Breast Cancer and the Post-Surgical Body - Recovering the Self (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): S Crompvoets Breast Cancer and the Post-Surgical Body - Recovering the Self (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
S Crompvoets
R1,505 Discovery Miles 15 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Surgical breast reconstruction is seen by many women as the only procedure that will ultimately enable transcendence of the temporary, mastectomized state and facilitate rehabilitation of their 'true', familiar, embodied self. Unlike other texts examining breast cancer experience, this book argues that this self-understanding is profoundly influenced by breast cancer culture and the medicalization of the post-surgical body. In addition the research establishes a strong link between, on the one hand, the personal feelings and actions of women with breast cancer, and on the other, powerful discourses and practices of the breast cancer movement.

Personality Structure and Human Interaction - The Developing Synthesis of Psychodynamic Theory (Hardcover): Harry Y. Guntrip Personality Structure and Human Interaction - The Developing Synthesis of Psychodynamic Theory (Hardcover)
Harry Y. Guntrip
R3,911 Discovery Miles 39 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How has a theory of man as a social being to be formulated if we are to do justice to his individuality, to the subtle ways in which his love and hate compete within his relations with others and to the anxieties and resistances he shows when he seeks to change himself? To answer this question is the task which the author sets himself. After assessing Freud's basic principles, the author proceeds to make a uniquely comprehensive review of subsequent theoretical contributions to psychoanalysis with special emphasis on the work of Fairbairn and Melanie Klein. From a background of philosophy, theology and social studies, the author went on to take a personal psychoanalysis and to become a full time psychotherapist, and it is from this combination of wide knowledge and intensive work with people beset by conflicts in their relations with themselves and others that he evolves his views.

Personality Assessment in America - A Retrospective on the Occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Society for Personality... Personality Assessment in America - A Retrospective on the Occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Society for Personality Assessment (Paperback)
Edwin I. Megargee, Charles D. Spielberger
R896 Discovery Miles 8 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Whereas most psychology books discuss current or future trends, this one focuses on the past. It consists of a collection of important and historically significant writings by a select group of men and women who, over the past 50 years, were honored by their colleagues for their distinguished contributions to the field of personality assessment. Published from 1939 through 1989, most of the papers were SPA Presidential addresses or presentations by the recipients of the Society's Distinguished Contributions Award. Taken as a whole, they provide a unique perspective on the evolution of personality assessment in America from the perspective of those who have made important contributions to that history. The writings are not merely of historical interest, but intrinsically important scientific contributions, some of which were in danger of being lost or forgotten. The editors feel it is important to preserve and pass on this valuable legacy for the education and edification of later generations. It is not only its historical perspective that makes this book unique. This book provides first-hand discussions of crucial issues in personality assessment written by the gifted men and women who were actually grappling with these problems at the time, without knowing what the outcomes would be. Readers will find that these papers provide insights not only into the conflicts and controversies, but also into the ideas, attitudes, and emotions of the men and women who took part in them.

Key Thinkers in Individual Differences - Ideas on Personality and Intelligence (Paperback): Alex Forsythe Key Thinkers in Individual Differences - Ideas on Personality and Intelligence (Paperback)
Alex Forsythe
R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Key Thinkers in Individual Differences introduces the life, work and thought of 25 of the most influential figures who have shaped and developed the measurement of intelligence and personality. Expanding on from a resume of academic events, this book makes sense of these psychologists by bringing together not only their ideas but the social experiences, loves and losses that moulded them. By adapting a chronological approach, Forsythe presents the history and context behind these thinkers, ranging from the buffoonery and sheer genius of Charles Galton, the theatre of Hans Eysenck and John Phillipe Rushton, to the much-maligned and overlooked work of women such as Isabel Myers, Katherine Briggs and Karen Horney. Exploring all through a phenomenological lens, the background, interconnections, controversies and conversations of these thinkers are uncovered. This informative guide is essential reading to anyone who studies, works in or is simply captivated by the field of individual differences, personality and intelligence. An invaluable resource for all students of individual differences and the history of psychology.

