ow that provides the stability. Flows are often characterized by a dimensionless number known as the Reynolds number, which is the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in a ?ow. Laminar ?ows correspond to smaller Reynolds numbers. Even though laminar ?ows are organized in an orderly manner, the ?ows may exhibit instabilities and bifurcation phenomena which may eventually lead to transition and turbulence. Numerical modelling of suchphenomenarequireshighaccuracyandmostimportantlytogaingreater insight into the relationship of the numerical methods with the ?ow physics.

R3,294 Discovery Miles 32 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis, which won one of the six 2015 ATLAS Thesis Awards, concerns the study of the charmonium and bottomonium bound heavy quark bound states. The first section of the thesis describes the observation of a candidate for the chi_b(3P) bottomonium states. This represented the first observation of a new particle at the LHC and its existence was subsequently confirmed by D0 and LHCb experiments. The second part of the thesis presents measurements of the prompt and non-prompt production of the chi_c1 and chi_c2 charmonium states in proton-proton collisions. These measurements are compared to several theoretical predictions and can be used to inform the development of theoretical models of quarkonium production.

R5,398 Discovery Miles 53 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Foreword Looking back the past 30 years. we have seen steady progress made in the area of speech science and technology. I still remember the excitement in the late seventies when Texas Instruments came up with a toy named "Speak-and-Spell" which was based on a VLSI chip containing the state-of-the-art linear prediction synthesizer. This caused a speech technology fever among the electronics industry. Particularly. applications of automatic speech recognition were rigorously attempt ed by many companies. some of which were start-ups founded just for this purpose. Unfortunately. it did not take long before they realized that automatic speech rec ognition technology was not mature enough to satisfy the need of customers. The fever gradually faded away. In the meantime. constant efforts have been made by many researchers and engi neers to improve the automatic speech recognition technology. Hardware capabilities have advanced impressively since that time. In the past few years. we have been witnessing and experiencing the advent of the "Information Revolution." What might be called the second surge of interest to com mercialize speech technology as a natural interface for man-machine communication began in much better shape than the first one. With computers much more powerful and faster. many applications look realistic this time. However. there are still tremendous practical issues to be overcome in order for speech to be truly the most natural interface between humans and machines."

Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Asoke Kumar Nandi Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Asoke Kumar Nandi
R2,810 Discovery Miles 28 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the signal-processing research community, a great deal of progress in higher-order statistics (HOS) began in the mid-1980s. These last fifteen years have witnessed a large number of theoretical developments as well as real applications. Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics focuses on the blind estimation area and records some of the major developments in this field. Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics is a welcome addition to the few books on the subject of HOS and is the first major publication devoted to covering blind estimation using HOS. The book provides the reader with an introduction to HOS and goes on to illustrate its use in blind signal equalisation (which has many applications including (mobile) communications), blind system identification, and blind sources separation (a generic problem in signal processing with many applications including radar, sonar and communications). There is also a chapter devoted to robust cumulant estimation, an important problem where HOS results have been encouraging. Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics is an invaluable reference for researchers, professionals and graduate students working in signal processing and related areas.

Subband and Wavelet Transforms - Design and Applications (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Ali N. Akansu, Mark J.T. Smith Subband and Wavelet Transforms - Design and Applications (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Ali N. Akansu, Mark J.T. Smith
R5,227 Discovery Miles 52 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The scientists and engineers of today are relentless in their continuing study and analysis of the world about us from the microcosm to the macrocosm. A central purpose of this study is to gain sufficient scientific information and insight to enable the development of both representative and useful models of the superabundance of physical processes that surround us. The engineers need these models and the associated insight in order to build the information processing systems and control systems that comprise these new and emerging technologies. Much of the early modeling work that has been done on these systems has been based on the linear time-invariant system theory and its extensive use of Fourier transform theory for both continuous and discrete systems and signals. However many of the signals arising in nature and real systems are neither stationary nor linear but tend to be concentrated in both time and frequency. Hence a new methodology is needed to take these factors properly into account.

