Have you heard? Milling at home can be less expensive and healthier than buying pre-ground flours! Much of the flour that is sold in grocery stores has been stripped of its nutrients and has extra ingredients and preservatives added to prolong shelf life. Not only that, but some flours, like almond and coconut, can run as high as $15 per bag! There has to be a better way. There is with The Homemade Flour Cookbook. Erin Alderson will explore the different ways to grind flour including electric and non-electric grinders, food processors, blenders, and even coffee grinders, making it easy for any do-it-yourself homemaker to have fresh flour whenever needed. Try out great grain recipes like Cheddar Rosemary Farro Scones, Zucchini Feta Empanadas, Einkorn Biscuit Cinnamon Rolls, and Black Pepper Pasta with Goat Cheese and Pesto. There are also dozens of Gluten-Free recipes. Check out Butternut Squash and Goat Cheese Lasagna, Cheddar jalapeno quesadillas with quinoa tortillas, Berry Crisp with Oat Dumplings, or Buckwheat Dutch Baby with Maple Cherries! There are even recipes for legume, nut, or seed flours. Flatbread with sun-dried tomato dip, Feta and Curried Red Lentil Dip, Coconut Pancakes with Citrus Compote, Honey Sunflower Biscuits with Jam and Dark Chocolate Dipped Almond Meal Biscotti are just a few of the recipes that you'll make with your own hand-milled flour!
Let's Fix Lunch! makes it easy (and fun!) to prepare meals that are

Vitamins and minerals are the building blocks of good health. But the heavily processed foods that are so common in today's modern diet are stripped of these nutrients, leaving many people nutrient deficient despite meeting (or exceeding) their daily calorie needs. The accepted solution is to take supplements created in a lab, but the dosage and interactions can be confusing, and supplements are loosely regulated and not always foolproof, especially since our bodies are designed to receive nutrients from natural, whole foods. Eat Your Vitamins features fifty key vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients essential to your health. You will find clear definitions of each nutrient along with the role it plays in the body, how it is best consumed and absorbed, recommended daily doses, and detailed lists of foods and natural sources that contain the vitamin along with a recipe for a nutrient-rich meal. Ditch the synthetic supplements and make the right choice about how to properly feed and fuel your body.

Coeliacs are people who suffer from a sensitive reaction to gluten, which is the protein found in wheat and rye. Similar substances are found in barley and oats. Since gluten damages the lining of the small intestine of coeliacs, it makes their ability to absorb adequate nutrients from food difficult, which results in severe illness resembling malnutrition. Coeliacs may be acutely ill with weight loss, tiredness, lethargy and breathlessness. The only treatment which can rectify a coeliac condition is a gluten-free diet. A coeliac must not eat any food which contains flour or wheat, barley or rye in any form. Ths means excluding bread, biscuits, crispbreads, cakes, pastry, pasta, breadcrumbs, semolina and food cooked in batter. Flour is also an ingredient in many tinned, packaged and processed foods as well as ready meals. A gluten-free diet can therefore pose major difficulties for the coeliac. This recipe book offers 200 recipes using special gluten-free flours, breads and pasta now available on the market, many of which coeliacs can obtain on a doctor's prescription.

The book, also, covers: how conventional food poses threats to our health and environment; why organic is a healthier, safer choice for us all; how organic certification ensure that organic food is produced to the highest standards; and, how the high costs of conventional foods are hidden in the subsidies we support. As this book shows, organic food clearly benefits our personal health as well as the environment. Eating organic contributes to a more sustainable world and a healthier future.

A healthy diet can help the young sports stars of tomorrow fulfil their potential. Around 85% of children regularly take part in sports activities outside lessons. Swimming is the most common activity for girls, with football for boys. 43% of children spend between 1-5 hours per week doing sport outside lessons (Sport England). But as any parent or coach knows, it's hard to get the right balance, especially if you're running between school and training sessions. Children don't always eat, or want to eat, the very foods that will help them compete at the highest level - the snacks and meals that will give them energy, help them keep going through a long training session, or recover afterwards. Throw into the mix the need to keep hydrated and lots of children are training and competing below par. Carefully researched and satisfying the real need for a nutrition book specifically for young athletes, Sports Nutrition for Young Athletes offers clear advice to sports coaches, teachers and parents of young people wanting to maximise their sports performance through eating healthily and sensibly. Find out about specific nutritional requirements for different sports - from running to swimming, gym to dance, racquet sports to football and rugby. Learn more about tricky weight issues, myths about body composition and the warning signs for eating disorders. This is a above all a practical book - written and road tested by bestselling nutrition author Anita Bean, and packed with nutritional tips, eating plans for training and competition, and easy, delicious and nutritious recipes and snacks to give your young sportsperson the competitive edge.
What does your favourite farmhouse cheese have in common with crusty sourdough bread, a glass of sparkling ginger beer or a bowl of marinated olives? The answer is each is a product of fermentation, a process that harnesses good bacteria in order to preserve ingredients and transform them into uniquely delicious foods with remarkable health benefits. Thanks to an increasing awareness of the crucial role probiotic-rich foods play in our wellbeing, the ancient art of fermentation is experiencing a renaissance. Add to this the joy, ease and economy of making fermented foods at home, and it's no wonder we are scrunching, pickling and bottling our way to better gut health and a deeper connection with our food. With this extensive collection, wholefood pioneer Holly Davis shares familiar and lesser-known recipes, as well as the wisdom and experience accumulated over 40 years of teaching fermentation techniques around the world. Her gentle and thorough guidance guarantees you will find a place in your home for one or more ferments that make your heart and stomach sing. |
