Riot! - Tobacco, Reform and Violence in Eighteenth-Century Papantla, Mexico (Hardcover): Jake Frederick Riot! - Tobacco, Reform and Violence in Eighteenth-Century Papantla, Mexico (Hardcover)
Jake Frederick
R3,509 Discovery Miles 35 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An exploration of the Totonac native community of Papantla, Veracruz, during the last half of the eighteenth century. Told through the lens of violent revolt, this is the first book-length study devoted to Papantla during the colonial era. The book tells the story of a native community confronting significant disruption of its agricultural tradition, and the violence that change provoked. Papantlas story is told in the form of an investigation into the political, social, and ethnic experience of an agrarian community. The Bourbon monopolisation of tobacco in 1764 disturbed a fragile balance, and pushed long-term native frustrations to the point of violence. Through the stories of four uprisings, Jake Frederick examines the Totonacs increasingly difficult economic environment, their view of justice, and their political tactics. Riot! argues that for the native community of Papantla, the nature of colonial rule was, even in the waning decades of the colonial era, a process of negotiation rather than subjugation. The second half of the eighteenth century saw an increase in collective violence across the Spanish American colonies as communities reacted to the strains imposed by the various Bourbon reforms. Riot! provides a much needed exploration of what the colony-wide policy reforms of Bourbon Spain meant on the ground in rural communities in New Spain. The narrative of each uprising draws the reader into the crisis as it unfolds, providing an entree into an analysis of the event. The focus on the community provides a new understanding of the demographics of this rural community, including an account of the as yet unexamined black population of Papantla.

Business Development for the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industry (Hardcover, New Ed): Martin Austin Business Development for the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industry (Hardcover, New Ed)
Martin Austin
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Business Development in the Biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries accounts for over $5 billion in licensing deal value per year and much more than that in the value of mergers and acquisitions. Transactions range from licences to patented academic research, to product developments as licences, joint ventures and acquisition of intellectual property rights, and on to collaborations in development and marketing, locally or across the globe. Asset sales, mergers and corporate take-overs are also a part of the business development remit. The scope of the job can be immense, spanning the life-cycle of products from the earliest levels of research to the disposal of residual marketing rights, involving legal regulatory manufacturing, clinical development, sales and marketing and financial aspects. The knowledge and skills required of practitioners must be similarly broad, yet the availability of information for developing a career in business development is sparse. Martin Austin's highly practical guide spans the complete process and is based on his 30 years of experience in the industry and the well-established training programme that he has developed and delivers to pharmaceutical executives from across the world.

R794 R652 Discovery Miles 6 520 Save R142 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This work tells the full story of the weapons, including fighter-planes, tanks, ships, and guns, that America produced during the war to defeat the Axis powers, and how they were "sold" to those at home through the countless advertisements that appeared in popular magazines. Though well-known companies such as General Motors, Ford, Kelvinator, and B.F. Goodrich, and a whole host of others, could no longer sell their products to consumers, they instead turned their factories towards supplying the Arsenal of Democracy. In order to keep their names in the public spotlight, these companies advertised in great detail the weapons they were building; Cadillac touted its efforts in supplying components for Sherman tanks and P-38 Lightning fighters, Ford no longer built cars in Detroit, but B-24 Liberator bombers and Jeeps, while the home appliance company Kelvinator built aircraft components and flame-throwers. The story behind these advertisements, many of them stunning visuals which are here reproduced in color, is a unique aspect of World War II history that will both surprise and delight.

This book focuses on the lives, struggles, and contrasting perspectives of the 60,000 workers, military administrators, and technical staff employed in the largest, most strategic industry of the Nationalist government, the armaments industry based in the wartime capital, Chongqing. The author argues that China's arsenal workers participated in three interlocked conflicts between 1937 and 1953: a war of national liberation, a civil war, and a class war. The work adds to the scholarship on the Chinese revolution, which has previously focused primarily on rural China, showing how workers' alienation from the military officers directing the arsenals eroded the legitimacy of the Nationalist regime and how the Communists mobilized working-class support in Chongqing. Moreover, in emphasizing the urban, working-class, and nationalist components of the 1949 revolution, the author demonstrates the multiple sources of workers' identities and thus challenges previous studies that have exclusively stressed workers' particularistic or regional identities.

Outsourcing Clinical Development offers a guide to these new models and to future clinical outsourcing strategy. There is advice on the basis for an outsourcing strategy and guidance on how to work most productively with CROs (contract research organisations); geographical issues, including working in low-cost environments, are also covered. There is a detailed guide to selecting candidates, and managing the proposal, negotiation and contract process successfully; as well as reviewing outsourcing performance and developing fruitful long-term strategic relationships. The pharmaceutical outsourcing process is as complex and as influential as the clinical trials it supports. Outsourcing Clinical Development, with a powerful mix of perceptive insight from leading lights in the industry, advice on long-term strategic direction and tools for immediate help is a must-have read for pharmaceutical companies and their CRO partners.

Pharmaceutical Metrics - Measuring and Improving R & D Performance (Hardcover, New Ed): David S. Zuckerman Pharmaceutical Metrics - Measuring and Improving R & D Performance (Hardcover, New Ed)
David S. Zuckerman
R4,147 Discovery Miles 41 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'What gets measured gets fixed' and this is as true of the pharmaceutical industry as any other. The problem is that pharmaceutical businesses are complex. Drug research and development involves extended and expensive processes; defining appropriate metrics for these processes is not easy, yet ineffective or misguided metrics can be more damaging than none at all. David Zuckerman's Pharmaceutical Metrics is an extremely practical guide to selecting a system, selling it to top management, choosing and defining the right metrics for your system, communicating and displaying the results. And because metrics are about how to shape and develop your business, he explores how to deploy them organization-wide and make sure that they are driving business improvement. In order to reflect the needs of different types of pharmaceutical company the author uses four sample companies, throughout the book, to illustrate the principles for 'big pharma', 'micro pharma', a virtual development company and a CRO. This highly practical book provides a step-by-step guide to creating a state-of-the-art, strategy-driven metrics system for pharmaceutical R&D, supported by case studies of the techniques applied and tips for optimizing the system.

