Sexualities, Work and Organizations (Paperback): James Ward Sexualities, Work and Organizations (Paperback)
James Ward
R1,489 Discovery Miles 14 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sexuality is arguably the most under-researched of all diversity areas in work organizations. This book brings together and relates stories of minority sexual identity from six organizations drawn from three different industry sectors: the Emergency Services, the Civil Service and the Banking sector. Here sexual minorities freely recount stories of their own workplace experiences. Three main themes emerge from the data: silence, disclosure and response. Issues of voice and silence are particularly pertinent for those who are not part of the dominant heterosexual discourse; issues of disclosure are highly important for sexual minorities for whom coming out is a major defining moment; and, highly unusually, in this book readers get an insight into how people respond to sexual minorities, as other employees' reactions to stories are related too. This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding discursive construction of identity in the workplace, as experienced by sexual minorities and provides a snapshot of minority working lives at the beginning of the 21st century. This is an extremely well written, highly innovative, timely and engaging book which as well as human resources management, it will also be of interest to scholars in other areas such as sociology and general business and management.

This thoroughly revised second edition presents up-to-date analysis from various academic streams and disciplines that illuminate our understanding of employee voice from a range of different perspectives. This wide-ranging Handbook demonstrates that research on employee voice has gone beyond union and non-union voices to build a wider and deeper knowledge base. Exploring the previously under-represented paradigm of the organizational behaviour approach, new chapters take account of a broader conceptualization of employee voice. Written by expert contributors, this Handbook explores the meaning and impact of employee voice for various stakeholders and considers the ways in which these actors engage with voice processes such as collective bargaining, individual processes, mutual gains, task-based voice and grievance procedures. This comprehensive Handbook will enable the reader to engage with the debates surrounding employee voice and help to extend our overall understanding of what goes on in workplaces at the heart of modern economies. This second edition of the Handbook of Research on Employee Voice will be a vital resource for academics and students researching human resource management, organizational behaviour and employment relations, while its forward-thinking approach will also appeal to policy makers, employers and union officials. Human Resource Development as We Know It - Speeches that Have Shaped the Field (Hardcover): Monica Lee Human Resource Development as We Know It - Speeches that Have Shaped the Field (Hardcover)
Monica Lee
R5,402 Discovery Miles 54 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The field of Human Resource Development has developed largely through academics, scholars and reflective practitioners from across the world coming together. Many people link memorable keynote speeches to changes in their research, practice, career path or even life view. Good keynote speeches are a forthright statement of the expert 's view and thus are often not published. Now that HRD is maturing there is a need to recapture some of those earlier moments both as a form of archive, and also to shed light on the path that has been followed.

Twenty-two speeches seminal to the field of HRD are included in this volume. These speeches are milestones along the path of the development of the field; as well as reconstructing their speech, the contributors have also located it within the time it was given and commented on how the field has developed since. This book is a resource, not only as an archive and for those who wish to relive their pivotal moments, but also for anyone interested in the development of HRD as a discipline. This unique approach provides an exciting and engaging way to reflect on cutting edge issues in the academic and practitioner world of HRD

Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui, Janice Monti-Belkaoui
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Not only are employees an organization's most important asset, but their value and contributions to the organization's financial success can be accounted for and disclosed to users of accounting information. The authors argue persuasively for better accounting strategy in the human resource context, then identify three ways to implement it: 1) through human resource accounting, disclosable in annual reports; 2) through employee reporting; and 3) the application of value-added reporting which reveals the contribution that labor makes to the firm's wealth. The result is a unique, timely guide, presented in a way that management professionals, as well as academicians and researchers, can understand and apply.

Work-Life Matters - Crafting a New Balance at Work and at Home (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): David Pendleton, Peter Derbyshire,... Work-Life Matters - Crafting a New Balance at Work and at Home (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
David Pendleton, Peter Derbyshire, Chloe Hodgkinson
R910 R782 Discovery Miles 7 820 Save R128 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Work-life balance isn't about where or how you spend your time. At least not solely. It's about where and how you use and replenish your energy. Work matters. Life matters. Work-life matters. As we start to navigate life during and after the pandemic, employers and employees are increasingly re-evaluating how work can be made more sustainable and more fulfilling. Many employees - particularly Gen X and Gen Z - are seeking a new psychological contract with their employers. Putting these trends into context and offering practical solutions, this book takes a deep dive into why work matters as part of a healthy and fulfilling life. The authors present a new and different way of thinking about the matter of balance, arguing that there is no hard divide between 'work' and life' because 'work' takes place entirely within 'life' and you can't balance two things when one is a subset of the other. To achieve the balance required for a healthy existence, we need to recognise that there are activities in all parts of work-life that drain our energy and others that give us a buzz. Rather than trying to solve the drain of hard work by living it large at the weekend - or compensating for an unfulfilling home life by working like a demon, we need to create balance at work and balance at home. Now is a golden opportunity to re-examine the world of work and job-craft to make them more satisfying, less draining and more energising. The ideas in this book provide a practical guide to help that process.

