The Origins of Worker Mobilisation - Australia 1788-1850 (Hardcover): Michael Quinlan The Origins of Worker Mobilisation - Australia 1788-1850 (Hardcover)
Michael Quinlan
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a book on how and why workers come together. Almost coincident with its inception, worker organisation is a central and enduring element of capitalism. In the 19th and 20th centuries' mobilisation by workers played a substantial role in reshaping critical elements of these societies in Europe, North America, Australasia and elsewhere including the introduction of minimum labour standards (living wage rates, maximum hours etc), workplace safety and compensation laws and the rise of welfare state more generally. Notwithstanding setbacks in recent decades, worker organisation represents a pivotal countervailing force to moderate the excesses of capitalism and is likely to become even more influential as the social consequences of rising global inequality become more manifest. Indeed, instability and periodic shifts in the respective influence of capital and labour are endemic to capitalism. As formal institutions have declined in some countries or unions outlawed and severely repressed in others, there has been growing recognition of informal strike activity by workers and wider alliances between unions and community organisations in others. While such developments are seen as new they aren't. Indeed, understanding of worker organisation is often ahistorical and even those understandings informed by historical research are, this book will argue, in need of revision. This book provides a new perspective on and new insights into how and why workers organise, and what shapes this organisation. The Origins of Worker Mobilisation will be key reading for scholars, academics and policy makers the fields of industrial relations, HRM, labour economics, labour history and related disciplines.

Executive Talent - Developing and Keeping the Best People (Paperback, 2nd edition): Peter Blau Executive Talent - Developing and Keeping the Best People (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Peter Blau
R1,486 Discovery Miles 14 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This brilliant, up-to-date compendium argues that the most successful factor in company life is good people: individuals who are capable, competent, and savvy. Can corporate life attract such people? Ginzberg argues that despite demographic dislocations and the challenges to the work ethic, the answer to this question is a loud yes. In Executive Talent, Ginzberg and his colleagues show how to attract, train, and promote a superior work force, and how to take advantage of the different values in today's employees.

Over 25 percent of the population currently graduates from a senior college, and the number going for advanced degrees is climbing. Blacks and Hispanics together will soon account for one in every four new native-born job applicants. Women are now nearly as prevalent in the work force as men. Today's employees place more emphasis on family and leisure, and less on company loyalty. In the face of these critical changes, companies can no longer continue with the same human resource policies. Ginzberg offers new approaches to attract and retain superior talent.

In Executive Talent, Ginzberg brings together top academics and high level executives to explore the new world of work. They discuss coming trends and changes that will reshape the talent pool, how these shifts will impact the individual company, and ways to develop and implement a human resource strategy to meet the challenging work force of the future.

Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices (Hardcover): Richard S. Barrett Challenging the Myths of Fair Employment Practices (Hardcover)
Richard S. Barrett
R2,768 Discovery Miles 27 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a practical guide to the development and use of selection procedures for those who are concerned with human resource management, but who are not necessarily specialists in personnel testing. Dr. Barrett explains how to improve the quality of the work force with the most modern techniques while avoiding unfair discrimination against minorities, women, older workers, and the disabled. He challenges myths that have grown up in the past 30 years which interfere with the use of valid and fair selection procedures. Topics include: historical and legal background, cognitive and non-cognitive selection procedures, validity, and measuring and reducing adverse impact. Although he concentrates on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, there is special treatment of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Age of Discrimination in Employment Act.

Clearly written and informal, this book is every bit as professionally sound as his earlier book, "Fair Employment Strategies in Human Resource Management." It removes part of the mystique about tests with many illustrations of good and bad practice. Besides being useful to human resource executives, it is a valuable supplementary text for graduate and undergraduate courses in personnel management. Attorneys would also find it especially valuable because the author documents its point with citations to important cases and the the "Uniform Guidelines."

