Cerebrovascular Surgery - Volume III (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1985): Jack M. Fein, Eugene s Flamm Cerebrovascular Surgery - Volume III (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1985)
Jack M. Fein, Eugene s Flamm
R1,756 Discovery Miles 17 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Considerable impetus was given to the study and understanding of cere- brovascular anatomy by Thomas Willis and his contemporaries in the sev",nteenth century, yet almost two hundred years were to pass before further significant advances were made in this field. Then, from the mid- nineteenth century onwards, the dark ages of cerebrovascular research gradually lifted through the efforts of such workers as Luschka, Heubner, and Windle, whose pioneering anatomical studies formed the basis of the present-day understanding of the morphology of the cerebral circulation. The turn of the century saw an increasing influence of the early neurolo- gists in describing anatomy of cerebral vessels in relation to their areas of distribution and to the production of focal deficits through specific vascu- lar lesions and anomalies. Later still, Padget and others made important observations concerning phylogenetic and developmental aspects of the cerebral circulation. These anatomical and clinical studies were remarkable enough but the real breakthrough in investigating cerebral pathophysiology and in devis- ing appropriate corrective neurosurgical procedures had to await the re- markable advances in technology of the past fifty years. These began with the advent of cerebral angiography with all its subsequent refinements and progress has been accelerated through establishing noninvasive Doppler and high resolution ultrasound imaging techniques, methods for the accu- rate measurement of cerebral blood flow, CT scanning, PET scanning, and, most recently, imaging and metabolic NMR scanning.

Image-Guided Spine Interventions (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2011): John Mathis, Stanley Golovac Image-Guided Spine Interventions (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2011)
John Mathis, Stanley Golovac
R3,377 Discovery Miles 33 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As image-guided spine interventions have increasingly become a primary strategy for managing back pain, the tools and capabilities available to practitioners have grown significantly. This fully revised edition of Image-Guided Spine Interventions presents the latest procedures available to physicians who perform minimally invasive spine interventions. The comprehensive text covers the fundamentals -- such as spine anatomy, procedural materials, and pharmacological requirements -- along with chapters devoted to key topics such as discography, percutaneous descectomy, vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty, epidural steroid injections, and autonomic nerve blocks. Additionally, three new chapters are included in the Second Edition, covering pulsed radiofrequency procedures, sacroplasty, and spinal cord stimulation. Each technique is presented in a straightforward manner that allows the reader to effectively evaluate and implement new procedures. The text is further enhanced by nearly 200 images and illustrations. Edited by Dr. John Mathis, a former president of the American Society of Spine Radiology, and Dr. Stanley Golovac, who both have clinical practices devoted solely to spine procedures and pain management, the book will be useful to all physicians dealing with back pain, including radiologists, pain anesthesiologists, spine neurosurgeons, and orthopedists. Physicians will once again find that Image-Guided Spine Interventions, 2nd Edition, is the pivotal authority on image-guided techniques for the spine.

Spinal Cord Injuries - Causes, Risk Factors & Management (Hardcover): Alex Ann Martin, Jayln E. Jones Spinal Cord Injuries - Causes, Risk Factors & Management (Hardcover)
Alex Ann Martin, Jayln E. Jones
R5,518 R5,203 Discovery Miles 52 030 Save R315 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results from damage to the spinal cord due to trauma or disease and leads to partial or complete paralysis. Following SCI, physiological and lifestyle changes can lead to poor health outcomes. However, advances in injury stabilisation, medical treatment and rehabilitation have led to an increase in life expectancy. In this book, the authors present current research on the causes, risk factors and management of spinal cord injury. Topics include pain management following spinal cord injury; exercise training and its relation to slow bone loss in SCI; palliative and therapeutic strategies for SCI; NO-cGMP signalling in bulbospinal respiratory pathway after cervical spinal cord injury; and posterior pedicle screw fixation for thoracolumbar burst fractures.

