Quaternion and Clifford Fourier Transforms and Wavelets (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Eckhard Hitzer, Stephen J. Sangwine Quaternion and Clifford Fourier Transforms and Wavelets (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Eckhard Hitzer, Stephen J. Sangwine
R5,823 Discovery Miles 58 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Quaternion and Clifford Fourier and wavelet transformations generalize the classical theory to higher dimensions and are becoming increasingly important in diverse areas of mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering. This edited volume presents the state of the art in these hypercomplex transformations. The Clifford algebras unify Hamilton's quaternions with Grassmann algebra. A Clifford algebra is a complete algebra of a vector space and all its subspaces including the measurement of volumes and dihedral angles between any pair of subspaces. Quaternion and Clifford algebras permit the systematic generalization of many known concepts. This book provides comprehensive insights into current developments and applications including their performance and evaluation. Mathematically, it indicates where further investigation is required. For instance, attention is drawn to the matrix isomorphisms for hypercomplex algebras, which will help readers to see that software implementations are within our grasp. It also contributes to a growing unification of ideas and notation across the expanding field of hypercomplex transforms and wavelets. The first chapter provides a historical background and an overview of the relevant literature, and shows how the contributions that follow relate to each other and to prior work. The book will be a valuable resource for graduate students as well as for scientists and engineers.

A Cp-Theory Problem Book - Compactness in Function Spaces (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Vladimir V. Tkachuk A Cp-Theory Problem Book - Compactness in Function Spaces (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Vladimir V. Tkachuk
R1,666 Discovery Miles 16 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This third volume in Vladimir Tkachuk's series on Cp-theory problems applies all modern methods of Cp-theory to study compactness-like properties in function spaces and introduces the reader to the theory of compact spaces widely used in Functional Analysis. The text is designed to bring a dedicated reader from basic topological principles to the frontiers of modern research covering a wide variety of topics in Cp-theory and general topology at the professional level. The first volume, Topological and Function Spaces (c) 2011, provided an introduction from scratch to Cp-theory and general topology, preparing the reader for a professional understanding of Cp-theory in the last section of its main text. The second volume, Special Features of Function Spaces (c) 2014, continued from the first, giving reasonably complete coverage of Cp-theory, systematically introducing each of the major topics and providing 500 carefully selected problems and exercises with complete solutions. This third volume is self-contained and works in tandem with the other two, containing five hundred carefully selected problems and solutions. It can also be considered as an introduction to advanced set theory and descriptive set theory, presenting diverse topics of the theory of function spaces with the topology of point wise convergence, or Cp-theory which exists at the intersection of topological algebra, functional analysis and general topology.

Pseudodifferential Operators with Automorphic Symbols (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Andr e Unterberger Pseudodifferential Operators with Automorphic Symbols (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Andr e Unterberger
R1,540 Discovery Miles 15 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main results of this book combine pseudo differential analysis with modular form theory. The methods rely for the most part on explicit spectral theory and the extended use of special functions. The starting point is a notion of modular distribution in the plane, which will be new to most readers and relates under the Radon transformation to the classical one of modular form of the non-holomorphic type. Modular forms of the holomorphic type are addressed too in a more concise way, within a general scheme dealing with quantization theory and elementary, but novel, representation-theoretic concepts.

Offbeat Integral Geometry on Symmetric Spaces (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Valery V. Volchkov, Vitaly V. Volchkov Offbeat Integral Geometry on Symmetric Spaces (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Valery V. Volchkov, Vitaly V. Volchkov
R4,772 Discovery Miles 47 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book demonstrates the development of integral geometry on domains of homogeneous spaces since 1990. It covers a wide range of topics, including analysis on multidimensional Euclidean domains and Riemannian symmetric spaces of arbitrary ranks as well as recent work on phase space and the Heisenberg group. The book includes many significant recent results, some of them hitherto unpublished, among which can be pointed out uniqueness theorems for various classes of functions, far-reaching generalizations of the two-radii problem, the modern versions of the Pompeiu problem, and explicit reconstruction formulae in problems of integral geometry. These results are intriguing and useful in various fields of contemporary mathematics. The proofs given are "minimal" in the sense that they involve only those concepts and facts which are indispensable for the essence of the subject. Each chapter provides a historical perspective on the results presented and includes many interesting open problems. Readers will find this book relevant to harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces, invariant spaces theory, integral transforms on symmetric spaces and the Heisenberg group, integral equations, special functions, and transmutation operators theory.

