Maartje Abbenhuis, Christopher Ernest Barber, Annalise R. Higgins
R4,781 Discovery Miles 47 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The exact legacies of the two Hague Peace Conferences remain unclear. On the one hand, diplomatic and military historians, who cast their gaze to 1914, traditionally dismiss the events of 1899 and 1907 as insignificant footnotes on the path to the First World War. On the other, experts in international law posit that The Hague's foremost legacy lies in the manner in which the conferences progressed the law of war and the concept and application of international justice. This volume brings together some of the latest scholarship on the legacies of the Hague Peace Conferences in a comprehensive volume, drawing together an international team of contributors.

The Diplomatic System of the European Union - Evolution, change and challenges (Paperback): Michael Smith, Stephan Keukeleire,... The Diplomatic System of the European Union - Evolution, change and challenges (Paperback)
Michael Smith, Stephan Keukeleire, Sophie Vanhoonacker
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past five years, the EU has established a new system of diplomacy centred on the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. This new system reflects a process of evolution in a changing context, and has been faced by major challenges since its inception. This book examines the diplomatic system of the EU, locating it within the broader study of diplomacy and the European integration project. The volume is structured around the interrelated themes of institutional change and the evolving practices of EU diplomacy. It tracks the development of the EU's system of diplomacy, with particular reference to the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the establishment of the EEAS and the emerging practices of EU strategic and structural diplomacy. Bringing together contributions from leading experts in the field, this book provides an original approach to the development and operation of the EU's diplomatic system. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of European Union international relations, European Union politics and diplomacy.

Summits & Regional Governance - The Americas in Comparative Perspective (Paperback): Gordon Mace, Jean-Philippe Therien, Diana... Summits & Regional Governance - The Americas in Comparative Perspective (Paperback)
Gordon Mace, Jean-Philippe Therien, Diana Tussie, Olivier Dabene
R1,305 Discovery Miles 13 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite the large number of regional and global summits there is very little known about the functioning and impact of this particular type of diplomatic practice. While recognizing that the growing importance of summits is a universal phenomenon, this volume takes advantage of the richness of the Americas experiment to offer a theoretically grounded comparative analysis of contemporary summitry. The book addresses questions such as: How effective have summits been ? How have civil society and other non-state actors been involved in summits? How have summits impacted on the management of regional affairs? Filling a significant void in the literature, this volume offers an original contribution helping to understand how summitry has become a central feature of world politics. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of diplomacy, international organizations, and global/regional governance.

The Rhetoric of Soft Power - Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts (Hardcover, New): Craig Hayden The Rhetoric of Soft Power - Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts (Hardcover, New)
Craig Hayden
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Rhetoric of Soft Power: Public Diplomacy in Global Contexts provides a comparative assessment of public diplomacy and strategic communication initiatives in order to portray how Joseph Nye's notion of "soft power" has translated into context-specific strategies of international influence. The book examines four cases-Japan, Venezuela, China, and the United States-to illuminate the particular significance of culture, foreign publics, and communication technologies for the foreign policy ambitions of each country. This study explores the notion of soft power as a set of theoretical arguments about power, and as a reflection of how nation-states perceive what is an increasingly necessary perspective on international relations in an age of ubiquitous global communication flows and encroaching networks of non-state actors. Through an analysis of policy discourse, public diplomacy initiatives, and related programs of strategic influence, soft power in each case represents a localized set of assumptions about the requirements of persuasion, the relevance of foreign audiences to state goals, and the perception of what counts as a soft power resource. This timely analysis provides an unprecedented comparative investigation of the relationship between soft power and public diplomacy.

Counterinsurgency Wars and the Anglo-American Alliance - The Special Relationship on the Rocks (Hardcover): Andrew Mumford Counterinsurgency Wars and the Anglo-American Alliance - The Special Relationship on the Rocks (Hardcover)
Andrew Mumford
R3,603 Discovery Miles 36 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Andrew Mumford challenges the notion of a "special relationship" between the United States and United Kingdom in diplomatic and military affairs, the most vaunted and, he says, exaggerated of associations in the post-1945 era. Though they are allies to be sure, national self-interest and domestic politics have often undercut their relationship. This book combines for the first time a history of the US-UK interaction during major counterinsurgency campaigns since 1945, from Palestine to Iraq and Afghanistan, with a critical examination of the widely perceived special relationship that has been tested during these frequently difficult, protracted, and costly conflicts. An assessment of each nation's respective internal political discussions and diplomatic exchanges about the other's conflicts reveals that in actuality there is only a thin layer of specialness at work in wars that shaped the postcolonial balance of power, the fight against Communism in the Cold War, and the twenty-first-century "war on terror." This work is especially timely given that the US-UK relationship is once again under scrutiny because of the Trump administration's "America First" rhetoric and Britain's changing international relations as a result of Brexit. Counterinsurgency Wars and the Anglo-American Alliance will interest scholars and students of history, international relations, and security studies as well as policy practitioners in the field.

