School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment - New Roles, Responsibilities, and Educational Enrichment (Hardcover):... School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment - New Roles, Responsibilities, and Educational Enrichment (Hardcover)
Paul R. Keys
R2,092 Discovery Miles 20 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment is a new approach for creating diversity in classroom and field curricula. The contributing authors offer practical advice for the effective teaching of multicultural content, which is now a requirement in the Curriculum Standards of the Council on Social Work Education. The authors address existing fears some readers may have regarding the teaching of multicultural content in social work and provide educators and field instructors with a model for overcoming these fears and for creating classroom excellence. Multicultural Education offers educators a chance to explore how to implement the required material effectively. While offering guidance to educators, School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment focuses on fundamental and controversial approaches to multicultural social work education by answering these questions: Do educators know how to teach multicultural social work content? Where should multicultural content be taught? Should schools offer courses or workshops to facilitate faculty development? How should schools monitor multicultural outcomes? In what way should content be evaluated--peer evaluation, formal teaching observations, or other methods?School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment, written by experienced educators, field instructors, and practitioners, provides advice on the teaching of multicultural social work content in both urban and rural areas and among many different populations. The book examines in depth the unspoken myths and fears encountered in teaching multiculturalism to students and helps educators and curriculum planners avoid common, unfortunate mistakes often made in multicultural classrooms and field instruction. Topics discussed include: Student Learning Processes for Multicultural Content Classroom-Tested Teaching Strategies for Cultural Competence in Practice Classes A Model for Measuring Multicultural Outcomes Perceived Racism and Minority Student Retention Differing Student and Educator Perceptions in Field Instruction Field Instruction Strategies for Successfully Teaching Cultural, Ethnic, Gender, Class, and Age Characteristics Rural Diversity Education Strategies American Indian Social Work Student Issues Human services educators and curriculum planners, who must effectively teach and implement multiculturalism in their programs, will find School Social Workers in the Multicultural Environment leads the way in creating classroom excellence. It stresses the importance of creating a new model for teaching and practice, for students and educators.

Human Rights Educ & Global R (Hardcover): James Lynch, Celia Modgil, Sohan Modgil Human Rights Educ & Global R (Hardcover)
James Lynch, Celia Modgil, Sohan Modgil
R5,541 Discovery Miles 55 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

One of the major problems facing societies, in almost all parts of the world, is the inadequate accommodation of social equity with cultural diversity. The crisis emanating from neglect of this issue can be seen in all societies. The lack of discourse between the two systems, cultural and social, means that there are fewer shared ideologies, on the basis of which accommodations can be negotiated. The inadequacy of those responses is the issue addressed by this series of books. It seeks to contribute, through joint publication and the stimulation of greater discourse, to identify the pathways to a less selfish and parochial response to the continuing dilemma of equity and diversity. In this fourth volume there are two major foci within the field of education and schooling; human rights and global responsibilities. The authors review, critically discuss and seek to extend the theoretical and ideological assumptions, underlying policy and practice in their chosen field, within the context of these two foci. The aim of their testimony is to place the life experience of teachers and children within a more globally responsible and world-sensitive context, drawing out the connections betw

Student Motivation in English-Medium Instruction - Empirical Studies in a Japanese University (Paperback): Naoko Kojima Student Motivation in English-Medium Instruction - Empirical Studies in a Japanese University (Paperback)
Naoko Kojima
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores Japanese students' learning experiences and challenges in English medium instruction (EMI) from motivational perspectives. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as the framework, the first part reveals a lack of the three psychological needs of SDT (autonomy, competence, relatedness) that cause loss of students' initial interest in learning English language and content. The author outlines pedagogical interventions that can be implemented in order to make the learning environment better. The second half of the book shows the effects these interventions had on the fulfillment of the three psychological needs, especially perceived relatedness and autonomy. In conclusion, the author focuses on the importance of listening to Japanese students' voices and building a community that can motivate students, thus maximizing the pedagogical effectiveness of EMI. This volume will be useful to anyone involved in motivation, language learning or EMI research, pedagogy or practice.

Roberta S. Sigel, Marilyn B. Hoskin
R4,019 Discovery Miles 40 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is becoming increasingly clear that members of a host nation as well as newcomers have to learn what it means to live democratically in a multi-ethnic world and to accept diversity without fear or rancor. This volume, a result of a conference sponsored by the Spencer Foundation, asks a question of increasing significance in view of post World War II immigration patterns and the spread of democratic forms of government: "What can educational researchers and practitioners do to prepare our youth for cooperative, constructive living in a democracy?" This book illustrates how six post-industrial nations -- Canada, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States -- have met or failed to meet this challenge.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have been adopted by most states in the United States, and mathematics educators must attend to this widespread adoption and implementation. This book addresses the gap reflected in the statement, "It is also beyond the scope of the Standards to define the full range of supports appropriate for English language learners." This collection of pedagogical practices supports English language learners with the content and language demands of the CCSS for Mathematics. Each chapter highlights, via detailed classroom-based vignettes, specific pedagogical practices that teachers can use to support English language learners with the Standards for Mathematical Practices, and each concludes with questions for reflection and suggestions for action plans.