Methods of Nonlinear Analysis - Applications to Differential Equations (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2013): Pavel Drabek, Jaroslav Milota Methods of Nonlinear Analysis - Applications to Differential Equations (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2013)
Pavel Drabek, Jaroslav Milota
R2,593 Discovery Miles 25 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, fundamental methods of nonlinear analysis are introduced, discussed and illustrated in straightforward examples. Each method considered is motivated and explained in its general form, but presented in an abstract framework as comprehensively as possible. A large number of methods are applied to boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. In this edition we have made minor revisions, added new material and organized the content slightly differently. In particular, we included evolutionary equations and differential equations on manifolds. The applications to partial differential equations follow every abstract framework of the method in question. The text is structured in two levels: a self-contained basic level and an advanced level - organized in appendices - for the more experienced reader. The last chapter contains more involved material and can be skipped by those new to the field. This book serves as both a textbook for graduate-level courses and a reference book for mathematicians, engineers and applied scientists

Applications of q-Calculus in Operator Theory (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Ali Aral, Vijay Gupta, Ravi P. Agarwal Applications of q-Calculus in Operator Theory (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Ali Aral, Vijay Gupta, Ravi P. Agarwal
R2,356 Discovery Miles 23 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The approximation of functions by linear positive operators is an important research topic in general mathematics and it also provides powerful tools to application areas such as computer-aided geometric design, numerical analysis, and solutions of differential equations. q-Calculus is a generalization of many subjects, such as hypergeometric series, complex analysis, and particle physics. This monograph is an introduction to combining approximation theory and q-Calculus with applications, by using well- known operators. The presentation is systematic and the authors include a brief summary of the notations and basic definitions of q-calculus before delving into more advanced material. The many applications of q-calculus in the theory of approximation, especially on various operators, which includes convergence of operators to functions in real and complex domain forms the gist of the book. This book is suitable for researchers and students in mathematics, physics and engineering, and for professionals who would enjoy exploring the host of mathematical techniques and ideas that are collected and discussed in the book.

The Functional Analysis of Quantum Information Theory - A Collection of Notes Based on Lectures by Gilles Pisier, K. R. Parthasarathy, Vern Paulsen and Andreas Winter (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Ved Prakash Gupta, Prabha Mandayam, V.S. Sunder
R1,844 Discovery Miles 18 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides readers with a concise introduction to current studies on operator-algebras and their generalizations, operator spaces and operator systems, with a special focus on their application in quantum information science. This basic framework for the mathematical formulation of quantum information can be traced back to the mathematical work of John von Neumann, one of the pioneers of operator algebras, which forms the underpinning of most current mathematical treatments of the quantum theory, besides being one of the most dynamic areas of twentieth century functional analysis. Today, von Neumann's foresight finds expression in the rapidly growing field of quantum information theory. These notes gather the content of lectures given by a very distinguished group of mathematicians and quantum information theorists, held at the IMSc in Chennai some years ago, and great care has been taken to present the material as a primer on the subject matter. Starting from the basic definitions of operator spaces and operator systems, this text proceeds to discuss several important theorems including Stinespring's dilation theorem for completely positive maps and Kirchberg's theorem on tensor products of C*-algebras. It also takes a closer look at the abstract characterization of operator systems and, motivated by the requirements of different tensor products in quantum information theory, the theory of tensor products in operator systems is discussed in detail. On the quantum information side, the book offers a rigorous treatment of quantifying entanglement in bipartite quantum systems, and moves on to review four different areas in which ideas from the theory of operator systems and operator algebras play a natural role: the issue of zero-error communication over quantum channels, the strong subadditivity property of quantum entropy, the different norms on quantum states and the corresponding induced norms on quantum channels, and, lastly, the applications of matrix-valued random variables in the quantum information setting.

Quantum Waveguides (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Pavel Exner, Hynek Kovarik Quantum Waveguides (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Pavel Exner, Hynek Kovarik
R6,087 Discovery Miles 60 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph explains the theory of quantum waveguides, that is, dynamics of quantum particles confined to regions in the form of tubes, layers, networks, etc. The focus is on relations between the confinement geometry on the one hand and the spectral and scattering properties of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonians on the other. Perturbations of such operators, in particular, by external fields are also considered. The volume provides a unique summary of twenty-five years of research activity in this area and indicates ways in which the theory can develop further. The book is fairly self-contained. While it requires some broader mathematical physics background, all the basic concepts are properly explained and proofs of most theorems are given in detail, so there is no need for additional sources. Without a parallel in the literature, the monograph by Exner and Kovarik guides the reader through this new and exciting field.

Graduate and post-graduate students, as well as specialists working in the fields of partial differential equations, functional analysis, operator theory and mathematical physics will find this book particularly valuable.

