One late spring morning the American artist Jackson Pollock began
work on the canvas that would ultimately come to be known as Number
1, 1950 ("Lavender Mist").
Award-winning authors Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan use this
moment as the departure point for a unique picture book about a
great painter and the way in which he worked. Their lyrical text,
drawn from Pollock's own comments and those made by members of his
immediate circle, is perfectly complemented by vibrant watercolors
by Robert Andrew Parker that honor his spirit of the artist without
imitating his paintings.
A photographic reproduction of the finished painting, a short
biography, a bibliography, and a detailed list of notes and sources
that are fascinating reading in their own right make this an
authoritative as well as beautiful book for readers of all
ages.
This book explores learning in the arts and highlights ways in which art and creativity can ignite learning in schools, informal learning spaces, and higher education. The focus is on learning in, with, and through the arts.
Written from a range of international perspectives, Multidisciplinary Approaches to Art Learning and Creativity draws upon the fields of cognitive science, art education, technology and digital arts; the learning sciences; and museum studies to explore the theoretical underpinnings of artistic creativity and inspiration, and provide empirical explorations of mechanisms that support learning in the arts. Critical factors that help to facilitate the creative process are considered, and chapters highlight connections between research and practice in art learning. This volume offers a rich variety of positions and projects which underpin creativity in schools, museums, and other venues.
An illustrative text for researchers and educators in the arts, Multidisciplinary Approaches to Art Learning and Creativity demonstrates how artistic ways of thinking and working with artists empower art learners and support their needs and opportunities across the lifespan.

Bricks and tiles are two of the most universal and ancient building
materials and they are able to combine tremendous versatility with
the economies and advantages of mass production of standard units.
They are employed in repetitive arrangements both to give strength
to the structure and to cover surfaces, leading to many different
kinds of bonds and styles of surface patterning. Whether you raise
your eyes upwards or drop them to look at floors or pavements,
there are patterns to be seen and this book draws attention to
them. Full of clear colour photographs, and drawings to analyse
them, this book will provide designers and artists with a wealth of
ideas.
Charlotte Salomon was a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin. She is
remembered for her autobiographical series of paintings, Life? or
Theater?, which consists of 769 individual works painted between
1941 and 1943 while she was in hiding from the Nazis in the south
of France, and which has been called a painted parallel to Anne
Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl and an early graphic novel. In
1943, she entrusted her collection of paintings to a friend. In
October of that year, she was captured and deported to Auschwitz,
where she and her unborn child were gassed to death upon arrival.
It's My Whole Life covers Charlotte's remarkable life from her
childhood and art school days to her time as a refugee in
Nazi-occupied France, where she created the largest single work of
art created by a Jew during the Holocaust. Compellingly written and
accompanied by vivid colour photographs of Salomon's artwork, Susan
Wider has crafted an illuminating portrait of an enigmatic and
evanescent young artist.