Mustafa F. OEzbilgin, Fiona Bartels-Ellis, Paul Gibbs
R2,138 Discovery Miles 21 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how global organisations and institutions manage Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) across their operations and within different cultural and value settings. It blends empirical evidence from collaborative research with original practical insights. In addition, the book demonstrates how the idea of narratives can be used as an approach to achieving EDI goals, presenting powerful stories on EDI implementation and challenges stemming from EDI-related abuses. Taken together, the book's respective chapters depict the complexity of EDI in a nuanced way, reflecting the disparate realities of those involved in its implementation. The combination of academic research and insights from practitioners in the field give the book a unique position in the global management literature on EDI, while also yielding a wealth of valuable lessons and conclusions.

Exploring Resources, Life-Balance and Well-Being of Women Who Work in a Global Context (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Roxane L.... Exploring Resources, Life-Balance and Well-Being of Women Who Work in a Global Context (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Roxane L. Gervais, Prudence M. Millear
R3,609 Discovery Miles 36 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents research on women's experiences, attitudes and perceptions, considering their work roles and in the context of their lives outside work. It explores the various choices women may opt to take, and the resources they may use, and presents options they may wish to consider over the course of their working lives. The research presented here is varied and the methods used include cross-sectional and longitudinal research, reviews of literature, as well as experiences and practical suggestions from clinical, organisational, health and occupational health psychologists, in addition to occupational safety and health practitioners. It looks at women who are part-time employees, those in vulnerable positions in the informal economy to women in mainstream, full-time employment. The chapters present theoretical underpinnings of how, what, when and where women approach work options, approach life and approach living. The overarching factor that links these chapters is the focus on women as a vital resource in the world economy, with an exploration of the options that are available to them and how these could be maximised to retain a productive and healthy female workforce.

Speaking Management - How to Spot Language Traps and Resolve Contested Management Terms (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Stephen... Speaking Management - How to Spot Language Traps and Resolve Contested Management Terms (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Stephen Keith McGrath
R4,596 Discovery Miles 45 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book identifies ten linguistic traps in our everyday language usage and provides philosophical justification for a method of determining internally consistent definitions of groups of related terms that avoid all ten traps. Various examples and applications of this method are given throughout. The book demonstrates how the seemingly straightforward matter of our understandings of the meaning of words can have major implications for the exercise of power. This book illustrates how this insight originated from management research into project governance that found lack of agreement on the definition of that term, as well as on many other important management terms. To resolve this, the impacts of evolution, philosophy and linguistics upon our everyday language usage were investigated. The research documented in this book found that the human tool called language works well for describing physical objects but has difficulty producing a common understanding of the meaning of concepts - a problem not restricted to the management field. That field is simply a microcosm that exposes a much more widespread linguistic usage problem affecting our personal, religious and political lives; one that existed at the time of Plato and Aristotle and has laid hidden for millennia. This book includes a lexicon of 70 commonly used but confused or contested management terms, as well as a further 18 such project management terms, all developed by applying its definitional method. The terms include governance, power, ethics, leadership and their associated groups of terms. The book explores how disagreement can be resolved using these new clear definitions and extends this into an analysis of who 'good' ethics are good for. It also incorporates a section on "how to speak management and actually know what you are talking about", written in the style of an 'idiots guide' or 'guide for dummies'. This identifies common, everyday circumstances in which lack of agreed definitions cause avoidable confusion and provides the book's focus on conflict dissolution rather than on conflict resolution.

Causes of Failure in Performance Appraisal and Supervision - A Guide to Analysis and Evaluation for Human Resources... Causes of Failure in Performance Appraisal and Supervision - A Guide to Analysis and Evaluation for Human Resources Professionals (Hardcover)
Joe Baker
R2,214 Discovery Miles 22 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Baker has written a practical, procedure-oriented book with the purpose of helping individuals identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal systems in order to improve their design and operation. To do this, he describes procedures useful for identifying discrepancies in a performance appraisal system, determining if the system is being effectively implemented, and assessing whether the desired objectives are being achieved. . . . In general I would agree that Baker has met his goals, and his book will be useful to practitioners if they are interested in understandig what they should be doing to conduct effective performance appraisals. . . . an organized, generally well-written book on the performance appraisal process.