Integral Equations with Difference Kernels on Finite Intervals - Second Edition, Revised and Extended (Hardcover, 2nd revised... Integral Equations with Difference Kernels on Finite Intervals - Second Edition, Revised and Extended (Hardcover, 2nd revised and extended ed. 2015)
Lev A. Sakhnovich
R2,503 Discovery Miles 25 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on solving integral equations with difference kernels on finite intervals. The corresponding problem on the semiaxis was previously solved by N. Wiener-E. Hopf and by M.G. Krein. The problem on finite intervals, though significantly more difficult, may be solved using our method of operator identities. This method is also actively employed in inverse spectral problems, operator factorization and nonlinear integral equations. Applications of the obtained results to optimal synthesis, light scattering, diffraction, and hydrodynamics problems are discussed in this book, which also describes how the theory of operators with difference kernels is applied to stable processes and used to solve the famous M. Kac problems on stable processes. In this second edition these results are extensively generalized and include the case of all Levy processes. We present the convolution expression for the well-known Ito formula of the generator operator, a convolution expression that has proven to be fruitful. Furthermore we have added a new chapter on triangular representation, which is closely connected with previous results and includes a new important class of operators with non-trivial invariant subspaces. Numerous formulations and proofs have now been improved, and the bibliography has been updated to reflect more recent additions to the body of literature.

Linear Stochastic Systems - A Geometric Approach to Modeling, Estimation and Identification (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Anders... Linear Stochastic Systems - A Geometric Approach to Modeling, Estimation and Identification (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Anders Lindquist, Giorgio Picci
R4,922 Discovery Miles 49 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a treatise on the theory and modeling of second-order stationary processes, including an exposition on selected application areas that are important in the engineering and applied sciences. The foundational issues regarding stationary processes dealt with in the beginning of the book have a long history, starting in the 1940s with the work of Kolmogorov, Wiener, Cramer and his students, in particular Wold, and have since been refined and complemented by many others. Problems concerning the filtering and modeling of stationary random signals and systems have also been addressed and studied, fostered by the advent of modern digital computers, since the fundamental work of R.E. Kalman in the early 1960s. The book offers a unified and logically consistent view of the subject based on simple ideas from Hilbert space geometry and coordinate-free thinking. In this framework, the concepts of stochastic state space and state space modeling, based on the notion of the conditional independence of past and future flows of the relevant signals, are revealed to be fundamentally unifying ideas. The book, based on over 30 years of original research, represents a valuable contribution that will inform the fields of stochastic modeling, estimation, system identification, and time series analysis for decades to come. It also provides the mathematical tools needed to grasp and analyze the structures of algorithms in stochastic systems theory.

Generalized Adjoint Systems (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Demetrios Serakos Generalized Adjoint Systems (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Demetrios Serakos
R1,749 Discovery Miles 17 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book defines and develops the generalized adjoint of an input-output system. It is the result of a theoretical development and examination of the generalized adjoint concept and the conditions under which systems analysis using adjoints is valid. Results developed in this book are useful aids for the analysis and modeling of physical systems, including the development of guidance and control algorithms and in developing simulations. The generalized adjoint system is defined and is patterned similarly to adjoints of bounded linear transformations. Next the elementary properties of the generalized adjoint system are derived. For a space of input-output systems, a generalized adjoint map from this space of systems to the space of generalized adjoints is defined. Then properties of the generalized adjoint map are derived. Afterward the author demonstrates that the inverse of an input-output system may be represented in terms of the generalized adjoint. The use of generalized adjoints to determine bounds for undesired inputs such as noise and disturbance to an input-output system is presented and methods which parallel adjoints in linear systems theory are utilized. Finally, an illustrative example is presented which utilizes an integral operator representation for the system mapping.

Mathematical Methods in Physics - Distributions, Hilbert Space Operators, Variational Methods, and Applications in Quantum... Mathematical Methods in Physics - Distributions, Hilbert Space Operators, Variational Methods, and Applications in Quantum Physics (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2015)
Philippe Blanchard, Erwin Bruning
R3,597 Discovery Miles 35 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second edition of this textbook presents the basic mathematical knowledge and skills that are needed for courses on modern theoretical physics, such as those on quantum mechanics, classical and quantum field theory, and related areas. The authors stress that learning mathematical physics is not a passive process and include numerous detailed proofs, examples, and over 200 exercises, as well as hints linking mathematical concepts and results to the relevant physical concepts and theories. All of the material from the first edition has been updated, and five new chapters have been added on such topics as distributions, Hilbert space operators, and variational methods. The text is divided into three parts: - Part I: A brief introduction to (Schwartz) distribution theory. Elements from the theories of ultra distributions and (Fourier) hyperfunctions are given in addition to some deeper results for Schwartz distributions, thus providing a rather comprehensive introduction to the theory of generalized functions. Basic properties and methods for distributions are developed with applications to constant coefficient ODEs and PDEs. The relation between distributions and holomorphic functions is considered, as well as basic properties of Sobolev spaces. - Part II: Fundamental facts about Hilbert spaces. The basic theory of linear (bounded and unbounded) operators in Hilbert spaces and special classes of linear operators - compact, Hilbert-Schmidt, trace class, and Schroedinger operators, as needed in quantum physics and quantum information theory - are explored. This section also contains a detailed spectral analysis of all major classes of linear operators, including completeness of generalized eigenfunctions, as well as of (completely) positive mappings, in particular quantum operations. - Part III: Direct methods of the calculus of variations and their applications to boundary- and eigenvalue-problems for linear and nonlinear partial differential operators. The authors conclude with a discussion of the Hohenberg-Kohn variational principle. The appendices contain proofs of more general and deeper results, including completions, basic facts about metrizable Hausdorff locally convex topological vector spaces, Baire's fundamental results and their main consequences, and bilinear functionals. Mathematical Methods in Physics is aimed at a broad community of graduate students in mathematics, mathematical physics, quantum information theory, physics and engineering, as well as researchers in these disciplines. Expanded content and relevant updates will make this new edition a valuable resource for those working in these disciplines.

