Minority Group Influence - Agenda Setting, Formulation, and Public Policy (Hardcover, New): Paula D. McClain Minority Group Influence - Agenda Setting, Formulation, and Public Policy (Hardcover, New)
Paula D. McClain
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although there has been intense interest in racial minorities and public policy, most research has focused on the implementation of policies after legislative passage or on the consequent effects of those policies. Few studies have focused on the definitional stage of the policy process--agenda setting--or have examined the way issues of concern to minority populations are raised. This volume fills that void by examining where policy issues originate and the impact of racial, ethnic, and other minority groups on the agenda setting process and the formulation of public policy. The work will be of interest to scholars in public policy, ethnic studies, government, and politics.

Citizenship and Ethnicity - The Growth and Development of a Democratic Multiethnic Institution (Hardcover): Feliks Gross Citizenship and Ethnicity - The Growth and Development of a Democratic Multiethnic Institution (Hardcover)
Feliks Gross
R2,680 Discovery Miles 26 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Today, all industrialized states are multinational. However, as Political Sociologist Feliks Gross points out, there remains considerable debate and experimentation on how to organize a multiethnic, democratic, and humane state. Gross examines various types of multiethnic states as well as their early origins and prospects for success. In the past, minorities were usually formed as a consequence of conquest or migration; minorities tended to have an inferior status, subordinated to the ruling, dominant ethnic class.

While Athens provides an early example of a state formed by alliance and association, the Romans advanced this concept when they extended to subjected peoples the status by means of citizenship. After the fall of Rome, citizenship continued in Italian and other continental cities. In England, subjectship associated with individual freedom had native roots. The American and French Revolutions revived and created the modern definition of citizenship. Along with Rome, however, only the United States provides an example of a successful multiethnic state of continental dimensions.

Law, Lawyers and Race - Critical Race Theory from the United States to Europe (Hardcover): Mathias Moeschel Law, Lawyers and Race - Critical Race Theory from the United States to Europe (Hardcover)
Mathias Moeschel
R4,170 Discovery Miles 41 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is virtually unheard of in European scholarship, especially among legal scholars. Law, Lawyers and Race: Critical Race Theory from the United States to Europe endeavours to fill this gap by providing an overview of the definition and consequences of CRT developed in American scholarship and describing its transplantation and application in the continental European context. The CRT approach adopted in this book illustrates the reasons why the relationship between race and law in European civil law jurisdictions is far from anodyne. Law plays a critical role in the construction, subordination and discrimination against racial minorities in Europe, making it comparable, albeit in slightly different ways, to the American experience of racial discrimination. Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-Roma and anti-Black racism constitute a fundamental factor, often tacitly accepted, in the relationship between law and race in Europe. Consequently, the broadly shared anti-race and anti-racist position is problematic because it acts to the detriment of victims of racism while privileging the White, Christian, male majority. This book is an original exploration of the relationship between law and race. As such it crosses the disciplinary divide, furthering both legal scholarship and research in Race and Ethnicity Studies.

Public Policies in Shared Societies - A Comparative Approach (Hardcover): M. Fitzduff Public Policies in Shared Societies - A Comparative Approach (Hardcover)
M. Fitzduff
R2,914 R1,879 Discovery Miles 18 790 Save R1,035 (36%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through various factors from the globalization of skills to wars and refugee movements, societies and communities throughout the world are changing to become increasingly diverse in their racial, ethnic and religious make up. The result is that many governments and societies face a considerable struggle over how to manage community tensions within and between their borders. Through thought-provoking chapters from contributors working in a range of disciplines, Public Policies in Contested Societies explores how everyday processes such as how we organize our working and political lives; develop our policing, health and education systems; protect the environment or respond to cultural differences can all help or hinder such work. Drawing upon examples from over 50 countries, the book shows how many institutions are now adapting their policies and practices to help create more equal, inclusive and peaceful societies. The book is an inspiration and a practical resource for anyone who is interested in helping to shape how future societies can positively welcome the diversity that will be the hallmark of all societies in the decades ahead.

