The first major publication to explore the prolific career of Kaffe
Fassett, one of the most recognized names in contemporary craft and
design Kaffe Fassett (b. 1937) is one of the most recognized names
in contemporary craft and design with work encompassing knitting,
needlepoint, quilting, textile design, mosaic, painting, and
drawing. Fassett's sense of color and pattern has inspired makers
around the world; his early successes include knitwear designs for
fashion designers such as Bill Gibb and Missoni, and in more recent
years he has collaborated with the luxury fashion house Coach. His
inimitable eye can translate the most everyday of details into the
basis for one of his colorful, sophisticated, maximalist designs.
This book explores Fassett's career and work in context for the
first time, highlighting and widening the scope of his output over
more than five decades. Drawing on original artworks, photographs,
and archival material, it illuminates the work of this distinctive,
influential artist and designer. Essays from design and fashion
historians sit alongside striking visual material and insightful
interviews with Fassett that provide additional context about this
prolific artist. Published in association with the Fashion and
Textile Museum Exhibition Schedule: Fashion and Textile Museum,
London (September 23, 2022-March 12, 2023) Dovecot Studios,
Edinburgh (March 31-July 8, 2023) Millesgarden Museum, Sweden

A comprehensive look at an important member of the artistic
vanguard of late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe In this
beautifully illustrated book, Michel Draguet, an internationally
recognized authority on fin-de-siecle art, offers an enlightening
examination of the life and art of Belgian Symbolist painter
Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921). Khnopff achieved widespread acclaim
during his lifetime for his moody, dreamlike paintings, as well as
his numerous commissioned portraits, designs for costumes and sets
for the theater and opera, photography, sculpture, book
illustrations, and writings. Khnopff was a reclusive personality,
and in 1900 he focused his attention on the design and construction
of a lavish, secluded home and studio in Brussels, a structure that
became deeply entwined with the artist's work and sense of self.
Although the house was demolished in 1936, Draguet uses new
archival research to reconstruct its spaces and explore the home as
emblematic of the artist, guiding the reader through Khnopff's very
personal world and analyzing his art in the context of its
generative surroundings. Distributed for Mercatorfonds

