In today's multi-ethnic classroom, multiculturalism plays an
increasingly vital role. What it is, how it developed, and what it
means for education, especially music education, are the questions
that form the essence of this book. Music, Education, and
Multiculturalism traces the growth and development of multicultural
music education in the United States from its start in the early
1900s to the present, and describes the state of multicultural
music education internationally.
The songs and pieces in the book were selected from the author's work with young people over a period of more than fifty years, from kindergarten to high school. They are not intended so much for the specialized Waldorf music lesson, but mainly for all of those times when five or ten minutes of making music can bring a joyful element into the classroom and the home, as well as to subjects as diverse as mythology and mathematics. Includes CD with 69 songs sung by Peter Patterson
Every title in this series is packed full of interesting facts and amazing photographs and illustrations. Each chapter is short so even the most reluctant reader won't be daunted by the amount of text.

Before there was hip hop, there was DJ Kool Herc. On a hot day at the end of summer in 1973 Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party at a park in the South Bronx. Her brother, Clive Campbell, spun the records. He had a new way of playing the music to make the breaks--the musical interludes between verses--longer for dancing. He called himself DJ Kool Herc and this is "When the Beat Was Born." From his childhood in Jamaica to his youth in the Bronx, Laban Carrick Hill's book tells how Kool Herc came to be a DJ, how kids in gangs stopped fighting in order to breakdance, and how the music he invented went on to define a culture and transform the world.
Learn to play the violin with popular pieces - lessons and sheet music for beginners This pupil's book provides a lively and comprehensive introduction to the very first steps of playing the violin. It is part of the Abracadabra Strings Beginners series, a new series of string tutors designed to precede our existing Abracadabra books. All the titles in the series work in conjuction with each other, making them ideal for ensemble, group and whole class tuition. Used alone they remain perfect for individual lessons. The book contains activities, games and pieces that teach the fundamentals of playing the violin : good posture (with and without the instrument), bow hold, finger position and pitch awareness as well as developing rhythm and notation reading. The CD also aids pitch development with performances of the pieces and backing tracks to motivate pupils to practise outside of their lessons. The basics are constantly reinforced and revisited with the pupils building up to 'performance pieces' that combine and showcase all of the skills they have developed.

The eagerly awaited follow-up to the best-selling Why Beethoven Threw the Stew. What did Haydn's wife use for curling-paper for her hair? What did Schubert do with his old spectacles case? Why was Dvorak given a butcher's apron when he was a little boy? Why did Tchaikovsky spit on a map of Europe? Why did Faure find a plate of spinach on his face? And why did Handel waggle his wig? In Why Beethoven Threw the Stew, renowned cellist Steven Isserlis set out to pass on to children a wonderful gift given to him by his own cello teacher - the chance to people his own world with the great composers by getting to know them as friends. In his new book he draws us irresistibly into the world of six more favourite composers, bringing them alive in a manner that cannot fail to catch the imagination of children encountering classical music for the first time. Once again the text is packed with facts, dates and anecdotes, interspersed with lively black-and-white line illustrations, making this an attractive and accessible read for children to enjoy on their own or share with an adult. 'If Why Beethoven Threw the Stew does not turn your child into a music lover, the chances are nothing will.' Daily Mail

World Music Pedagogy, Volume I: Early Childhood Education is a resource for music educators to explore the intersection of early childhood music pedagogy and music in cultural contexts across the world. Focusing on the musical lives of children in preschool, kindergarten, and grade 1 (ages birth to 7 years), this volume provides an overview of age-appropriate world music teaching and learning encounters that include informal versus formal teaching approaches and a selection of musical learning aids and materials. It implements multimodal approaches encompassing singing, listening, movement, storytelling, and instrumental performance. As young children are enculturated into their first family and neighborhood environments, they can also grow into ever-widening concentric circles of cultural communities through child-centered encounters in music and the related arts, which can serve as a vehicle for children to know themselves and others more deeply. Centered around playful engagement and principles of informal instruction, the chapters reveal techniques and strategies for developing a child's musical and cultural knowledge and skills, with attention to music's place in the development of young children. This volume explores children's perspectives and capacities through meaningful (and fun!) engagement with music.
