Behaviour, Crime & Legal Processes - A Guide for Forensic Practitioners (Hardcover): J. McGuire Behaviour, Crime & Legal Processes - A Guide for Forensic Practitioners (Hardcover)
J. McGuire
R5,828 Discovery Miles 58 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The application of psychological principles to research and practice in crime prevention, detection, legal processes and offender treatment is a feature of the growing number of advanced undergraduate courses and graduate courses, and professional training programmes. This book reflects the need to provide an overview of psychological knowledge and its forensic applications and implications, to psychology students and its forensic applications and implications, to psychology students and to related professional disciplines such as psychiatry, nursing, policing, law, prison work and probation.
The Editors are very well known academics and clinicians. The chapters are written by contributors who are recognised leaders in their own fields, and they have provided accessible accounts of the applications and implications of behavioural sciences for their peers, and for professionals and students in other disciplines. Multi-professional case work and innovative approaches to crime and offenders are being supported by research, by poicy and by legislation. There is a growing need to provide a wide range of professionals with a common framework and knowledge base to aid their shared understanding of crime and offenders, and of related interventions.
""Behaviour, Crime and Legal Processes" will be of great interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, lawyers and others concerned with understanding and treating offenders. The book is readable, scholarly and wide-ranging, covering legal issues, psychology and the police, witness evidence, decision-making in court, criminological theories, risk assessment and the treatment of mentally disordered and sex offenders." - Professor DavidFarrington, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, UK

Interdisciplinarity for the 21st Century - Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Mathematics and its Connections to... Interdisciplinarity for the 21st Century - Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Mathematics and its Connections to Arts and Sciences, Moncton 2009 (Hardcover)
Bharath Sriraman, Viktor Freiman
R3,020 Discovery Miles 30 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interdisciplinarity has become increasingly important for emergent professions of the 21st century yet there is a dearth of systematic studies aimed at implementing it in the school and university curricula. The Mathematics and its Connections to the Arts and Sciences (MACAS ) group places Mathematics as a vehicle through which deep and meaningful connections can be forged with the Arts and the Sciences and as a means of promoting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary thinking traits amongst students. The Third International Symposium held by the MACAS group in Moncton, Canada in 2009 included numerous initiatives and ideas for interdisciplinarity that are implementable in both the school and university setting. The chapters in this book cover interdisciplinary links with mathematics found in the domains of culture, art, aesthetics, music, cognition, history, philosophy, engineering, technology and science with contributors from Canada, U.S, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, Iran and Poland amongst others.

Ralph L. Disney, Teunis J. Ott
R1,733 Discovery Miles 17 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

These two volumes are the Proceedings of the first special interest meeting instigated and organized by the joint Technical Section and College in Applied Probability of ORSA and THlS. This meeting, which took place January 5-7, 1981 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, had the same name as these Proceedings: Applied Probability-Computer Science, the Interface. The goal of that conference was to achieve a meeting of, and a cross fertilization between, two groups of researchers who, from different starting points, had come to work on similar problems, often developing similar methodologies and tools. One of these groups are the applied probabilists, many of whom consider their field an offspring of mathematics, and who find their motivation in many areas of application. The other is that group of computer scientists who, over the years, have found an increasing need in their work for the use of probabilistic models. The most visible area of common methodology between these two groups is networks of queues, Hhich by itself could have been the theme of an entire conference. FunctionQl areas which are, or are becoming, sources of exciting problems are computer performance analysis, data base analysis, analysis of communication protocols, data networks, and mixed voice-data telephone networks. The reader can add to this list by going through the papers in these Proceedings.

Art in Zion - The Genesis of Modern National Art in Jewish Palestine (Paperback): Dalia Manor Art in Zion - The Genesis of Modern National Art in Jewish Palestine (Paperback)
Dalia Manor
R1,690 Discovery Miles 16 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Art in Zion deals with the link between art and national ideology and specifically between the artistic activity that emerged in Jewish Palestine in the first decades of the twentieth century and the Zionist movement. In order to examine the development of national art in Jewish Palestine, the book focuses on direct and indirect expressions of Zionist ideology in the artistic activity in the yishuv (the Jewish community in Palestine). In particular, the book explores two major phases in the early development of Jewish art in Palestine: the activity of the Bezalel School of Art and Crafts, and the emergence during the 1920s of a group of artists known as the Modernists.

