R3,227 Discovery Miles 32 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

To date, more than three thousand brain and skull base tumors, along with various vascular problems, have been treated by using advanced, fully endoscopic, minimally invasive surgical techniques. In this book, Dr. Hrayr K. Shahinian, director of the Skull Base Institute, compiles these techniques. The book is highly specific and amply illustrated. The step-by-step operating room procedures provide a definitive guide to the difficult yet essential art of skull base surgery.

Pitch - Neural Coding and Perception (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005): Christopher J. Plack, Andrew J.... Pitch - Neural Coding and Perception (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005)
Christopher J. Plack, Andrew J. Oxenham, Richard R Fay
R4,512 Discovery Miles 45 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although pitch has been considered an important area of auditory research since the birth of modern acoustics in the 19th century, some of the most significant developments in our understanding of this phenomenon have occurred comparatively recently. In auditory physiology, researchers are now identifying cells in the brainstem and cortex that may be involved in the derivation of pitch. In auditory psychophysics, dramatic developments over the last few years have changed our understanding of temporal pitch mechanisms, and of the roles of resolved and unresolved harmonics. Computational modeling has provided new insights into the biological algorithms that may underlie pitch perception. Modern brain imaging techniques have suggested possible cortical locations for pitch mechanisms.

This timely volume brings together the more recent findings, while emphasizing their relation to the discoveries of the past. It brings together insights from several different methodological areas: physiology, psychophysics, comparative, imaging, etc., in addressing a single scientific problem. Pitch perception can be regarded as one of the main problems of hearing, and the multidisciplinary approach of the book provides a valuable reference source for graduate students and academics.

Evidence-Based Otolaryngology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009): Jennifer Shin, Christopher Hartnick,... Evidence-Based Otolaryngology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009)
Jennifer Shin, Christopher Hartnick, Gregory Randolph
R3,523 Discovery Miles 35 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recognizing the clinician's need for quick access to a comprehensive and immediately useful presentation of evidence-based material, the authors and editors have condensed the research on the most common otorhinolaryngological complaints into this indispensable volume. Their unique approach color-codes the level of research backing each set of evidence in order to make assessment of the evidence as quick and useful as possible. Each clinical problem is presented with a "color key," letting the physician know the level of evidence available: green (high-level evidence), yellow (low-moderate levels of evidence), or red (major disagreement or only minimal low-level evidence). The content of each chapter is structured in the same manner so the reader quickly becomes accustomed to finding precisely the information needed for each new case.

Featuring sections on general otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, pediatrics, and otology, Evidence-Based Otolaryngology not only presents the research, but gives the clinician immediately applicable recommendations for patient treatment.

Speech Processing in the Auditory System (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004): Steven Greenberg, William... Speech Processing in the Auditory System (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004)
Steven Greenberg, William A. Ainsworth, Richard R Fay
R4,709 Discovery Miles 47 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although speech is the primary behavioral medium by which humans communicate, its auditory basis is poorly understood, having profound implications on efforts to ameliorate the behavioral consequences of hearing impairment and on the development of robust algorithms for computer speech recognition. In this volume, the authors provide an up-to-date synthesis of recent research in the area of speech processing in the auditory system, bringing together a diverse range of scientists to present the subject from an interdisciplinary perspective. Of particular concern is the ability to understand speech in uncertain, potentially adverse acoustic environments, currently the bane of both hearing aid and speech recognition technology. There is increasing evidence that the perceptual stability characteristic of speech understanding is due, at least in part, to elegant transformations of the acoustic signal performed by auditory mechanisms. As a comprehensive review of speech's auditory basis, this book will interest physiologists, anatomists, psychologists, phoneticians, computer scientists, biomedical and electrical engineers, and clinicians.

Cochlear Implants: Auditory Prostheses and Electric Hearing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004): Fan-Gang... Cochlear Implants: Auditory Prostheses and Electric Hearing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004)
Fan-Gang Zeng, Richard R Fay
R6,720 Discovery Miles 67 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cochlear implants have instigated a popular but controversial revolution in the treatment of deafness. This book discusses the physiological bases of using artificial devices to electrically stimulate the brain to interpret sounds. As the first successful device to restore neural function, the cochlear implant serves as a model for research in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. These and other auditory prostheses are discussed in the context of historical treatments, engineering, psychophysics and clinical issues as well as implications for speech, behavior, cognition and long-term effects on people.