Fieldnotes from a Depth Psychological Exploration of Evil - From Chinggis Khan to Carl Jung (Paperback): Robin L. Gordon Fieldnotes from a Depth Psychological Exploration of Evil - From Chinggis Khan to Carl Jung (Paperback)
Robin L. Gordon
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In Fieldnotes from a Depth Psychological Exploration of Evil, Robin L. Gordon presents an accessible account of an attempt to define and understand the nature of evil. Gordon takes on the role of guide to this confusing land, tying together threads of Jungian theory, philosophy, etymology, neuroscience and history, as we are led on a personal journey of discovery. Gordon begins by analysing what a twelfth-century meeting between Chinggis Khan and Taoist priest Ch'ang-Ch'un can tell us about the presence of opposing traits and the nature of evil in human beings. We learn what depth psychology has said about evil and the shadow part of our psyches, and examine examples of human behaviour throughout history to understand the etymological, philosophical and historical understandings and definitions of evil. Gordon's own relationship with her work, and the feelings that arise when researching the psychological framework of Nazi doctors, genocide in Rwanda, Bosnia and Syria, and the functionality of serial killers, are interrogated. We then return to Chinggis Khan's and Ch'ang-Ch'un's relationship, attempting to build a real and practical definition of "evil", and assessing their dialogues as a metaphor for Jung's views of the transcendent function. Fieldnotes from a Depth Psychological Exploration of Evil will be essential reading for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian studies, sociology, criminology and philosophy. It will also be a key resource for Jungian analysts and psychotherapists interested in the study of evil and its impact on society and the psyche, as well as anyone investigating and redefining their own meanings of evil, past and present.

Taking the Work Out of Networking - Your Guide to Making and Keeping Great Connections (Paperback): Karen Wickre Taking the Work Out of Networking - Your Guide to Making and Keeping Great Connections (Paperback)
Karen Wickre
R456 R423 Discovery Miles 4 230 Save R33 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"For introverts who panic at the idea of networking, Wickre's book is a deep, calming breath." -Sophia Dembling, author of The Introvert's Way Former Google executive, editorial director of Twitter, self-described introvert, and "the best-connected Silicon Valley figure you've never heard of" (Walt Mossberg, Wall Street Journal), offers networking advice for anyone who has ever canceled a coffee date due to social anxiety. Learn to nurture a vibrant circle of reliable contacts without leaving your comfort zone. Networking has garnered a reputation as a sort of necessary evil. Some people relish the opportunity to boldly work the room, introduce themselves to strangers, and find common career ground-but for many others, the experience is awkward, or even terrifying. The common networking advice for introverts are variations on the theme of overcoming or "fixing" their quiet tendencies. But Karen Wickre is a self-described introvert who has worked in Silicon Valley for thirty years. She shows you how to embrace your quiet nature and "make genuine connections that last, that we can nurture across the world for all kinds of purposes" (Chris Anderson, head of TED). Karen's "embrace your quiet side" approach is for anyone who finds themselves shying away from traditional networking activities, or for those who would rather be curled up with a good book on a Friday night than out at a party. With compelling arguments and creative strategies, this "practical, easy-to-use" (Sree Sreenivasan, former chief digital officer of Columbia University) book is a perfect guide.

The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour - Speech of the Suffering Soul (Hardcover): Chris Steed The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour - Speech of the Suffering Soul (Hardcover)
Chris Steed
R4,169 Discovery Miles 41 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour is an innovative conceptualisation of how the quest for a high self-worth works as a psychosocial dynamic, presenting the idea that feelings of impotence and low self-esteem induce a powerful impetus on negative human action. This book gives an account of what it means to base a whole psychological perspective on high value, which has been an understudied aspect of human action. Employing an ethnographical approach, the book uses client observations and social research to promote original solutions in an empathetic and engaging manner for psychological support services aiding isolated individuals. It considers the concept of a valuable self and examines the negative effects within the personality which can be generated when this drive for a valuable self is blocked through human devaluation or violence. The Significance of High Value in Human Behaviour will appeal to academics and post-graduate students in the fields of psychology and psychotherapy, psychotherapists with specialist interests in loneliness and self-worth, and sociologists concerned with the psychology of the self.