The Mercery of London - Trade, Goods and People, 1130-1578 (Hardcover, New edition): Anne F Sutton The Mercery of London - Trade, Goods and People, 1130-1578 (Hardcover, New edition)
Anne F Sutton
R4,510 Discovery Miles 45 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although mercers have long been recognised as one of the most influential trades in medieval London, this is the first book to offer a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the trade from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. The variety of mercery goods (linen, silk, worsted and small manufactured items including what is now called haberdashery) gave the mercers of London an edge over all competitors. The sources and production of all these commodities is traced throughout the period covered. It was as the major importers and distributors of linen in England that London mercers were able to take control of the Merchant Adventurers and the export of English cloth to the Low Countries. The development of the Adventurers' Company and its domination by London mercers is described from its first privileges of 1296 to after the fall of Antwerp. This book investigates the earliest itinerant mercers and the artisans who made and sold mercery goods (such as the silkwomen of London, so often mercers' wives), and their origins in counties like Norfolk, the source of linen and worsted. These diverse traders were united by the neighbourhood of the London Mercery on Cheapside and by their need for the privileges of the freedom of London. Extensive use of Netherlandish and French sources puts the London Mercery into the context of European Trade, and literary texts add a more personal image of the merchant and his preoccupation with his social status which rose from that of the despised pedlar to the advisor of princes. After a slow start, the Mercers' Company came to include some of the wealthiest and most powerful men of London and administer a wide range of charitable estates such as that of Richard Whittington. The story of how they survived the vicissitudes inflicted by the wars and religious changes of the sixteenth century concludes this fascinating and wide-ranging study.

From Modern Production to Imagined Primitive - The Social World of Coffee from Papua New Guinea (Paperback, New): Paige West From Modern Production to Imagined Primitive - The Social World of Coffee from Papua New Guinea (Paperback, New)
Paige West
R773 R730 Discovery Miles 7 300 Save R43 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this vivid ethnography, Paige West tracks coffee as it moves from producers in Papua New Guinea to consumers around the world. She illuminates the social lives of the people who produce coffee, and those who process, distribute, market, and consume it. The Gimi peoples, who grow coffee in Papua New Guinea's highlands, are eager to expand their business and social relationships with the buyers who come to their highland villages, as well as with the people working in Goroka, where much of Papua New Guinea's coffee is processed; at the port of Lae, where it is exported; and in Hamburg, Sydney, and London, where it is distributed and consumed. This rich social world is disrupted by neoliberal development strategies, which impose prescriptive regimes of governmentality that are often at odds with Melanesian ways of being in, and relating to, the world. The Gimi are misrepresented in the specialty coffee market, which relies on images of primitivity and poverty to sell coffee. By implying that the "backwardness" of Papua New Guineans impedes economic development, these images obscure the structural relations and global political economy that actually cause poverty in Papua New Guinea.

R877 Discovery Miles 8 770 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Financial Times Business Top Title March 2022 How could a large collection of small companies, most with fewer than 50 employees, rise to compete with Big Pharma, one of the world's most breathtakingly expensive and highly regulated industries? Beginning in the 1970s, several scientific breakthroughs promised to transform the creation of new medicines. As investors sought to capitalize on these Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, the biotech industry grew to thousands of small companies around the world. Each sought to emulate what the major pharmaceutical companies had been doing for a century or more, but without the advantages of scale, scope, experience, and massive resources. Biotech companies have met the challenge by creating nearly 40% more of the most important treatments for previously unmet medical needs. Moreover, they have done so with much lower overall costs. From Breakthrough to Blockbuster: The Business of Biotechnology focuses on both the companies themselves and the broader biotech ecosystem that supports them. It paints a portrait of the crucial roles played by academic research, venture capital, contract research organizations, the capital markets, and pharmaceutical companies, demonstrating how a supportive environment enabled the entrepreneurial biotech industry to create novel medicines with unprecedented efficiency. In doing so, it also offers insights for any industry seeking to innovate in uncertain and ambiguous conditions.

Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry (Hardcover, New Ed): Janice MacLennan Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry (Hardcover, New Ed)
Janice MacLennan
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Written by John Lidstone and Janice MacLennan, the second edition of Marketing Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry became accepted as the bible for the industry. In this new companion book Janice MacLennan picks up two of the themes touched on in Marketing Planning - market segmentation and branding, and the inter-relationship between these two - and with this book makes them key topics for discussion. Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry begins by exploring what branding is and why it is of importance, particularly to the pharmaceutical sector. The book then goes on to show how branding can be integrated into the early stages of the commercialization process for new products, both in theory and in the 'real' world. The book provides a step-by-step guide to brand planning, using market segmentation as the starting point. The book is split into two parts, the first dealing comprehensively with brand planning for products yet to get to the market, with the second part applying the same process to products that are already on the market. Both parts are extremely pragmatic, full of pertinent examples and insights from the pharmaceutical industry, and are directly applicable to your own brand planning. Brand Planning for the Pharmaceutical Industry concludes by confronting the problems that organizations are likely to have in actually making brand planning an integral part of their work and presents strategies for dealing with them.