Asymptotic Methods in Quantum Mechanics - Application to Atoms, Molecules and Nuclei (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): S. H Patil, K. T... Asymptotic Methods in Quantum Mechanics - Application to Atoms, Molecules and Nuclei (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
S. H Patil, K. T Tang
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Quantum mechanics and the Schrodinger equation are the basis for the de scription of the properties of atoms, molecules, and nuclei. The development of reliable, meaningful solutions for the energy eigenfunctions of these many is a formidable problem. The usual approach for obtaining particle systems the eigenfunctions is based on their variational extremum property of the expectation values of the energy. However the complexity of these variational solutions does not allow a transparent, compact description of the physical structure. There are some properties of the wave functions in some specific, spatial domains, which depend on the general structure of the Schrodinger equation and the electromagnetic potential. These properties provide very useful guidelines in developing simple and accurate solutions for the wave functions of these systems, and provide significant insight into their physical structure. This point, though of considerable importance, has not received adequate attention. Here we present a description of the local properties of the wave functions of a collection of particles, in particular the asymptotic properties when one of the particles is far away from the others. The asymptotic behaviour of this wave function depends primarily on the separation energy of the outmost particle. The universal significance of the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions should be appreciated at both research and pedagogic levels. This is the main aim of our presentation here."

Bishnu S Atal, Vladimir Cuperman, Allen Gersho
R5,298 Discovery Miles 52 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications contains 34 chapters, loosely grouped into six topical areas. The chapters in this volume reflect the progress and present the state of the art in low-bit-rate speech coding, primarily at bit rates from 2.4 kbit/s to 16 kbit/s. Together they represent important contributions from leading researchers in the speech coding community. Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications contains contributions describing technologies that are under consideration as standards for such applications as digital cellular communications (the half-rate American and European coding standards). A brief Introduction is followed by a section dedicated to low-delay speech coding, a research direction which emerged as a result of the CCITT requirement for a universal low-delay 16 kbit/s speech coding technology and now continues with the objective of achieving toll quality with moderate delay at a rate of 8 kbit/s. A section on the important topic of speech quality evaluation is then presented. This is followed by a section on speech coding for wireless transmission, and a section on audio coding which covers not only 7 kHz bandwidth speech, but also wideband coding applicable to high fidelity music. The book concludes with a section on speech coding for noisy transmission channels, followed by a section addressing future research directions. Speech and Audio Coding for Wireless and Network Applications presents a cross-section of the key contributions in speech and audio coding which have emerged recently. For this reason, the book is a valuable reference for all researchers and graduate students in the speech coding community.

Nonlinear Digital Filters - Principles and Applications (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): Ioannis Pitas, Anastasios N. Venetsanopoulos Nonlinear Digital Filters - Principles and Applications (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
Ioannis Pitas, Anastasios N. Venetsanopoulos
R4,230 Discovery Miles 42 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The function of a filter is to transform a signal into another one more suit able for a given purpose. As such, filters find applications in telecommunica tions, radar, sonar, remote sensing, geophysical signal processing, image pro cessing, and computer vision. Numerous authors have considered deterministic and statistical approaches for the study of passive, active, digital, multidimen sional, and adaptive filters. Most of the filters considered were linear although the theory of nonlinear filters is developing rapidly, as it is evident by the numerous research papers and a few specialized monographs now available. Our research interests in this area created opportunity for cooperation and co authored publications during the past few years in many nonlinear filter families described in this book. As a result of this cooperation and a visit from John Pitas on a research leave at the University of Toronto in September 1988, the idea for this book was first conceived. The difficulty in writing such a mono graph was that the area seemed fragmented and no general theory was available to encompass the many different kinds of filters presented in the literature. However, the similarities of some families of nonlinear filters and the need for such a monograph providing a broad overview of the whole area made the pro ject worthwhile. The result is the book now in your hands, typeset at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Toronto during the summer of 1989."

Mathematical and Physical Theory of Turbulence, Volume 250 (Hardcover): John Cannon, Bhimsen Shivamoggi Mathematical and Physical Theory of Turbulence, Volume 250 (Hardcover)
John Cannon, Bhimsen Shivamoggi
R6,329 Discovery Miles 63 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although the current dynamical system approach offers several important insights into the turbulence problem, issues still remain that present challenges to conventional methodologies and concepts. These challenges call for the advancement and application of new physical concepts, mathematical modeling, and analysis techniques. Bringing together experts from physics, applied mathematics, and engineering, Mathematical and Physical Theory of Turbulence discusses recent progress and some of the major unresolved issues in two- and three-dimensional turbulence as well as scalar compressible turbulence.

