The Conscience and Self-Conscious Emotions in Adolescence - An integrative approach (Hardcover): Frans Schalkwijk The Conscience and Self-Conscious Emotions in Adolescence - An integrative approach (Hardcover)
Frans Schalkwijk
R6,482 Discovery Miles 64 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The consequences of apparent moral failings in an individual are something that can be seen frequently in the media and in everyday life. One issue that is rarely addressed in public discussion about someone s lack of conscience is any thought as to how the conscience actually functions. In "The Conscience and Self-Conscious Emotions in Adolescence, " Frans Schalkwijk presents a new definition of the conscience as a psychic function in which self-conscious emotions and empathy are dominant.

Schalkwijk combines current scientific research into empathy, shame and guilt as well as his rich clinical experience to create a wealth of information for clinicians working with children and adolescents. This book is a superb guide for operationalizing the diagnostics of the conscience, presenting a developmental approach to the theory and diagnostics of the conscience and integrating psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural, social, psychological and neurobiological theories. Research has shown that human behaviours are often enacted well below our potential cognitive level. In this book, a balance is found between affective and cognitive aspects of the conscience.

Accessibly written and incorporating case studies and detailed notation throughout, this is a highly practical work ideal for psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and professionals working with children, adolescents and adults.

Lacan - The Unconscious Reinvented - The Unconscious Reinvented (Paperback): Colette Soler Lacan - The Unconscious Reinvented - The Unconscious Reinvented (Paperback)
Colette Soler
R1,123 Discovery Miles 11 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In "Lacan: The Unconscious Reinvented," Colette Soler takes us beyond the formulas and catchphrases often used to characterize Lacan's work, and enters into a fresh, original and profound dialogue with his thought. Starting from the well-known "the unconscious is structured like language," she asks what led Lacan to speak of a "real unconscious." Soler discusses the key changes in Lacan's work over the years and the implicit questions that motivated these changes. Themes discussed include the unconscious, the symptom, affects, the direction of treatment and the political dimensions of analytic practice. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in Lacan's thought, as well as providing an introduction to the development of his ideas.

The Unconscious - A Conceptual Analysis (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre The Unconscious - A Conceptual Analysis (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre
R2,781 Discovery Miles 27 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Alasdair MacIntyre argues that Freud's conception of the unconscious is complicated by his tendency to use the term in two different ways. MacIntyre shows how Freud uses the term "unconscious" both as a straightforward description of psychological phenomena, and as an evaluative notion to explain the links between childhood events and adult behavior. This clarification helps to shed light on the many misunderstandings of psychoanalysis, and to separate out what is and what is not of lasting value in Freud's account of the unconscious.
This new edition includes a substantial new preface by the author, in which he discusses repression, determinism, transference, and "practical rationality," and offers a rare comparison of Aristotle and Lacan on the concept of desire. MacIntyre takes the opportunity to reflect both on the reviews and criticisms of the first edition and also on his own philosophical stance.

Jung and the Jungians on Myth - An Introduction (Paperback): Steven Walker Jung and the Jungians on Myth - An Introduction (Paperback)
Steven Walker
R1,259 Discovery Miles 12 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Carl Gustav Jung (1875- 1961) was never more insightful and intriguing than when he discussed mythology. The key to understanding the Jungian approach to mythology lies in the concept of the image, which provides the basis for his theory of the unconscious. By emphasizing the image over the word, Jungian psychology distinguishes itself dramatically from Freudian, Lacanian, and other psychologies that stress the task of interpreting the language - the words - of the unconscious.
In Jung and the Jungians on Myth, Steven Walker carefully leads the reader through the essential lines of thought in Jungian psychology before developing his method for using Jungian ideas to approach mythological texts. Whether one is sympathetic toward Jung's ideas or critical of them, one will find in Walker's discussion a lucid introduction to Jungian perspectives on myth and psychology.

Guidance for Grief (Paperback): Julie Beischel Guidance for Grief (Paperback)
Julie Beischel
R384 Discovery Miles 3 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'Dr Beischel is a courageous, innovative pioneer who has brought immense respectability to a controversial area' Larry Dossey, MD, bestselling author. Julie Beischel PhD has spent most of her career investigating grief and after-death communication. Her research, along with that of many others, demonstrates that one of the most effective ways of addressing grief is recognizing that our connections to our lost loved ones endure. The bereaved can - and regularly do - experience a 'continuing bond' with the departed. Based on her research, Dr Beischel mindfully developed this unique card deck to guide users through loss and grief, allowing for continuing two-way, loving, inspiring relationships with departed loved ones. The deck features 52 cards, split into four themes: signs (which guide you to recognize specific and meaningful real-world content as potential messages from departed loved ones), messages (which feature messages from you to your loved one to emphasize a continued two-way connection), affirmations (which contain potentially transformative information and inspiration for addressing the different aspects of grief), and wisdom (which feature quotes from laboratory-tested mediums with first-hand experience of communication with the departed - including best-selling author Laura Lynne Jackson - that offer insights and tips to help you connect with your loved one). For those seeking to explore their loss through regular reflection and ritual, this deck offers personalized hope and guidance through each user's unique experience of grief and loss.

