Joan Kaywell
R2,081 R1,896 Discovery Miles 18 960 Save R185 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first annotated guide to recent young adult literature that is organized into specific problem areas: alienation and identity, disabilities, homosexuality, divorced and single parents, adopted and foster families, abuse, eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia), alcohol and drugs, poverty, dropouts and delinquency, teenage pregnancy, AIDS, death and dying, and stress and suicide. More than 900 recommended books published through 1993 have been annotated. Reading levels of recommended books are grades 5-8 and interest level is through grade 12.

This work addresses bibliotherapy, but is not based on it. Instead, it is built on the premise that literacy is the key to growth and understanding. Each chapter deals with a specific adolescent problem area and begins with general comments about the problem, startling information and current statistics about its gravity and pervasiveness, warning signs to look for, and suggestions of what to do and where to go for help. Each entry contains complete bibliographic information. The format and readable annotations will make it easy for young adults, parents, librarians, teachers, clergy, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and health professionals to find appropriate fiction and nonfiction books and articles on the serious problems that adolescents face today.

This is the most comprehensive bibliography to date of works by and about General Matthew B. Ridgway, one of America's greatest military leaders. This short reference guide covers the entire career of this professional soldier and diplomat from World War I through World War II and his command of the first American Airborne Corps in Europe, his command of the Eighth Army in Korea, his command in the Pacific, Japan, and NATO, and his later service as Army Chief of Staff. This study offers a short biographical sketch, identifies important archival sources, and provides annotations with the 367 citations to books, documents, journal articles, and other materials. The bibliography is organized into chapters dealing with various genres of material, periods, and topics and then arranged alphabetically by author. The indexes to periodicals, authors, and subjects make the material easily available for the use of students, scholars, and experts interested in America's military history from 1917 to the present.

The IQ Debate - A Selective Guide to the Literature (Hardcover, Annotated edition): Stephen H. Aby, Martha J. McNamara The IQ Debate - A Selective Guide to the Literature (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Stephen H. Aby, Martha J. McNamara
R2,078 R1,893 Discovery Miles 18 930 Save R185 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past twenty years, one of the most bitter debates within the social sciences has centered on Arthur Jensen's contention that American blacks are, on average, less intelligent than whites and that this alleged difference is genetic in origin. Aby's selective, annotated bibliography offers scholars a concise guide to the storm of argument and counterargument over Jensen's suggestion and to the scientific, legal, educational, philosophic, and social issues it has raised. Aby has catalogued and described more than 400 books, book chapters, professional journal articles, newspaper and magazine articles, source documents, media materials, and reference sources relating to the controversy. He begins with an overview of the IQ debate, its history, and the principal participants. He then arranges bibliographic entries in chapters according to the type of source; each entry includes descriptive annotations of up to 300 words. A glossary explains technical terms that are used in the annotations and in the debate itself. This bibliography will be an important addition to collections in education, sociology, and psychology, as well as a resource for courses on educational testing and measurement, racism, sociology of education, and black education.

The Complete Works of Charles Dickens (in 30 Volumes, Illustrated) - A Tale of Two Cities (Hardcover): Charles Dickens The Complete Works of Charles Dickens (in 30 Volumes, Illustrated) - A Tale of Two Cities (Hardcover)
Charles Dickens
R1,013 Discovery Miles 10 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is impossible to overstate the importance of British novelist CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) not only to literature in the English language, but to Western civilization on the whole. He is arguably the first fiction writer to have become an international celebrity. He popularized episodic fiction and the cliffhanger, which had a profound influence on the development of film and television. He is entirely responsible for the popular image of Victorian London that still lingers today, and his characters-from Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge, from Miss Havisham to Uriah Heep-have become not merely iconic, but mythic. But it was his stirring portraits of ordinary people-not the upper classes or the aristocracy-and his fervent cries for social, moral, and legal justice for the working poor, and in particular for poor children, in the grim early decades of the Industrial Revolution that powerfully impacted social concerns well into the 20th century. Without Charles Dickens, we may never have seen the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Upton Sinclair, or even Bob Dylan. Here, in 30 beautiful volumes-complete with all the original illustrations-is every published word written by one of the most important writers ever. The essential collector's set will delight anyone who cherishes English literature...and who takes pleasure in constantly rediscovering its joys. This volume contains A Tale of Two Cities, which was originally serialized in Dickens's own periodical All the Year Round in 1859. A tale of the French Revolution, it is one of the most beloved works by Dickens, and remains a bitter critique of oppression and retribution by the powerful against the weak.

A unique bibliographic and historiographic guide to the study of contemporary Italy, this book points to over 650 texts that have shaped the academic and scholarly study of postwar Italy. It is the first guide to include a genuine mix of English-language and Italian-language materials and to approach these materials in a historiographic as well as a bibliographic manner. It is an ideal guide for English, North American, and Italian scholars who have just begun their study of Italy or want to know more about research in areas outside their area of expertise.

Following the introduction, which outlines the context within which the evolution of Italian studies should be viewed, the book is divided into two parts. Part I includes five historiographic chapters providing a detailed survey and analysis of works published in history, politics, government, the economy, and society. Part II is an annotated bibliographic guide to all of the texts pointed to in Part I.

This project documents the rich source material in European and North American repositories relating to the history of countries formerly under colonial rule. The manuscript and document holdings of public and private archives, libraries, museums and other institutions referred to in the guide cover all aspects of history. The primary emphasis is on political, diplomatic, commercial and military history, but there is good coverage of cultural history - especially in the reports and correspondence of explorers and travellers in missionary archives. Each series, of which this is the third, is arranged by country; sources within national volumes are described by repositories and archival groups.