Open-ended Creativity Rewarding Reading Skills to Build On
Everything You Need
Disrupting Craft presents the work of Tanya Aguiniga, Sharif Bey,
Dustin Farnsworth, and Stephanie Styjuco, four artists who take
innovative approaches to their selected mediums. They share a
fascination with themes of identity, and the practise of their art
as a means of engaging socially with communities in collective
activity. The featured artists work in a remarkable variety of
media including earthenware pottery, textiles and weaving,
sculptural materials and woven plastic fabrics, and wood, metal and
mixed media. Their visual sensibilities range from traditional
African beaded culture, to digital media, the products of
modern-day capitalist economies in the developing world, to
post-industrial rust-belt of the American Midwest. Each is actively
engaged in an artistic dialogue within their local and wider
community, presenting mementos of bygone cultural eras and making
sense of it for the present moment. Disrupting Craft is the second
publication, and exhibition, devoted to the work of contemporary
American craft practitioners and artists since the Renwick Gallery
re-opened in fall 2015, following a major restoration and
renovation.
Blacksmithing is one of the traditional "lost arts" deserving
re-discovery by anyone interested in do-it-yourself building and
crafting. Creating one's own apparatus from metal enhances
wood-working, stonework, building, and restoration work.
Traditional builder and historic preservation consultant Charles
McRaven shows how practical, simple, and rewarding the forging of
hand tools can be. Having discovered blacksmithing himself when he
moved "back to the land" in the 1970s, Charles McRaven tells
readers all they need to know to set up their own smithies and
begin blacksmithing. Over the years, McRaven claims he has made
almost every mistake that can be made while perfecting his skills,
and he shares this hard-won knowledge with readers in a readable
and humorous style. The simple and clear instructions supplemented
by the step-by- step photography, show how to build a forge, how to
make and/or acquire tools, and how to use those tools to create
utilitarian items of lasting beauty and durability.
Woodturning is as popular as ever -- a constantly growing segement
in the woodworking world and one of the most wide-reaching
woodcrafts among artists and hands-on crafters. It s appeal is
based on the short learning curve, the minimal equipment, and the
sheer joy of learning to make something out of wood with one s own
hands. But, unlike a lot of crafts that rely on individuality and
creative thinking, the initial techniques of woodturning must be
mastered. While at first liberating, these same techniques can
eventually be confining because in mastering them, one must follow
the lead of others. At a certain point, woodturners can feel that
mastering the techniques has become the end in itself as they lose
sight of their true pursuit: to create one s own original style. In
fact, some woodturners, who believe they aren t creative enough,
will simply continue to master techniques while imitiating the
style of others. Terry Martin, the author of The Creative
Woodturner and a woodturning artist, instructor, and photographer
for over thirty-years, believes this goes against the fundamental
nature of creating and being an artist. There is no right or wrong
and the pursuit of originality should be the goal of every
woodturner. Best of all, creativity can be learned and the ability
to think and see in one s own artistic style can be achieved. The
Creative Woodturner is not your usual how-to woodturning book. It
won t tell you what a chuck is, how to sharpen a scraper, or how to
turn a goblet. Instead, this book is a how-to for unlocking
curiosity, how to break the rules, and for following one s own
artistic path with confidence. Designed to give readers a
wide-persepective on creativity, The Creative Woodturner begins
first with insightful commentary, quotes, and examples from the
woodturning and art community that will both inspire and inform. In
addition, the author shares his Idea Tools: questions to ask during
the planning and creative process that are as important to the
creation of the woodturning project as any equipment in the shop.
Finally, 16 one-of-a-kind projects from boxes and vessles to bowls
and one-of-a-kind scultpures are featured that will spark the
creative mindset of any woodturner. Each project is documented with
instructions and crisp photography highlighting the key steps,
techniques, and tasks necessary for completion. In taking the
reader through each project, the author pulls back the curtain on
his woodturning magic and shares his vision and how the Idea Tools
and creative thinking emerges in each project. An inspiring and
enjoyable read not only for woodturners, but for any artist, The
Creative Woodturner will anyone to think and see differently so
time is spent at the lathe or whatever creative pursuit it is --
creating the original ideas instead of imitating someone else."
From their forms to their movements, Cartier watches are unique.
They are an enduring combination of the unexpected and the
classical. This book chronicles Cartier's constant quest for
excellence in the manufacture of complicated watches. From a Tortue
single push-piece chronograph, created in 1929, to a contemporary
Santos 100 skeleton watch, Cartier interprets complications in its
own inimitable way, always with a sense of design. Laziz Hamani's
photographs capture these objects of exceptional technicity while
author and expert Jack Forster shares the spirit that motivates
each craftsman, engineer and artist to create the most stunning
complicated watches.
'It is more motivating to make something that you genuinely desire,
to create an object that you want in your home. The things we
choose to have around us say something about who we are, but things
we have made ourselves do that even more strongly. I want every
project in the book to be something that the reader wants to make,
to work really well in use and be something that can be proudly
shown to others.' Tom Trimmins This wonderfully practical book is
aimed at anyone looking to balance their busy lives by mastering
core woodworking skills. Working with wood will challenge,
stimulate, relax and reward - and you'll be proud to display the
beautiful objects you've made with your own hands. Here you'll find
a range of practical and pleasing projects to display around your
home. Initially you'll need a small collection of readily available
tools - as your skills develop and expand, so too will your tool
collection. Every project has step-by-step instructions, and you'll
learn about the properties of different woods, design techniques
and how to fix-up vintage tools. The book mainly uses hand tools as
they're cleaner, take up less room, are quieter and offer less
potential for accidents than power tools.

Many traditional crafts practiced in contemporary Egypt can be
traced back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Scenes inscribed
on the walls of ancient temples and tombs depict the earliest
Egyptians making pottery and papyrus and working with stone, wood,
and other materials. The eleven chapters of this volume explore
these and other crafts that continue to flourish in Egypt. From
copper and glass works to jewelry, woodwork, and hand-woven carpets
and fabric, each chapter offers an in-depth look at one material or
craft and the artisans who keep its traditions alive. The authors,
drawing on historical sources and documentary research, sketch the
evolution of each craft, looking into its origins, the development
of tools and methods used in the craft, and the diverse influences
that have shaped the form and function of craft items produced
today, ranging widely through the pharaonic, Coptic, Islamic, and
modern periods. This historical examination is complemented by
extensive field research and interviews with craftsmen and women,
which serve to set these crafts into a living cultural context and
offer a window into the modern craft economy, the lives of
craftspeople, and the local communities and traditions they express
and sustain. The volume is amply illustrated with vivid photographs
of contemporary craft items and artisans at work, from the coastal
town of Damietta to the far-flung deserts and the ancient alleyways
of Cairo. It is a narrative and visual tour that provides valuable
insight into contemporary Egypt as seen through its material
culture and the legions of unsung artists who nourish and enrich
it.
