Leading in the New Academic Library (Paperback): Becky Albitz, Christine Avery, Diane Zabel Leading in the New Academic Library (Paperback)
Becky Albitz, Christine Avery, Diane Zabel
R1,681 Discovery Miles 16 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Providing perspectives of early- and mid-career librarians as well as highly seasoned professionals, this book offers leadership advice that will help academic librarians of all experience levels to surmount the issues they face and overcome new challenges. Academic libraries and librarianship have dramatically evolved in recent years—in everything from their collections and facilities to their relationships with faculty and internal and external partners. These changes demand different mindsets and new skills on the part of librarians. This book explains how the quality of leadership is the key component of successfully implementing innovative service and practices—and as a result, of the success of the library itself. To that end, it offers practical guidelines for implementing leadership principles and achieving success in this evolving culture. Coedited by a team of three highly experienced academic librarians, Leading in the New Academic Library gives actionable advice regarding subjects like helping staff gain new competencies, leading from the middle, and succession planning. The content also addresses hot topics such as the academic library's new role, the integration of IT into library organization and infrastructure, making data-driven decisions, renovating a library space to meet changing user needs, and collaborating with internal as well as external partners.

Digital Humanities for Librarians (Paperback): Emma Annette Wilson Digital Humanities for Librarians (Paperback)
Emma Annette Wilson
R1,682 Discovery Miles 16 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Digital Humanities For Librarians. Some librarians are born to Digital Humanities; some aspire to Digital Humanities; and some have Digital Humanities thrust upon them. Digital Humanities For Librarians is a one-stop resource for librarians and LIS students working in this growing new area of academic librarianship. The book begins by introducing Digital Humanities, addressing key questions such as, "What is it?", "Who does it?", "How do they do it?", "Why do they do it?", and "How can I do it?". This broad overview is followed by a series of practical chapters answering those questions with step-by-step approaches to both the digital and the human elements of Digital Humanities librarianship. Digital Humanities For Librarians covers a wide range of technologies currently used in the field, from creating digital exhibits, archives, and databases, to digital mapping, text encoding, and computational text analysis (big data for the humanities). However, the book never loses sight of the all-important human component to Digital Humanities work, and culminates in a series of chapters on management and personnel strategies in this area. These chapters walk readers through approaches to project management, effective collaboration, outreach, the reference interview for Digital Humanities, sustainability, and data management, making this a valuable resource for administrators as well as librarians directly involved in digital humanities work. There is also a consideration of budgeting questions, including strategies for supporting Digital Humanities work on a shoestring. . Special features include: *Case studies of a wide range of projects and management issues *Digital instructional documents guiding readers through specific digital technologies and techniques *An accompanying website featuring digital humanities tools and resources and digital interviews with librarians and scholars leading the way in Digital Humanities work across North America, from a range of larger and smaller institutions Whether you are a librarian primarily working in Digital Humanities for the first time, a student hoping to do so, or a librarian in a cognate area newly-charged with these responsibilities, Digital Humanities For Librarians will be with you every step of the way, drawing on the author's experiences and those of a network of librarians and scholars to give you the practical support and guidance needed to bring your Digital Humanities initiatives to life.

Crash Course in Dealing with Difficult Library Customers (Paperback): Shelley Elizabeth Mosley, Dennis C Tucker, Sandra Van... Crash Course in Dealing with Difficult Library Customers (Paperback)
Shelley Elizabeth Mosley, Dennis C Tucker, Sandra Van Winkle
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Libraries are public places-open to anyone and everyone. This book contains invaluable, practical tips for library staff who sometimes must deal with difficult or even dangerous individuals and situations. Every library experiences difficult patrons. Thorough preparation is the best defense: it's always much better to be proactive than reactive. The authors of Crash Course in Dealing with Difficult Library Customers realized that these kinds of situations are more universal than unique, despite the great variations in library environments and customer bases, and pooled their more than 100 years of experience to offer practical advice that will help library staff prepare for the many kinds of "worst case scenarios"-before they arise. The book identifies the basic types of problem-causing individuals, thoroughly overviews effective strategies for offsetting their actions, and explains how to successfully manage the stressful, emotionally charged situations that can arise. Drawing on their extensive real-world experience, the authors provide instructions for "last resort" options when dealing with illegal activities, acknowledge the rights of employees in difficult situations, and present strategies that will minimize staff members' stress levels when dealing with patrons. While this book will be extremely valuable to public library staff, it addresses common situations that can happen in public service at any type of library. Administrators who need to develop policies to protect their staff and their users will also find this unique work essential reading. Presents practical, down-to-earth approaches based on the authors' many years of real-world experience that can be applied in any type of library environment Provides advice about unpleasant situations in an accessible, non-threatening way that also injects an appropriate modicum of levity into a serious subject Supplies essential tools for dealing with difficult patrons ranging from "the censor" to "the VIP" to dangerous, unstable individuals Gives readers the knowledge they need to be prepared for handling potential problems, resulting in greater confidence and peace of mind at the workplace