Active Processes and Otoacoustic Emissions in Hearing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Geoffrey A.... Active Processes and Otoacoustic Emissions in Hearing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Geoffrey A. Manley, Richard R Fay, Arthur N. Popper
R4,551 Discovery Miles 45 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The cochlea does not just pick up sound, it also produces sounds of low intensity called Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs). Sounds produced by healthy ears - either spontaneously or in response to stimuli - allow researchers and clinicians to study hearing and cochlear function noninvasively in both animals and humans. This book presents the first serious review of the biological basis of these otoacoustic emissions.

R4,540 Discovery Miles 45 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of compreh- sive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modern auditory - search. The volumes are aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes are intended to introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and to help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in ?elds of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume presents a particular topic comprehensively, and each serves as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature.

Auditory Trauma, Protection, and Repair (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Jochen Schacht, Richard R Fay Auditory Trauma, Protection, and Repair (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Jochen Schacht, Richard R Fay
R4,507 Discovery Miles 45 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The past decade has brought great advances in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying auditory pathologies. This volume presents recent developments in research and their potential translation to the clinical setting. It brings together the basic and clinical sciences very nicely in that while most chapters are written by basic scientists, each topic has a pretty direct clinical application or implication.

Loudness (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Mary Florentine, Arthur N. Popper, Richard R Fay Loudness (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Mary Florentine, Arthur N. Popper, Richard R Fay
R5,285 Discovery Miles 52 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Loudness is the primary psychological correlate of intensity. When the intensity of a sound increases, loudness increases. However, there exists no simple one-to-one correspondence between loudness and intensity; loudness can be changed by modifying the frequency or the duration of the sound, or by adding background sounds. Loudness also changes with the listener 's cognitive state. Loudness provides a basic reference for graduate students, consultants, clinicians, and researchers with a focus on recent discoveries. The book begins with an overview of the conceptual thinking related to the study of loudness, addresses issues related to its measurement, and later discusses the physiological effects of loud sounds, reaction times and electrophysiological measures that correlate with loudness. Loudness in the laboratory, loudness of steady-state sounds and the loudness of time-varying sounds are also covered, as are hearing loss and models.

Sensory Neuroscience: Four Laws of Psychophysics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009): Jozef J. Zwislocki Sensory Neuroscience: Four Laws of Psychophysics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2009)
Jozef J. Zwislocki
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sensory Neuroscience: Four Laws of Psychophysics organizes part of psychophysics -- a science of quantitative relationships between human sensations and the stimuli that evoke them. Although psychophysics belongs to sensory neuroscience, and is coupled to neurophysiology, it has also branched out to various specialized disciplines, including the disciplines of vision and hearing, ophthalmology, optometry, otology, and audiology. Due to this diversification and fragmentation, psychophysics has had an ad-hoc, phenomenological orientation. Besides Weber's law of differential sensitivity, and the still-controversial Stevens' power law, it has lacked a systematic grid of scientific laws. Sensory Neuroscience: Four Laws of Psychophysics provides valid unifying principles and systematic applications for this otherwise fragmented precursor of experimental psychology, and defines four multisensory relationships of substantial generality between sensations and the underlying stimulus variables. This book will be particularly useful to auditory researchers, experimental psychologists, and behavioral neuroscientists.

The Frontal Sinus (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005): Stilianos E. Kountakis, Brent Senior, Wolfgang Draf The Frontal Sinus (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005)
Stilianos E. Kountakis, Brent Senior, Wolfgang Draf
R6,561 Discovery Miles 65 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Addressing disease of the frontal sinus successfully remains, perhaps, one of the most technically challenging issues encountered by otolaryngologists. The intricate anatomy, combined with a narrow aperture and relatively acute angle of approach, leads to complexity not encountered elsewhere in surgery of the sinuses. This comprehensive volume with contributions by over 30 of the world's leading rhinologists will help to shed light on this difficult topic. Thorough discussions of anatomy and pathophysiology of a variety of frontal sinus diseases provide a background for in-depth chapters on aspects of both medical and surgical management. A variety of surgical approaches are discussed, including the latest endoscopic techniques, as well as more traditional open and microscopic approaches. Heavily illustrated, this volume will be a "must have" for the rhinologist managing disease in the frontal sinus.