A vital reference tool for scholars and researchers, this volume is the first comprehensive Gandhian bibliography since 1974. In addition to in-depth annotations, the entries include full bibliographic information. Many of the entries also include review notes of the work. Full indexes make the material easily accessible. This great London orchestra made its debut in a recording session shortly before its first public concert in 1932 and now has well over a thousand recordings to its credit. All are dated and detailed for the first time in this meticulous study researched from primary sources. Commercial sessions account for most of the 1300 entries, but the main chronological sequence also includes live recordings and videos. Copious indexing allows access to the main chronological listings via performers, repertoire, record companies, or locations. The study can also be read as a cross-section of the work of the classical recording industry. Appendixes cover film soundtracks, recordings made by the London Philharmonic Choir independently of the orchestra, controversial attributions, and principal players in the orchestra. Indexes of (and notes on) the recorded repertoire, conductors who have recorded with the orchestra, and the studios, halls, and churches used as recording venues are supplemented by a comprehensive general index of soloists, singers (including full casts of operas), producers, engineers, and recording companies, giving easy access to a wealth of information, most of which has previously been unpublished.

In January of 1972 the Golden Age of Opera series of the Edward J. Smith Recordings was succeeded by the Unique Opera Records Corporation (UORC) and released two-hundred and eighty numbered releases between 1972 and December, 1977. Smith's final private label, the A.N.N.A. Record Company (ANNA) released seventy-three numbered issues between 1978 and 1982. Interspersed between UORC and ANNA, and spanning the years 1954 to 1981, numerous "special label" issues were released under fugitive names. As a companion to the first volume, EJS: Discography of the Edward J. Smith Recordings "The Golden Age of Opera," 1956-1971, this volume continues where the first left off. The three labels are catalogued in separate sections. Researchers will appreciate the ten indexes provided and the selectively quoted material from Smith's personal correspondence that supplements the text.

The volume includes a keyboard music index as well as a general discography and a bibliography. This work should prove invaluable for scholars examining the impact of Black composers on music and dance, and it will be equally valuable to those devising repertoire for teaching and concert purposes.

R2,080 R1,894 Discovery Miles 18 940 Save R186 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cocaine has been a socio-medical problem for centuries. In the United States, the first cocaine epidemic occurred between the 1880s and the 1920s. In the 1960s shortages of heroin as well as government programs to stop the smuggling of marijuana may have stimulated the use of cocaine as a substitute. With the development of crack, cocaine became available at a price that made it accessible to virtually anyone. Today, the long-term effects of crack are just beginning to be felt, especially among children born of users. Treatment of cocaine abuse has traditionally been non-pharmacological, although beginning with the 1980s, various drugs have been used to decrease cocaine craving. This bibliography contains more than 600 references, spanning a century of research and writing. Source publications, all of which are annotated, include books, articles, conference proceedings, dissertations, and government publications. The material is organized within four subject-oriented chapters, and alphabetically within each chapter. Author and subject indexes provide additional access. In addition, Miletich includes appendixes on common names for cocaine, videocassettes about the drug, and a timeline. The work will be of value to researchers as well as social workers, psychologists, and others working in the substance abuse field.

Jewish elderly are among the most diverse and culturally heterogeneous people belonging to the aged population anywhere. Their great diversity and conflicting approaches to subjects affecting their health and well-being are familiar problems in services development, in social policy, and in services delivery. At the same time, this diversity is a source of fascination for practitioners, policy makers, leaders of religious and secular institutions, and scholars in gerontology and ethnicity. Ideas about serving the needs of this segment of society are eagerly sought by both the lay and the professional communities. This is the first annotated bibliography to deal with the approximately one million Jewish elderly in the English-speaking countries and Israel, and it offers the reader an up-to-date survey of published material. Covering the latest findings from gerontological research, the book addresses outstanding issues in health and welfare, mental health, and support systems utilization, and provides a comprehensive treatment of the characteristics, traditions, customs, languages, organization, and historical backgrounds relating to the Jewish aged. Jewish Elderly in the English-Speaking Countries encompasses many of the aspects of living in different cultural environments, and identifies a wealth of information on demographics, immigration and settlement, out-migration and relocation, adjustment to changing environments, political participation, attitudes and values, and methods of intervention on behalf of Jewish aged. This exhaustive study will be immensely useful to gerontologists engaged in cross-cultural research, and it will serve as a valuable guide to Jewish religious and charity leaders, senior citizen community centers, sociologists, anthropologists, and practitioners in all areas of human development.

Materials listed include books, articles, reports, journals, and audiovisual materials. Each entry is matched with a descriptive and evaluative annotation. The book begins with an essay that overviews gerontological social work and discusses the organization of the volume. The first chapter contains a listing of general works, particularly books and articles that address aging from a social work perspective. The second chapter contains entries for books and articles related to clinical practice issues. The third chapter, on educational issues, includes books, articles, curriculum modules, reports, and annotated bibliographies. The fourth, on geriatric health services in social work, has entries for books and articles. A fifth chapter, on resource information and materials, provides detailed descriptions of journals, audiovisuals, institutions, and media resource guides. During the last 15 years, the number of conferences on Jonathan Edwards has tripled and the number of books on him has doubled. The scope of scholarship on Edwards has broadened to include relatively neglected texts, as have efforts to fix him more firmly in the 18th century and to gauge his influence on the 20th. This bibliography demonstrates the growth of interest in Jonathan Edwards and serves as a guide to recent research about him.

The volume includes entries for nearly 700 books, articles, dissertations, and reviews published on Jonathan Edwards between 1979 and 1993. The entries are grouped in chapters, with each chapter devoted to a particular year. The entries in each chapter are arranged alphabetically. Each entry includes an annotation, with extensive annotations for major works. A chronology lists Edwards's publications by long and short titles, and an introductory essay overviews the surge of critical interest in this influential 18th-century American theologian.