Chinese Soft Power (Paperback): Maria Repnikova Chinese Soft Power (Paperback)
Maria Repnikova
R584 Discovery Miles 5 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Element presents an overarching analysis of Chinese visions and practices of soft power. Maria Repnikova's analysis introduces the Chinese theorization of the idea of soft power, as well as its practical implementation across global contexts. The discussion concludes with suggestions for new directions for the field, drawing on the author's research on Chinese soft power in Africa.

Permanence Of Diplomacy, The: Studies Of Us Relations With Korea, Pakistan And Afghanistan (Hardcover): Juergen Kleiner Permanence Of Diplomacy, The: Studies Of Us Relations With Korea, Pakistan And Afghanistan (Hardcover)
Juergen Kleiner
R3,131 Discovery Miles 31 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This unique collection presents a comprehensive concept of diplomacy. It regards diplomacy as an institution for communication which, as far as content is concerned, functions as a dependent variable of foreign policy. Special attention is drawn to non-interference as an indispensable instrument to fight chaos in international relations. Articles on issues of foreign policy and diplomacy concerning some of the flashpoints of world politics in Asia, namely Korea, Pakistan and Afghanistan, follow. In some cases the interplay between foreign policy and diplomacy becomes visible. The difficulties of the United States to adept its policies toward the two Koreas in view of the ever changing relationship between these two countries are discussed. The diplomacy of estrangement between the United States and Pakistan gives an example how a relationship can deteriorate when no common ground for the basic aims of both sides is found. An attempt of diplomacy with the Taliban fundamentalists was made, but later replaced by fighting. The book also highlights other important developments in East and South Asia, such as the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Pakistan, the turmoil in Pakistan and the future of war-torn Afghanistan.

War and Peace in Africa's Great Lakes Region (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Gilbert M. Khadiagala War and Peace in Africa's Great Lakes Region (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Gilbert M. Khadiagala
R1,929 Discovery Miles 19 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book probes major security and governance trends in Africa's Great Lakes region since the 1990s. It examines political dynamics in key states - Burundi, the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda - as well as the role of international actors such as the AU, the EU, and the UN, thereby providing a unique perspective on efforts towards regional peace and prosperity. The authors suggest that while the region has made tremendous progress, it faces continuing challenges (including reversals in governance) that threaten future regional security.

R3,094 Discovery Miles 30 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What were the new People's Republic of China's policies to the Universal Postal Union in its early years? How did they help China promote its national interests in the world stage? Why did China train Albanian interns in the Cold War? Was it out of 'communist fraternity' or was it part of China's concerted public diplomacy efforts? And what role has China's medical assistance to developing countries, especially those in Africa, played in its foreign affairs?Penned by well-known international relations scholars from China, the eight essays in this volume attempt to answer those questions and more. Based on rich literature, including some newly declassified files from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this volume introduces some of the most interesting and significant, but lesser-known, episodes in the diplomatic history of the People's Republic of China, and tries to shed light on their implications and impact on China's diplomacy.

South African Foreign Policy - Identities, Intentions, and Directions (Hardcover, 1st Edition): David Hornsby, David R. Black South African Foreign Policy - Identities, Intentions, and Directions (Hardcover, 1st Edition)
David Hornsby, David R. Black; Edited by David R. Black, David Hornsby
R4,476 Discovery Miles 44 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book considers the identity, direction, and intentions embodied in post-apartheid South African Foreign Policy. It aims to deepen the understanding of this evolving post-apartheid foreign policy through an exploration of the nature and trajectory of key bilateral relationships from both the global ‘South’ (Brazil, China, Iran, the AU) and ‘North’ (Japan and the UK). This window on the country’s international relations enriches understanding of the normative and structural factors that influence not only South African foreign policy, but also those of the ‘emerging middle powers’ as they seek to position themselves as influential actors in international affairs. By sketching the contours of key South African relationships, the contributors offer illuminating insights into the cross-pressures shaping South African foreign policy. In addition, they also add depth to the emerging middle power concept by exploring four areas where the tendencies and tensions of emerging middle power foreign policies are apparent: regionalism, multilateralism, reform of global governance, and approach to moral leadership.

This book was previously published as a special issue of Commonwealth & Comparative Politics.