Some Personality Determinants of the Effects of Participation (Hardcover): Victor H. Vroom Some Personality Determinants of the Effects of Participation (Hardcover)
Victor H. Vroom
R2,961 Discovery Miles 29 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Originally published in 1960, this study was carried out as part of the research of the Organizational Behavior and Human Relations Program of the Institute of Social Research. The primary purpose was to determine the effects of participation in decision-making on people with different personality characteristics. It was hypothesized that equalitarians and individuals with strong independence needs would be more positively affected by the opportunity to participate in making decisions than authoritarians and people with weaker independence needs. The results, based on data derived in an actual industrial setting, confirmed the hypothesis. The theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.

Explorations into the Self - The Library of Analytical Psychology (Hardcover): Michael Fordham Explorations into the Self - The Library of Analytical Psychology (Hardcover)
Michael Fordham
R3,882 Discovery Miles 38 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This rewarding work is the product of sustained observation of and reflection on phenomena arising out of three broad topics in the field of analytical psychology. Firstly it analyses and evaluates the ambiguity in Jung's definitions and metaphors about the self, while at the same time expounding the theory of the self as a dynamic system, evolving through deintegration and reintegration processes during early infancy and childhood. Secondly it investigates the relation of the ego to the self, giving notable consideration to psychoanalytic work. Finally the presence of the self, behind or within both the religious and the alchemical experience, is explored. Fordham's innovative and original view of the self further extends our understanding of its dynamics and helps to establish some sense of the complementariness as well as differences between Jung and Klein.

Intersubjective Self Psychology - A Primer (Hardcover): George Hagman, Harry Paul, Peter B. Zimmermann Intersubjective Self Psychology - A Primer (Hardcover)
George Hagman, Harry Paul, Peter B. Zimmermann
R3,869 Discovery Miles 38 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Intersubjective Self Psychology: A Primer offers a comprehensive overview of the theory of Intersubjective Self Psychology and its clinical applications. Readers will gain an in depth understanding of one of the most clinically relevant analytic theories of the past half-century, fully updated and informed by recent discoveries and developments in the field of Intersubjectivity Theory. Most importantly, the volume provides detailed chapters on the clinical treatment principles of Intersubjective Self Psychology and their application to a variety of clinical situations and diagnostic categories such as trauma, addiction, mourning, child therapy, couples treatment, sexuality, suicide and sever pathology. This useful clinical tool will support and inform everyday psychotherapeutic work. Retaining Kohut's emphasis on the self and selfobject experience, the book conceptualizes the therapeutic situation as a bi-directional field of needed and dreaded selfobject experiences of both patient and analyst. Through a rigorous application of the ISP model, each chapter sheds light on the complex dynamic field within which self-experience and selfobject experience of patient and analyst/therapist unfold and are sustained. The ISP perspective allows the therapist to focus on the patient's strengths, referred to as the Leading Edge, without neglecting work with the repetitive transferences, or Trailing Edge. This dual focus makes ISP a powerful agent for transformation and growth. Intersubjective Self Psychology provides a unified and comprehensive model of psychological life with specific, practical applications that are clinically informative and therapeutically powerful. The book represents a highly useful resource for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists around the world.

The Psychology of Today's Woman - New Psychoanalytic Visions (Paperback): Toni Bernay, Dorothy Cantor The Psychology of Today's Woman - New Psychoanalytic Visions (Paperback)
Toni Bernay, Dorothy Cantor
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The sexual revolution, oft discussed in the journalistic literature of recent years, has brought in its wake a host of questions that are only beginning to be addressed. How are women coping with "real world" challenges for which they may be ill prepared, both socially and psychologically? How successfully are they integrating old and new ego ideals in forging new identities? Is their ostensible "liberation" actually making for a sense of integration and wholeness? The Psychology of Today's Woman: New Psychoanalytic Visions probes these and related questions from the standpoint of both developmental and therapeutic concerns. Taking Freud's notion of female sexuality as a point of departure, editors Bernay and Cantor have compiled a collection of original essays that reassesses traditional conceptions of female psychology (Section I), proffers new visions of femininity (Section II), and explores critical situations in the lives of contemporary women (Section III). A final section of the book, of special interest to analysts and psychotherapists, examines the various facets of the clinical treatment of women. Collectively, the contributors to this volume articulate a strong challenge to the "deficiency model" of female identity that has long dominated psychoanalytic theory. More impressively still, they offer constructive alternatives to the preconceptions of the past. They converge in the belief that the richness and diversity of female experience cannot be encompassed in the overly simplified definitions and "masculine" analogizing of classical analysis. Whether we investigate the status of "masculinity" and "femininity" as personality traits, the relationship between "nurturance" and "aggression" in female identity, or the meaning of "normality" and "pathology" in treatment situations, we are very much in a realm of multiple truths in which the formulas of the past give little sense of the options of the present or the possibilities of the future.

