What does it mean to be a warrior? What does it take to be the
best? What must a man do to endure life's injustice, confront his
own demons and prevail? Dominiquie Vandenberg could have been one
of the highest ranked martial artists in the world. He could have
been an Olympic wrestling champion, or earned a small fortune
promoting his own line of sports merchandise. But all Vandenberg
cared about was fighting all out with no holds barred, and when at
sixteen years old he discovered Kunto, a Japanese all-out fighting
style, Vandenberg left his home and family for training on Okinawa.
Vandenberg, at eighteen, became the youngest man ever to win such
the champion title in The World Open in Bare Knuckle Karate. But
while on a break in his native Belgium he was hit by a runaway car
a week before he was scheduled to leave for his next adventure.
After a painful recovery, Vandenberg did what dead-ended men from
around the world for a hundred years have done. He joined the
French Foreign Legion. Vandenberg saw action in central Africa. But
when his leg healed enough to allow him to fight again, he went
AWOL, flew to Thailand and fought and won his first fighting match
in years. returned to Thailand to find his fiancee, whom he'd met
while volunteering with the Karen insurgency against the Burmese
National Army, murdered by Thai river pirates. The loss sent
Vandenberg into a spiral of despair. After completing the rest of
his Legion contract, he went back to Thailand for his final fight.
Vandenberg fought and beat Kran, the legendary Northern Thai
fighter. In a country where fighting is the national sport,
Vandenberg had become the best. There was no man more deadly or
dangerous in or out of the ring.
In the Ring With James J. Jeffries is Adam Pollack's 4th book in
his heavyweight champion series. It describes in meticulous detail
Jeffries' bouts from the 1890s up to 1905 (including round by round
accounts as well as pre- and post-fight analysis), his opponents,
and his training regimen. It discusses the time's heavyweight
scene, including contenders, pre-fight hype and negotiations,
political and legal obstacles, and the color line. Chapters also
include descriptions and analysis of Corbett-Sharkey II,
Fitzsimmons-Ruhlin, Fitz-Sharkey II, and Corbett-McCoy, as well as
controversies surrounding several bouts. The book is based on next
day local newspaper accounts, comparing and contrasting their
descriptions and analysis in order to provide an authentic view of
how heavyweight boxing was perceived at the time. The use of local
primary sources gives readers a rare opportunity to relive
Jeffries' career as if they were reading about it at the time he
was fighting. The book also includes Jeffries' career record, over
100 photos, 924 footnotes, and an index.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is an emergent sport where competitors in
a ring or cage utilize strikes (punches, kicks, elbows and knees)
as well as submission techniques to defeat opponents. This book
explores the carnal experience of fighting through a sensory
ethnography of MMA, and how it transgresses the cultural scripts of
masculinity in popular culture. Based on four years of participant
observation in a local MMA club and in-depth interviews with
amateur and professional MMA fighters, Spencer documents fighters'
training regimes and the meanings they attach to participation in
the sport. Drawing from the philosophical phenomenology of Martin
Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jean-Luc Nancy, this book
develops bodies-centered ontological and epistemological grounding
for this study. Guided by such a position, it places bodies at the
center of analysis of MMA and elucidates the embodied experience of
pain and injury, and the sense and rhythms of fighting.
Phil shares his personal ecstasy and anguish in learning the
lessons of life through wrestling. The vivid and intimate
descriptions of his hilarious and sometimes terrifying experiences
keep you wanting to read more about his life.

There are various Ways. There is the Way of salvation by the law of
Buddha, the Way of Confucius governing the Way of learning, the Way
of healing as a doctor, as a poet teaching the Way of Waka, tea,
archery, and many arts and skills. Each man practises as he feels
inclined. It is said the warrior's is the twofold Way of pen and
sword, and he should have a taste for both Ways. Even if a man has
no natural ability he can be a warrior by sticking assiduously to
both divisions of the Way. Generally speaking, the Way of the
warrior is resolute acceptance of death.
All the tools necessary to build a powerful defensive base for
boxing -- every defence for every punch from every angle -- are
included in this manual. Punching prowess has become equated with
boxing, but what is done in response to that incoming flurry makes
a truly good boxer: how to make an opponent miss, how to easily
defend, and, most importantly, how to counterattack. Building on
that defensive base, this book explores natural punching triggers,
or logical counter-punching sequences, that move past the
beginner's realm of being a mere puncher into the upper echelons of
crafty counter boxing. With encyclopaedic boxing defensive drills
bolstered by numerous illustrative photographs, this is a one-stop
resource for learning the art of counter-punching.

Throughout the new millennium, the number of women interested in
amateur wrestling has skyrocketed. Across the board, from grade
school to college, girls and women have been strapping on their
head guards and singlets to grapple with their dreams of success on
the mat. However, the sport and its participants have not always
had an easy time. This book documents the growth of female amateur
wrestling in America, and the difficulties and victories it has
faced, from facing removal from the 2013 Olympic Games, to missing
the 2020 Games altogether due to COVID-19. With exclusive details
and photographs, this work chronicles the bravery of the women who
have headed the sport and examines the wrestlers' performances in
the 2021 Olympic Games. It also features interviews with the female
wrestlers who continue to challenge an often-suppressive field,
hoping to eventually leave their mark on the American sports world.
This book is an ethnographic study of the martial art of taijiquan
(or 'tai chi') as it is practiced in China and the United States.
Drawing on recent literature on ethnicity, critical race theory,
the phenomenology of race, and globalization, the author discusses
identity in terms of sensual experience and the transmission or
receipt of knowledge. The book concludes with a discussion of how
processes of individual experience, urban life, nationalism, and
globalization inhabit the body, contribute to the sensual
experience of identify, and, ultimately, raise fundamental
questions about the relationship between 'doing' and 'being' .
