What challenges do pedestrians and cyclists face in cities of the developing world? What opportunities do these cities have to provide for walking and cycling? Based on in-depth research conducted in Cape Town (South Africa), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya), this book explores these questions by presenting work on walking and cycling travel behaviour, the status of road safety in these cities, as well as an analysis of the infrastructure for walking and cycling, and the workings of the institutions responsible for planning for these modes. The book also presents case studies relating to particular opportunities and challenges, such as the development and evaluation of 'walking bus' interventions, and the opportunities micro-simulation of pedestrian interventions offers within a data-scarce environment. Non-motorized Transport Integration into Urban Transport Planning in Africa demonstrates that transport and urban planning remains situated in a logic of automobile-dependent transport planning and global city development. This logic of practice does not pay adequate attention to walking and cycling. It argues that a significant shift in both policy as well as political commitment is needed so as to prioritize walking and cycling as strategies for sustainable transport policy in urban Africa. Practically everybody in the community uses the transport system, and an eighth of personal consumption expenditure in Britain is spent on transport. This book, first published in 1980 and revised in 1984, presents a synthesis of theoretical and empirical material to explain the elements of transport economics. These include demand, supply, pricing and investment, and the importance of institutional arrangements is emphasised in chapters on transport planning, and on international transport, in which shipping and airline economics are analysed.
The book takes the inventory control perspective to tackle empty container repositioning logistics problems in regional transportation systems by explicitly considering the features such as demand imbalance over space, dynamic operations over time, uncertainty in demand and transport, and container leasing phenomenon. The book has the following unique features. First, it provides a discussion of broad empty equipment logistics including empty freight vehicle redistribution, empty passenger vehicle redistribution, empty bike repositioning, empty container chassis repositioning, and empty container repositioning (ECR) problems. The similarity and unique characteristics of ECR compared to other empty equipment repositioning problems are explained. Second, we adopt the stochastic dynamic programming approach to tackle the ECR problems, which offers an algorithmic strategy to characterize the optimal policy and captures the sequential decision-making phenomenon in anticipation of uncertainties over time and space. Third, we are able to establish closed-form solutions and structural properties of the optimal ECR policies in relatively simple transportation systems. Such properties can then be utilized to construct threshold-type ECR policies for more complicated transportation systems. In fact, the threshold-type ECR policies resemble the well-known (s, S) and (s, Q) policies in inventory control theory. These policies have the advantages of being decentralized, easy to understand, easy to operate, quick response to random events, and minimal on-line computation and communication. Fourth, several sophisticated optimization techniques such as approximate dynamic programming, simulation-based meta-heuristics, stochastic approximation, perturbation analysis, and ordinal optimization methods are introduced to solve the complex stochastic optimization problems. The book will be of interest to researchers and professionals in logistics, transport, supply chain, and operations research.
Public transport is essential to the quality of life of its passengers, both as a means to move around but also to achieve a sustainable environment. However, the passenger's position as a customer is weakened by the dominance of monopolies, regulation and political influence in our public transport systems. With looming fiscal difficulties but growing demand on the transportation system, there may be significant debate about the overall funding level, the structure of the current transit program, its priorities, and the resulting distribution of federal support geographically and by transit mode. Possible alternatives for restructuring federal public transit programs include focusing more resources on major capital expenses for rehabilitation and expansion of transit services; supporting and rehabilitating existing services rather than major capital expansion and the elimination of capital improvement programs altogether to be replaced by a simple "block grant" that could be distributed based on transit ridership or population. This book seeks to enhance understanding of the impacts of project setup and its implementation environment on project performance by leveraging information from the study of a rich set of European transport infrastructure project cases. It puts forward a system's view of project delivery and aims to serve as a strategic tool for decision makers and practitioners. The proposed approach is not limited to specific stakeholder views. On the contrary, it allows stakeholders to formulate their own strategies based on an holistic set of potential implementation scenarios. Furthermore, by including cases of projects that have been influenced by the recent financial crisis, the book aims to capitalise on experiences and provide guidelines as to the design and implementation of resilient projects delivered both through traditional as well as Public Private Partnership (PPP) models. Finally, the book proposes a new Transport Infrastructure Resilience Indicator and a corresponding project rating system that can be assessed with an eye to the future, ultimately aiming to support the successful delivery of transport infrastructure projects for all stakeholders involved.

Suburbanizing the Masses examines how collective forms of transport have contributed to the spatial and social evolution of towns and cities in various countries since the mid nineteenth century. Divided into two sections, the volume develops first the classic tradition on transport and the city, public transport's 'impact' on urban development. The contextualisation of transport is one important factor in the historical debates surrounding urban development. As well as analysing the discourse employed by urban political and business elites in favour of public transport, these contributions show the degree to which practice often fell short of ideals. The second section tackles the professional paradigms of urban transport: the circulation of traffic in cities and the technological modes appropriate to its realization. Die Nuklearkatastrophe in Fukushima fuhrte zu einem Wendepunkt in der deutschen Energiepolitik. Mit einem parteiubergreifenden politischen Konsens und mit breiter Zustimmung in der deutschen Bevoelkerung beschloss die Bundesregierung kurze Zeit danach die Beschleunigung des Atomausstiegs und damit die Umgestaltung der deutschen Energieversorgung gestutzt auf Erneuerbare Energien. Dieser Umbau wird seither mit dem Begriff der "Energiewende" assoziiert. Doch der Zubau von Erneuerbaren Energien fuhrt auch zu einem wachsenden Ausbaubedarf im UEbertragungsnetz, da der in den Norddeutschen Windparks produzierte Strom durch das UEbertragungsnetz in die sudlichen Lastzentren abtransportiert werden muss. Auch Polen steht gegenwartig vor einem grundlegenden Strukturumbruch in der Elektrizitatsversorgung. Denn Polen setzt kunftig auf eine Energieversorgung aus Kernenergie. Dazu plant Polen den Bau von zwei Kernkraftwerken, deren Errichtung bis 2035 abgeschlossen sein soll. Obwohl Polen damit einen anderen Weg als Deutschland eingeschlagen hat, ist die polnische Ausgangslage im Bereich des UEbertragungsnetzes auch ohne die beiden Kernkraftwerke bereits heute mit der deutschen vergleichbar. Denn auch das polnische UEbertragungsnetz muss dringend ausgebaut werden, da es veraltet ist. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Darstellung ist eine rechtsvergleichende Untersuchung der Frage, welche der nationalen Vorschriften zum UEbertragungsnetzausbau fur eine schnellere Umsetzung einer (potentiellen) Energiewende in beiden Landern den Vorzug verdienen.
Most books about Britain's transport history have concentrated upon canals and railways. It is now clear that a great deal of traffic went by road even before turnpikes, and that goods as well as passenger services were much more highly developed than used to be supposed. This book is an important survey of road transport over the past three centuries. The authors summarise the new evidence and arguments and explain why we need to take a longer view of the subject. They shed new light on the importance of horse-drawn freight in the eighteenth century before the introduction of turnpikes, offset the undue attention paid to the railways in the nineteenth century, and stress that motor transport's present great importance only dates from the 1950s. A full bibliography is provided for more extended study. |