Decolonising the Camera - Photography in Racial Time (Paperback): Mark Sealy Decolonising the Camera - Photography in Racial Time (Paperback)
Mark Sealy
R491 Discovery Miles 4 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines how Western photographic practice has been used as a tool for creating Eurocentric and violent visual regimes, and demands that we recognise and disrupt the ingrained racist ideologies that have tainted photography since its inception in 1839. Decolonising the Camera trains Mark Sealy's sharp critical eye on the racial politics at work within photography, in the context of heated discussions around race and representation, the legacies of colonialism, and the importance of decolonising the university. Sealy analyses a series of images within and against the violent political reality of Western imperialism, and aims to extract new meanings and develop new ways of seeing that bring the Other into focus. The book demonstrates that if we do not recognise the historical and political conjunctures of racial politics at work within photography, and their effects on those that have been culturally erased, made invisible or less than human by such images, then we remain hemmed within established orthodoxies of colonial thought concerning the racialised body, the subaltern and the politics of human recognition. With detailed analyses of photographs - included in an insert - by Alice Seeley Harris, Joy Gregory, Rotimi Fani-Kayode and others, and spanning more than 100 years of photographic history, Decolonising the Camera contains vital visual and written material for readers interested in photography, race, human rights and the effects of colonial violence.

Turning Turk - English Theater and the Multicultural Mediterranean (Hardcover, New): D Vitkus Turning Turk - English Theater and the Multicultural Mediterranean (Hardcover, New)
D Vitkus
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Turning Turk looks at contact between the English and other cultures inthe early modern Mediterranean, and analyzes the representation of thatexperience on the London stage. Vitkus's book demonstrates that theEnglish encounter with exotic alterity, and the theatrical representationsinspired by that encounter, helped to form the emergent identity of an English nation that was eagerly fantasizing about having an empire but was still in the preliminary phase of its colonizing drive. Vitkus' research shows how plays about the multi-cultural Mediterranean participated in this process of identity formation, and how anxieties about religious conversion, foreign trade and miscegenation were crucial factors in the formation of that identity.

Solomon Northup
R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

First published in 1853, 12 Years a Slave is the riveting true story of a free black American who was sold into slavery, remaining there for a dozen years until he finally escaped. This powerfully written memoir details the horrors of slave markets, the inhumanity practiced on southern plantations, and the nobility of a man who persevered in some of the worst of conditions, a man who never ceased to hope that he would find freedom and see his beloved family again. This edition has been slightly edited--for spelling and punctuation only--for easier reading by a modern audience. It also includes two helpful appendixes not found in the original book. Rethinking Today's Minorities (Hardcover, New): Vincent Parrillo Rethinking Today's Minorities (Hardcover, New)
Vincent Parrillo
R2,677 Discovery Miles 26 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The characteristics of minorities in the United States have changed significantly over the past twenty years. Today's better-educated, more highly skilled immigrants must merge with more acculturated minority groups to achieve assimilation while still preserving the rich diversity of their ethnic heritages. This concept is one focus of Rethinking Today's Minorities, a collection of articles by some of the nation's foremost experts in the field of intergroup relations. This volume offers new conceptual overviews by which to compare and evaluate acculturation. The essays also focus on rethinking the nature of minorities long present in the United States, including African, Native, and Asian Americans. Suggestions for policy changes and programs for social action designed to address the needs of minority groups are also included. Following an introductory overview of the changing demographics of today's minorities, the contributors then discuss major developments in minority communities such as the disappearance of formerly distinctive European-American ethnic groups, the continuation of affirmative action, and the molding of policies to benefit Native Americans and refugees. The book then includes essays on the growth of the Puerto Rican community in the U.S. and the emerging Iranian American middle class. The study concludes with a challenge to the media for its role in perpetuating ethnic stereotypes. Rethinking Today's Minorities will be an excellent supplemental text for graduate or undergraduate courses in race and ethnic relations, sociology of minorities, American studies, and immigration history. It will also be an important reference book for school and public libraries.