Comparing Kant and Sartre (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Sorin Baiasu Comparing Kant and Sartre (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Sorin Baiasu
R2,354 R1,859 Discovery Miles 18 590 Save R495 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For a long time, commentators viewed Sartre as one of Kant's significant twentieth-century critics. Recent research of their philosophies has discovered that Sartre's relation to Kant's work manifests an 'anxiety of influence', which masks more profound similarities. This volume of newly written comparative essays is the first edited collection on the philosophies of Kant and Sartre. The volume focuses on issues in metaphysics, metaethics and metaphilosophy, and explores the similarities and differences between the two authors, as well as the complementarity of some of their views, particularly on autonomy, happiness, self-consciousness, evil, temporality, imagination and the nature of philosophy.

Visible Mind - Movies, modernity and the unconscious (Hardcover, New): Christopher Hauke Visible Mind - Movies, modernity and the unconscious (Hardcover, New)
Christopher Hauke
R2,937 Discovery Miles 29 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why is the moving image so important in our lives? What is the link between the psychology of Jung, Freud and films? How do film and psychology address the problems of modernity? Visible Mind is a book about why film is so important to contemporary life, how film affects us psychologically as individuals, and how it affects us culturally as collective social beings. Since its inception, film has been both responsive to historical cultural conditions and reflective of changes in psychological and emotional needs. Arising at the same moment over a century ago, both film and psychoanalysis helped to frame the fragmented experience of modern life in a way that is still with us today. Visible Mind pays attention to the historical context of film for what it can tell us about our inner lives, past and present. Christopher Hauke discusses a range of themes from the perspective of film and analytical psychology, these include: The Face, The Shadow, Narrative and Story, Reality in Film, Cinema and the American Psyche, the use of Movies in the Psychotherapy Session and Archetypal themes in popular film. Unique to Visible Mind, six interviews with top film professionals from different departments both unlocks the door on the role of the unconscious in their creative process, and brings alive the reflexive critical thinking on modernity, postmodernity and Jungian psychology found throughout Visible Mind. Visible Mind is written for academics, filmmakers and students who want to understand what Jung and Freud's psychology can offer on the subject of filmmaking and the creative process, for therapists of any background who want to know more about the significance of movies in their work and for film lovers in general who are curious about what makes movies work.

Figures of the Pre-Freudian Unconscious from Flaubert to Proust (Paperback): Michael R. Finn Figures of the Pre-Freudian Unconscious from Flaubert to Proust (Paperback)
Michael R. Finn
R974 Discovery Miles 9 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An original, wide-ranging contribution to the study of French writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book examines the ways in which the unconscious was understood in literature in the years before Freud. Exploring the influence of medical and psychological discourse over the existence and/or potential nature of the unconscious, Michael R. Finn discusses the resistance of feminists opposing medical diagnoses of the female brain as the seat of the unconscious, the hypnotism craze of the 1880s and the fascination, in fiction, with dual personality and posthypnotic crimes. The heart of the study explores how the unconscious inserts itself into the writing practice of Flaubert, Maupassant and Proust. Through the presentation of scientific evidence and quarrels about the psyche, Michael R. Finn is able to show the work of such writers in a completely new light.

Conscious - A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind (Hardcover): Annaka Harris Conscious - A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind (Hardcover)
Annaka Harris
R558 R398 Discovery Miles 3 980 Save R160 (29%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "If you've ever wondered how you have the capacity to wonder, some fascinating insights await you in these pages." --Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals As concise and enlightening as Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, this mind-expanding dive into the mystery of consciousness is an illuminating meditation on the self, free will, and felt experience. What is consciousness? How does it arise? And why does it exist? We take our experience of being in the world for granted. But the very existence of consciousness raises profound questions: Why would any collection of matter in the universe be conscious? How are we able to think about this? And why should we? In this wonderfully accessible book, Annaka Harris guides us through the evolving definitions, philosophies, and scientific findings that probe our limited understanding of consciousness. Where does it reside, and what gives rise to it? Could it be an illusion, or a universal property of all matter? As we try to understand consciousness, we must grapple with how to define it and, in the age of artificial intelligence, who or what might possess it. Conscious offers lively and challenging arguments that alter our ideas about consciousness-allowing us to think freely about it for ourselves, if indeed we can.

Incubation in Problem Solving and Creativity - Unconscious Processes (Paperback): Kenneth J. Gilhooly Incubation in Problem Solving and Creativity - Unconscious Processes (Paperback)
Kenneth J. Gilhooly
R1,449 Discovery Miles 14 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can problems be solved by setting them aside or by sleeping on them? Incubation, the process of stopping conscious work on problems for a set period of time, is an integral part of the creative problem solving process. Providing an overview of the main issues, findings and implications of cognitive research on incubation effects in problem solving and creativity, this book argues that incubation is an effective strategy for tackling problems that do not yield to initial solution attempts. Gilhooly reasons that unconscious work is automatic and explores the underlying processes involved in incubation, providing evidence to showcase the major role of unconscious processing in problem solving. Incubation in Problem Solving and Creativity concludes with a discussion of the implications of unconscious work theory for enhanced problem solving, positioning incubation as an effective and important stage in creative problem solving. This book is an invaluable resource for students and researchers of problem solving, creativity and thinking and reasoning as well as for students from all disciplines taking problem solving modules.