Determinants of Executive Compensation - Corporate Ownership, Performance, Size, and Diversification (Hardcover, New): Ahmed... Determinants of Executive Compensation - Corporate Ownership, Performance, Size, and Diversification (Hardcover, New)
Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui, Ellen Pavlik
R2,213 Discovery Miles 22 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study offers a thorough analysis of what determines the level of executive compensation in one corporation as opposed to another. Challenging prior research which has tended to focus solely on the influence of coporate financial performance, the authors argue that structural characteristics of the firm--size, internal organization, and ownership--are equally decisive in influencing the level and structure of executive compensation which allows for the investigation of both the direct and indirect effects of each of these factors on executive compensation and offer a guide to the assessment of executive compensation in the large corporation that will be of significant value to financial analysts, investors, and researchers interested in the role and ramifications of executive compensation policies.

Following a review of theoretical considerations and recent findings on the determination of executive compensation, the authors present a model of executive compensation which integrates the concepts of corporate performance, organizational structure, size, and ownership structure. This path model is then tested by utilizing data from a sample of over 200 Fortune 500 firms. Both regression results and path analysis results show significant direct and indirect effects of the structural variables tested. Based upon their results, the authors offer policy suggestions for those involved in determining executive compensation or evaluating the financial status of organizations under investment consideration.

Template-based Management - A Guide for an Efficient and Impactful Professional Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Uwe G.... Template-based Management - A Guide for an Efficient and Impactful Professional Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Uwe G. Seebacher
R1,553 Discovery Miles 15 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Template-based management (TBM) approach has been used since 2003 across the world in diverse contexts. It has evolved hand-in-hand with the evolution of business: Agile, Blueprints, Canvas, Design Thinking, or Kanban are only few of the many current concepts based on the approach. This book expands and upgrades the author's 2003 book 'Template-driven Consulting' (Springer) by tracing this evolution and offering the current state-of-the-art to practitioners. TBM combines structure and method: pre-structuring diverse processes, it helps to present complex activities and procedures in a simple, clear, and transparent manner and then implement them. The use of TBM ranges from conception or creative work in agencies to designing organizations and strategies, planning and monitoring initiatives and projects, to innovation management and optimizing cost structures, processes, or entire departments and divisions. The book also demonstrates how successful organizations use TBM to methodically and structurally apply the internal know-how in a cost and time-optimal way for attaining sustainable business success. Readers will learn to apply and use TBM, identify its importance, and benefit from a variety of case studies that illustrate the application and use for the entire business and management practice.

Teaching Human Resource Management - An Experiential Approach (Paperback): Suzanne C. De Janasz, Joanna Crossman Teaching Human Resource Management - An Experiential Approach (Paperback)
Suzanne C. De Janasz, Joanna Crossman
R1,259 Discovery Miles 12 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'de Janasz and Crossman have drawn on their professional colleagues to provide an impressive collection of ''tried and true'' experiential exercises to help students gain hands-on understanding of human resource management. These useful exercises engage students in the kind of active learning that is essential to apply HRM theories to concrete, practical situations. In reflecting on their experiential learning, students acquire a deeper, more personal knowledge of what HRM is all about. Teaching Human Resource Management: An Experiential Approach is an essential and valuable companion to more standard texts in HRM.' - Thomas G. Cummings, University of Southern California, US 'This pioneering book by de Janasz and Grossman is a terrific resource. It not only covers a wide range and comprehensive set of topics with which all HRM students (and practitioners) need to be familiar. It also offers well-designed experiential exercises that promote students' active engagement with the topic at hand. I would love to take the course that uses this book!' - Gary N. Powell, University of Connecticut and Lancaster University, US 'An experiential approach to the teaching of HRM makes each topic come alive. By actively participating and becoming highly engaged in each exercise, students generate important lessons that tie theory to practice. The exercises in this book enable all of that and they fill an important gap. ''Tried and true'' exercises in 15 key areas of HR, developed by a diverse group of HR scholars, provide choice, flexibility, and comprehensiveness to any HR course or executive education program.' - Wayne Cascio, University of Colorado, Denver, US This book breathes life into the teaching of Human Resource Management (HRM) by creating learning that applies the theoretical aspects of the discipline to meaningful contexts. In this way, readers will be able to better relate theoretical concepts to workplace decisions and dilemmas. The management of human resources (HR) is a critical function contributing to an organization?s competitiveness in ways that are at least as important as the management of financial and capital resources. To that end, it is essential that future managers and HR specialists destined for careers in business, government and not for profit organizations develop key skills and competences in HR. Experiential learning ignites the desire to learn, while revealing the importance and impact of knowledge and skills necessary to analyze and resolve HR-related dilemmas and challenges in contemporary organizations. While many publications provide direction and advice on the teaching of organizational behavior and leadership, it is harder to find accessible books to support the teaching of HR in motivating and grounded ways. The authors include over 65 exercises, activities, and cases for the undergraduate, MBA and executive learning classrooms. HR professors and practitioners will find it of value and students will be left feeling well prepared for the kinds of situations that await them in the field of? - and situations requiring expertise in? - HR.