Teamwork and the Bottom Line - Groups Make A Difference (Paperback): Ned Rosen Teamwork and the Bottom Line - Groups Make A Difference (Paperback)
Ned Rosen
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is based on extensive research findings and the author's observation that successful managers are people who understand the dynamics of group interaction and can use that understanding effectively to motivate members of their group to achieve important goals. Blending theory, research, and practice, the book emphasizes a "management through teamwork" strategy in task groups that increases both the quality and quantity of goods and services, improves decision making, and is beneficial to their members. While closely linked to a large body of applied research evidence, Teamwork and the Bottom Line makes liberal use of examples drawn from business oriented publications and from the author's experiences in manufacturing, service, sales, information systems, health care, and other work environments. It includes numerous ideas that can help managers become more secure in their current roles by developing a more complete knowledge base about potential "change levers."

Virtually You - The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality (Paperback): Elias Aboujaoude Virtually You - The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality (Paperback)
Elias Aboujaoude
R573 Discovery Miles 5 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the Internet can enhance well-being, Elias Aboujaoude has spent years treating patients whose lives have been profoundly disturbed by it. Part of the danger lies in how the Internet allows us to act with exaggerated confidence, sexiness, and charisma. Aboujaoude dubs this new self our "e-personality" and argues that its traits are too potent to be confined online. Offline, too, we're becoming impatient, unfocused, and urge-driven. Virtually You draws from Aboujaoude's personal and professional experience to highlight this new phenomenon. The first scrutiny of the virtual world's transformative power on our psychology, Virtually You demonstrates how real life is being reconfigured in the image of a chat room, and how our identity increasingly resembles that of our avatar.

Emotion Regulation and Well-Being (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Ivan Nyklicek, Ad Vingerhoets, Marcel Zeelenberg Emotion Regulation and Well-Being (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Ivan Nyklicek, Ad Vingerhoets, Marcel Zeelenberg
R4,550 Discovery Miles 45 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emotion is a basic phenomenon of human functioning, most of the time having an adaptive value enhancing our effectiveness in pursuing our goals in the broadest sense. Regulation of these emotions, however, is essential for adaptive functioning, and suboptimal or dysfunctional emotion regulation may even be counterproductive and result in adverse consequences, including a poor well-being and ill health. This volume provides a state-of-the art overview of issues related to the association between emotion regulation and both mental and physical well-being. It covers various areas of research highly relevant to both researchers in the field and clinicians working with emotion regulation issues in their practice. Included topics are arranged along four major areas: * (Neuro-)biological processes involved in the generation and regulation of emotions * Psychological processes and mechanisms related to the link between emotion regulation and psychological well-being as well as physical health * Social perspective on emotion regulation pertaining to well-being and social functioning across the life span * Clinical aspects of emotion regulation and specific mental and physical health problems This broad scope offers the possibility to include research findings and thought-provoking views of leading experts from different fields of research, such as cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, psychophysiology, social psychology, and psychiatry on specific topics such as nonconscious emotion regulation, emotional body language, self-control, rumination, mindfulness, social sharing, positive emotions, intergroup emotions, and attachment in their relation to well-being and health. Chapters are based on the "Fourth International Conference on the (Non) Expression of Emotions in Health and Disease" held at Tilburg University in October 2007. In 2007 Springer published "Emotion Regulation: Conceptual and Clinical Issues" based on the Third International Conference on the (Non) Expression of Emotion in Health and Disease," held at Tilburg University in October 2003. It is anticipated that, depending on sales, we may continue to publish the advances deriving from this conference.

