While the old adage, "those who can't do, teach," is not entirely
true, all too often "those who can do" cannot teach effectively.
This book is unique in that it offers a holistic approach to
teaching martial arts; incorporating elements of educational theory
and communication techniques typically overlooked in budo. Teachers
will improve their abilities to motivate, educate, and retain
students, while students interested in the martial arts will
develop a better understanding of what instructional method best
suits their needs. *A tactical toolset useful to anyone's teaching
style*Improve your ability to motivate, educate, and retain
students*Explains how to optimize time and attention*Designed to
individual preferences and learning styles*Effective for both
children and adultsThe author's approach balances the reality that
martial arts instructs are responsible for ensuring the safety of
practitioners who learn potentially deadly techniques with the
truism that if their classes are not enjoyable and productive no
one will participate in them.
The Final Round is the inspirational story of one woman and her
fight to be able to box. Growing up in Fleetwood with no career
aspirations, Jane Couch's world changed overnight when she watched
two American women boxers on TV and knew she'd found her calling.
However, at that time, women weren't allowed to box in the UK - so
Jane had to train under the radar, sparring illegally with men and
travelling abroad to fight. She had to prove herself at every turn,
but with a country that wouldn't let her do what she loved, she was
up against the ropes. But Jane fought back. In 1998 a court of law
found the British Board of Boxing Control guilty of discrimination,
and she became the first female to be awarded a UK licence to box.
Far from being celebrated, she was ridiculed and labelled a 'freak
show', the subject of TV chat-show debates. Having paved the way
for women to box, Jane found herself hung out to dry by the
male-dominated boxing establishment. Her story is one of passion,
guts and determination.
A fast and powerful style that excels in throwing and ground
fighting Sambo is considered one of the most effective, technically
diverse, and dynamic modern sport fighting styles ever devised.
Developed in the Soviet Union and based on Kodokan Judo and
wrestling, sambo emphasizes utility over aesthetics. The end result
is a fast paced and powerful system that excels in both throwing
and ground fighting. This book offers a serious, technical look at
the Russian martial sport that has changed the way the martial arts
world looks at grappling. Our emphasis will be a systematic
approach, presenting skills based on their function and utility in
actual sport fighting. Sambo places emphasis on fast-paced,
powerful and functional throwing techniques, and equally
fast-paced, powerful and functional ground fighting techniques.
Using fundamentally sound skills performed by a motivated and
well-conditioned athlete, who has molded what he knows to work for
him with a high ratio of success, is hard to beat. Contents include
The essentials of sambo Throwing techniques Leg, ankle, and hip
locks Armlocks Holds and breakdowns Over 1200 instructional
photographs "The skills presented in this book have all passed the
tests of time and competition. Everything presented has been used
successfully at all levels of competitive sambo." -Steve Scott
"The Book of Five Rings " is one of the most insightful texts on
the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian
culture. Written not only for martial artists but for anyone who
wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life,
the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict
that underlies every level of human interaction.
"The Book of Five Rings " was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist
and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary's
translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that
presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along
with Musashi's text, Cleary translates here another important
Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, "The Book of Family
Traditions on the Art of War " by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights
the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply
to the way of the warrior.

Sweet Fighting Man is based on a collection of interviews with
British boxers, from journeymen to champions. The book covers a
timespan of over 50 years and features some classic personalities,
such as Dave 'Boy' Green, the ever-popular British and European
champion who fought for world titles against Carlos Palomino and
Sugar Ray Leonard; Bunny Johnson, the first black British
Heavyweight Champion, and Joe Somerville, the jovial journeyman who
had literally thousands of fights in the lurid environment of the
boxing booths. Boxers are fundamentally entertainers and each
chapter in this book is an individual performance, giving the true
flavour of the characters involved. Their thought-provoking
reflections proffer a unique insight into the often rollercoaster
life of a professional boxer. The interviewees also talk about many
aspects of their lives away from the ring and, as they drop their
guards and open their hearts, they deliver plenty of laugh-out-loud
moments along the way.
Now in paperback! "From the first page to the last, Klein's prose
retains its powers of enchantment and illumination. It is one of
the best boxing books ever penned." -Boston Globe "[A] muscular,
relentlessly detailed book." -Wall Street Journal "I can lick any
son-of-a-bitch in the world." So boasted John L. Sullivan, the
first modern heavyweight boxing champion of the world, a man who
was the gold standard of American sport for more than a decade, and
the first athlete to earn more than a million dollars. He had a big
ego, big mouth, and bigger appetites. His womanizing, drunken
escapades, and chronic police-blotter presence were godsends to a
burgeoning newspaper industry. The larger-than-life boxer embodied
the American Dream for late nineteenth-century immigrants as he
rose from Boston's Irish working class to become the most
recognizable man in the nation. In the process, the "Boston Strong
Boy" transformed boxing from outlawed bare-knuckle fighting into
the gloved spectacle we know today. Strong Boy tells the story of
America's first sports superstar, a self-made man who personified
the power and excesses of the Gilded Age. Everywhere John L.
Sullivan went, his fists backed up his bravado. Sullivan's epic
brawls, such as his 75-round bout against Jake Kilrain, and his
cross-country barnstorming tour in which he literally challenged
all of America to a fight are recounted in vivid detail, as are his
battles outside the ring with a troubled marriage, wild weight and
fitness fluctuations, and raging alcoholism. Strong Boy gives
readers ringside seats to the colorful tale of one of the country's
first Irish-American heroes and the birth of the American sports
media and the country's celebrity obsession with athletes.

Sinner and Saint is the inspirational story of Martin Murray, St
Helens' flawed yet favourite son. A promising amateur teenage
boxer, Murray was drawn into a life fuelled with drugs, alcohol and
street fighting. By the age of 24, he had completed four jail
sentences, one of them in a notorious Cypriot prison. He still
managed to win the ABA welterweight title in 2004 - while on the
run! The reintroduction of boxing back into his life and a settled
family life proved to be his saviour. Turning pro in 2007, Murray
went on to win the Commonwealth and British middleweight titles,
and challenged for the world title on no fewer than four occasions.
Murray pulls no punches as he recounts his story in the most
intimate and vivid way - a rollercoaster life ultimately redeemed
through his success in boxing.
