R5,150 Discovery Miles 51 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Information literacy-the ability to find, evaluate, and use information resources-is an important skill for future chemists. Students and scientists need to distinguish between information provided by Wikipedia, ChemSpider, research journals, and The New York Times, depending on the intended use of the information sought. Instructors and librarians may often teach these skills through stand-alone database demonstrations, video tutorials, and lectures. However, it is possible to teach these skills in a more contextual and integrated manner by designing chemistry assignments that incorporate information literacy as a learning outcome. This book will prove useful for librarians and chemistry instructors who are designing courses in which students develop information literacy in the context of a chemistry course at two-year colleges, public and private universities, and high schools. The chapters in this book review the current state of information literacy in chemistry and provide concrete examples of assignments and interventions aimed at teaching information literacy skills in chemistry curricula. A wide range of options are offered for integrating information literacy into college-level chemistry courses, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, science courses for students not majoring in science, and chemistry capstone research courses.

Mentoring Strategies To Facilitate the Advancement of Women Faculty (Hardcover): Kerry Karukstis, Bridget Gourley, Miriam... Mentoring Strategies To Facilitate the Advancement of Women Faculty (Hardcover)
Kerry Karukstis, Bridget Gourley, Miriam Rossi, Laura Wright
R5,806 Discovery Miles 58 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Compelling evidence exists to support the hypothesis that both formal and informal mentoring practices that provide access to information and resources are effective in promoting career advancement, especially for women. Such associations provide opportunities to improve the status, effectiveness, and visibility of a faculty member via introductions to new colleagues, knowledge of information about the organizational system, and awareness of innovative projects and new challenges.
This volume developed from the symposium "Successful Mentoring Strategies to Facilitate the Advancement of Women Faculty" held at the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco in March 2010. The organizers of the symposium, also serving as the editors of this volume, aimed to feature an array of successful mechanisms for enhancing the leadership, visibility, and recognition of academic women scientists using various mentoring strategies. It was their goal to have contributors share creative approaches to address the challenge of broadening the participation and advancement of women in science and engineering at all career stages and from a wide range of institutional types. Inspired by the successful outcomes of the editors' own NSF-ADVANCE project that involved the formation of horizontal peer mentoring alliances, this book is a collection of valuable practices and insights to both share how their horizontal mentoring strategy has impacted their professional and personal lives and to learn of other effective mechanisms for advancing women faculty.

Chemistry as a Second Language - Chemical Education in a Globalized Society (Hardcover): Charity Flener Lovitt, Paul Kelter Chemistry as a Second Language - Chemical Education in a Globalized Society (Hardcover)
Charity Flener Lovitt, Paul Kelter
R2,891 Discovery Miles 28 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Collaborations between scientists often transcend borders and cultural differences. The fundamental nature of science allows scientists to communicate using knowledge of their field but the institutions that support them are often hindered by financial and cultural barriers. As a result, science suffers. This book evolved from an August 2009 symposium at the 238th annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, DC. Its focus is on chemistry students and professors interested in developing a global approach to teaching chemistry, by participating in an international exchange program or incorporating culturally inclusive techniques into their classroom. The book has three broad themes; education research with a globalized perspective, experiences of teaching and learning in different countries, and organizations that support a global view of chemical education and chemistry.

Investigating Classroom Myths through Research on Teaching and Learning (Hardcover): Diane Bunce Investigating Classroom Myths through Research on Teaching and Learning (Hardcover)
Diane Bunce
R5,810 Discovery Miles 58 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is meant to be a companion volume for the ACS Symposium Series Book entitled Nuts and Bolts of Chemical Education Research. In the Nuts and Bolts book (edited by Diane M. Bunce and Renee Cole), readers were presented with information on how to conduct quality chemical education research. In the Myth book, exemplars of chemical education research are featured. In the cases where the chapter in the book is describing research that has already been published (typically in the Journal of Chemical Education), additional information is provided either in terms of research questions investigated that were not reported in the published article or background information on decisions made in the research that helped the investigation. The main focus of this type of discussion is to engage the reader in the reality of doing chemical education research including a discussion of the authors' motivation. It is expected that these two books could be used as textbooks for graduate chemical education courses showing how to do chemical education research and then providing examples of quality research.

