well as limitations and assess opportunities for future
applications.
This book presents the synthetic methodologies as well as the
properties and potential usage of various ruthenium-containing
materials. Starting from the first examples of 'ruthenopolymers'
reported in the 1970s to the 3D architectures now synthesized,
these materials have shown their importance far beyond fundamental
polymer science. As well as highlighting the remarkable properties
and versatile applications, this book also addresses a key question
related to the applications of such heavy-metal-containing
materials from the perspective of achieving a sustainable future.
This book is of interest to both materials scientists and chemists
in academia and industry.
This book offers a complete diagnosis of concrete samples collected
from a pile cap block of residential buildings affected by internal
swelling reactions. Covering an extensive laboratory campaign to
evaluate the transport properties of concrete samples, as well as
their physical and chemical composition using advanced techniques
to analyse cores extracted from real buildings that have concrete
elements affected by internal swelling reactions (ISR). It features
several rehabilitation procedures, pile caps repair and
rehabilitation design, executed using strengthening procedures to
provide the complete restoration of the structural integrity of the
element deteriorated. These rehabilitation procedures proved to be
a good solution to retrofit pile cap deteriorated by expansions due
to internal swelling reactions of concrete. The book also offers a
systematic review of the current state of knowledge and it is a
valuable resource for scientists, students, and practitioners in
various scientific and engineering disciplines, namely, civil and
materials engineering, as well as and other interested parties.

The majority of the chemical elements form chemical compounds with
molecules of higher dimension (i.e., substantially exceeding
three). This fact is very important for the analysis of molecular
interactions in various areas: nanomedicine, nanotoxicology, and
quantum biology. The Geometry of Higher-Dimensional Polytopes
contains innovative research on the methods and applications of the
structures of binary compounds. It explores the study of geometry
polytopes from a higher-dimensional perspective, taking into
account the features of polytopes that are models of chemical
compounds. While highlighting topics including chemical compounds,
symmetry transformation, and DNA structures, this book is ideally
designed for researchers, academicians, and students seeking
current research on dimensions present in binary compounds.
This book describes the fundamentals and potential applications
of friction stir superplasticity for unitized structures .
Conventional superplastic forming of sheets is limited to the
thickness of 3 mm because the fine grained starting material is
produced by rolling. Friction stir superplasticity has grown
rapidly in the last decade because of the effectiveness of
microstructural refinement. The thickness of the material remains
almost constant, and that allows for forming of thick
sheets/plates, which was not possible before. The field has reached
a point where designers have opportunities to expand the extent of
unitized structures, which are structures in which the traditional
primary part and any supporting structures are fabricated as a
single unit. With advanced optimization and material
considerations, this class of structures can be lighter weight and
more efficient, making them less costly, as well as mechanically
less complex, reducing areas of possible failure.
Discusses how friction stir processing allows selective
microstructural refinement without thickness changeDemonstrates how
higher thickness sheets and plates can be superplastically
formedExamples are presented for aluminum, magnesium and titanium
alloysCovers the production of low-cost unitized structures by
selectively processing cast sheets/plates "

This book describes the operations and industrial processes related
to the production of steel. The chapters cover the second part of
the iron and steelmaking process, called steelmaking, presenting
the stages of the process until obtaining the finished steel
product in different formats for distinct applications. This book
reports significant operating variables of the processes and basic
operations of the steelmaking. The chapters contain numerous solved
exercises conceptually supported on the thermodynamic and kinetic
fundamentals of the production of steel from the pig iron in the
Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) and the production of steel and
ferroalloys in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). The thermal and
mechanic fundamentals of the hot rolling operations and the
mechanical fundamentals of the cold rolling, forming, and wire
drawing to obtain different steel products are also reported. The
book summarizes the strengths and uncertainties of steel as a
structural material.
Unconventional energy sources have gained and will continue to gain
an increasing share of energy systems around the world. Today,
hydrogen is recognized as a non-polluting energy carrier because it
does not contribute to global warming if it is produced from
renewable sources. Hydrogen is already part of today's chemical
industry, but as an energy source, its rare advantages can only be
obtained with the help of technologies. Currently, the fuel cell is
considered the cleanest sustainable energy. With the development of
fuel cells, hydrogen-based energy generation becomes a reality.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology for Stationary Applications is an
essential publication that focuses on the advantages of hydrogen as
a primary energy center and addresses its use in the sustainable
future of stationary applications. While highlighting a broad range
of topics including cost expectations, production methods, and
social impact, this publication explores all aspects of the
implementation and dissemination of fuel cell technology in the
hope of establishing a sustainable marketplace for it. This book is
ideally designed for fuel cell manufacturers, architects,
electrical engineers, civil engineers, environmental engineers,
advocates, manufacturers, mechanics, researchers, academicians, and
students.
This book is based on a series of lectures for an Astrophysics of
the Interstellar Medium (ISM) master's degree in Astrophysics and
Cosmology at Padova University. From the cold molecular phase in
which stars and planetary systems form, to the very hot coronal gas
that surrounds galaxies and galaxy clusters, the ISM is everywhere.
Studying its properties is vital for the exploration of virtually
any field in astronomy and cosmology. These notes give the student
a coherent and accurate mathematical and physical approach, with
continuous references to the real ISM in galaxies. The book is
divided into three parts. Part One introduces the equations of
fluid dynamics for a system at rest and acoustic waves, and then
explores the real ISM through the role of thermal conduction and
viscosity, concluding with a discussion of shock waves and
turbulence. In Part Two, the electromagnetic field is switched on
and its role in modulating shock waves and contrasting gravity is
studied. Part Three describes dust and its properties, followed by
the main stellar sources of energy. The last two chapters
respectively address the various components of the ISM and
molecular clouds and star formation.