Deciphering Science and Technology - The Social Relations of Expertise (Hardcover): Maureen McNeil, Ian Varcoe, Steven Yearley Deciphering Science and Technology - The Social Relations of Expertise (Hardcover)
Maureen McNeil, Ian Varcoe, Steven Yearley
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As science and technology have pervaded modern life to an ever greater degree, social scientists have been led to find questions of the causes and consequences of 'expert' knowledge arising in places that would have been felt unlikely hitherto. Varcoe, McNeil and Yearley's book assembles nine exemplary studies by sociologists, each of which explores an aspect of the current scientific-technological 'revolution'. Some popular ideas are challenged. So, too, implicitly, are certain large-scale social scientific theories claiming to have discerned in science and technology an overall meaning.

Taiwan, Humanitarianism and Global Governance (Hardcover): Alain Guilloux Taiwan, Humanitarianism and Global Governance (Hardcover)
Alain Guilloux
R4,370 Discovery Miles 43 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this unique book, Alain Guilloux uses four major elements of governance - namely norms, actors, processes, and outcomes - to examine Taiwan 's national governance as well as its participation in global governance in relation to humanitarian aid.

Including case studies on Taiwan 's application to become an observer to the WHO, and its foreign-aid policy and practice dealing with disease outbreaks and natural disasters, Guilloux explores the complexities and dilemmas of providing humanitarian aid to people in need and distress. Taking into account Taiwan's unclear status in the global arena, and how in its efforts Taiwan faces both international isolation and opposition from the People's Republic of China at multiple levels.

Taiwan, Humanitarianism and Global Governance will be of interest for scholars of Chinese studies, Taiwan Studies, East Asian politics and International Relations, and environmental politics and humanitarian studies.

New Racism - Revisiting Researcher Accountabilities (Hardcover, 2010): Norma Romm New Racism - Revisiting Researcher Accountabilities (Hardcover, 2010)
Norma Romm
R5,222 R4,582 Discovery Miles 45 820 Save R640 (12%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book develops a debate around responsible social inquiry into new racism. A variety of ways of researching new forms of racism (for example, aversive, modern, cultural, purportedly color-blind, and new racism) are addressed. Experiments that have been undertaken to inquire into group identity and people's implicit bias in relation to those perceived as "other" are critically explored and their potential consequences reconsidered. The book also critically explores survey research, which, it is argued, can serve to reinforce the notion of the existence of ethnoracial groups with defined boundaries that inhere in social life. The book considers interviewing (including focus group interviewing) and case study research (including participant observation/ethnography) in terms of possibilities for moving beyond new forms of racism. Action research (defined by the understanding of an inextricable link between knowing and acting) is examined in-depth in terms of the hopes to "make a difference" at the moment of inquiry. Types of retroductive logic that are used to examine underlying structures that arguably unduly constrain people's life chances and render human relationships inhumane are also explored. The book draws together the different arguments; and it proposes ways in which the design of research into new racism can better approached as well as ways in which dialogue around processes of inquiry and the products thereof can be better fostered. Suggestions for nurturing humane social relationships that provide for transcultural meaning-making are threaded through the text.

human practices? How are we to morally evaluate technology developments that have open horizons, encompass uncertainties, and lack control? Technology is in- uential on society; technological innovations act upon the perception of ourselves, the world, and our relation with fellow humans and other objects. Technology is changing everything we do by creating new entities (such as software, nanop- ticles, or Internet), by changing the scale of activities (e. g. vast amounts of data about people can be stored and analysed, and not infrequently without people - ing aware of this), by generating new kinds of knowledge (for instance about i- nesses, the human genome and so on). Technologies, as a consequence, impinge upon our morality and for this reason an ethics of technology should not wait passively until moral problems arise and not only focus on identi ed and exi- ing moral problems, but contemplate technology developments and possible - pacts proactively. However, this is easier said than done, because a prospective and proactive evaluation of technology developments is complicated by complexity and uncertainty. The uncertainty of technology development is closely related to one of the str- ing features of technology, namely what Jim Moor has coined logical malleability. (1985, 269) Technological devices are logically malleable in that they can be shaped to do any activity that can be characterised in terms of logical operations.