Evolution PDEs with Nonstandard Growth Conditions - Existence, Uniqueness, Localization, Blow-up (Hardcover, 2015 ed.):... Evolution PDEs with Nonstandard Growth Conditions - Existence, Uniqueness, Localization, Blow-up (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Stanislav Antontsev, Sergey Shmarev
R4,963 Discovery Miles 49 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph offers the reader a treatment of the theory of evolution PDEs with nonstandard growth conditions. This class includes parabolic and hyperbolic equations with variable or anisotropic nonlinear structure. We develop methods for the study of such equations and present a detailed account of recent results. An overview of other approaches to the study of PDEs of this kind is provided. The presentation is focused on the issues of existence and uniqueness of solutions in appropriate function spaces and on the study of the specific qualitative properties of solutions, such as localization in space and time, extinction in a finite time and blow-up, or nonexistence of global in time solutions. Special attention is paid to the study of the properties intrinsic to solutions of equations with nonstandard growth.

Fixed Point Theory in Modular Function Spaces (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Mohamed A Khamsi, Wojciech M. Kozlowski Fixed Point Theory in Modular Function Spaces (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Mohamed A Khamsi, Wojciech M. Kozlowski
R2,540 Discovery Miles 25 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph provides a concise introduction to the main results and methods of the fixed point theory in modular function spaces. Modular function spaces are natural generalizations of both function and sequence variants of many important spaces like Lebesgue, Orlicz, Musielak-Orlicz, Lorentz, Orlicz-Lorentz, Calderon-Lozanovskii spaces, and others. In most cases, particularly in applications to integral operators, approximation and fixed point results, modular type conditions are much more natural and can be more easily verified than their metric or norm counterparts. There are also important results that can be proved only using the apparatus of modular function spaces. The material is presented in a systematic and rigorous manner that allows readers to grasp the key ideas and to gain a working knowledge of the theory. Despite the fact that the work is largely self-contained, extensive bibliographic references are included, and open problems and further development directions are suggested when applicable. The monograph is targeted mainly at the mathematical research community but it is also accessible to graduate students interested in functional analysis and its applications. It could also serve as a text for an advanced course in fixed point theory of mappings acting in modular function spaces.

Pseudo-Differential Operators, Generalized Functions and Asymptotics (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Shahla Molahajloo, Stevan... Pseudo-Differential Operators, Generalized Functions and Asymptotics (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Shahla Molahajloo, Stevan Pilipovic, Joachim Toft, M.W. Wong
R4,078 Discovery Miles 40 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume consists of twenty peer-reviewed papers from the special session on pseudodifferential operators and the special session on generalized functions and asymptotics at the Eighth Congress of ISAAC held at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia in Moscow on August 22-27, 2011. The category of papers on pseudo-differential operators contains such topics as elliptic operators assigned to diffeomorphisms of smooth manifolds, analysis on singular manifolds with edges, heat kernels and Green functions of sub-Laplacians on the Heisenberg group and Lie groups with more complexities than but closely related to the Heisenberg group, Lp-boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on the torus, and pseudo-differential operators related to time-frequency analysis. The second group of papers contains various classes of distributions and algebras of generalized functions with applications in linear and nonlinear differential equations, initial value problems and boundary value problems, stochastic and Malliavin-type differential equations. This second group of papers are related to the third collection of papers via the setting of Colombeau-type spaces and algebras in which microlocal analysis is developed by means of techniques in asymptotics. The volume contains the synergies of the three areas treated and is a useful complement to volumes 155, 164, 172, 189, 205 and 213 published in the same series in, respectively, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