The Future of the History of Chemical Information (Hardcover): Leah Rae Mcewen, Robert E. Buntrock The Future of the History of Chemical Information (Hardcover)
Leah Rae Mcewen, Robert E. Buntrock
R5,821 Discovery Miles 58 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Inspired by the opportunities and challenges presented by rapid advances in the fields of retrieval of chemical and other scientific information, several speakers presented at a symposium, The History of the Future of Chemical Information, on Aug. 20, 2012, at the 244th Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia, PA. Storage and retrieval is of undeniable value to the conduct of chemical research. The participants believe that past practices in this field have not only contributed to the increasingly rapid evolution of the field but continue to do so, hence the somewhat unusual title. Even with archival access to several of the presentations, a number of the presenters felt that broader access to this information is of value. Thus, the presenters decided to create an ACS Symposium book based on the topic, with the conviction that it would be valuable to chemists of all disciplines. The past is a moving target depending on the vagaries of technology, economics, politics and how researchers and professionals choose to build on it. The aim of The History of the Future of Chemical Information is to critically examine trajectories in chemistry, information and communication as determined by the authors in the light of current and possible future practices of the chemical information profession. Along with some additional areas primarily related to present and future directions, this collection contains most of the topics covered in the meeting symposium. Most of the original authors agreed to write chapters for this book. Much of the historical and even current material is scattered throughout the literature so the authors strived to gather this information into a discrete source. Faced with the rapid evolution of such aspects as mobile access to information, cloud computing, and public resource production, this book will be not only of interest but provide valuable insight to this rapidly evolving field, both to practitioners within the field of chemical information and chemists everywhere whose need for current and accurate information on chemistry and related fields is increasingly important.

Microbial Surfaces - Structure, Interactions and Reactivity (Hardcover): Terri A. Camesano, Charlene Mello Microbial Surfaces - Structure, Interactions and Reactivity (Hardcover)
Terri A. Camesano, Charlene Mello
R1,903 Discovery Miles 19 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The interactions of microbes with surfaces are important to many natural and engineered processes, affecting a wide range of applications from decontamination of surfaces or drinking water, prevention of microbial colonization of biomaterials, and bacterial processes in the environment. Therefore, there is great interest in understanding the fundamental behavior of microbes at surfaces. Topics are included that address interactions of cells with a number of surfaces for antifouling and microbial cell-based sensor applications; mechanistic studies of antimicrobial peptides and quorum sensing; exploration of experimental and theoretical models of a cell surface; cell surface display of peptides and enzymes as biofabrication techniques; the fate and transport of bacteria in the natural environment, as well as new experimental tools or modeling techniques to study interactions at the microbial surface.
While most of the papers are geared towards a specific application, they all contain fundamental information regarding bacterial behavior at interfaces that allows their contents to translate to other problems, as well. For example, many parallels are noted between the way bacteria interact with proteins-coated polymers on a catheter and bacterial-peptide interactions in a cellular detection assay. An overlying theme of all the manuscripts is that they represent studies of microbial interfaces using the most sophisticated experimental and modeling tools available, and many feature interdisciplinary approaches to tackling the given problems.

R7,177 Discovery Miles 71 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book gives an overview of the current state-of-the-art concerning the activation and dissolution of cellulose in a broad variety of solvents. Research on this topic can lead to new pathways for the utilization of the most abundant terrestrial biomolecule and may therefore be the basis for new green strategies towards advanced materials. Leading scientists in the field show different conceptions for the solubilization of cellulose. The long history and groundbreaking developments in the field of polymer chemistry, which are related to this subject, have lead to timely alternatives to already established methods. In addition to discussing attempts for the optimization of known dissolving procedures, this book also details new solvent systems. New solvents include inorganic and organic salt melts (ionic liquids), new aqueous media, multi-component organic solvents and the dissolution under partial derivatization of the polysaccharide. The opportunities and the limitations of the solvents are demonstrated, with a particular emphasis on the stability of the solutions and a possible recycling of the solvent components.
This book illustrates that the new procedures for cellulose dissolution can lead to a huge number of unconventional superstructures of regenerated cellulose material, such as fibers and polymer layers with a thickness in the nanometer range or aerogels, i.e. regenerates with a highly porous character and a large surface. Moreover, cellulose blends can be generated via solutions. The book also contains chapters that show the amazing potential of solvents for defined modification reactions on the cellulose backbone. On one hand, it is possible to synthesize known cellulose derivatives with new substitution patterns both on the basis of the repeating unit and along the polymer chain. On the other hand, completely new derivatives are presented which are hardly accessible via heterogeneous reactions. Consequently, the book is intended to give a comprehensive overview of procedures for dissolution of cellulose. It is of interest for scientists new in the field but is also a timely summary of trends for experts who are looking for new approaches for problems related to cellulose shaping or chemical modification.

Maple - A Primer (Hardcover): Bernard V Liengme Maple - A Primer (Hardcover)
Bernard V Liengme
R2,365 Discovery Miles 23 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Maple is a comprehensive symbolic mathematics application which is well suited for demonstrating physical science topics and solving associated problems. Because Maple is such a rich application, it has a somewhat steep learning curve. Most existing texts concentrate on mathematics; the Maple help facility is too detailed and lacks physical science examples, many Maple-related websites are out of date giving readers information on older Maple versions. This book records the author's journey of discovery; he was familiar with SMath but not with Maple and set out to learn the more advanced application. It leads readers through the basic Maple features with physical science worked examples, giving them a firm base on which to build if more complex features interest them.