Modeling and Adaptive Nonlinear Control of Electric Motors (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Farshad Khorrami, Prashanth Krishnamurthy,... Modeling and Adaptive Nonlinear Control of Electric Motors (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Farshad Khorrami, Prashanth Krishnamurthy, Hemant Melkote
R6,024 Discovery Miles 60 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, modeling and control design of electric motors, namely step motors, brushless DC motors and induction motors, are considered. The book focuses on recent advances on feedback control designs for various types of electric motors, with a slight emphasis on stepper motors. For this purpose, the authors explore modeling of these devices to the extent needed to provide a high-performance controller, but at the same time one amenable to model-based nonlinear designs. The control designs focus primarily on recent robust adaptive nonlinear controllers to attain high performance. It is shown that the adaptive robust nonlinear controller on its own achieves reasonably good performance without requiring the exact knowledge of motor parameters. While carefully tuned classical controllers often achieve required performance in many applications, it is hoped that the advocated robust and adaptive designs will lead to standard universal controllers with minimal need for fine tuning of control parameters.

Making Economics Public - The Hows and Whys of Communicating Markets and Models (Paperback): Vicki Macknight, Fabien Medvecky Making Economics Public - The Hows and Whys of Communicating Markets and Models (Paperback)
Vicki Macknight, Fabien Medvecky
R1,203 Discovery Miles 12 030 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Economics – macro, micro and mysterious – is integral to everyday life. But despite its importance for personal and collective decision making, it is a discipline often viewed as technical, arcane and inaccessible and thus overlooked in public discourse. This book is a call to arms to bring the discipline of economics more into the public domain. It calls on economists to think about how to make their knowledge of the economics public. And it calls on those who specialise in communicating expert knowledge to help us learn to communicate about economics. The book brings together scholars and practitioners working at the early stages of an emerging field: the public communication of, and public engagement with, economics. Through a series of short essays from academics and practitioners, the book has two key goals: first and foremost, it will make a case for why we need to make economics public and for the importance of having a clear vision of what it means to make economics public. Secondly, it suggests some ways that this can be done featuring contributions from practitioners, including economists, who are engaging audiences in newspapers, museums and beyond. This book is essential reading for those in economics with an interest in making economics public and those already in the many fields dedicated to communicating expert knowledge in public spaces who have an interest in where economics can fit.

The Discourse of Broadcast News - A Linguistic Approach (Hardcover): Martin Montgomery The Discourse of Broadcast News - A Linguistic Approach (Hardcover)
Martin Montgomery
R4,376 Discovery Miles 43 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this timely and important study Martin Montgomery unpicks the inside workings of what must still be considered the dominant news medium: broadcast news. Drawing principally on linguistics, but multidisciplinary in its scope, The Discourse of Broadcast News demonstrates that news programmes are as much about showing as telling, as much about ordinary bystanders as about experts, and as much about personal testimony as calling politicians to account. Using close analysis of the discourse of television and radio news, the book reveals how important conventions for presenting news are changing, with significant consequences for the ways audiences understand its truthfulness. Fully illustrated with examples and including detailed examination of the high profile case of ex-BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan, The Discourse of Broadcast News provides a comprehensive study which will challenge our current assumptions about the news. The Discourse of Broadcast News will be a key resource for anyone researching the news, whether they be students of language and linguistics, media studies or communication studies.

Handbook of Quality of Life in the Enlarged European Union (Hardcover): Jens Alber, Tony Fahey, Chiara Saraceno Handbook of Quality of Life in the Enlarged European Union (Hardcover)
Jens Alber, Tony Fahey, Chiara Saraceno
R6,609 Discovery Miles 66 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recent enlargement to the east made the European Union a more diverse social space and brought it into more direct contact with the social and cultural aftermath of communism.

