Other chapters discuss the Fur (ferric uptake regulator) proteins, a superfamily of prokaryotic transcription factors that operate at the primary steps in the hierarchy of stress responses. The current knowledge on the complex regulation of Fur proteins in cyanobacteria are also summarized. Additional chapters review various quantitation methods for phytochelatins, analyse the complete complement of metal transporters from various Helicobacter species and discuss the preparation of novel pharmaceuticals to fight infections causing more than 20% of overall number of lethal outcomes.

Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Angiogenesis in the Metabolic Syndrome (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Raquel Soares, Carla Costa Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Angiogenesis in the Metabolic Syndrome (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Raquel Soares, Carla Costa
R4,620 Discovery Miles 46 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a highly prevalent condition in developed countries and is a cluster of several risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease that includes increased body mass index/waist circumference, visceral obesity, insulin resistance, hyperclycaemia, dyslipidaemia and hypertension, which are all major causes of morbidity and death.

This volume provides a critical review and discussion of the knowledge gathered on MS and analyzes the interplay between oxidative stress, chronic inflammation and angiogenesis features. There is a special focus on recent discoveries and progress toward possible therapeutic strategies, such as the role of glucose transporters within MS; the effects of polyphenols as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic compounds.

The role of NFkB, nitric oxide synthases, hypoxia-inducible factors, and many other molecules that play a part in the development of oxidative stress and inflammation as well as angiogenesis is also covered.

This book fills the gap between basic science and medical care, and provides the reader with the skills to apply rigorous basic science to clinical settings of metabolic syndrome-associated disorders.

Cardiovascular disease and mortality risk are significantly increased in people with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of interrelated metabolic disorders including obesity, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. A complex interplay between predisposing and protective factors ultimately determines whether an individual will develop this set of disorders or not. Genetic factors are one of the significant contributors that predispose to, or protect against, each component of the metabolic syndrome. As in other complex diseases and traits, such genetic factors are likely to be multiple and interacting, with individual polymorphisms producing only a moderate effect. The identification of genetic variants influencing the metabolic syndrome is of great importance to understanding pathogenesis, identifying groups of individuals with different relative risk, and developing or improving therapies against this cluster of metabolic disorders. This has greatly stimulated both theoretical and applied genetic research in recent years. A range of new analytical tools has been developed for the dissection of complex traits. Applied genetic analyses have identified large numbers of candidate markers and chromosomal regions (over 600 for obesity, which represents only one of the disorders of this cluster). In this chapter, the authors present a basic overview of the genetic approaches currently used for the identification of candidate genetic factors involved in the metabolic syndrome. The authors also summarise current evidence suggesting that genetic variants within elements of the endocrine system are directly involved in the risk of the metabolic syndrome. The authors focused their attention on endocrine pathways for which candidate genetic variants have been identified, and they introduced the foundations of a new hypothesis which postulates the involvement of a network of endocrine genetic setpoints as a combined contributor to the risk of the metabolic syndrome.

Enterovirus Infections & Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover): Luis Sarmiento-P erez Enterovirus Infections & Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (Hardcover)
Luis Sarmiento-P erez
R3,436 Discovery Miles 34 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Enteroviruses have been examined for their possible role in the etiology of type 1 diabetes for nearly 40 years. It is now evident from studies in several countries that enterovirus infection accompanies or precedes the onset of diabetes in many individuals. These evidences include the isolation of coxsackievirus B4 from the pancreas of a child at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, several epidemiological and prospective studies showing that some cases of type 1 diabetes are strongly associated with enterovirus infections, seasonal incidence studies, case-control studies that show an increased prevalence and levels of IgM antibodies to enterovirus in newly diagnosed patients. Other evidences involves several case studies in which diabetes develops after an enterovirus infections, increased T cell response to enterovirus antigens in type 1 diabetic patients, suggestions that enterovirus infections during pregnancy might initiate the events leading to childhood diabetes, and a higher frequency of enterovirus RNA in the serum/blood of type 1 diabetic patients at diagnosis. This book Provides a better understanding of enteroviral biology and the potential alternative pathogenic mechanisms through which enteroviruses may cause diabetes.

Since cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease is the leading cause of death for adults in developed countries, many medical studies focus on treating or preventing heart disease and stroke. The metabolic syndrome, a collection of unhealthy body measurements and abnormal laboratory test results, may identify persons at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Aggressive lifestyle modification and possible use of medications to treat the conditions that make up the metabolic syndrome may reduce a person's chances of developing heart disease or stroke. The metabolic syndrome has also been called syndrome X or insulin resistance syndrome.