A Feminist Theory of Violence - A Decolonial Perspective (Paperback): Francoise Verges A Feminist Theory of Violence - A Decolonial Perspective (Paperback)
Francoise Verges; Translated by Melissa Thackway
R327 Discovery Miles 3 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'A robust, decolonial challenge to carceral feminism' - Angela Y. Davis ***Winner of an English PEN Award 2022*** The mainstream conversation surrounding gender equality is a repertoire of violence: harassment, rape, abuse, femicide. These words suggest a cruel reality. But they also hide another reality: that of gendered violence committed with the complicity of the State. In this book, Francoise Verges denounces the carceral turn in the fight against sexism. By focusing on 'violent men', we fail to question the sources of their violence. There is no doubt as to the underlying causes: racial capitalism, ultra-conservative populism, the crushing of the Global South by wars and imperialist looting, the exile of millions and the proliferation of prisons - these all put masculinity in the service of a policy of death. Against the spirit of the times, Francoise Verges refuses the punitive obsession of the State in favour of restorative justice.

Global Management, Local Labour - Turkish Workers and Modern Industry (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): T. Nichols, N. Sugur Global Management, Local Labour - Turkish Workers and Modern Industry (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
T. Nichols, N. Sugur
R2,771 Discovery Miles 27 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Little discussion about "globalization" has concerned one of the truly global forces--the management of multi-national and large domestic corporations--and the significance of modern management practices for workers in the developing world. This book examines the nature of work in the modern corporate sector in Turkey with special reference to three industries, white goods, cars and textiles. Based on extensive interviews, it questions some common assumptions in the modern western social science literature, especially in North America and Britain.

Antisocial Language Teaching - English and the Pervasive Pathology of Whiteness (Paperback): JPB Gerald Antisocial Language Teaching - English and the Pervasive Pathology of Whiteness (Paperback)
JPB Gerald
R683 Discovery Miles 6 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The centering of whiteness in English Language Teaching (ELT) renders the industry callous, corrupt and cruel; or, antisocial. Using the diagnostic criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder as a rhetorical device, this book examines major issues with the ideologies and institutions behind the discipline of ELT and diagnoses the industry as in dire need of treatment, with the solution being a full decentering of whiteness. A vision for a more just version of ELT is offered as an alternative to the harm caused by its present-day incarnation. With a unique linkage of discourse on whiteness, language and ability, this book will be necessary reading for students, academics and administrators involved in ELT around the world.

Black Resistance to British Policing (Hardcover): Adam Elliott-Cooper Black Resistance to British Policing (Hardcover)
Adam Elliott-Cooper
R1,021 R896 Discovery Miles 8 960 Save R125 (12%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

As police racism unsettles Britain's tolerant self-image, Black resistance to British policing details the activism that made movements like Black Lives Matter possible. Elliott-Cooper analyses racism beyond prejudice and the interpersonal - arguing that black resistance confronts a global system of racial classification, exploitation and violence. Imperial cultures and policies, as well as colonial war and policing highlight connections between these histories and contemporary racisms. But this is a book about resistance, considering black liberation movements in the 20th century while utilising a decade of activist research covering spontaneous rebellion, campaigns and protest in the 21st century. Drawing connections between histories of resistance and different kinds of black struggle against policing is vital, it is argued, if we are to challenge the cutting edge of police and prison power which harnesses new and dangerous forms of surveillance, violence and criminalisation. -- .

Ethnic Inequalities and Public Sector Governance (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Y. Bangura Ethnic Inequalities and Public Sector Governance (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Y. Bangura
R2,821 Discovery Miles 28 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributors discuss the links between ethnicity, inequality and governance. Their findings suggest that it is not the existence of diversity" per se," but "types of diversity" that explain potentials for conflict or cohesion in multiethnic societies. Relative equality has been achieved in the public sectors of countries that are highly fragmented or those with ethnicity-sensitive policies, but not in those with ethnicity-blind policies. The book is critical of approaches to conflict management that underplay background conditions in shaping choices.