Sound empirical knowledge on heterogeneity and homogeneity in European societies after the EU enlargement is lacking. By bringing together a collection of informative analyses of key domains of social life in the new member states and candidate countries, viewed in comparison both to each other and to the 'old' EU-15, this handbook will help social scientists, policy makers and other observers cope with the unfamiliarity of this new world. In particular, it examines the implications of the new member states' membership for the future course of EU integration. This substantial text contains seventeen chapters with a focus on social conditions, such as:

  • poverty and living conditions
  • social inclusion, life satisfaction
  • work and labour markets;
  • family and housing.

Making use of a range of data, this handbook will be an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers of Sociology, Social Policy and Welfare, European Studies and European Union Policy.

Accelerating Japan's Economic Growth - Resolving Japan's Growth Controversy (Hardcover): F. Gerard Adams, Lawrence R.... Accelerating Japan's Economic Growth - Resolving Japan's Growth Controversy (Hardcover)
F. Gerard Adams, Lawrence R. Klein, Kumasaka Yuzo, Shinozaki Akihiko
R4,368 Discovery Miles 43 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Japanese economy is beginning to show signs of recovery after years of stagnation/deflation, but many Japanese policymakers warn that this economic growth may be sluggish: slower than in the United States and certainly slower than in other East Asian countries. Japan faces significant economic problems, including an aging population, a large fiscal deficit, and the need to adjust to the IT economy and to competition with the rest of East Asia. A slow growth scenario would greatly reduce opportunities for new productive investment and would make it increasingly difficult to provide for Japan's growing social needs. The authors of this book argue that Japan can and should grow more rapidly, and examine the reasons for the sluggish performance of the Japanese economy. For example, some Japanese economic sectors, particularly in distribution and finance, have failed to take advantage of new information and communications technology to accelerate the growth of productivity, as has happened in other countries, such as the US. Production function studies and econometric model simulations suggest that with appropriate policies the Japanese economy can grow more rapidly and deal with its future problems. The book posits a number of policy proposals which would help to accelerate Japan's economic growth This book will be of interest to students of the Japanese economy, macroeconomics and international economies, and also to policymakers and professionals interested in Japan's economy.

India's Emerging Financial Market - A Flow of Funds Model (Hardcover): Tomoe Moore India's Emerging Financial Market - A Flow of Funds Model (Hardcover)
Tomoe Moore
R4,515 Discovery Miles 45 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the early 1990s, financial liberalization started in India, and it was thought that such reforms would increase economic growth. This argument formed part of the finance led industrialization hypothesis and although higher growth resulted, higher industrialization did not immediately.

This book is the first study to comprehensively apply the flow of funds model for India.
Using detailed data of the Indian economy, the whole financial sector is presented with associated policy simulation for India. The demand function is theoretically grounded in the Almost Ideal Demand System and cointegration techniques are adapted into the econometric methodology. The policy simulation experiments are conducted with a view to analyzing the delivery of loanable funds to sectors which are the most in need of poverty-reducing economic growth. The system-wide simulation as a result of interactions with disaggregated economic sectors will allow the analysis of a wide spectrum of policy effects on issues such as the determinant of interest rates, financial capital formulation, and the role of financial institutions, government debt and allocation of credit.

India's Emerging Financial Market provides a thorough and rigorous analysis of policy responses in India and will be of interest to academics working on development economics in general and South Asia in particular.

Parliamentary Control and Government Accountability in South Asia - A Comparative Analysis of Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka... Parliamentary Control and Government Accountability in South Asia - A Comparative Analysis of Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka (Hardcover)
Taiabur Rahman
R4,377 Discovery Miles 43 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Parliaments or legislatures are the keystone of democratic governance and they are critical in securing government accountability. This book presents a comparative analysis of the role of parliamentary committees in securing government accountability in the three largest and most important functioning democracies in South Asia: Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. The author compares the nascent democracy of Bangladesh with the stable and vibrant democratic system of India since its independence from the British in 1947 and Sri Lanka's longstanding and established democracy. He argues that in each country, parliament has been able to survive and perform the key parliamentary tasks of representation, legislation, oversight of the executive, conflict resolution and regime maintenance; concluding that parliamentary committees in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka do not perform as successfully as their counterparts in the Western world in controlling the government and holding it to account; however, their role in securing government accountability is not irrelevant. Parliamentary Control and Government Accountability in South Asia will be a useful reference for studying third world parliaments in particular.