Decolonial Archival Futures (Paperback): Krista McCracken, Skylee-Storm Hogan Decolonial Archival Futures (Paperback)
Krista McCracken, Skylee-Storm Hogan
R1,123 Discovery Miles 11 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Providing examples of successful approaches to unsettling Western archival paradigms from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia, this book showcases vital community archival work that will illuminate decolonial archival practices for archivists, curators, heritage practitioners, and others responsible for the stewardship of materials by and about Indigenous communities. Simply put, decolonial archival practices involve thinking about and consciously changing how historical knowledge is produced, communicated, and preserved. And though it is especially critical that scholars and archivists who work with records by and about Indigenous people critically consider the implications of their work, this perspective is an essential one for all members of the profession. By examining archival practices that push against and actively counter settler colonialism, this book challenges non-Indigenous practitioners to consider constructs of knowledge, which histories we tell, and how the past is presented. Guided by the authors’ incisive synthesis of theory and current practice, readers will learn where Western archival practice is situated in relation to the colonial histories of Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, and the ways in which archival structures have reinforced colonial relationships; a working definition of decolonial archival practice, which is rooted in concepts of community, reciprocity, and a desire to actively resist colonial recordkeeping practices; the implications of this approach for policy making, collection development, and arrangement and description; methods for reframing or reworking original order and provenance using digital technology, community participation, and removing hierarchical structures in order to meet the needs of Indigenous communities; examples of community-driven descriptive practices, in which Indigenous knowledge and languages are infused into archival description at both the fonds and file level; how the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), the Protocols for Native American Archival Material, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Library and Information Resources Network Protocols, and other cultural stewardship protocols can be implemented within archival practice; and more about the relationship building work that settler communities and researchers still need to do, demonstrated using examples of partnerships rooted in Indigenous knowledge structures, kinship ties, and relationships with the land.

Virtual Technical Services - A Handbook (Paperback): Mary Beth Weber, Melissa de Fino Virtual Technical Services - A Handbook (Paperback)
Mary Beth Weber, Melissa de Fino
R1,359 Discovery Miles 13 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Prior to the COVID pandemic, there was little published information to guide technical services operations on how to deal with crises and emergencies. Viewed as a backroom operation by administration, little thought historically has been given to how these employees might protect equipment and resources and continue to provide services that seamlessly support the rest of the library. Virtual Technical Services: A Handbook is the first to address emergency and crisis planning specifically for technical services. The authors address how to create an emergency plan and how to prepare for an uncertain future that will undoubtedly include other threats to our health and safety. We discuss how the pivot to remote work can revolutionize technical services librarianship and allow us to better serve the needs of a 21st Century library. As the WFH period extended longer than anticipated, libraries and other organizations realized both the challenges and benefits of working remotely. WFH is about more than just doing one's job, and we focus on employees as individuals with needs that include work/life balance, self-care, and the flexibility to meet life circumstances including childcare, eldercare, and appointments. A unique feature of our book is the focus on employee well-being, including burnout and self-care. Prior to COVID-19, employee well-being was typically not emphasized as part of personnel management. The risks to our health and safety and being removed from the physical workplace provided the opportunity to re-examine priorities and reframe them to forge a stronger and more collaborative relationship between employers and employees. Technical services personnel, in particular, are subject to burnout as their operations are frequently understaffed and they face competing demands of serving both libraries' physical needs and supporting electronic and digital resources. Management in a remote work environment has challenges that are not present in an on-site operation. Communication, setting expectations, and documentation and training take on added significance when WFH, as does accountability. Our book addresses these aspects of management through a WFH lens. The book also covers the return to work after a shift to remote, whether it is completely on-site, hybrid, or some combination. Normalization, determining staffing levels, employee accommodations, and an adjustment period are discussed. Since most technical services personnel have not previously had to pivot to remote on short notice and for an extended period, the book addresses these issues for libraries as they make decisions about repopulating their workplaces.

The Weeding Handbook - A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Rebecca Vnuk The Weeding Handbook - A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Rebecca Vnuk
R1,399 Discovery Miles 13 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Filled with field-tested strategies and adaptable collection development policies, this updated handbook will enable libraries to bloom by maintaining a collection that users actually use."Manages to be a thorough and informative source on weeding library collections and yet also an easy, engaging read ... Recommended." That rave review from Technicalities sums up the acclaim and appeal of this bestselling resource's first edition. Now Vnuk has revised and updated her text to keep pace with libraries' longer-term shifts in collection development and access, such as a growing emphasis on digital collections and managing duplicate physical materials. She demonstrates how weeding helps a library thrive by focusing its resources on those parts of the collection that are the most useful to its users. Walking collections staff through the proverbial stacks shelf by shelf, this book includes a new "Tales from the Front" feature, providing real-life case studies of librarians working on weeding projects; explains why weeding is important for a healthy library and how it can positively affect library budgets; systematically walks readers through a library's shelves, with recommended weeding criteria and call-outs in each area for the different considerations of large collections and smaller collections; offers easily adaptable, updated sample development plans which reflect the latest thinking in collection development; advises readers on weeding problematic materials, such as those that include racist themes and depictions; presents updated and expanded guidance on special considerations for youth collections; addresses reference, media, magazines and newspapers, e-books, and other special materials; shares guidance for determining how to delegate responsibility for weeding, plus pointers for getting other staff members on board; and gives advice for educating the community about the process, how to head off PR disasters, and what to do with weeded materials.
