they relate to our physical, mental and emotional health. It also

This masterfully crafted guide to ninjitsu or budo explores in
depth the history, culture and philosophy of this fascinating and
enduring Japanese martial art. Budo is one of the least understood
forms of art in the world. Even more than skills or techniques, the
teachings of budo require faith to learn and courage to understand.
One of the fundamental teachings of budo is ninjutstu, the art of
perseverance that forms the basis of the Japanese martial arts. The
lessons in this book come directly from experiencing the living
vitality of the world's foremost master of the ninja arts, Masaaki
Hatsumi. Through the use of stories, poetry, art, and earned
wisdom, the authors move beyond the common image of the martial
arts and reveal the nature of the unexpected changes in themselves
as they struggled to come to terms with what being a martial artist
in the ninja tradition meant. The Art of Life and Death is a
reflection of the discipline, the aesthetics, and the philosophy
that lies hidden within the martial way. It is a glimpse at the
hidden potential of the martial arts, one where the practitioner
can embrace transcendence and transformation in order to face all
the fears that litter life and also life's most fearsome opponent:
Death.

Perhaps no other weapon represents Renaissance Italian fencing like
the rapier. But do we know how it was used and how it was taught?
This book takes you to the fencing School, or Salle, of celebrated
renaissance rapier Master Nicoletto Giganti of Venice, one among
the period teachers leaving instructions on the use of this weapon.
More uniquely, his 1606 text The School, or Salle is a veritable
training curriculum, with its stepwise lessons and easy-to-follow
explanations on the use of the rapier alone and rapier and dagger.
This faithful translation of Giganti's The School by
internationally-known rapier teacher Tom Leoni includes the
complete text, original illustrations, and an introduction on
rapier fencing that will make Giganti's text easy to follow. If you
are a martial artist, a fencer or have an interest in European
martial culture, this book belongs on your shelf.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is an emergent sport where competitors in
a ring or cage utilize strikes (punches, kicks, elbows and knees)
as well as submission techniques to defeat opponents. This book
explores the carnal experience of fighting through a sensory
ethnography of MMA, and how it transgresses the cultural scripts of
masculinity in popular culture. Based on four years of participant
observation in a local MMA club and in-depth interviews with
amateur and professional MMA fighters, Spencer documents fighters'
training regimes and the meanings they attach to participation in
the sport. Drawing from the philosophical phenomenology of Martin
Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jean-Luc Nancy, this book
develops bodies-centered ontological and epistemological grounding
for this study. Guided by such a position, it places bodies at the
center of analysis of MMA and elucidates the embodied experience of
pain and injury, and the sense and rhythms of fighting.

Mike Tyson "Raw, powerful and disturbing-a head-spinning take on
Mr. Tyson's life."-Wall Street Journal Philosopher, Broadway
headliner, fighter, felon-Mike Tyson has defied stereotypes,
expectations, and a lot of conventional wisdom during his three
decades in the public eye. Bullied as a boy in the toughest,
poorest neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tyson grew up to become one of
the most ferocious boxers of all time-and the youngest heavyweight
champion ever. But his brilliance in the ring was often compromised
by reckless behavior. Yet-even after hitting rock bottom-the man
who once admitted being addicted "to everything" fought his way
back, achieving triumphant success as an actor and newfound
happiness and stability as a father and husband. Brutal, honest,
raw, and often hilarious, Undisputed Truth is the singular journey
of an inspiring American original.

In "Atlas", Teddy recounts his incredible life, from juvenile
delinquent, to his induction into the legendary Cus D'Amato's
Boxing Camp and his first major challenge - training 14-year-old
Mike Tyson. An amateur boxer trained by D'Amato, Atlas captured the
Adirondack Golden Gloves title at 139 pounds in 1976. Forced out of
competition because of injury, Teddy turned his talents to training
fighters, including Mike Tyson, Barry McGuigan, Tracy Patterson,
Joey Gamache, Simon Brown and Donny Lalonde. In 1994, in a
memorable performance as trainer and corner man, Teddy inspired
Michael Moorer to beat Evander Holyfield for the world heavyweight
championship. Teddy has also employed his talents outside of the
ring appearing in 2 films and choreographing fight scenes for the
television series "Against the Law". "Atlas" is the remarkable
story of all of these achievements, told in Atlas' completely
inimitable voice. As you'd expect from a boxing memoir, it pulls no
punches.

For six decades the World Colored Heavyweight Championship was a
useful tool of racial oppression--the existence of the title far
more important to the white public than its succession of
champions. It took some extraordinary individuals, most notably
Jack Johnson, to challenge "the color line" in the ring, although
the title and the black fighters who contended for it continued
until the reign of Joe Louis a generation later. This history
traces the advent and demise of the Championship, the stories of
the 28 professional athletes who won it, and the demarcation of the
color line both in and out of the ring.

The black prizefighter labored in one of the few trades where an
African American man could win renown: boxing. His prowess in the
ring asserted an independence and powerful masculinity rare for
black men in a white-dominated society, allowing him to be a
man--and thus truly free. Louis Moore draws on the life stories of
African American fighters active from 1880 to 1915 to explore
working-class black manhood. As he details, boxers bought into
American ideas about masculinity and free enterprise to prove their
equality while using their bodies to become self-made men. The
African American middle class, meanwhile, grappled with an
expression of public black maleness they saw related to
disreputable leisure rather than respectable labor. Moore shows how
each fighter conformed to middle-class ideas of masculinity based
on his own judgment of what culture would accept. Finally, he
argues that African American success in the ring shattered the myth
of black inferiority despite media and government efforts to defend
white privilege.