During the past decades, intensive collaborative research in the fields of chronic and acute inflammatory disorders has resulted in a better understanding of the pathophysiology and diagnosis of these diseases. Modern therapeutic approaches remain unsatisfactory and shock, sepsis and multiple organ failure (MOF) are still a great challenge in intensive care medicine. Furthermore, treatment of inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis or psoriasis represents an unresolved problem as well. Many factors contribute to the complex course of inflammatory reactions. Microbiological, immunological and toxic agents are able to initiate the inflammatory response by activating a variety of humoural and cellular mediators. In the early phase of inflammation interleukins and lipid-mediators are excessively released and play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of organ dysfunction. Cellular lipid membranes represent a dynamic high turnover barrier system, which separate the intracellular from the extracellular space and easily adapt to respective demands. In addition to this barrier function membrane lipids (arachidonic acid) can be oxygenized to biologically active lipid mediators (eicosanoids). These function as "local mediators" which can quickly reach considerable concentrations and, due to their short half life, act in intercellular microenvironments. Two omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 FA) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are mainly found in maritime sources, as opposed to omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in terrestrial sources (the typical western diet). Contemporary nutritional habits, emphasising industrially produced vegetable oils and animal fats, have disturbed this balance, resulting in a proportional decrease of omega-3 FA. This book presents an update of the pathophysiological impact of lipid mediators in inflammatory disorders and summarises the recent development of therapeutic approaches.

Calreticulin (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2003): Paul Eggleton, Marek Michalak Calreticulin (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2003)
Paul Eggleton, Marek Michalak
R4,534 Discovery Miles 45 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book focuses on the latest discoveries on calreticulin, calnexin and other endoplasmic reticulum proteins. Calreticulin has been implicated to affect diverse cellular function and play a role in many pathologies including protein folding disorders, cardiac pathologies, cancer and autoimmunity. This book contains contributions from the world leaders in the area of endoplasmic reticulum function, protein folding, Calcium homeostasis and autoimmunity. It raises many intriguing questions about calreticulin, calnexin and the endoplasmic reticulum and gives a unique opportunity to realize the significance of these calcium-binding chaperones. The book is unique in every respect and we are not aware of any other publication focusing on these aspects of endoplasmic reticulum biology. Because of a central role of endoplasmic reticulum, calreticulin and calnexin in virtually all cellular functions, the book should be of interest to everyone in the biological sciences.

I Domains in Integrins (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Donald Gullberg I Domains in Integrins (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Donald Gullberg
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In vertebrates, the integrin family includes 24 members. As the alpha-chains were sequenced, some were observed to have an inserted domain similar to the A domain in several matrix and complement proteins. This inserted ligand binding domain is interactive and was called the I domain in integrins. More recently structural data have shown that an integrin beta-chain also contains an I domain. Nine of the currently known 18 alpha-chains contain an I domain.
This book systematically goes through the current knowledge about these integrins, including the newest additions to the integrin family, the collagen-binding alpha10beta1 and alpha11beta1 integrins. The book discusses ligand binding, signalling properties, knock-out phenotypes and possible involvement in disease. This book comprehensively reviews the current knowledge about I domains in integrins and will serve as a useful reference book for scientists in this field.

Annexins - Biological Importance and Annexin-Related Pathologies (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Joanna Bandorowicz-Pikula Annexins - Biological Importance and Annexin-Related Pathologies (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Joanna Bandorowicz-Pikula
R3,001 Discovery Miles 30 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Annexins is focused on a specific family of calcium and membrane-binding proteins, annexins, ubiquitously spread within living organisms, including animals, plants and fungi. The volume covers important areas of annexinology. The characterization of structural-functional relationship within the annexin family of proteins, together with emerging transgenic animal models, provides an up-to-date overview of potential physiological roles of annexins. Growing evidence of participation of annexins in human diseases, called annexinopathies, related to disturbances in signal transduction, vesicular traffic, ion homeostasis and energy metabolism within the cell.
The book will attract a broad scientific audience, not only scientists interested in annexins, but also others involved in multidisciplinary studies, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. It can be used in courses relating to special topics such as calcium homeostasis, calcium-binding proteins, membrane structure and transport properties, various signal transduction pathways, and membrane trafficking.