Human Resource Management in the Sport and Leisure Industry (Hardcover): Chris Wolsey, Sue Minten, Jeffrey Abrams Human Resource Management in the Sport and Leisure Industry (Hardcover)
Chris Wolsey, Sue Minten, Jeffrey Abrams
R4,931 Discovery Miles 49 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The sport and leisure sectors possess unique characteristics that pose particular challenges for managers and human resource professionals. The age profile of workers, seasonality, the pressure to achieve short-term results, media intrusion, wide differences in pay between elite and community levels, and the importance of competition and consumer (fan) behaviour, all combine to set sport and leisure apart from 'mainstream' business and management. Human Resource Management in the Sport and Leisure Industry is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to HRM in sport and leisure that examines these challenges in the context of organisational structure, systems, and individual and group behaviour, encouraging the reader to develop a strategic approach to HRM, and emphasising the importance of reflective professional practice. The book explores the full range of key issues, themes and concepts in contemporary HRM, including: the labour market in sport and leisure personal skills in HRM recruitment and selection learning, training and development evaluation and performance appraisal change management coaching and mentorship. Covering private, public and voluntary contexts, the book includes a wide range of examples and cases from the real world of sport and leisure management. Each chapter also includes highlighted definitions of key concepts, review questions, summaries and learning objectives, to guide student learning and help managers develop their professional skills. Effective human resource management and development is essential for business success, and this book is therefore important reading for any student or professional working in sport and leisure management.

Managing the Knowledge-Intensive Firm (Hardcover): Nicolaj Ejler, Flemming Poulfelt, Fiona Czerniawska Managing the Knowledge-Intensive Firm (Hardcover)
Nicolaj Ejler, Flemming Poulfelt, Fiona Czerniawska
R4,477 Discovery Miles 44 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the last decade, there has been a substantial rise in the number of knowledge-intensive firms - constituted primarily of professionals. The core assets of these businesses are the people themselves. Handle them badly, and they may defect or stall. Successful managers of knowledge-intensive firms must create meaning among and inspire their employees, to ensure high performance. To achieve this, leaders must understand how to target each employee 's ambitions and challenges to facilitate their personal and professional development.

This book examines what sets knowledge-intensive firms apart from other types of organizations, and the resultant organizational and strategic differences in business models, talent management, and client-handling approaches. The authors bring their own complementary perspectives on the subject: one, as the manager of a private consulting firm with a strong research background; another, as a business school professor whose practice-based skills are fundamental to his work; and a third, a world leading commentator on professional service firms acting as a consultant, business school researcher and a manager.

Ejler, Poulfelt and Czerniawska present a new model for transforming the management of knowledge-intensive firms, which is supported throughout with practical examples and cases.

International Human Resource Management - Policy and Practice (Hardcover): Mila Lazarova, Michael Morley, Shaun Tyson International Human Resource Management - Policy and Practice (Hardcover)
Mila Lazarova, Michael Morley, Shaun Tyson
R2,817 Discovery Miles 28 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The extent to which organisational performance is related to the Human Resource policies and practices adopted has been a question debated by both academics and practitioners for the past two decades. This book takes the debate into the international field by drawing upon the well respected Cranet data set, which provides longitudinal and comparative data drawn from 40 countries across the world. International Human Resource Management highlights the dominant institutional factors embedded in the societal contexts of different cultures which impact on corporate HR policies and practices, and illustrates how these variables influence Human Resource Management and performance. It examines how the HR function can impact upon HR policies and influence organisational performance. It also discusses the role of the HR department; specifically, how the distribution of responsibilities between HR managers and line managers moderates the relationship between HR strategic integration and organizational performance. Finally, it investigates the impact of societal factors on the strategic integration of female HR directors. These contributions show the complexity of the relationship between HRM and organisational performance, and modify the current prevailing models of this relationship, where scant attention has been paid to institutional forces and the cultural, economic and social contexts in which organisations are located.

This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Malcolm Warner
R4,033 Discovery Miles 40 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume sets out in search of what we call Confucian HRM in Greater China and beyond. It covers theory and practice not only in the People 's Republic of China but also in the Overseas Chinese (Nanyang) Diaspora, namely in Hong Kong and Taiwan, among others. It will seek to understand how far traditional Chinese culture and values continue to influence the degree to which the human resource management (HRM) as adopted in those cultural contexts has been implemented.

Confucian HRM in Greater China includes a wide range of concepts such as Confucian HRM, employee participation, family firms, guanxi, learning and job satisfaction, local labour markets, performance-based pay, training policies, and women 's roles in employment. A wide range of international contributors provide the reader with diverse theories, methodologies and perspectives, arguing that the continuity of traditional Chinese values is indeed still empirically observable in the contemporary practice of people-management in Greater China. The contributors are all experts in their fields who teach and research on HRM in many faculties throughout the world.