Black Students and School Failure - Policies, Practices, and Prescriptions (Hardcover): Jacqueline J. Irvine Black Students and School Failure - Policies, Practices, and Prescriptions (Hardcover)
Jacqueline J. Irvine
R1,935 Discovery Miles 19 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research findings by the National Commission on Excellence, the Children's Defense Fund, and the College Board, among others, suggest that much work remains to be done to upgrade the educational experience and performance of the fastest growing segment of the American school population, blacks and other minorities. This country's survival and strength will ultimately depend on the quality of education given to this important group that has been systematically and effectively excluded from the benefits of educational opportunity. Without these benefits, blacks and other minorities will never achieve economic independence, and the self-perpetuating cycle of poor school achievement, poverty, and teen parenthood will grind on relentlessly. This important study addresses the many facets of this complex problem by explicating its many roots, assessing strengths and weaknesses inherent in the present system, and proposing strategies for dynamic changes. Chapter 1 reviews various societal prescriptions regarding education and descriptive practices harmful to black students and uncovers a "hidden" curriculum. The focus of Chapter 2 is on cultural synchronization in style, language, and cognition and on how disappearing black educators increase the lack of synchronization. Chapters 3 and 4 detail the effects of teacher expectations in various contexts including grade level, subject, and time of year, and present a thorough research study of teacher-student interactions. The last two chapters outline strategies for change and implications for training and staff development exploring Afro-centric responses, parent involvement, relevant research findings, and various staff development competenciesfor policy development and prejudice reduction. The detailed introductory essay, the seven tables and five figures, and an appendix that provides supplemental information describing the research study methodology in Chapter 4 complete this valuable volume. Scholars and students of Afro-American and African Studies, as well as educational administrators and practitioners will find this work both timely and provocative.

This book explores the journey of a group of teachers in a secondary school as they work to change the ESL program for immigrants in their school. As this group of teachers worked to create a program that supported their students' home languages and "funds of knowledge," structures within the school, and Discourses from other teachers, administrators, and the nation/community both constrained/enabled the teachers to create an equitable learning environment.

Storytelling in a Culturally Responsive Classroom - Opening Minds, Shifting Perspectives, and Transforming Imaginations... Storytelling in a Culturally Responsive Classroom - Opening Minds, Shifting Perspectives, and Transforming Imaginations (Paperback)
Laura A Mitchell
R1,085 Discovery Miles 10 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The authentic, storytelling process gives students the opportunity to include their heritage language and culture into the learning process at school. Often, students separate their heritage language and culture from the school culture. They do this in order to survive the complexity of living in dual worlds or perspectives (Belenky et al., 1986). When teachers integrate the heritage language, such as storytelling, into the authentic literacy processes, students find that their heritage language and culture has value. They discover that their teachers encourage the traditional storytelling of their own heritage stories in the classrooms among their classmates. This brings the dual perspective of living in two distinct worlds together. The culturally responsive teachers help to merge both the home and school culture together through authentic literacy. This book describes how culturally responsive teachers learn to navigate between the heritage languages of their students and the dominant language of their curriculum and instruction. They know to ask questions such as, "Who are the storytellers in your home and what stories do they tell you?" This form of questioning opens up the thinking process that shows literacy comes in more forms and processes than just a book. As culturally responsive teachers invite different forms of literacy to be shared in the classroom, they bring the authentic lives of storytellers into their classroom. The students can retell the stories that they were told by their storytellers. Through this storytelling process both the culturally responsive teachers and the students informs them about who they are, how they are connect with others, and how they interdependent on others. Students tell stories that inform them about who they are and how they are connected with others, so they will know that they are human. They can live in a world of possibilities where they are interconnected with literacy and interdependent with each other in order to be human. They are describing what Greene (1995) described as looking into each other's eyes in order to encourage them to tell their stories about who they are and who they hope to be.

Glenn Stockwell
R2,966 Discovery Miles 29 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The increased use of sophisticated mobile devices opens up new possibilities and challenges for language teachers and learners, which has led to an increasing need to consider issues relating to mobile technologies specifically. This book fills that gap, providing a resource for present and future language teachers, and for graduate students of applied linguistics and TESOL, to understand how mobile devices can best be used for language teaching. It is founded on existing research, practice and theory, and offers a balanced perspective, based on the author's own experiences with mobile learning - considering the limitations of such an approach, as well as the benefits. Written in a practical and approachable tone, it provides a much-needed guide to MALL, and its fascinating insights promote further debate within the field.

Language, Power and Pedagogy - Bilingual Children in the Crossfire (Paperback): Jim Cummins Language, Power and Pedagogy - Bilingual Children in the Crossfire (Paperback)
Jim Cummins
R818 Discovery Miles 8 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Population mobility is at an all-time high in human history. One result of this unprecedented movement of peoples around the world is that in many school systems monolingual and monocultural students are the exception rather than the rule, particularly in urban areas. This shift in demographic realities entails enormous challenges for educators and policy-makers. What do teachers need to know in order to teach effectively in linguistically and culturally diverse contexts? How long does it take second language learners to acquire proficiency in the language of school instruction? What are the differences between attaining conversational fluency in everyday contexts and developing proficiency in the language registers required for academic success? What adjustments do we need to make in curriculum, instruction and assessment to ensure that second-language learners understand what is being taught and are assessed in a fair and equitable manner? How long do we need to wait before including second-language learners in high-stakes national examinations and assessments? What role (if any) should be accorded students' first language in the curriculum? Do bilingual education programs work well for poor children from minority-language backgrounds or should they be reserved only for middle-class children from the majority or dominant group? In addressing these issues, this volume focuses not only on issues of language learning and teaching but also highlights the ways in which power relations in the wider society affect patterns of teacher-student interaction in the classroom. Effective instruction will inevitably challenge patterns of coercive power relations in both school and society.

Using the metaphor of the Hydra monster from ancient Greek mythology, it explores the use and misuse of English in a wide range of contexts, revealing how the dominance of English is being confronted and counteracted around the globe. The authors explore the language policy challenges for governments and education systems at all levels, and show how changing the role of English can lead to greater success in education for a larger proportion of children. Through personal accounts, poems, essays and case studies, the book calls for greater efforts to ensure the maintenance of the world's linguistic and cultural diversity.
