The HIV Manual - A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment (Hardcover, New): David H. Spach, Thomas M. Hooton The HIV Manual - A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment (Hardcover, New)
David H. Spach, Thomas M. Hooton
R1,752 Discovery Miles 17 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rapidly proliferating research on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), now well in its second decade, continues to generate new information at a rate heretofore unparalleled in medicine. As a direct result, the increasing variety of methods for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV and AIDS has made it difficult for physicians to keep abreast of the optimal management approaches in the field. The HIV Manual is an immensely practical, accessible, and up-to-date summary of the wide range of clinically relevant information on HIV-infected adults. It deals with the key issues and frequently encountered problems in HIV clinical care, and includes a special section on the symptom-based approach to diagnosis. In addition, this concise reference contains several chapters discussing topics rarely covered in similar books on the subject, such as HIV testing, initial evaluation, future anti-HIV therapies, alternative therapies, and nutrition.
The format is specifically designed for the busy practitioner's convenience. Subheadings clearly outline the principal elements of each chapter and treatment regimens are encapsulated in boxes so that needed material can be located with ease. The diagnostic and treatment guidelines are easy to follow and even where a concensus on treatment is lacking, the authors have made recommendations based on the existing data. This manual is intended to serve the information needs of health professionals involved in the care and treatment of HIV-infected patients in the clinical setting. It will also provide an easy-to-read guide for the general reader interested in finding out more about the diagnosis and prevention of HIV and AIDS.

Oxalate Metabolism in Relation to Urinary Stone (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): G Alan Rose Oxalate Metabolism in Relation to Urinary Stone (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
G Alan Rose
R1,395 Discovery Miles 13 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Oxalate Metabolism in Relation to Urinary Stone" is the third monograph to appear in the "Bloomsbury Series". Edited by Alan Rose, the book describes the current clinical and biochemical features of oxalate metabolism. Its content and direction fulfil the goals of the Series emphasising the strong links between basic science and clinical medicine. London Jack Tinker 30 March 1988 Preface The first oxalate workshop was held in London in 1979 and the proceedings published privately by the Wellcome Foundation. At that time the importance of urinary oxalate as a risk factor more important for calcium oxalate stone formation than urinary calcium had been recognized. Nevertheless measurements of urinary oxalate still left a lot to be desired and in particular the non-enzymatic conversion of ascorbate to oxalate had not been rediscovered so that many measurements must have been wrong. Plasma oxalate was still difficult or impossible to measure by any reasonable, accessible methods and consequently there was still much argument and speculation about the handling of oxalate by the kidneys. A lot of work has been performed in the last eight years on oxalate metabolism and it therefore seemed to the organisers to be a good time to hold a second oxalate workshop.

Oxford Handbook of Epidemiology for Clinicians (Paperback, New): Helen Ward, Mireille B. Toledano, Gavin Shaddick, Bethan... Oxford Handbook of Epidemiology for Clinicians (Paperback, New)
Helen Ward, Mireille B. Toledano, Gavin Shaddick, Bethan Davies, Paul Elliott 1
R842 Discovery Miles 8 420 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

The Oxford Handbook of Epidemiology for Clinicians provides all the information required by students and junior doctors who need to understand and translate key epidemiological concepts into medical practice. Unlike standard textbooks in this area, the focus throughout is on clinical applications of epidemiological knowledge. Divided into four sections, the handbook begins with the basics of epidemiology in the clinic, moving on to the theories behind evidence-based practice, discussions of optimum methods and studies, and then ends by looking at the epidemiology of common diseases. The material is presented in a logical manner, from problems to the most appropriate solutions or tools to be applied. Interesting topics such as controversies in prevention intervention encourage discussion and thought, and the authors pose sensible and important questions throughout. This handbook is a must for all junior doctors, medical students, and clinicians who need to apply epidemiological concepts to day-to-day practice or who want a practical step-by-step guide to undertaking research, conducting reviews of evidence, or writing up publications.