Containing introductory overviews as well as more specialized sections, this book examines a variety of turbulence-related topics. The authors concentrate on theory, experiments, computational, and mathematical aspects of Navier-Stokes turbulence; geophysical flows; modeling; laboratory experiments; and compressible/magnetohydrodynamic effects. The topics discussed in these areas include finite-time singularities and inviscid dissipation energy; validity of the idealized model incorporating local isotropy, homogeneity, and universality of small scales of high Reynolds numbers, Lagrangian statistics, and measurements; and subrigid-scale modeling and hybrid methods involving a mix of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), large-eddy simulations (LES), and direct numerical simulations (DNS).

By sharing their expertise and recent research results, the authoritative contributors in Mathematical and Physical Theory of Turbulence promote further advances in the field, benefiting applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers involved in understanding the complex issues of the turbulenceproblem.

Statistical Hydrodynamic Models for Developed Mixing Instability Flows - Analytical "0D" Evaluation Criteria, and Comparison of Single-and Two-Phase Flow Approaches (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Antoine Llor
R1,961 R1,598 Discovery Miles 15 980 Save R363 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Part textbook, part exploratory work, this book aims to raise the awareness of students, physicists, and engineers in turbulence on the modeling of gravitationally induced turbulent mixing flows as produced, for instance, by Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. The discussion is centered on the differences between single-fluid and two-fluid approaches, and it is illustrated with a 0D analysis of two specific elementary models in common use. Important deviations are shown to appear on many features, among others the prominence of directed energy, the simultaneous restitution of test cases, the responses to variable acceleration and shocks, and the behavior of various length scales.

W.Kenneth Jenkins, Andrew W. Hull, Jeffrey C. Strait, Bernard A. Schnaufer, Xiaohui Li
R4,181 Discovery Miles 41 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Although adaptive filtering and adaptive array processing began with research and development efforts in the late 1950's and early 1960's, it was not until the publication of the pioneering books by Honig and Messerschmitt in 1984 and Widrow and Stearns in 1985 that the field of adaptive signal processing began to emerge as a distinct discipline in its own right. Since 1984 many new books have been published on adaptive signal processing, which serve to define what we will refer to throughout this book as conventional adaptive signal processing. These books deal primarily with basic architectures and algorithms for adaptive filtering and adaptive array processing, with many of them emphasizing practical applications. Most of the existing textbooks on adaptive signal processing focus on finite impulse response (FIR) filter structures that are trained with strategies based on steepest descent optimization, or more precisely, the least mean square (LMS) approximation to steepest descent. While literally hundreds of archival research papers have been published that deal with more advanced adaptive filtering concepts, none of the current books attempt to treat these advanced concepts in a unified framework. The goal of this new book is to present a number of important, but not so well known, topics that currently exist scattered in the research literature. The book also documents some new results that have been conceived and developed through research conducted at the University of Illinois during the past five years.

Numerical Modeling of Sea Waves (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Dmitry V. Chalikov Numerical Modeling of Sea Waves (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Dmitry V. Chalikov
R4,099 Discovery Miles 40 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presenting a novel approach to wave theory, this book applies mathematical modeling to the investigation of sea waves. It presents problems, solutions and methods, and explores issues such as statistical properties of sea waves, generation of turbulence, Benjamin-Feir instability and the development of wave fields under the action of wind. Special attention is paid to the processes of dynamic wind-wave interaction, the formation of freak waves, as well as the role that sea waves play in the dynamic ocean/atmosphere system. It presents theoretical results which are followed by a description of the algorithms used in the development of wave forecasting models, and provides illustrations to assist understanding of the various models presented. This book provides an invaluable resource to oceanographers, specialists in fluid dynamics and advanced students interested in investigation of the widely known but poorly investigated phenomenon of sea waves.