"Personnel Psychology"

Here is a practical, procedure-oriented guide for managers, supervisors, human resource professionals, and training and development specialists--to help identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal and supervision. Baker begins with a discussion of the need for procedures to identify the causes of failure of performance appraisal and supervision, and describes a sound practical concept of evaluation that can be used to meet this need. Systems analysis is used to describe a comprehensive performance appraisal system that contains all of the parts necessary to function effectively. The consequences of failure are also enumerated for each step of the process. Procedures are included to identify discrepancies in the system design of an organization, to determine if the parts of the system are being carried out in practice, and to determine if the desired objectives are being achieved. These procedures also include ways to determine if appropriate methods are being used to measure performance and ways to control human error. Finally, the requirements for a continuing evaluation effort are discussed.

International Perspectives on Competence in the Workplace - Implications for Research, Policy and Practice (Hardcover, 2nd ed.... International Perspectives on Competence in the Workplace - Implications for Research, Policy and Practice (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2009)
Christine R. Velde
R3,022 Discovery Miles 30 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the world s economy develops into a more dynamic, fast-moving, and unpredictable entity, it is crucial that the workers who create wealth have the ability to assess and respond to new and unforeseen challenges. In other words, the future will require a more competent workforce. What, though, does this mean in practice? In this, the fully revised second edition of Christine Velde s book, a variety of researchers from around the world provide a truly international perspective on the issue. They help to redefine the term competence. Rather than responding to challenges using a pre-existing set of skills, they see competence as having the ability to assess new situations, and then adapt one s response accordingly, particularly in collaboration with others.

Providing the reader with insightful perspectives about competence in different situations and contexts, the book s sections explore the concept of competence in industry and vocational education, in schools and colleges, in small businesses and companies, and in universities. The interpretation, experience and teaching of competence in the workplace is boiled down to five essential components that in themselves represent an argument for a more holistic conception of competence. Velde herself concludes the book by synthesizing and reflecting on the contents.

This book provides the reader with insightful perspectives on competence, and the characteristics of learning environments in different workplace contexts. Drawing on phenomenographic insights allows it to present a more enlightened view of competence, at the same time as opening up an international dialogue about the meaning and interpretation of competence in the workplace. Useful not only to educators and researchers, this volume will also assist leaders and managers in a variety of contexts to develop more meaningful workplaces."

Mobile Virtual Work - A New Paradigm? (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): J.H. Erik Andriessen, Matti Vartiainen Mobile Virtual Work - A New Paradigm? (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
J.H. Erik Andriessen, Matti Vartiainen
R4,583 Discovery Miles 45 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dear Reader This is a book about mobile virtual work. It aims at clarifying the basic concepts and showing present practices and future challenges. The roots of the book are in the collaboration of few European practitioners and - searchers, who met each other under the umbrella of the Swedish SALTSA programme (see next page) in January 2002 in Stockholm. The group was first called 'ICT, Mobility and Work Organisation' but redefined itself quickly as 'Mobile Virtual Cooperative Work' group. The change of the name reflects the development of reasoning in the group. We could not find much material on mobile work, certainly not systematic studies, - though a growing interest in mobile technologies and services could be found. Practices of telework and virtual organizations were better known, but we were convinced that the combination with mobile work was so- thing different and new. Our main target became to understand what it was all about. The next step was an expert meeting in October 2004 at Ranas Castle again in Sweden. A wider group of experts was invited to present their views on mobile virtual work and ideas about book chapters from different perspectives of working life. Some of the expertise could be found through the network of the AMI@Work family created by the New Working En- ronments unit of the European Commission's Information Society Dir- torate-General. Also close collaboration was developed with the related MOSAIC program."