Living Cities in Japan - Citizens' Movements, Machizukuri and Local Environments (Hardcover): Andre Sorensen, Carolin Funck Living Cities in Japan - Citizens' Movements, Machizukuri and Local Environments (Hardcover)
Andre Sorensen, Carolin Funck
R4,529 Discovery Miles 45 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last fifteen years local citizens' movements have spread rapidly throughout Japan. Created with the aim of improving the quality of the local environment, and of environmental management processes, such activities are widely referred to as machizukuri, and represent an important development in local politics and urban management in Japan.

This volume examines the growth and nature of such civil society participation in local urban and environmental governance, raising important questions about the changing roles of and relations between central and local government, and between citizens and the state, in managing shared spaces. The machizukuri processes studied here can be seen as the focus of an important emerging trend toward increased civic participation in managing processes of urban change in Japan. The contributors provide a comprehensive overview of the machizukuri phenomenon through examination not only of theory and history, butalso of case studies illustrating real changes in the institutions of place making and neighbourhood governance.

Living Cities in Japan will be of particular value to readers interested in social, urban, geographical and environmental studies.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Axiomatic, enriched and rna tivic homotopy theory" took place at the Isaac Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, England during 9-20 September 2002. The Directors were J.P.C.Greenlees and I.Zhukov; the other or ganizers were P.G.Goerss, F.Morel, J.F.Jardine and V.P.Snaith. The title describes the content well, and both the event and the contents of the present volume reflect recent remarkable successes in model categor ies, structured ring spectra and homotopy theory of algebraic geometry. The ASI took the form of a series of 15 minicourses and a few extra lectures, and was designed to provide background, and to bring the par ticipants up to date with developments. The present volume is based on a number of the lectures given during the workshop. The ASI was the opening workshop of the four month programme "New Contexts for Stable Homotopy Theory" which explored several themes in greater depth. I am grateful to the Isaac Newton Institute for providing such an ideal venue, the NATO Science Committee for their funding, and to all the speakers at the conference, whether or not they were able to contribute to the present volume. All contributions were refereed, and I thank the authors and referees for their efforts to fit in with the tight schedule. Finally, I would like to thank my coorganizers and all the staff at the Institute for making the ASI run so smoothly. J.P.C.GREENLEES."

The Politics of Knowledge in Central Asia - Science between Marx and the Market (Hardcover): Sarah Amsler The Politics of Knowledge in Central Asia - Science between Marx and the Market (Hardcover)
Sarah Amsler
R4,368 Discovery Miles 43 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through careful historical and ethnographic research and extensive use of local scholarly works, this book provides a persuasive and careful analysis of the production of knowledge in Central Asia. The author demonstrates that classical theories of science and society are inadequate for understanding the science project in Central Asia. Instead, a critical understanding of local science is more appropriate.

In the region, the professional and political ethos of Marxism-Leninism was incorporated into the logic of science on the periphery of the Soviet empire. This book reveals that science, organizes and constructed by Soviet rule, was also defined by individual efforts of local scientists. Their work to establish themselves 'between Marx and the market' is therefore creating new political economies of knowledge at the edge of the scientific world system.

Thought-Evoking Approaches in Engineering Problems (Hardcover, 2014): Yoshimo Ito Thought-Evoking Approaches in Engineering Problems (Hardcover, 2014)

R3,827 R3,532 Discovery Miles 35 320 Save R295 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In creating the value-added product in not distant future, it is necessary and inevitable to establish a holistic and though-evoking approach to the engineering problem, which should be at least associated with the inter-disciplinary knowledge and thought processes across the whole engineering spheres. It is furthermore desirable to integrate it with trans-disciplinary aspects ranging from manufacturing culture, through liberal-arts engineering and industrial sociology.

