Fundamentals of Tribology and Bridging the Gap Between the Macro- and Micro/Nanoscales (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Bharat Bhushan Fundamentals of Tribology and Bridging the Gap Between the Macro- and Micro/Nanoscales (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Bharat Bhushan
R14,778 R8,974 Discovery Miles 89 740 Save R5,804 (39%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The word tribology was fIrst reported in a landmark report by P. Jost in 1966 (Lubrication (Tribology)--A Report on the Present Position and Industry's Needs, Department of Education and Science, HMSO, London). Tribology is the science and technology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices. The popular equivalent is friction, wear and lubrication. The economic impact of the better understanding of tribology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion is known to be immense. Losses resulting from ignorance of tribology amount in the United States alone to about 6 percent of its GNP or about $200 billion dollars per year (1966), and approximately one-third of the world's energy resources in present' use, appear as friction in one form or another. A fundamental understanding of the tribology of the head-medium interface in magnetic recording is crucial to the future growth of the $100 billion per year information storage industry. In the emerging microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry, tribology is also recognized as a limiting technology. The advent of new scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques (starting with the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981) to measure surface topography, adhesion, friction, wear, lubricant-fIlm thickness, mechanical properties all on a micro to nanometer scale, and to image lubricant molecules and the availability of supercomputers to conduct atomic-scale simulations has led to the development of a new fIeld referred to as Microtribology, Nanotribology, or Molecular Tribology (see B. Bhushan, J. N. Israelachvili and U.

Chloride-Induced Steel Corrosion in Concrete Under Service Loads (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Hailong Ye, Chuanqing Fu, Ye Tian,... Chloride-Induced Steel Corrosion in Concrete Under Service Loads (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Hailong Ye, Chuanqing Fu, Ye Tian, Nanguo Jin
R3,020 Discovery Miles 30 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book summarizes the latest advances in understanding chloride ingress and steel corrosion in concrete under service loads. Unlike the existing literature, it focuses specifically on the effect of service loads on chloride-induced durability issues in reinforced concrete structures. It discusses how service loads affect the moisture and chloride penetration rate, corrosion kinetics and rust distribution, as well as the structural performance of concrete components (e.g. beams and columns) in a systematic and hierarchical way. Given its scope, the book is chiefly intended for researchers and industry practitioners in structural engineering, particularly those whose work involves the durability design of concrete structures.

Attachment Structures and Adhesive Secretions in Arachnids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Jonas O. Wolff, Stanislav N. Gorb Attachment Structures and Adhesive Secretions in Arachnids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Jonas O. Wolff, Stanislav N. Gorb
R4,962 Discovery Miles 49 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book surveys attachment structures and adhesive secretions occurring in this class of animals and discusses the relationships between structure, properties, and function in the context of evolutionary trends, and biomimetic potential. Topics comprise mechanical attachment devices, such as clamps, claws, hooks, spines and wraps, as well as hairy and smooth adhesive pads, nano-fibrils, suction cups, and viscid and solidifying adhesives. Attachment is one of the major types of interactions between an organism and its environment. There are numerous studies that deal with this phenomenon in lizards, frogs, insects, barnacles, mussels and echinoderms, but the second largest class of animals, the Arachnida, was highly neglected so far. The authors demonstrated that most arachnid adhesive structures are highly analogous to those of insects and vertebrates, but there are also numerous unique developments with some intriguing working principles. Because arachnid attachment organs have a very strong potential of technological ideas for the development of new materials and systems, inspirations from biology could also be interesting for a broad range of topics in materials and surface engineering.

Physics of Sliding Friction (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Bo N. J. Persson, E. Tosatti Physics of Sliding Friction (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Bo N. J. Persson, E. Tosatti
R8,977 Discovery Miles 89 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The study of sliding friction is one of the oldest problems in physics, and certainly one of the most important from a practical point of view. Low-friction surfaces are in increasingly high demand for high-tech components such as computer storage systems, miniature motors, and aerospace devices. It has been estimated that about 5% of the gross national product in the developed countries is "wasted" on friction and the related wear. In spite of this, remarkable little is understood about the fundamental, microscopic processes responsible for friction and wear. The topic of interfacial sliding has experienced a major burst of in terest and activity since 1987, much of which has developed quite independently and spontaneously. This volume contains contributions from leading scientists on fundamental aspects of sliding friction. Some problems considered are: What is the origin of stick-and-slip motion? What is the origin of the rapid processes taking place within a lub at low sliding velocities? On a metallic surface, is the rication layer electronic or phononic friction the dominating energy dissipation pro cess? What is the role (if any) of self-organized criticality in sliding friction? How thick is the water layer during sliding on ice and snow? These and other questions raised in this book are of course only part ly answered: the topic of sliding friction is still in an early state of development."

Modern Tribology Handbook, Two Volume Set (Hardcover): Bharat Bhushan Modern Tribology Handbook, Two Volume Set (Hardcover)
Bharat Bhushan
R9,232 Discovery Miles 92 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recent research has led to a deeper understanding of the nature and consequences of interactions between materials on an atomic scale. The results have resonated throughout the field of tribology. For example, new applications require detailed understanding of the tribological process on macro- and microscales and new knowledge guides the rational design of material for these applications. A two volume set, the Modern Tribology Handbook reports on the current state-of-the-field as it reflects these developments, including all industrial applications.
In the Modern Tribology Handbook you will get:
o A thorough review of the basic concepts of contact, friction, wear, and lubrication
o Comprehensive coverage of experimental studies
o The fascinating subject of molecular dynamics simulations
o An exploration of both conventional and new tribological materials
o Knowledge of the advantages and limitations of ceramics, diamond-like carbon and related films, and a wide range of coating composites
o A section devoted to industrial components and systems
Conventional tribology has become well established in the past fifty years but few handbooks that exist are dated. The rapid evolution of micro- and nanotribology will cause it to take center stage for the next decade, but much of the new information has not made it into the hands that need to use it. Extensively illustrated and well-researched, the Modern Tribology Handbook gives you comprehensive information on conventional topics and, more importantly, emphasizes all industrial applications, including the fundamentals of the emerging field of micro-and nanotribology.