Old Diplomacy Revisited: A Study in the Modern History of Diplomatic Transformations (Hardcover, New): K. Weisbrode Old Diplomacy Revisited: A Study in the Modern History of Diplomatic Transformations (Hardcover, New)
K. Weisbrode
R1,370 Discovery Miles 13 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In historical terms, the Old Diplomacy is not really that old--many of its concepts and methods date to the mid-nineteenth century--while the practices of New Diplomacy emerged only a couple of generations later. Moreover, "Diplomacy 2.0" and other variants of the post-Cold War era do not depart significantly from their twentieth-century predecessor: their forms, particularly in technology, have changed, but their substance has not. In this succinct overview, historian Kenneth Weisbrode reminds us that to understand diplomatic transformations and their relevance to international affairs is to see diplomacy as an entrepreneurial art--and that, like most arts, it is adapted and re-adapted with reference to earlier forms. Diplomatic practice is always changing, and always continuous.

Global Cities, Governance and Diplomacy - The Urban Link (Paperback): Michele Acuto Global Cities, Governance and Diplomacy - The Urban Link (Paperback)
Michele Acuto
R1,493 Discovery Miles 14 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book illustrates the importance of global cities for world politics and highlights the diplomatic connections between cities and global governance. While there is a growing body of literature concerned with explaining the transformations of the international order, little theorisation has taken into account the key metropolises of our time as elements of these revolutions. The volume seeks to fill this gap by demonstrating how global cities have a pervasive agency in contemporary global governance. The book argues that looking at global cities can bring about three fundamental advantages on traditional IR paradigms. First, it facilitates an eclectic turn towards more nuanced analyses of world politics. Second, it widens the horizon of the discipline through a multiscalar image of global governance. Third, it underscores how global cities have a strategic diplomatic positioning when it comes to core contemporary challenges such as climate change. This book will be of much interest to students of urban studies, global governance, diplomacy and international relations in general.

Iran's Nuclear Program and International Law - From Confrontation to Accord (Hardcover): Daniel H. Joyner Iran's Nuclear Program and International Law - From Confrontation to Accord (Hardcover)
Daniel H. Joyner
R2,765 Discovery Miles 27 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an international legal analysis of the most important questions regarding Iran's nuclear program since 2002. Setting these legal questions in their historical and diplomatic context, this book aims to clarify how the relevant sources of international law - including primarily the 1968 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and IAEA treaty law - should be properly applied in the context of the Iran case. It provides an instructional case study of the application of these sources of international law, the lessons which can be applied to inform both the on-going legal and diplomatic dynamics surrounding the Iran nuclear dispute itself, as well as similar future cases. Some questions raised regard the watershed diplomatic accord reached between Iran and Western states in July, 2015, known as the Joint Comprehensive Program of Action. The answers will be of interests to diplomats and academics, as well as to anyone who is interested in understanding international law's application to this sensitive dispute in international relations.

A Tale of Two Eagles - The US-Mexico Bilateral Defense Relationship Post Cold War (Hardcover): Craig A. Deare A Tale of Two Eagles - The US-Mexico Bilateral Defense Relationship Post Cold War (Hardcover)
Craig A. Deare
R3,204 Discovery Miles 32 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United States and Mexico share a history shaped in the 19th century by numerous US forces interventions into Mexican territory and US expropriation of considerable swaths of Mexican territory. However, in spite of structural impediments and a history of resentment by Mexico of US intervention into its affairs and territory, the levels of cooperation and understanding slowly began to improve following a series of international and domestic factors. The decline of the former Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall at a global level, coupled with major political and economic challenges and reforms within Mexico are a starting point from which to assess the evolution of the bilateral defense relationship between the United States and Mexico. The American and Mexican militaries have evolved differently over the past 100 years and they each have very different responsibilities, mission sets, orientations, and capabilities. Yet in recent years, the Mexican armed forces have cooperated more closely with their US counterparts. This may be due to explicit direction coming from senior levels of the Mexican government and to operational requirements of the armed forces themselves as they seek to increase their capability and capacity to confront the growing levels in drug trafficking related violence. Today, both countries are dealing with the effects of this increased violence and insecurity in Mexico. Relying primarily on one-on-one interviews with senior practitioners and analysts on both sides of the border, the text examines the evolution of the U.S.-Mexican bilateral defense relationship to better understand how and why this unique relationship has improved, in fits and starts, over the past 25 years. It offers a new understanding of how defense policymakers from each respective country perceive the other, as well as how the lack of trust and understanding between the two neighbors has delayed greater cooperation.

Cultural Diplomacy: Beyond the National Interest? (Hardcover): Ien Ang, Yudhishthir Isar, Phillip Mar Cultural Diplomacy: Beyond the National Interest? (Hardcover)
Ien Ang, Yudhishthir Isar, Phillip Mar
R4,356 Discovery Miles 43 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cultural Diplomacy: Beyond the National Interest? is the first book bringing together, from the perspective of the cultural disciplines, scholarship that locates contemporary cultural diplomacy practices within their social, political, and ideological contexts, while examining the different forces that drive them. The contributions to this book have two methodologies: the first, to deconstruct and demystify cultural diplomacy, notably the 'hype' that accompanies it, especially when it is yoked to the notion of 'soft power'; the second, to better understand how contemporary cultural diplomacy actually operates. In applying a cultural lens to the question, this book probes whether there can be such a thing as a cultural diplomacy 'beyond the national interest'. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Cultural Policy.