The thought-evoking approach can be exemplified and typified by representative engineering problems: unveiling essential features in Tangential Force Ratio and Interface Pressure, prototype development for Bio-mimetic Needle and application of Water-jet Machining to Artificial Hip Joint, product innovation in Heat Sink for Computer, application of Graph Theory to similarity evaluation of production systems, leverage among reciprocity attributes in Industrial and Engineering Designs for Machine Enclosure and academic interpretation of skills of mature technician in Scraping .

The book is intended to cultivate the multi-talented engineer of the next generation by providing them with the future perspective and ideas for challenging research and development subjects."

The Hemshin - History, Society and Identity in the Highlands of Northeast Turkey (Hardcover): Hovann Simonian The Hemshin - History, Society and Identity in the Highlands of Northeast Turkey (Hardcover)
Hovann Simonian
R4,556 Discovery Miles 45 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Hemshin are without doubt one of the most enigmatic peoples of Turkey and the Caucasus. As former Christians who converted to Islam centuries ago yet did not assimilate into the culture of the surrounding Muslim populations, as Turks who speak Armenian yet are often not aware of it, as Muslims who continue to celebrate feasts that are part of the calendar of the Armenian Church, and as descendants of Armenians who, for the most part, have chosen to deny their Armenian origins in favour of recently invented myths of Turkic ancestry, the Hemshin and the seemingly irreconcilable differences within their group identity have generated curiosity and often controversy. The Hemshin is the first scholarly work to provide an in-depth study of these people living in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. This groundbreaking volume brings together chapters written by an international group of scholars that cover the history, language, economy, culture and identity of the Hemshin. It is further enriched with an unprecedented collection of maps, pictures and appendices of up-to-date statistics. The Hemshin forms part of the Peoples of the Caucasus series, an indispensable and yet accessible resource for all those with an interest in the Caucasus.

This handbook provides a ready introduction and practical guide to the Hemshin people and language.
"The Hemshin," investigates this community of Islamicized Armenians living in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey and in the former Soviet Union. The Hemshin, who live around Rize and Artvin in northeastern Turkey, are the descendants of Armenians who converted to Islam beginning in the seventeenth century, in a process that took severalcenturies to complete. While maintaining Armenian elements in their culture and continuing to speak an Armenian dialect, the Hemshin have tended to dissociate themselves from their Armenian ancestry, with many actively seeking assimilation into the larger Islamic community.
This scholarly work includes chapters written by experts in the field, covering all aspects of the people, including their history, religion, economy and culture, as well as maps, pictures and appendices of up-to-date statistics. This volume forms part of the Peoples of the Caucasus series which is an indispensable - and accessible - resource for all those with an interest in the Caucasus: journalists, aid workers, regional specialists in government, law, banking, accounting, as well as tourists, business people, students and academics.

Civilian or Military Power? - European Foreign Policy in Perspective (Hardcover): Helene Sjursen Civilian or Military Power? - European Foreign Policy in Perspective (Hardcover)

R3,136 R1,156 Discovery Miles 11 560 Save R1,980 (63%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text critically examines the belief that the EU not only has an impact on the international system but also a 'normative', 'civilian' and 'civilizing' power. The contributors question whether this assertion fits with the empirical record or is merely based on anecdotal evidence and whether there is a theoretical basis for the expectation of a 'normative' or 'civilizing' power. Moving the research agenda forward, the book establishes criteria and assessment standards for examining the EU's international role and its putative normative dimension. Such an endeavour is particularly important against the backdrop of recent developments in European security and defence. The acquisition of military means, or the EU's ambition to acquire such means, might weaken at least the argument that the EU is a 'civilian' power and could provoke a shift towards a policy more akin to traditional 'great powers.' This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

This book covers not only the political situation in Zimbabwe, but its international context and those areas of privation, exclusion and silence within the country that are beneath the everyday face of politics. Written by either a Zimbabwean or an internationally acknowledged expert on aspects of Zimbabwe, all the authors agree that the silences in and surrounding the African state cannot continue. This volume utilizes the perspectives of diplomacy, health, law and literature written in both English and Shona, and of those deeply concerned with democratization in Zimbabwe and its surrounding region. Zimbabwe and the Space of Silence will be of interest to students and scholars of African studies, African and Third World politics and international law. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Round Table.