Mark Brilliant
R1,444 Discovery Miles 14 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Historians of the Civil Rights Movement have long set their sights on the struggles of African Americans in the South and, more recently, North. In doing so, they either omit the West or merge it with the North, defined as anything outside the former Confederacy. Historians of the American West have long set the region apart from the South and North, citing racial diversity as one of the West's defining characteristics. This book integrates the two, examining the Civil Rights Movement in the West in order to bring the West to the Civil Rights Movement. In particular, it explores the challenge that California's racial diversity posed for building a multiracial civil rights movement, focusing on litigation and legislation initiatives advanced by civil rights reformers (lawyers, legislators, and advocacy organizations) on behalf of the state's different racial groups. A tension between sameness and difference cut through California's civil rights history. On the one hand, the state's civil rights reformers embraced a common goal - equality of opportunity through anti-discrimination litigation and legislation. To this end, they often analogized the plights of racial minorities, accentuating the racism in general that each group faced in order to help facilitate coalition building across groups. This tension - and its implications for the cultivation of a multiracial civil rights movement - manifested itself from the moment that one San Francisco-based NAACP leader expressed his wish for "a united front of all the minority groups" in 1944. Variations proved major enough to force the litigation down discrete paths, reflective of how legalized segregation affected African Americans, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans in different ways. This "same but different" tension continued into the 1950s and 1960s, as civil rights reformers ventured down anti-discrimination roads that began where legalized segregation ended. In the end, despite their endorsement of a common goal and calls for a common struggle, California's civil rights reformers managed to secure little coalescence - and certainly nothing comparable to the movement in the South. Instead, the state's civil rights struggles unfolded along paths that were mostly separate. The different axes of racialized discrimination that confronted the state's different racialized groups called forth different avenues of redress, creating a civil rights landscape criss-crossed with color lines rather than bi-sected by any single color line.

India Retold: Dialogues with Independent Documentary Filmmakers in India is an attempt to situate and historicize the engagement of independent documentary filmmakers with the postcolonial India and its discourses with a focus on their independent documentary practices. Structured as an interview collection, the book examines how these documentary filmmakers, though not a homogeneous category, practice their independence through their ideology, their filmmaking praxis, their engagement with the everyday and their formal experiments. As a sparsely studied filmmakers, the book through meticulously tracing a wide ranging historical transitions (often marked by communal conflicts and the forces of globalization) not only details the ways in which independent filmmakers in India address the questions of postcolonial nation and its modernist projects but also explores their idiosyncratic views of these filmmakers which are characterized by a definitive departure from the logic of commercial films or state-sponsored documentary films. More important in many ways, these documentary filmmakers expose incongruences in national institutions and programs, embrace the voice of the underrepresented, and thus, imagine an alternative vision of the nation. During the last three years of the execution of the project, thirty Indian documentary filmmakers are interviewed in this book. Given the dearth of quality interviews and little theoretical engagement with documentary as a genre, this book would not only fill in the gap in scholarship but also would serve as an authentic guide for interested readers and for documentary filmmakers alike.

Globalization, Labor Export and Resistance - A Study of Filipino Migrant Domestic Workers in Global Cities (Paperback, New):... Globalization, Labor Export and Resistance - A Study of Filipino Migrant Domestic Workers in Global Cities (Paperback, New)
Ligaya Lindio McGovern
R1,604 Discovery Miles 16 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Moving beyond polemical debates on globalization, this study considers complex intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality and class within the field of globalized labor. As a significant contribution to the on-going debate on the role of neoliberal states in reproducing gender-race-class inequality in the global political economy, the volume examines the aggressive implementation of neoliberal policies of globalization in the Philippines, and how labor export has become a contradictory feature of the country's international political economy while being contested from below. Lindio-McGovern presents theoretical and ethnographic insights from observational and interview data gathered during fieldwork in various global cities-Hong Kong, Taipei, Rome, Vancouver, Chicago and Metro-Manila. The result is a compelling weave of theory and experience of exploitation and resistance, an important development in discourses and literature on globalization and social movements seeking to influence regimes that exploit migrant women as cheap labor to sustain gendered global capitalism. Globalization, Labor Export and Resistance: A Study of Filipino Migrant Domestic Workers in Global Cities, is an invaluable resource for scholars, researchers, policy makers, non-governmental organizations, community organizers, students of globalization, trade and labor politics. It will be useful in the fields of women/gender studies, labor studies, transnational social movements, political economy, development, international migration, international studies, international fieldwork and qualitative/feminist research.

