Merging the teaching of art innovation through design with traditional art media taught in K-12 art programs, this book introduces art theories and histories in design, offers classroom-tested pedagogical approaches that emphasize innovation, and includes a wealth of graphics and stories about bringing in curiosity, play, and creativity into the classroom. Interspersed with engaging personal narratives and anecdotes, George Szekely paints a picture of transformed art classrooms, and shows how art teachers can effectively foster student risk-taking and learning with new teaching pedagogies and methodologies. By breaking down how teacher encouragement and stimulating classroom environments can empower students and motivate them to challenge themselves, Szekely demonstrates how art rooms become sites where children act as critical makers and builders and are positioned to make major social contributions to the school and beyond.
For those who loved Little People, BIG DREAMS, this new series showcases the lives and achievements of amazing men and women. From the Renaissance to the present day, this inspiring book paints a vivid picture of the lives and works of eleven artists who stood out from the crowd and changed how we see the world. Beginning with Giotto in Renaissance Florence and ending with Banksy's international street art, including Picasso in the Spanish Civil War and Frida Kahlo in 1920s Mexico, Art is a beautiful and entertaining book for budding artists everywhere.
A short, entertaining text narrated by the young Tony introduces Miro, a quiet, kind and smartly dressed man, who 'dreamed when he was awake' and painted wonderfully strange worlds filled with magical animals. The book is beautifully illustrated with some of Miro's finest works, as well as evocative archive photography by Lee Miller and specially commissioned artworks by children done in the style of Miro. Tony recalls a visit by Miro to his childhood home and a trip to London Zoo, during which Miro asked to see 'large birds, snakes, and strange creatures of the night'. With its vibrant colours and artworks, this book will inspire and appeal to art fans of any age.
Parrots, trees, deer, family members, friends, flowers, the sun and the moon-Frida Kahlo's use of symbolism and colour wonderfully lends itself to teaching children about the artistic process. Through illustrations of her work and photographs of Kahlo and her family, children are encouraged to learn about her life, artworks and important relationships. An engaging text and gorgeous reproductions call attention to Kahlo's use of bold colour and natural imagery, as well as her ingenious use of perspective, collage and varying styles. Children will learn much about creative self-expression through this beautifully designed and insightful book about Kahlo's life and work.
This is the story of Marcel Duchamp and how the Dada art movement changed the way people thought about what art could be, and what could be art. From drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa to attaching a bicycle wheel to a stool, Duchamp's work challenged long-held notions of art and how it should be made. People were amused, confused, and sometimes offended, and that was just the way Marcel Duchamp liked it.
Charlotte Salomon was a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin. She is remembered for her autobiographical series of paintings, Life? or Theater?, which consists of 769 individual works painted between 1941 and 1943 while she was in hiding from the Nazis in the south of France, and which has been called a painted parallel to Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl and an early graphic novel. In 1943, she entrusted her collection of paintings to a friend. In October of that year, she was captured and deported to Auschwitz, where she and her unborn child were gassed to death upon arrival. It's My Whole Life covers Charlotte's remarkable life from her childhood and art school days to her time as a refugee in Nazi-occupied France, where she created the largest single work of art created by a Jew during the Holocaust. Compellingly written and accompanied by vivid colour photographs of Salomon's artwork, Susan Wider has crafted an illuminating portrait of an enigmatic and evanescent young artist.

How Artists See is a series of interactive, inquiry-based books designed to teach children the art of observation and increase their visual literacy. Each volume presents 18 diverse works of art, all devoted to a subject that children know from personal experience. Author Colleen Carroll's friendly, conversational text is filled with thought-provoking questions that promote exploration, self-expression, and fun. In this revised and redesigned edition of the classic How Artists See Animals, more than half the artworks are newly selected - and they range from contemporary street art to an ancient Greek coin. Children will discover how Andy Warhol's rhinoceros resembles a prehistoric cave painting, how Frank Gehry turned a fish's sleek aquatic shape into architecture, and how Georgia O'Keefe captured a bird in flight using just a few curving lines.
The series that began with Kid Presidents and Kid Athletes has a new volume that chronicles the childhoods of 16 celebrated artists-everyone from Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh to Mary Cassat, Frida Kahlo, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and even Dr. Seuss! Readers will learn: Georgia O'Keeffe was so enthralled by nature that she once ate dirt just to see what it tasted like.* Jackson Pollock lost the top of his right index finger in a childhood accident (and the severed tip was eaten by a rooster!).* Andy Warhol's favourite childhood lunch was-what else?-a bowl of Campbell's tomato soup. Every scribble, sketch, and sticky situation comes to life in these kid-friendly and relatable stories, all with Doogie Horner's trademark whimsical illustrations. Kid Artists is a delight for budding artists and eager readers alike.

My Sweet Home captures Okhla, a suburban colony in South Delhi, from the perspective of 20 children who live there. The children have written and created art about their homes, terraces, mosques, and the villages that their families come from, in a workshop conducted by the authors. The volume brings to light the many stories from this teeming, thriving corner of Delhi, often bypassed in common discourses on the city. My Sweet Home also tries to resolve the many misunderstandings that people have of the place as a Muslim ghetto, through the experiences of some of its younger residents. These stories and drawings not only reflect the relationships that the children have with their neighbourhood, but also prompt an intangible connection between the readeracross region, religion, nationality and this misunderstood, misrepresented neighbourhood