The Nature of Human Personality (Hardcover): G N M Tyrrell The Nature of Human Personality (Hardcover)
G N M Tyrrell
R2,804 Discovery Miles 28 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For over thirty years G. N. M. Tyrrell devoted himself to the study of psychical phenomena. Originally published in 1954, in his last book, written just before his death, he probes as deeply as possible into the meaning of the results of psychical research. He believes that paranormal phenomena are not isolated occurrences due to the exceptional gifts of a few unusual persons but the result of capacities which all human beings possess, though in widely varying degrees. After an introductory chapter on Psychology and Psychiatry, the chief psychical phenomena - extra-sensory perception, mediumship, apparitions, etc. - are discussed and illustrated. Then follows a general criticism of current attitudes towards the subject. The book ends with two chapters arguing that the normal and paranormal are one and suggesting a pathway to religion.

Inquiring Man - The Psychology of Personal Constructs (3rd Edition) (Hardcover): Don Bannister, Fay Fransella Inquiring Man - The Psychology of Personal Constructs (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
Don Bannister, Fay Fransella
R3,434 Discovery Miles 34 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Originally published in 1986, this was a new and completely updated edition of the book which, since 1970 had introduced a whole generation in English psychology to Kelly's theory of personal constructs. By setting out a broadly designed and experimentally illustrated view of people as self-inventing explorers and interpreters of their world it challenged the 'mechanical man' of orthodox psychology. It proved a source of radically new ideas in psychotherapy, education and industry. This revised edition shows how the theory's professional applications have spread ever wider, while many have realised that personal construct psychology contains, for them, the core of a personal philosophy.

Revival: The Physical Basis of Personality (1931) (Paperback): Charles Rupert Stockard Revival: The Physical Basis of Personality (1931) (Paperback)
Charles Rupert Stockard
R1,839 Discovery Miles 18 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An outcome of the 1930 series of Lane Medical Lectures at Stanford University. To develop the completed personality a long series of interactions between the original basis and the surrounding environment is essential. A discussion of the effects on developing personalities of uniting entire individuals and of transplanting organs and parts leads to a convincing demonstration of the "high improbability of the inheritance of acquired characters." From the chapter on exaggerated deviations from racial types, in which the author treats of dwarfs and giants, we are led into a section on deviations in structural types among various breeds of dogs. The closing chapters treat mainly of the two normal adult types, the dolichocephalic (linear, long-headed) and the brachycephalic (lateral, short-headed), their characteristics, geographic distribution and age modifications. A brief section is devoted to the sex glands, senility and rejuvenation, the author demonstrating that the sex gland rejuvenation idea is based upon an entirely erroneous conception. Man's deviation from his nearest animal relatives, namely, intellectual achievement, has probably been initiated by two evolutionary changes: (1) some mutation which has resulted in the retention of head proportions comparable to those found in the fetal stages of the higher mammals: this gives a disproportionately large cranium and big brain with small facial region as compared to the reverse adult proportions among other mammals; (2) a germinal mutation resulting in an exaggerated prolongation of childhood and the stages of immaturity to more than twenty years, thus extending enormously the learning period of man. There are considerable experimental material, over seventy figures, and a bibliography of 260 titles.

Cognitive and Cultural Influences on Eye Movements (Paperback): Keith Rayner, Deli Shen, Xuejun Bai, Guoli Yan Cognitive and Cultural Influences on Eye Movements (Paperback)
Keith Rayner, Deli Shen, Xuejun Bai, Guoli Yan
R1,287 Discovery Miles 12 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is well-known that cognitive variables influence eye movements during reading. To what extent do cultural differences influence eye movements? This volume contains chapters that examine these two issues. The first half of the volume documents recent research findings with respect to models of eye movement control in reading, eye movements and visual processing, and eye movements during scene perception, search, and mental rotation. The second half of the volume deals with two main cultural issues: eye movements in reading Chinese and cultural influences on eye movements. A number of experts provide overviews of their research findings concerning the topics in the five sections of the volume. Readers interested in eye movements in reading, cognitive influences on eye movements, and cultural influences on eye movements will find the chapters valuable reading. ISBN 978-7-201-06107-8
