We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of
limitation. Unfortunately, most of us are much more comfortable
defining what we perceive as off limits rather than what's really
possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our
potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to
define us? What if our limits are not really our limits?

In The third volume of The Digital Hand, James W. Cortada completes
his sweeping survey of the effect of computers on American
industry, turning finally to the public sector, and examining how
computers have fundamentally changed the nature of work in
government and education. This book goes far beyond generalizations
about the Information Age to the specifics of how industries have
functioned, now function, and will function in the years to come.
Cortada combines detailed analysis with narrative history to
provide a broad overview of computings and telecommunications role
in the entire public sector, including federal, state, and local
governments, and in K-12 and higher education. Beginning in 1950,
when commercial applications of digital technology began to appear,
Cortada examines the unique ways different public sector industries
adopted new technologies, showcasing the manner in which their
innovative applications influenced other industries, as well as the
U.S. economy as a whole.

Throughout the 1980s Mrs Thatcher dominated political life in the UK and Thatcherism became the shorthand for a series of political initiatives all over the world. Most accounts of these years have concentrated on the economics of free markets and privatization. This book takes a different stance through a detailed analysis of the responses of NALGO (The National and Local Government Officers Association) members, activists, leaders, and officials to the government's public sector reform and restructuring programme. Employees in health, local government, and education faced cuts in funding, compulsory competitive tendering, internal markets, and new management practices associated with HRM and TQM. Others in the gas, water, electricity, and transport industries faced wholesale privatization. This unique account of the period written from the evidence and perspective of those involved will be an important source for researchers, teachers, and practitioners in politics, industrial relations, public administration, and management concerned with the events and lessons of the 1980s.
We are losing ourselves. We're chasing the wrong things, asking the
wrong questions, and polluting our minds. It's time to stop, it's time
to resist and it's time to rethink the fundamental social blueprint
that our lives are built upon.

David Duff was Chairman of Hibernian at one of the most extraordinary times in the clubs history. In 1990 Wallace Mercer, then Chairman of Hearts pushed for a merger of the two clubs. For long agonising weeks the fate of one of Scotlands great footballing institutions hung in the balance. With internal shareholders wanting to sell out, with institutions pushing for it, the end seemed inevitable but David Duff had other ideas. With huge fan support he led the charge against a takeover which would have meant the end of the club he loved. For the first time he tells the true story of the plot to destroy Hibernian, of those behind it and of their real motivations. It is a riveting story of double dealing, greed and betrayal featuring a cast of some of the best known names in Scottish business and football, often in surprising roles. But the book is about much more than this. It is about the club and its players at the time featuring never before told stories and anecdotes about legends such as John Collins and Andy Goram. It is about European nights behind the Iron curtain, about knife edge football matches and about a man who dreamt of taking Hibs to the summit of Scottish football, but most of all it is about the terrible danger when money and greed meet sport.

Business is one of the major power centres in modern society. The
state seeks to check and channel that power so as to serve broader
public policy objectives. However, if the way in which business is
governed is ineffective or over burdensome, it may become more
difficult to achieve desired goals such as economic growth or
higher levels of employment. In a period of international economic
crisis, the study of how business and government relate to each
other in different countries is of more central importance than
ever.
Much is stated and written about the new world of work but how much do we know about the contemporary workplace? What influence have Japanese management techniques (Just-in-Time Production and Total Quality Management, for example) had on the way work is organized in `transplants', and more broadly in other firms and sectors? Have the systems and mechanisms of control changed radically in recent years, or are they much the same as they have always been? Rick Delbridge sought an answer to these questions at first hand by working on the shopfloor in a Japanese consumer electronics transplant and a European automotive components supplier in order to witness and experience life on the line in contemporary manufacturing. His book is in a long tradition of ethnographic research in industrial sociology and management/labour studies. Not only does he offer rich empirical data on the lived reality of work and a management practice that may share little in common with that found in the textbooks; he also raises a number of important issues about the best ways to understand the complex and changing nature of work. The book will be essential reading for those wishing to understand the reality of the contemporary workplace, the diffusion of Japanese management practices, and the various influences brought to bear on the organization of work. |