Memoirs of a Neurosurgeon (Paperback): James D. Geissinger Memoirs of a Neurosurgeon (Paperback)
James D. Geissinger
R500 Discovery Miles 5 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In reflecting upon my life as a neurosurgeon, perhaps the most salient feature is that period of history involved. Trained by men who studied under Harvey Cushing, considered the father of neurological surgery, we, as early third-generation neurosurgeons, were held to those rigid standards of academic achievement and physical endurance typical of that time. The reader first identifies with the young child who dreams of becoming a doctor, and then sets out on that long path. He then re-lives the experiences of the student of medicine, and later the rigorous demands placed upon the surgeon-in-training. During the later descriptions of the private practice of brain and spinal surgery, the book transitions into an educational experience. It presents to the reader a multitude of neurological disorders requiring surgical treatment, the relevant surgical anatomy and the operative techniques involved. Often interjected are the intangibles of surgical judgment and philosophy when confronting those in pain or critically ill. Of equal importance were the major scientific advancements which occurred during that period of medical history. No longer did we have to bore a hole in the skull, or inject noxious materials into the head or spinal canal to verify a diagnosis. Rather, we had been privileged to enjoy the development of such remarkable machines as the ultrasound, CAT, and MRI. Descriptions of these devices, among others, and their impact on medical practice should prove interesting to the inquisitive reader. After 21 years in practice, and probably at the height of my career as a surgeon, I contracted hepatitis B subsequent to an accidental needle puncture in the operating room. Forced to lay down the scalpel, I turned to my second childhood dream, cattle ranching, as an alternative vocation. This then becomes a secondary focus of the book. A medical colleague, after learning of my book, expressed an interest in learning the common denominator driving a man to both neurosurgery and ranching. One can summarize with the word, "counterpoise." I had always strived to achieve a balance between the in-hospital, academic, precision-oriented work of the neurosurgeon and the outdoor, physically-demanding life of a rancher consummating the total American dream. Analogous to surgery I have always enjoyed using my hands in the shop. Throughout the book sections have been devoted to various aspects of woodworking, and an effort not only to share my enthusiasm but also to expose underlying problems and pitfalls; challenges I have encountered in striving to become an artisan of fine furniture. The practice of medicine has undergone significant change during my lifetime. Not only have I witnessed a burgeoning, unsustainable increase in the cost of healthcare, but also major changes in the way in which medicine is being practiced in the new millennium. Having been a proud product of the "Lucky Few" generation, born between the years 1929 and 1945, I am rightfully able to compare today's practice of medicine with those of the latter half of the 20th century.

Bill M. West, Harold Holder
R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Business tycoon, Marine, husband, father, pilot; Harold Holder nearly had his life extinguished by a silent monster building within his skull. Originally misdiagnosed as bacterial pneumonia, Holder's actual injury and ensuing surgery carry a mortality rate of more than 50%. His neurosurgeon would later tell him it was the worst he had ever seen. Compiled from a detailed journal that physical therapists encouraged Holder to write throughout his recovery, Please Leave the Lights On is a story of dramatic recovery fueled by personal drive and desire. Waking up immobile on a hospital bed deep within the Intensive Care Unit, Holder struggled to determine how much of his mental function remained post-surgery. Unable to test his physical abilities, he exercised his mental capacity by running cherished memories through his mind, attempting to remember specific names, places and dates. On the brink of death, Holder fought to regain his health during turbulent economic times when crooked bankers and lawyers threatened to take advantage of his injury and dismantle his empire. One incremental step at a time, Holder began to make progress in restoring his health, his business and his life-proving that recovery is possible even under the most trying circumstances.

Oxford Textbook of Neurological Surgery (Hardcover): Ramez Kirollos, Adel Helmy, Simon Thomson, Peter Hutchinson Oxford Textbook of Neurological Surgery (Hardcover)
Ramez Kirollos, Adel Helmy, Simon Thomson, Peter Hutchinson
R9,954 Discovery Miles 99 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neurosurgery is a rapidly developing and technically demanding branch of surgery that requires a detailed knowledge of the basic neuro-sciences and a thorough clinical approach. The Oxford Textbook of Neurological Surgery is an up-to-date, objective and readable text that covers the full scope of neurosurgical practice. It is part of the Oxford Textbooks in Surgery series, edited by Professor Sir Peter Morris. The book is split into 20 overarching sections (Principles of Neurosurgery, Neuro-oncology of Intrinsic Tumours; Extra-axial Tumours and Skull Lesions; Cerebro-Pontine Angle Tumours; Sellar and Supra-Sellar Tumours; Posterior Fossa Tumours; Pineal tumours; Uncommon Tumours and Tumour Syndromes; Neurotrauma and Intensive Care; Vascular Neurosurgery; Principles of Spinal Surgery; Spinal Pathology; Spinal Trauma; Peripheral Nerve Surgery; Functional Neurosurgery; Epilepsy; Paediatric Neurosurgery; Neurosurgery for Cerebrospinal Fluid Disorders and Neurosurgical Infection). Each section takes a dual approach with, 'Generic Surgical Management' chapters that focus on specific clinical problems facing the neurosurgeon (e.g. sellar/supra-sellar tumour, Intradural Spina Tumours etc.) and 'Pathology-Specific' chapters (e.g. Glioma, Meningeal Tumours, Scoliosis and Spinal Deformity, Aneurysm etc.). Where appropriate, this division provides the reader with easily accessible information for both clinical problems which present in a regional fashion and specific pathologies. The generic chapters cover aspects such as operative approaches, neuroanatomy and nuances. Specifically each chapter in the book incorporates several strands. Firstly the fundamental neuroscience (anatomy, pathology, genetics etc.) that underlies the clinical practice. Secondly, a review of the requisite clinical investigations (e.g. angiography, electrodiagnostics, radiology). Thirdly, a thorough evidence based review of clinical practice. Following this a consideration of the key debates and controversies in the field with 'pro-' and 'con-' sections (e.g. minimally invasive spine surgery, microsurgical treatment of aneurysms) is provided. A summary of the key papers and clinical scales relevant to neurosurgery form the concluding part. The book is a 'one-stop' text for trainees and consultants in neurosurgery, residents, those preparing for sub-specialty exams and other professionals allied to surgery who need to gain an understanding of the field. It acts as both a point of reference to provide a focussed refresher for the experienced neurosurgeon as well as a trusted training resource.
