Sculthorpe is one of Australia's most prominent composers and is among the most important composers on the international scene. Although he is a distinguished academic and popular lecturer, Sculthorpe does not fit any ready-made category of composer or teacher. In a body of work that so far includes orchestral and chamber music in many genres and mediums, opera and other theater music, songs and choral music, and music for documentary and commercial films, radio, and television, he has established a personal musical style and public presence that have shaped the history of 20th-century music in Australia and the world. Owing to circumstances of place and time--Australia in the 20th century--he has been defining, or redefining, the role of composer for himself and his audiences. This book is a record of Sculthorpe's work and of its reception by composer colleagues, performers, critics, and audiences.
American literary magazines published between 1850 and 1900 were an outlet for numerous creative works, book reviews, and other material. Like Herman Melville, Mark Twain, and Henry James, many of the authors who wrote for these magazines are among the most famous American authors. This index makes readily available for the first time thousands of references to major and minor literary figures and their works. It is also a guide to the many thousands of facts, opinions, and comments on 19th-century American culture that are contained in literary magazines of the period. Alphabetically arranged entries cover roughly a thousand authors, along with topics such as the novel, poetry, drama and theater, Darwinism, women, American literature, and copyright law. During the latter half of the 19th-century, literary magazines flourished in America. Perhaps even more significantly, editors and reviewers doggedly plied their trade of evaluating and criticizing promising new volumes, analyzing trends and movements, and recording the rise and fall of reputations. The Literary Index is the result of combing 11 prominent American literary magazines for every reference to all major and hundreds of minor writers and their works that appeared on the American literary scene in the second half of the 19th century. Brought to light are tens of thousands of references to writers, works, and issues that have never been studied before. This rich source of material drawn from all sections of the magazines-original works, articles, reviews, gossip columns, and correspondence, provides unprecedented access to information on the receptions of major works, the comings and goings of writers and obscure works. The 700 author entries are arranged alphabetically and include citations for some 7000 titles. In addition, there are exhaustive and comprehensive lists of citations for general subjects such as the novel, poetry, drama and theater, American literature, Darwinism, and women, as well as a section on the century-long battle over the passage of an international copyright law. Every aspect of the literary world of late 19th-century America is represented, making this volume an indispensable reference work for scholars.

Between 1936 and 1955, Hollywood significantly changed its portrayal of Hispanics in motion pictures. This change resulted from the demands of the Production Code Administration, which required film makers to eliminate the more offensive stereotypical Hispanic images. This filmography chronicles all of the Hispanic-related films released during this period. The volume includes entries for nearly four thousand films. The entries are arranged in chapters, with each chapter devoted to a single year. Within the chapters, the entries are listed alphabetically by film title. Each entry includes production information, an annotation detailing the film's Hispanic significance, and references to additional materials. The volume concludes with an alphabetical index of film titles, an index of actors and actresses, an index of place names, a general subject index, and an index of songs. The long tradition of Kierkegaard studies has made it impossible for individual scholars to have a complete overview of the vast field of Kierkegaard research. The large and ever increasing number of publications on Kierkegaard in the languages of the world can be simply bewildering even for experienced scholars. The present work constitutes a systematic bibliography which aims to help students and researchers navigate the seemingly endless mass of publications. The volume is divided into two large sections. Part I, which covers Tomes I-V, is dedicated to individual bibliographies organized according to specific language. This includes extensive bibliographies of works on Kierkegaard in some 41 different languages. Part II, which covers Tomes VI-VII, is dedicated to shorter, individual bibliographies organized according to specific figures who are in some way relevant for Kierkegaard. The goal has been to create the most exhaustive bibliography of Kierkegaard literature possible, and thus the bibliography is not limited to any specific time period but instead spans the entire history of Kierkegaard studies.

Geographers is an annual collection of studies on individuals who have made major contributions to the development of geography and geographical thought. Griffel has prepared a valuable guide to German opera that can be used profitably by both scholars and amateur devotees of opera. The main body of the dictionary provides a discussion of about 380 operas composed to a German text. The alphabetically organized entries include information on German premieres, as well as first performances in Britain and the US, brief plot summaries, listings of major roles, and occasional historical and analytical remarks. . . . "Operas in German" will, no doubt, serve as one of the major reference sources for any type of research on German opera. Highly recommended. "Choice" Although a sizable number of opera dictionaries and encyclopedias are available, those devoted to operas in a single language are extremely rare. The present dictionary addresses itself wholly to operas written to a German text. The main body of this dictionary comprises entries on the operas themselves, permitting thorough treatment of some 350 operas. This section is augmented by an appendix of some 800 additional opera titles and annotated listings of composers and librettists. Almost all of the composers represented here were born in German-speaking countries. Among the notable exceptions is the Italian-born Ferruccio Busoni, whose operas were all written to German texts and received premieres in German-speaking cities. Composers such as Kurt Weill who wrote operas in more than one language are represented by their German works only. The operas are listed alphabetically, excluding the article, which is placed at the end of the title. Each entry includes the title, with the English translation and alternate titles in parentheses; descriptive terms as needed; the number of acts; the composer's name; the librettist's name, the original language, and the original source of the text; the date, place, and cast of the first performance; similar information for the first United States and United Kingdom performances, if applicable; a brief plot summary; the main characters with vocal ranges; citations of especially important or noteworthy numbers; additional information such as comments on special musical problems, techniques, or other significant aspects; and other settings of the text, including non-German ones and/or operas involving the same story or characters. The entry also has a bibliography, a discography, and, in the few instances where they are available, information on video recordings. In addition to the aforementioned appendix, this dictionary contains an alphabetical listing of composers with their places and years of birth and death and an index of their operas included in this volume. The third appendix lists librettists and provides information similar to that in the composer appendix. The fourth and fifth appendices provide characters and performers, respectively, included in the main entries. The volume is completed by a bibliography. This first dictionary devoted exclusively to operas in German belongs in the reference section of music libraries and will also be of interest to scholars and aficionados of opera.
Actress Anne Baxter made her Broadway debut at age thirteen and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in films at age twenty-three. The average listener may be unaware of the many links between rock music and the classics. One might remember a few examples, such as Walter Murphy's chart-topping "A Fifth of Beethoven" or Eric Carmen's "All by Myself," but pass them off as interesting anomalies. However, the influence of the classics on rock music is pervasive and grows from a long line of precedents. This supplement to Janell R. Duxbury's original 1985 discography, Rockin' the Classics and Classicizin' the Rock, brings the earlier work up-to-date with hundreds of new entries documenting recently released or newly discovered examples of the interconnection between these musical genres.