Hans Steiner, Rebecca Hall
R1,183 Discovery Miles 11 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book will help the reader get to know their unconscious mind through a series of exercises. Results will serve all curious readers well, especially psychotherapists, writers, artists, actors and others working in the world of creativity. It is important for all of us to achieve a deeper understanding of who we are, with the satisfaction that commonly comes with that. Readers will be able to set free their hidden selves to direct their lives in new and satisfying directions. Humans have a complex unconscious mind, containing vital information about who we are, who we were and where we are going. Sigmund Freud deserves the most credit for pointing systematically to channels of access. Today's neuroscience has tested these points of access and is suggesting new ones. This book introduces five well-established methods of gaining useful access to our unconscious mind. The authors have taught the theory, science, and practice discussed in this book for over fifteen years at Stanford University to people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. Having witnessed the growth of their students, they are confident about the positive contributions these exercises make to psychotherapy, creative work, and the sheer enjoyment of new horizons in our lives.

Actual Consciousness (Paperback): Ted Honderich Actual Consciousness (Paperback)
Ted Honderich
R913 Discovery Miles 9 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is it for you to be conscious? There is no agreement whatever in philosophy or science: it has remained a hard problem, a mystery. Is this partly or mainly owed to the existing theories not even having the same subject, not answering the same question? In Actual Consciousness, Ted Honderich sets out to supersede dualisms, objective physicalisms, abstract functionalism, externalisms, and other positions in the debate. He argues that the theory of Actualism, right or wrong, is unprecedented, in nine ways. (1) It begins from gathered data and proceeds to an adequate initial clarification of consciousness in the primary ordinary sense. This consciousness is summed up as something's being actual. (2) Like basic science, Actualism proceeds from this metaphorical or figurative beginning to what is wholly literal and explicit-constructed answers to the questions of what is actual and what it is for it to be actual. (3) In so doing, the theory respects the differences of consciousness within perception, consciousness that is thinking in a generic sense, and consciousness that is generic wanting. (4) What is actual with your perceptual consciousness is a subjective physical world out there, very likely a room, differently real from the objective physical world, that other division of the physical world. (5) What it is for the myriad subjective physical worlds to be actual is for them to be subjectively physical, which is exhaustively characterized. (6) What is actual with cognitive and affective consciousness is affirmed or valued representations. The representations being actual, which is essential to their nature, is their being differently subjectively physical from the subjective physical worlds. (7) Actualism, naturally enough when you think of it, but unlike any other existing general theory of consciousness, is thus externalist with perceptual consciousness but internalist with respect to cognitive and affective consciousness. (8) It satisfies rigorous criteria got from examination of the failures of the existing theories. In particular, it explains the role of subjectivity in thinking about consciousness, including a special subjectivity that is individuality. (9) Philosophers and scientists have regularly said that thinking about consciousness requires just giving up the old stuff and starting again. Actualism does this. Science is served by this main line philosophy, which is concentration on the logic of ordinary intelligence-clarity, consistency and validity, completeness, generality.

The Foundation of the Unconscious - Schelling, Freud and the Birth of the Modern Psyche (Paperback): Matt Ffytche The Foundation of the Unconscious - Schelling, Freud and the Birth of the Modern Psyche (Paperback)
Matt Ffytche
R789 Discovery Miles 7 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The unconscious, cornerstone of psychoanalysis, was a key twentieth-century concept and retains an enormous influence on psychological and cultural theory. Yet there is a surprising lack of investigation into its roots in the critical philosophy and Romantic psychology of the early nineteenth century, long before Freud. Why did the unconscious emerge as such a powerful idea? And why at that point? This interdisciplinary study breaks new ground in tracing the emergence of the unconscious through the work of philosopher Friedrich Schelling, examining his association with Romantic psychologists, anthropologists and theorists of nature. It sets out the beginnings of a neglected tradition of the unconscious psyche and proposes a compelling new argument: that the unconscious develops from the modern need to theorise individual independence. The book assesses the impact of this tradition on psychoanalysis itself, re-reading Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams in the light of broader post-Enlightenment attempts to theorise individuality.

R3,210 Discovery Miles 32 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Cambridge Handbook of Consciousness is the first of its kind in the field, and its appearance marks a unique time in the history of intellectual inquiry on the topic. After decades during which consciousness was considered beyond the scope of legitimate scientific investigation, consciousness re-emerged as a popular focus of research towards the end of the last century, and it has remained so for nearly 20 years. There are now so many different lines of investigation on consciousness that the time has come when the field may finally benefit from a book that pulls them together and, by juxtaposing them, provides a comprehensive survey of this exciting field. An authoritative desk reference, which will also be suitable as an advanced textbook.