Kevin W. Finkel, Mark Anthony Perazella, Eric P. Cohen
R4,140 Discovery Miles 41 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Kidney disease and cancer are frequent comorbidities that require specialized knowledge and expertise from both the nephrologist and the oncologist. Written by three pioneers in this growing subspecialty, Onco-Nephrology provides authoritative, definitive coverage of the mechanism and management of these two life-threatening diseases. This unique, single-volume resource covers current protocols and recommends management therapies to arrest kidney failure and allow oncologic treatments to continue and succeed. Addresses acute and chronic kidney diseases that develop from a variety of cancers. This includes direct kidney injury from the malignancy, paraneoplastic effects of the cancer, and various cancer agents used to treat the malignancy. Discusses key issues regarding kidney disease in patients with cancer, including conventional chemotherapeutic regimens and new novel therapies (targeted agents and immunotherapies) or the malignancies themselves that may promote kidney injury; patients with chronic kidney disease who acquire cancer unrelated to renal failure; and kidney transplantation, which has been shown to carry an increased risk of cancer. Contains dedicated chapters for each class of the conventional chemotherapeutic agents, targeted cancer agents, and cancer immunotherapies including the basic science, pathogenic mechanisms of injury, clinical manifestations, and treatment. Includes special chapters devoted to the individual classes of chemotherapies that relate to kidney disease for quick reference. Discusses increasingly complex problems due to more numerous and specialized anti-cancer drugs, as well as increased survival rates for both cancer and renal failure requiring long-term patient care. Covers anti-VEGF (antivascular endothelial growth factor) agents and cancer immunotherapies - treatments that are being recognized for adverse kidney effects. R3,296 Discovery Miles 32 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global public health problem, affecting nearly one in seven adults in the United States alone. It is a disease that integrates chronic illness at several levels, and the progressive condition is associated with high rates of co-morbidity. This text provides a comprehensive, current state-of-the art review of this field, serving as a valuable resource for primary care providers and non-nephrology clinicians that treat patients with CKD. It is comprised of 24 chapters focused on specific aspects of the disease. The first 2 chapters provide a bit of background on the disease, describing the anatomy and physiology of the kidney as well as the definition and epidemiology of the disease. The following 3 chapters discuss the detection, prevention and progression of the disease. The next 6 chapters describe the relationship of the disease with other conditions and most common co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension. The chapters, that follow focus on the CKD associated complications and the CKD within special populations such as the elderly and minorities as well as dietary restrictions and drug dosing. The book concludes with discussion on preparation for renal replacement therapy and preemptive organ transplantation as an alternative to dialysis in the management of the advanced CKD. Written by experts in the field, Approach to Chronic Kidney Disease is a comprehensive guide for clinicians, especially primary care providers including residents and fellows in training, who take care of chronic kidney disease patients. It is also a useful tool for researchers dealing with this challenging field.

Human Ochratoxicosis & its Pathologies (Paperback): G. Dirheimer, M. Castegnaro, E. E. Creppy Human Ochratoxicosis & its Pathologies (Paperback)
G. Dirheimer, M. Castegnaro, E. E. Creppy
R1,714 R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Save R420 (25%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Among the various mycotoxins affecting man, OTA -- involved in the renal disease endemic in the Balkans -- is thought by the International Cancer Research Centre (ICRC) to be a potential carcinogen. The question facing the international ochratoxin-A specialists was whether endemic renal disease in the Balkans was still restricted to this geographical region. A careful study of human ochratoxicosis and other possibly associated pathologies in under-developed countries could enable future developments of the problems to be forecast in other parts of the globe and hence allow means of preventive action to be sought.

Difficult Conversations in Medicine (Paperback): Elisabeth MacDonald Difficult Conversations in Medicine (Paperback)
Elisabeth MacDonald
R1,549 Discovery Miles 15 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In all branches of medicine, effective communication between health care professionals and patients, families and carers is essential to ensure first-class treatment. Increasing public awareness of health issues and the ready availability of health information have lead the public to be more widely informed about common conditions and the treatments available. Patients therefore attend a medical consultation better informed so the need for improved communication skills is even greater. This book aims to demystify the 'doctor-patient' relationship in order that patients and potential patients can more easily understand the information which doctors are seeking to convey as well as gaining some insight into the difficulties of communication from a doctor's perspective. Some conversations require specialised skills. Talking to people with difficult personalities and poor social skills can be challenging. Strong emotions of anger, frustration or distress need sensitive handling and particular age groups call on styles of address appropriate to their particular needs. Using the expertise of experienced doctors from many specialties this book covers not only the theory behind good communication skills but also gives a wealth of practical advice. The book covers ethical and legal issues, planning difficult conversations, the patient's and doctor's perspectives, issues surrounding special groups such as children and the elderly, and conversations with patients from different cultural backgrounds. Outlines of possible clinical cases posing specific problems are included with guidance on how to handle them.

The evolution of the classification of neoplasms of the urinary passages has changed greatly since Friedman and Ash published the first series AFIP fascicle on the urinary bladder in 1959. In their classification, there were four variants of urothelial neoplasia, some adenomas, adenocarcinoma, and smooth muscle and lymphoid tumors. Today the classification continues to accrue entities based upon morphology, immunophenotype, and compelling clinical associations. The classification of renal cell carcinomas has undergone a profound transformation, with the emergence of many new entities, often with characteristic genetic alterations, with significant implications for prognosis and treatment. This comprehensive, detailed, and highly illustrated fascicle is a remarkable resource to surgical pathologists and other specialists who treat patients with tumors of these sites.