The EU's Human Rights Dialogue with China - Quiet Diplomacy and its Limits (Paperback): Katrin Kinzelbach The EU's Human Rights Dialogue with China - Quiet Diplomacy and its Limits (Paperback)
Katrin Kinzelbach
R1,610 Discovery Miles 16 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The European Union uses a confidential, institutionalized Dialogue to raise human rights concerns with China, but little is publicly known about its set-up, its substance, its development over time and its impact. This book provides the first detailed reconstruction and assessment of the EU's responses to human rights violations in China from 1995 to the present day. Using classified documents in the EU's historical archives and interviews with diplomats, officials and human rights experts in Europe, China and the United States, Kinzelbach lifts the veil of secrecy on the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue and provides a rare insight into how the European Union and China conduct quiet diplomacy on human rights. The book reconstructs the evolution of the Dialogue and the EU's internal debate on the merits of quiet diplomacy, and draws comparisons with the approach of other actors, notably that of the United States. In doing so, the EU's relative impact is concluded to be tenuous if not counter-productive. The book also chronicles and analyzes numerous human rights concerns that were raised in the period, ranging from structural issues to individual cases. This ground-breaking, in-depth case study will be of interest to students and scholars of international politics, human rights, international law, EU politics, especially the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Chinese politics.

Woodrow Wilson - British Perspectives, 1912-21 (Hardcover): G. R Conyne Woodrow Wilson - British Perspectives, 1912-21 (Hardcover)
G. R Conyne
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book shows the strong influence of judgements made of Wilson by the British diplomatists during the early years of his national prominence (1912-1914) on the way the British dealt with Wilson at the Paris Peace Conference. It also shows the strong effect which practitioners of the so-called "Old Diplomacy" had on Lloyd George on this key issue of wartime and peace diplomacy. It shows that the British diplomatists viewed Wilson as a very successful American politician, but not as a prophet, or saviour. The religious imagery used by certain historians and more junior British diplomats, such as Harold Nicolson and John Maynard Keynes does not reflect the views of their more senior colleagues.

Armed Forces and Insurgents in Modern Asia (Hardcover): Kaushik Roy, Sourish Saha Armed Forces and Insurgents in Modern Asia (Hardcover)
Kaushik Roy, Sourish Saha
R4,643 Discovery Miles 46 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume traces the historical roots and evolution of insurgencies and counter-insurgencies in modern Asia. Focusing on armed rebellions and use of armed forces by both Western powers and indigenous states from the nineteenth century till present day, the volume unravels the problematic of change-continuity and addresses key questions on the nature of warfare. The book looks at eight different regions of Asia: US counter-insurgencies in Philippines; the British initiative in Indonesia and independent Indonesia's counter-insurgency against its domestic populace; post-World War II Malaya; French and US war in Vietnam; British and Indian counter-insurgencies in North-East India between the nineteenth and early twenty-first century; Indian and Sri Lankan operations in Sri Lanka during late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; British and US-NATO war in Afghanistan from the nineteenth century till 2014; and British and US counter-insurgency in Iraq during the twentieth and first two decades of the twenty-first centuries. The volume will greatly interest scholars and researchers of modern Asian history, military and strategic studies, politics and international relations as well as government institutions and think-tanks.

Secret Diplomacy - Concepts, Contexts and Cases (Hardcover): Corneliu Bjola, Stuart Murray Secret Diplomacy - Concepts, Contexts and Cases (Hardcover)
Corneliu Bjola, Stuart Murray
R4,639 Discovery Miles 46 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume investigates secret diplomacy with the aim of understanding its role in shaping foreign policy. Recent events, including covert intelligence gathering operations, accusations of spying, and the leaking of sensitive government documents, have demonstrated that secrecy endures as a crucial, yet overlooked, aspect of international diplomacy. The book brings together different research programmes and views on secret diplomacy and integrates them into a coherent analytical framework, thereby filling an important gap in the literature. The aim is to stimulate, generate and direct the further development of theoretical understandings of secret diplomacy by highlighting 'gaps' in existing bodies of knowledge. To this end, the volume is structured around three distinct themes: concepts, contexts and cases. The first section elaborates on the different meanings and manifestations of the concept; the second part examines basic contexts that underpin the practice of secret diplomacy; while the third section presents a series of empirical cases of particular relevance for contemporary diplomatic practice. While the fundamental conditions diplomacy seeks to overcome - alienation, estrangement and separation - are imbued with distrust and secrecy, this volume highlights that, if anything, secret diplomacy is a vital, if misunderstood and unfairly criticised, aspect of diplomacy. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy, intelligence studies, foreign policy and IR in general.