Older People Giving Care - Helping Family and Community (Hardcover): Sally K. Gallagher Older People Giving Care - Helping Family and Community (Hardcover)
Sally K. Gallagher
R2,150 Discovery Miles 21 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the few studies of how the elderly help others through formal and informal volunteerism. While a large number of studies focus on the help older people receive from relatives and friends, this work examines the many ways in which older people are involved in giving care to others. Written by a sociologist and based on a stratified sample of hundreds of individuals, this study assesses a number of dimensions of care giving. While much of this labor goes unnoticed, it is central to the building and maintenance of family and community ties, and reveals ways in which social life is organized around aging, gender, and marriage. Patterns of formal volunteerism and informal care are studied in relation to age, sex, marital status, and other important variables that affect this essential but underplayed aspect of American community life.

Racism and Cultural Diversity - Cultivating Racial Harmony through Counselling, Group Analysis, and Psychotherapy (Paperback):... Racism and Cultural Diversity - Cultivating Racial Harmony through Counselling, Group Analysis, and Psychotherapy (Paperback)
M. J. Maher
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mary J. Maher writes for all those interested in the dynamics of racism, from professionals in counseling, group analysis and psychotherapy working in multiracial and multicultural societies to those exposed to racism who need help in dealing with the impact of their experiences. She also addresses the concept of victims becoming perpetrators if support is not given to contain the process. Herself a group analyst, the author experienced at first-hand racial discrimination within the system, but rather than succumb has instead produced an enduring and proficient work that draws heavily on personal experience. Combining years of counseling skill with a natural compassion, she makes the subject of racism approachable, thus motivating all those wanting to explore the issues. For people whose experience of broken attachments crosses racial lines, this book is possibly the first to use Bowlby s Attachment Theory as a framework for understanding racism. In her endeavor to create harmony among differing cultures, Maher has written an insightful must-read for working with, and understanding, people of diverse races."

Prejudice - The Target's Perspective (Hardcover): Janet K. Swim, Charles Stangor Prejudice - The Target's Perspective (Hardcover)
Janet K. Swim, Charles Stangor
R3,564 Discovery Miles 35 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book turns the tables on the way prejudice has been looked at in the past. Almost all of the current information on prejudice focuses on the person holding prejudiced beliefs. This book, however, provides the first summary of research focusing on the intended victims of prejudice. Divided into three sections, the first part discusses how people identify prejudice, what types of prejudice they encounter, and how people react to this prejudice in interpersonal and intergroup settings. The second section discusses the effect of prejudice on task performance, assessment of ones own abilities, self-esteem, and stress. The final section examines how people cope with prejudice, including a discussion of coping mechanisms, reporting sexual harassment, and how identity is related to effective coping.
Key Features
* Includes an introduction, the consequences of prejudice, and how to cope with prejudice
* The editors are top researchers in the field of prejudice
* All the contributors are major figures in the social psychological analysis of intergroup relationships

Race, Ethnicity and Religion in Conflict Across Asia (Paperback): Kunal Mukherjee Race, Ethnicity and Religion in Conflict Across Asia (Paperback)
Kunal Mukherjee
R1,215 Discovery Miles 12 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book looks at conflict zones in the Asia Pacific with a special focus on secessionist groups/movements in the Indian Northeast, Tibet, Chinese Xinjiang, the Burmese borderlands, Kashmir in South Asia, CHT in Bangladesh, South Thailand, and Aceh in Indonesia. These conflict zones are predominantly ethnic minority provinces, which by and large do not share a sense of one-ness with the country that they are currently a part of; most of these insurgencies have had strong linkages with separatist nationalist groups in the region. Methodologically, the author uses extensive fieldwork, interview data, and participant observation from these conflict zones to take a bottom-up approach, giving importance to the voices of ordinary people and/or the residents of these conflict zones whose voices have generally been ignored. Although the book looks at both the historical background and contemporary dimensions of these conflicts, the author focuses on exploring how the role of race, ethnicity and religion in these conflicts can be both direct and indirect. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of conflict and security in contemporary Asia with a background in politics, history, IR, security studies, religion, and sociology.