Auditory Signal Processing - Physiology, Psychoacoustics, and Models (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005):... Auditory Signal Processing - Physiology, Psychoacoustics, and Models (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005)
Daniel Pressnitzer, Alain de Cheveigne, Stephen McAdams, Lionel Collet
R5,835 Discovery Miles 58 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains the papers that were presented at the XIIIth International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held in Dourdan, France, between August 24 and 29, 2003. From its first edition in 1969, the Symposium has had a distinguished tradition of bringing together auditory psychologists and physiologists. Hearing science now also includes computational modeling and brain imaging, and this is reflected in the papers collected. The rich interactions between participants during the meeting were yet another indication of the appositeness of the original idea to confront approaches around shared scientific issues. A total of 62 solicited papers are included, organized into 12 broad thematic areas ranging from cochlear signal processing to plasticity and perceptual learning. The themes follow the sessions and the chronological order of the paper presentations during the symposium. A notable feature of the ISH books is the transcription of the discussions between participants. A draft version of the book is circulated before the meeting, and all participants are invited to make written comments, before or during the presentations. This particularity is perhaps what makes the ISH book series so valuable as a truthful picture of the evolution of issues in hearing science. We tried to uphold this tradition, which was all the easier because of the excellent scientific content of the discussions.

The Neurophysiological Bases of Auditory Perception (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Enrique Lopez-Poveda, Alan R. Palmer, Ray Meddis The Neurophysiological Bases of Auditory Perception (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Enrique Lopez-Poveda, Alan R. Palmer, Ray Meddis
R6,186 Discovery Miles 61 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the papers presented at the 15th International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held at the Hotel Regio, Santa Marta de Tormes, Salamanca, Spain, between 1st and 5th June 2009. Since its inception in 1969, this Symposium has been a forum of excellence for debating the neurophysiological basis of auditory perception, with computational models as tools to test and unify physiological and perceptual theories. Every paper in this symposium includes two of the following: auditory physiology, psychoph- ics or modeling. The topics range from cochlear physiology to auditory attention and learning. While the symposium is always hosted by European countries, p- ticipants come from all over the world and are among the leaders in their fields. The result is an outstanding symposium, which has been described by some as a "world summit of auditory research. " The current volume has a bottom-up structure from "simpler" physiological to more "complex" perceptual phenomena and follows the order of presentations at the meeting. Parts I to III are dedicated to information processing in the peripheral au- tory system and its implications for auditory masking, spectral processing, and c- ing. Part IV focuses on the physiological bases of pitch and timbre perception. Part V is dedicated to binaural hearing. Parts VI and VII cover recent advances in und- standing speech processing and perception and auditory scene analysis. Part VIII focuses on the neurophysiological bases of novelty detection, attention, and learning.

Surgery for Sleep Disordered Breathing (Mixed media product, 2nd ed. 2010): Karl Hoermann, Thomas Verse Surgery for Sleep Disordered Breathing (Mixed media product, 2nd ed. 2010)
Karl Hoermann, Thomas Verse
R4,553 Discovery Miles 45 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure ventilation is the gold standard in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Long-term compliance rates are about 60%. Therefore, several alternative treatment options are of special interest. Beside conservative therapies, various surgical concepts exist. The field of surgery for sleep disordered breathing has rapidly grown with new instrumentation and surgical techniques in the last 10 years. Surgeons in these fields have to attend scientific meetings, participate in workshops, and read the literature to stay up to date. In our sleep laboratories we conduct 30 polysomnographies each night. Each year, we perform almost 1,000 surgical procedures for sleep disordered breathing apart from numerous other conservative and apparative treatment modalities. Referring to our expe- ence and the present literature, we tried to give new information on surgical techniques in this second edition. The chapters are grouped in different anatomical fields of interest. We wanted to give general advice and specific new hints for the surgery of sleep disordered breathing so that the reader learns basic techniques followed by more advanced surgery. In addition to the illustrated surgical descriptions, the chapters contain informations about indications and contraindications of each surgical procedure and the postoperative care. Special interest has been dedicated to evidence-based medicine. So in each chapter, there is a table of references summarizing the effectiveness of the procedure and EBM grade.
